Phi Mu
Pi Phi

Greek Life
Panhellenic

My cousin is one of the 889 PNMs! She is a legacy, she is a freshman, she is awesome (if I give details, it will give her anonymity away) and without being too biased, she would be a great asset to any chapter on campus!!!! I would like to thank Candy, Kristen, Lillian and Tania for their support!

IFC rush also begins Thursday, with 762 PNMs participating! Round one is two days and PNMs visit 14 houses. Round two is Saturday, PNMs visit six houses and round three is Sunday, PNMs visit three houses. Bids are handed out Monday at 6:00p.

MSKKG 09-30-2003 04:47 PM

Well, it's about time!!! I have been on pins and needles waiting for Recruitment at Ole Miss to start. I know at least 5 PNMs, so I'm hoping we'll have plenty of updates!

breathesgelatin 09-30-2003 04:49 PM

Angels&Arrows, good luck to your cousin! I will be rooting for her! Of course we share a special preference ;) but I know that she will choose the group that is right for her!

Munchkin03 09-30-2003 04:57 PM

I had a co-worker this summer who is in a house at Ole Miss. Looking at her chapter's (and others), it seems like any choice there is a good choice! :) She was very down-to-Earth and a great representation of her house.

MSKKG 09-30-2003 05:26 PM

One of my PNMs has a b'day on the 3rd. A&A, I hope she and your cousin get to meet. They are both top-notch young ladies! Good luck to them both!!!

Munchkin03, you're right about any choice being a good one at Ole Miss. It's a unique environment for GLOs.

TriDeltaGal 09-30-2003 08:45 PM

Good Luck to all the PNMs at Ole Miss! I can only imagine how stressful rush is down there!

SparkliiQTMTSU 09-30-2003 10:49 PM

YAAY! Im so excited to see an Ole Miss thingie :) I have a few friends out there and my old boss was an AOPi there :) Good Luck to all the PNM's

Woohoo! Good luck!

mmcat 10-01-2003 07:08 AM

best of everything...everyone have a blast.

MSKKG 10-01-2003 07:37 AM

There is an article in the Daily Mississippian about rush numbers. I hope this is the link:

http://www.thedmonline.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2003/10/01/3f7a94d9efefa

Last year, a little over 700 women rushed. This year, it's right under 900! If everyone stays in rush, that would set quota at around 100!!!

honeychile 10-01-2003 10:56 AM

Okay, I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering about this:

Ole Miss has the reputation of being one of the most greek-oriented campuses, but only nine sororities. Quota will possibly be close to 90 women.

I know that ADPi used to be at Ole Miss, but for some reason, never caught on. Is there a reason why there isn't at least one more sorority trying to colonize at a school that's so pro-greek?

ilovetheviolets 10-01-2003 11:02 AM

crazy...

that's what i was thinking. i know at my school rercruitment numbers are hurting, less and less people each year choose to go through formal recruitment. yet, last year a national (not panhellenic) sorority chose to colonize and was initiated on my campus. this year they might be forced to join in on formal recruitment, which (if the numbers remain similar to last year) would make quota only 10 girls.
i feel that it could quite possibly be that there just aren't girls who are willing to start up a new sorority there, and that they would rather be apart of the "elite nine" (as they call them in the article) that are already there. just a thought.

 Dayum... total at my school was only 80, and people were concerned that they didn't know all their sisters! Initiation must take a looooong time.....

aopirose 10-01-2003 12:46 PM

Good luck to Cousin!!!

I didn't know if anyone else had trouble with the link so here is the article.

It does mention about possible expansion but it is not being pursued at this time. Perhaps after this recruitment they may look at it more closely.

"Rush numbers break participant records

by Melissa Sindelar
DM Campus News Editor
October 01, 2003

Rush breaks records again this year as just under 900 females and approximately 780 males ready themselves for Recruitment 2003.

About 715 female students went out for Rush last year. Only about 20 more males will go through the process this year.

"The girls' enrollment jumped 15 percent, and the guys jumped about 5 percent," Jason Dean, consultant for Greek Life, said. "This makes our system hands down the largest in the nation for public universities."

Dean said growth for Rush usually corresponds with the growth in enrollment. Although the male growth still does, the female increase is far beyond that of the rise in the university's enrollment.

Meredith Padalino, vice president for recruitment for the Panhellenic Council, attributes the increase to "how successful of a Greek system Ole Miss has had."

The Panhellenic council expected only a rise of 30-40 rushees, according to Elizabeth Norberg, judicial and education vice president.

"We had added another group in the Philanthropy round to keep each group smaller, and now the girls have a break period, too," Norberg said.

Dean said long-term plans may include bringing another national sorority to campus to create smaller pledge classes for each sorority because right now they are "busting at the seams." This idea, however, is not being actively pursued yet.

Besides working with a new computer system, the Interfraternity Council has no changes for this year's Rush, according to vice president for recruitment Blake Bee.

Bee attributes the 5 percent increase for male recruitment to the school's growth and the fact that the Alpha Tau Omega will participate in the process this year.

ATO returned to campus last winter after a one-year suspension caused by a racially offensive photograph taken at its Halloween party.

Bee said many contributing factors explain the great rise in female enrollment compared to male.

"I believe there are more girls in the freshman class," he said. "There's always more girls going through recruitment and also fewer spaces for girls. There are only nine sororities, and they have more of a desire to be in those exclusive nine."

These nine will welcome the female rushees Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. for the first day of the Philanthropy round. Rushees will go to three parties, have a break and then go to two more parties before stopping for the night at 9:20. The process repeats for the remaining houses Friday.

Females can only go back to six houses Saturday for the Skit round. If more than six invite someone back, she must cut her list down to the required amount.

A change in the process this year is the regret with interest, where if a rushee must cut one of the sororities because she was invited back to too many but is still interested, the sorority will find out and could invite her back to the final round. It is up to the rushee if she will to that house over another one.

"This gives everyone more options," Padalino said. "It just maximizes their choices. Jason Dean is hoping this will keep us at our 90 percent placement rate or even increase it."

The final night, Pref night, rushees only go to three sorority houses. After they finish making the rounds, they rank the houses in the order of their favorites.

The area between Fulton Chapel and the sorority houses should be cleared for the 6 p.m. rush Monday, Bid Day, when the rushees find out what sorority they will pledge.

The process for males is basically the same, with only a few changes. Despite having 14 fraternity houses, rushees still can only return to six houses in the second round and three in the third. Any house that invites back a rushee Sunday will give that student a bid. The final decision is up to the rushee.

Dean said about 85 percent of rushees receive placement with most of the remaining percentage affected by dropouts, opposed to people not receiving bids."

honeychile, zta also had a chapter at ole miss, but i remember it was struggling when i was in college(in the late 70's) and eventually closed. it had happened at least once before, and they had retained their house-i don't know if they still own it. one of our former national vp-alumna was from ole miss, and she is a lovely lady. maybe zeta of adpi will get to return! lisa

Good luck to your girl, A&A!!!

You know I'm rooting for her to find her place!!! :)

Please don't take my first post in this thread wrong - I'm sincerely not saying, "Hey - why isn't Alpha Delta Pi at Ole Miss?" As I said, my understanding is, for some reason, it just wasn't a hit.

What I am (still) curious about is the numbers game. If that many PNMs sign up for only 9 sororities, shouldn't there be at least one other sorority? What is the usual Quota? Do most chapters reach Quota/Total? How many PNMs drop out of recruitment?

I admit that this could be a cultural misinterpretation, since I don't know the numbers etc. Are there any Ole Miss greeks who could explain this to me, or at least help me to understand?

I am not sure what total is, but before rush started this year #'s at Ole Miss range from 95 members-180 members. I am a little reluctant to post this, because I am unable to verify.. but I was told that quota is 85 this year. Which would put at least four chapters over 250 members and three chapters right under 250. Last year quota was 71, 6/9 chapters made quota. Two that missed, missed by just a few and are still two of the largest chapters on campus (I think they got exactly the PNMs they wanted).

There is a large expense involved with brining a new chapter on campus, if the GLO's HQ is not willing to make the financial commitment and it is the chapter with a lot of Alumnae backing it is going to be hard for the chapter to make it (IMO)...

I am sure she is busy with rush, but OleMissGlitter or MSKKG could tell you more. I can tell you that Ole Miss is in discussions about bringing another sorority on campus.

Angels&Arrows 10-04-2003 02:21 AM

Well we have finished Round 1!

This was the philanthropy round. The PNMs were invited in to the houses with a sister, the president spoke, they watched a rush video and made something for the chapter's philathropy. It was basically the same at every house. She visited four houses the first night and five tonight. In no particular order:

Anchor: This chapter did a great job of on campus presentation before rush.. Wearing letters and introducing themselves. She already knew a lot membres, so it was a lot of fun!

Arrow: The members had sooo much fun with the philanthropy night and video, it filled the rushees up with excitement. This was one of the houses that she did not know many members, but the arrow girls made her feel right at home.

Dagger: I think since she knows several members, she felt comfortable. She said it was really really exciting.

Dolphin: They had the best rotations! She had a lot of fun and met a lot of girls.

Key: All of her friends LOVED this house.

Kite: She had a nice time. Really liked the member who picked her up!

Ladybug: They had a good presentation, but maybe not as comfortable there as she was at some of the other houses._

Owl: She had a great time and really liked the members she met.

Panda: The members were very nice. During their rush video she looked around and noticed many sisters were not smiling (I think this bothered her).

Tomorrow is Round 2, Skit Daythe PNMs get invites back at 7a, parties start at 1p!

OleMissMom 10-04-2003 08:51 AM

Anxiously awaiting your update! My daughter may be your PNM's rush counselor! She says things are going well. And is looking forward to Bid Bay!

OleMissMom :)

Angels&Arrows 10-04-2003 11:02 AM

PNMs picked-up their invite list, started to fill them out... and then were told to turn them back in!!!! Turns out there is a problem with many of the invites... So they were told to come back at 8:30a to pick-up their corrected invites! She is VERY excited about her invites... but they might be incorrect so I am not going to jinx it! I will update and ASAP!

mmcat 10-04-2003 11:53 AM

best of luck on the next round...
fingers crossed that it all shakes out perfectly.

Angels&Arrows 10-04-2003 01:00 PM

OleMissMom, she might be!!! She thinks one of her four Gamma Chi's is a Theta!

So today at 1p we are going back to Anchor, Arrow, Dagger, Dolphin, Ladybug, and Owl!

Her roommate will be attending Skit Day parties at Arrow, Dagger, Dolphin, Key, Ladybug, and Owl!

I will update later tonight or early morning!

OleMissMom 10-04-2003 01:59 PM

Yep, there was some kind of glitch and they had to redo the whole process. My daughter called it the morning from hell. She said very few girls (less than 10) were totally cut this round but next round would be rough.

Where does your PNM live? Which dorm and which floor?

OleMissMom

hottytoddy 10-04-2003 02:05 PM

I am so glad to hear everyone is having such a great time in Ole Miss Rush. I unfortunately haven't been to the house during rush because I am lying in bed with a fever of 102. It is kinda driving me crazy that I can't be there. But all of my sisters said everything is going really well and they are having a lot of fun. I may try to sneak in the back laster on today just to watch the skit in full affect. I can't breathe on anyone though. Also, my cousin is Madonna in the "Ladybug" skit so I'll have to go see her. Argh! I hate having strep throat!! Glad to hear your cousin is having such a great time.
I am not sure if anyone pasted this earlier but quota this year is 85..but our rush chair said most would get nearly 90.

OleMissMom 10-04-2003 04:32 PM

Just talked to my daughter. All Rush came to a halt for a few minutes as the girls cheered their win over Florida!! Hotty Toddy!!

OleMissMom

hottytoddy 10-05-2003 01:47 AM

I just read some of the previous messages on this thread. As far as the number of sororities at Ole Miss...Yes there are only 9...ZTA closed the year I went through rush (meaning they did not participate in rush that year) and ADPi closed the year before that. I was told by some of my older sisters that they had quality members and they were involved on campus, but they just didn't have enough members to stay open. We all think that there need to be more sororities on campus considering the fact that quota is 85. However, all of the other sororities are already so established that it would be extremely difficult for a new sorority to survive on a campus like Ole Miss.

As far as # of members I think the smallest sorority prior to rush has something like maybe 120-130 members. Probably after rush most will be well over 200. I think we had 214 members at the end of last year but I am not sure now

Angels&Arrows 10-05-2003 02:10 PM

Yesterday was Skit Day.... Panhellenic had the best return rates ever for Skit Day!!!!

My cousin had a great time at Anchor, Arrow, Dagger, Dolphin, Ladybug, and Owl!

The skits were all high energy and fun, though they started to blend together... She said Ladybug's and Owl's were different and stood-out!! She enjoyed all the parties and will be preffing in 15minutes at Anchor, Dagger and Owl!!!

(HottyToddy, she loved the Madonna, she said she was very cute and was even rushed by your cousin!!!)

My cousin's roommate is prffing at Dagger, Key and Owl!!!

breathesgelatin 10-05-2003 02:22 PM

Good luck to cousin at prefs!! :)

hottytoddy 10-05-2003 02:27 PM

Good luck to your cousin & her roommate -all of those are excellent houses!!! You really can't go wrong with any house at Ole Miss so I'm sure they will both be happy with whatever decision they make.
I did get a chance to go and see the last skit party lastnight and everyone looked great & they were all having fun.

NutBrnHair 10-05-2003 02:40 PM

Angels&Arrows -- Thanks for the play-by-play -- I've enjoyed reading this thread. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Angels&Arrows 10-06-2003 12:24 PM

Both my cousin and her roommate had a wonderful time yesterday evening at Pref and said they would be happy in any of the three houses they preffed! I have decided not to post their rankings, out of respect for everyone. They both had a GREAT recruitment and were able to choose the houses they wanted to attend. My cousin was asked back to 9/9 houses on Skit Day and 6/6 houses on Pref! Her roommate was asked back to 8/9 houses on Skit Day and 6/6 houses on Pref! They both feel very blessed and know that not all were so fortunate. I do know that going into SKit Day Ole Miss Panhellenic and the sororities had wonderful return rates... My understanding, though I am sure OleMissMom, MSKKG or HottyToddy might know better; is that the return rates with the new regret with interest also helped ALOT with Pref and this might be the highest % placed PNM group EVER!!!!

Someone asked why Ole Miss does not bring a new group on campus! It is the same old story... That group has to be willing to make the financial commitment, a house would be a must, it would have to be a strong Southern group (because that is how it is in Mississippi) and a group that has not been closed in the last 20 years at Ole Miss or Miss State or they will not survive.

I will post late tonight or tomorrow morning where they both pledge, I am in class when Bids are being handed out and during activities... MSKKG, what about your hometown girls and news?

honeychile 10-06-2003 01:22 PM

Angels & Arrows, I so appreciate your posts! I was the one who questioned - parts of me understand the situation, but the practical part has a hard time with it.

Good luck to both your cousin & her roomie! :)

MSKKG 10-06-2003 02:10 PM

A&A, I haven't heard any hometown news yet. I can hardly wait to hear where everyone pledged!

The PNM that I know from your cousin's hometown e-mailed me this a.m. and said that she was shocked at first. I had wished her a happy b'day and warned her about the loudness. I guess I was a little too late! She didn't mention anything about her invitations and I didn't ask.

breathesgelatin 10-06-2003 02:41 PM

I think regret with interest is a wonderful option.

Can someone who knows which groups where once at Ole Miss and are no longer there PM me with this information? Thanks.

hottytoddy 10-06-2003 04:16 PM

I just found out that we got 91 new members!!! We don't know who they are just yet, just how many. I haven't heard about any of the other houses though. I am so excited we've been also trying to figure out which girls put us as thier first choice so we can get an idea of who we might get and so far we haven't heard of any of our top girls putting anything else fisrt ..so that is good news.
A&A good luck to your cousin & her roomate they will be happy at any of the houses that they prefed.
I am about to go up the the house here in a little while. Can't wait to hear the final results.

mullet81 10-06-2003 05:00 PM

hottytoddy - what house are you in?

was 91 quota?! thats crazy huge! congrats though, i'm sure they're wonderful!

hottytoddy 10-06-2003 06:21 PM

I am I Phi Mu. Quota was 85. We are so excited!!!

MSKKG 10-06-2003 07:17 PM

OK, everyone, the bids must be out by now, at least 12 minutes ago! Why haven't we heard any news?!?

Also, at some point I hope A&A will post something to show which chapters were which . . . you know, Arrow = ?, Anchor = ?, Dolphin = ?, Dagger = ?, and so on. Where did she come up with those anyway?
