suggestions for a new rushee

Hi! i'm a soph. at a state university and am rushing to a sorority on campus. rush started last wed. night with an informal get together with all of the sisters. It was a really fun night. We just drank some fruit punch and played a get to know you game. tonight is the next get together and we're having "mocktails".. aka fake cocktails. i'm very excited for tonight b/c its a semi dressy occasion. I seemed to get along well with all of the girls and was able to go up to any girl and just start chatting! about 5 of the sisters are even in one of my classes and we chat before class starts and what not. My question is, is that this is something i've always wanted to do.. to be a part of a soroity. so to make that possible, so i have a better chance of getting a bid, what are some of the thigns you girls did to get a better chance of getting a bid? Did you hang out with some of the sisters outside of rush events? Im extremely nervous b/c to make quota, the girls can only take 7 newbies and about 15 girls are rushing.. so any advice will DEF. be appreciated!
Thanks,
rox

It sounds like you are already on the right track if you feel comfy with them and you talk before classes.

have fun, be honest, be yourself, smile, and keep us updated.

i'll def. keep you all posted! last week i even mentioned a few ideas for tshirt slogans for our schools homecoming... (the ideas i got from this website!) and they were sooo happy that someone brought up new ideas.. so i told them that the next time we get together, i would have them typed up and they were really estatic about it. i just hope they dont think i'm trying to hard, bc i'm really not trying too hard, i am honestly just trying to help them out, regardless if i get a bid or not.. i think they realize i'm just trying to help bc some can't wait till i bring in the ideas tonight!

roxysrfba 09-25-2003 12:12 PM

hi ya'll!
last night was mocktails night at the sorority which I am rushing.. I had another fantabulous night and I was able to talk to more of the girls and get to know them all a little better and the more I talk to them, the more i am hoping for a bid! At the end of last night the VP of membership announced to us that we will recieve a call if we are invited to their final rush event which is next wed. before I left a few of the girls took me aside, told me how happy they were that I could make it, and that they hope to see me next wed! i'm just sooo nervous though, because I know even though they were being sweet saying they were routing for me, it's not a promise and they can't promise me an invite back. Like I said, they can only take 7 girls to make quota, so this is even more nerve wrecking. Before I left for the night I noticed there were a few girls that I didnt meet earlier so I made sure I went up and introduced myself before I left so at least they know I made the effort! I'm soooo nervous... wish me luck that I get a phone call today or tomorrow!! (hopefully that'll be today sometime!)

texas*princess 09-25-2003 12:21 PM

best of luck!!!!

how many potential members are going to the recruitment events besides yourself?

I hope you get an invite back to your final event!!!!

roxysrfba 09-25-2003 12:23 PM

well last week there were 10 girls, last night there were 9, and when i asked some of the sister how many rushees were there all together (in case someone couldnt make it that night), they told me that there is 9 altogether now.. so that means just two girls get the cut :(

rainbowbrightCS 09-25-2003 01:17 PM

which means you have a 78% to get a bid

When will you find out? On Wens. or before?

Chris

roxysrfba 09-25-2003 01:21 PM

well first i have to find out if i get an invite back to the last invite.. and they didnt say, but i'm guessing i'll get a call b/w now and sunday. they're official bid day is oct. 5th, but the girls said that can always change and be sooner. I'm thinking that after next wed. if they are positive on all the rushees that they want, that bids will be give out with in a few days after that, but i'm not sure.

roxysrfba 09-25-2003 05:28 PM

i got an invite!! and so far, they are only inviting back five girls.

GiantsChic 09-25-2003 05:41 PM

yeah, I am so excited for you.

CONGRATS!!!

AXO_MOM_3 09-25-2003 07:13 PM

Congrats on your invite! I hope you have a wonderful time at the final rush event! Do you know if it will be a preference party? Good luck!

roxysrfba 09-25-2003 07:16 PM

I was told that it is going to be an ice cream social and to celebrate sisterhood. we're going through informal rush this fall (formal is in the spring.. they switched it this year) so it is not a pref. night.

roxysrfba 10-01-2003 01:59 PM

Be yourself--totally natural and amazing. If you can see yourself there, or if there are aspects of their sisterhood you adore, you can say that. :)

Good Luck!

AXO_MOM_3 10-02-2003 01:08 AM

Best of luck to you tonight!

roxysrfba 10-02-2003 09:52 AM

last night went soooooo well. only 4 PNMs were came back so I think that helps with my chances! we all stood around and talked for a little bit and then we made sundaes and what not. AFter our little ice cream we seperated into three groups according to our personality colors and we all had to perform a skit that represented what our personalities were like. I gave an idea for our skit (to pretend that we were in a movie theater watching the two girls act out a scene) and they really liked it, so I was relieved that they didn't think it was dumb or anything. At the end of the night they annoucned that if they want us, we'll get our bids in the next few days.. today or tomorrow! Well, possibly saturday as well but it's parent's day up here and everything will be chaotic. But sometime definetly before sunday! Nows all I can do is hold my breath and wait... wish me luck!

breathesgelatin 10-02-2003 09:58 AM

GOOD LUCK!!

ztabchbum 10-02-2003 10:20 AM

Well good luck! It sounds like everything has gone very well for you thus far and I hope that continues. I think just about everyone on here is rooting for you - including myself.

its now sunday at 10 PM... i dont know what the heck went wrong, I honestly don't.. but, thanks for all the good lucks and what not! i really appreciated it :) :(

*hug* Try not to be too dissapointed, b/c you never know what might happen in the future!!!! Where one door closes, another is going to open!!! I have faith in you that your journey to your "home" is not finished yet! ;)

roxysrfba 10-05-2003 10:39 PM

yeah but see on my campus, this was the only sorortiy i was intereested in joining.. the other ones didn't show the unity that the one i was rushing did. i mean i'm just at a loss for words b/c of how wonderful i clicked with the girls and vice versa. ohh who knows. but it has discouraged me from rushing again in the future.. there are only 4 other sororities on campus and like i said, i never saw the unity with them like i did with Delta zeta. i guess it jsut gets me upset b/c they only needed 7 to fill their quota, they only invited 4 of us back at the last recruitment event, so i thoguht my chacnes were excellent. ohh boy. i cant talk about this bc it's getting me upset again lol
but thanks for the hug!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-05-2003 10:50 PM

Give the other groups a chance. Going to COB events doesn't mean you're "stuck" with them.

GC is FILLED with girls who "knew" what sorority they wanted and thought they knew all they needed to know about the other groups on campus.

GC is also filled with the VERY happy members of "2nd choice" groups.

It's just like formal..... sometimes not getting your first pick works out perfectly after all.

roxysrfba 10-05-2003 10:51 PM

thanks for the advice
we'll see how i feel during the spring i suppose. i guess i'll never say never

I cannot ditto this enough!! Check out the other groups if you have time. It might help, and it certainly can't hurt!

Hey!

Okay so I have a few questions for you.

1.) what school are you at?
2.) how many Glo's are currently at your school?
3.) Are you sure that COB with any other group is not what you want?
4.) what's Greek life like at your school? How important is it? Sounthern? Etc.

I know a ton of girls on campus here that only wanted the TOP house or only wanted this house for whatever reason but ended up with a great house through COB or rushing again!

If you feel like you can't answer my questions on here, please PM me. I would love to help you find your home.

I am not an experienced GC'er, but I can try to give you some advice- like what I would've done in your case.

Rush at UCSC

roxysrfba 10-06-2003 01:06 PM

Daisy,
I attend Kutztown University of PA, and there are 5 sororites here- 3 national and 2 local. And yes I am sure there is no other sorority i want to rush. MY friend and I would really like to start a new national sorority on campus so come spring recruitment, more girls can find a home. Greek life is making its way to popular up here... i believe the more sororities/frats we get, the more popular i think it will become.

SparkliiQTMTSU 10-08-2003 12:48 AM

Hey! Im sorry to hear that you didnt get a bid, but Im glad that youre taking the initiative *sp* to help out other girls at your school find a good home. starting a sorority is going to be tough work, but if it all works out it will be very rewarding. best of luck to you, and we're all here to help.

breathesgelatin 10-08-2003 03:51 AM

Let me just point out that you can't up and start a national NPC sorority without the approval of the Panhellenic Council on your campus. It makes all the approvals for expansion on a campus. If the Panhellenic votes for expansion then A) a local group can be colonized by a national B) a national can come in and form a new colony. I have a sneaking suspicion that not all groups on your campus are at total. This means that your campus Panhellenic would *most likely* not approve expansion. I don't know anything about your individual campus but just a heads-up. Of course, you can always start a local in the hopes of colonization, or explore national multi-cultural/professional/NPHC/NALFO groups (depending on your personal background and interests).

oceanphi01 10-08-2003 09:46 AM

If you want to do this, make sure you research your options. With NPC, there are two ways you can do expansion: if you start a local with the intention of going national or the college panhellenic thinks it's wise to expand. We actually are going through this because the local here wants to go national (which I fully support). I wish you the best of luck whatever you do!

33girl 10-08-2003 10:43 AM

Call me a cynic, but I think the last thing Kutztown (or any of the state system schools, for that matter) needs is another sorority. Just to clarify, according to the website there are 4 national sororities (AST, DZ, Phi Sigma Sigma and Theta Phi Alpha), one local and a Mu Sigma Upsilon interest group.

Plus I believe (by the way you've described it) this was informal/COB rush. Please consider rushing again in spring during formal and getting to know ALL of the sororities before being so insistent that there is only "one" for you. Even if you are an upperclassman, you should still keep an open mind and get to know women from all the groups.

I tend to agree with 33girl... it doesn't seem like there is a big interest in sororities on your campus :( Maybe you should just look into joining next year...
