Mixed Drinks

I was gonna post this under one of the "diet" threads, but decided to make a new one. I want to lose about 5 pounds so I can fit into this really cute dress that was given to me...the dress is a 2 but I've gained a few pounds over the summer and am more of a 4 now...anyways, I'm not a real big drinker, but I do like having a few mixed drinks when I go out to the bars. My question is which mixed drinks are lowest in calories and which ones are the highest? can an alcohol/nutrition saavy person help me here? :)

mullet81 09-29-2003 05:26 PM

my advice would be to avoid anything sweet and fruity - fruity drinks have mondo calories!!!

maybe try something and diet? like jack and diet coke?

aephi alum 09-29-2003 05:32 PM

You wear a 4? I'm jealous ;)

Avoid beer (except light beer), champagne, dessert wines, liqueurs, and any mixed drinks with fruity or non-diet soda mixers.

Dry table wine and light beer are ok. So is anything mixed with diet soda. Things like gin, vodka, whiskey, etc. are all ok, so something like a martini would also be a good choice.

Don't drink too much though - it's empty calories.

My girlfriends swear by rum and diet coke, I prefer absolut citron and soda with a couple squeezes of lemon. It's very refreshing and super low cal-compared to other drinks!

ChiOqt 09-29-2003 06:44 PM

Yeah I'd stick with the diet cokes and liquors. Maybe a glass of wine here or there.....and Michelob Ultra, even though you might as well just drink water:p

Anchorgirl 09-29-2003 07:03 PM

I like vodka and cranberry's with a squeeze of lime. I recently tried Danzka vodka...grapefruit flavored vodka. Didn't know if I would like it but I tried it and loved it! Plus vodka supposedly has less carbs than other liquors so that is the added bonus. If you don't want juice, you could try it with tonic instead.

What is absolut citron? I don't think I've ever had it. I also like diet coke and rum, but some of the places I like to go to never seem to have diet sodas

i usually drink stoli vanil and diet coke.

TriDeltaGal 09-29-2003 08:53 PM

Mu agd.... I really like that drink too!

My personal fav is smirnoff rasberry with 7-UP...I don't know though, does 7-UP have a lot of calories? That really isn't my first concern when I go out drinking...:D

mu_agd 09-29-2003 08:59 PM

i always drank stoli vanil and ginger ale, but i stopped because of all the calories in ginger ale and switched to diet coke. not sure about the calories in 7-up though.

sigtau305 09-29-2003 10:15 PM

If I'm in the mood, I usually have a Absolute and Coke.

HA

Anyway, rum and diets are good, and diet coke is probably the only diet drink they'll have there. Rails mixed with fruit juice probably wouldn't be too bad either. I'd stay away from sours and mixes. I also recommend gin and diet tonic, although that's usually something you have to make for yourself. I've never been to a bar that carries diet tonic (and I go to a lot of bars).

ADPiSAI 09-29-2003 10:35 PM

rum & diet dr. pepper.
sooooo good...

Rudey, you're funny :)

librasoul22 09-29-2003 11:32 PM

Why not just get shots? That way you don't even have to worry about the mixer and you can still get a buzz going. I recommend 151.

Then again I am an alky, so do with this what you will.

TriDeltaGal 09-30-2003 12:22 AM

librasoul22, you sure must be able to hold your liquor...I can hold mine but 151 is like liquid Fire!!

OrigamiTulip 09-30-2003 01:01 AM

Bloody Mary's might not be too bad calorie wise, and they are my current favorite drink. :)

Jaggergirl 10-05-2003 05:10 PM

mmm, those are really good. Especially during a rowdy brunch but I digress. I second the grapefruit Danzka. the flavoring makes it super smooth so its easy to drink without adding much to it. One of the few vodkas i can drink on ice with no additives. So its like a shot with the added bonus of getting hold something in the bar, which I prefer.

Ginger 10-05-2003 05:20 PM

A good rule of thumb is, the lighter the colour of the alcohol, the fewer the calories.

I'm a vodka and cranberry girl, though I have no idea what that's like calorie wise.

LSUquadkid 10-06-2003 12:44 PM

Danzka is the one that comes in the aluminum bottle, kind of looks like a martini shaker, right? That stuff is pretty good, a friend of mine had that last weekend at our tailgate. It seemed like the aluminum kept the vodka colder, which is always nice. It was also cool, the cops couldnt give us any trouble because we were keeping in line with the no glass rules (and we didnt have to by horrible vodka that came in plastic bottles to do it)

Anchorgirl 10-20-2003 12:51 PM

LSUquadkid -

You're right, it comes in the aluminum bottle. I think I mentioned earlier in this thread that I had tried it and then this weekend I was at a wedding and got to try it again. It was so smooth and so tasty...we were drinking lots of fruity drinks and it went perfectly.

ThetaPrincess24 10-20-2003 02:06 PM

malibu and orange juice or malibu and freshley squeezed lemonade :) yummy or absolut and sprite remix

krazy 10-20-2003 02:12 PM

Hey... whoeer recommended that Grapefruit Vodka from danska... It was so damn good. I had some this weekend. thumbs up...

ThetaGrrl 10-20-2003 02:13 PM

Gin and Tonic has the lowest calories of any mixed drink... if you want to avoid all the sodium that tonic water has, ask for seltzer water instead...

besides the low amount of calories, it is tres chic to order a G&T...

I like mine with extra lime...

Jaggergirl 10-20-2003 04:37 PM

krazy -- awesome! Glad you liked the Danzka. I'm totally hooked on the grapefruit flavor.

Thetagirl, you're right! everyone orders G&Ts in lounges... except I think they taste like pine sol so I stick to my vodka drinks. Plus I think you can do more with vodka in terms of cocktails.

Anchorgirl 10-21-2003 09:50 AM

I like the grapefruit flavor too, but out of curiousity, do you know if they have any other flavors? I love the grapefruit but I bet other flavors would be yummy too.

Mmmm... G&Ts!

I totally feel the pain though. Back in second term of university, I would go back to my hometown every other weekend and go out to the bars with friends.

I would have 8 (eight!) drinks!!!! And I wondered why I gained that frosh 15....

Danzka also makes Citron and Currant, in addition to the regular and Grapefruit flavors. I was out in NYC a few weeks ago and they were a bunch of girls ordering Danzka Grapefruit and Tonics. I knew it was bound to catch on sooner or later. I first got hooked on vanilla flavored vodka, but that got old really quick. I am all about the grapefruit now...

Mixed Drinks

Do you have some strange recipes for cocktails in your country? I've been a bartender for about 5 years and have visited 3 countries (Italy, France and Germany) and I must say there are often strange recipes not found anywhere else :)
What are the strangest recipes you've been asked to mix?

christiangirl 03-15-2007 02:28 PM

Stay away from the Paradise Cosmo, it's got like 7-8 ingredients and 4 of them are fruit juice, so mondo sugar and calories. I agree, just go for a shot. Something clear that still tastes good, like a 99 Blackberry fire shot.

SydneyK 03-15-2007 02:36 PM

lol... drinking advice from christiangirl. I actually did chuckle. :)

It's been 3 1/2 years, I wonder if she's lost those 5lbs yet.;)

Funny. :p

She's probably up to size 6 by now.

(I'm kidding. And, I'd love to be a 6 again.)

I knew someone would go there with me. Jesus' first miracle was making wine. I'm trying to be Christ-like .

Lol, Christians get to have fun, too. I waited till I was 21, that was the only stipulation and I did the time. Now, with God's blessing, I will gladly let life continue to flow.....:)

Isn't it, drink but don't get drunk? Be from the world but not of the world.

That's it. So we should drink....but not get drunk....however, the only way to get drunk is to drink, so I've come to learn the fine line between drunk and tipsy. Then I hover somewhere in the middle. Not be of the world, just really really in it.

AlphaFrog 03-16-2007 07:25 AM

My ex's grandfather was a Catholic Deacon. He went out to get liquor for drinks and got Amaretto, instead of whatever he meant to get. He announced that since bartenders have to drink their mistakes, he needed to drink the whole bottle. That was a fun family gathering.
