Kitso's 1st full day as a PE teacher

well, here i am on my lunch break after having taught my first 3 PE classes.

It's kind of funny how little i remember from my elementary and middle school classes, specifically what activities we did at each age. The 8th graders weren't as bad as i thought, i expected them to 'smell blood in the water' and attack. Once i got them going on some ultimate frisbee they soon became more concerned with beating the other team than giving me grief.

OK, and i was SOOO scared of the Kindergarteners, my main experience with kids that age having been with whiny little brats while i worked at Old Navy. All i can say now is wow, some of those little kids are darlin. It's kinda obvious that they don't have many adult male figures in their lives(i'm teaching on one of the poorest schools on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation), cuz as soon as they saw me, they all wanted my attention non-stop. Y'all ever seen kindergarten cop? That's kitso, trying to teach em duck, duck goose with 2 little girls hanging from my arms and a boy trying to tackle me. but it was really cool :D

the third graders weren't that bad either, gave em some frisbees and they went to town.

This afternoon i've got the 4th grade, 6th grade(the bad class) and the 7th graders. Guess we'll see how my patience is.

(to spite optimist) Pray for me,

Kitso

I agree totally....if I had a child :)

Kitso, Glad to hear all is going pretty well with the kiddies on this first day. Just don't let them see you sweat, and all will be good (now, if only I had known that advice when I was student teaching....:p )

I'm so jealous of all these children spending time with you ;)

lol

i coulda used that whip this afternoon.

The 4th graders weren't bad at all.

the 6th graders, which is a class that is notorious for being bad wasn't as bad as usual. Course, maybe it's cuz one of em stole my CD's out of my office last week and i got the school Tribal Police Officer to go down to their homeroom and bust some heads.

The seventh graders just quit on me. Didn't want to do anything. Half of em just walked off the field and sat down. I think when they've got class next week i'm just gonna run off a bunch of packets and when they show up, give em a packet and tell em to hit the bleachers and start working on it. If they ask why i'm gonna say, "well, its either the activity for the next 2 weeks(ultimate frisbee) or book work and tuesday y'all didn't seem too interested in ultimate frisbee"

Kitso
KS 361 times y'all obviously weren't praying enough

Does everyone remember the physical fitness tests we had to do back in the day?!? How many situps you could do in a minute, the mile run, sit and reach, and my personal favorite ( ) hanging from the bar! Do kids these days still have to do all that?

Congrats AggieSigmaNu361!! It sounds like youre doing a great job!

mmcat 09-24-2003 07:54 AM

running laps is a good thing...
seventh grade girls don't want to sweat. we all know that.
go get them, dude -- and have some fun.

aephi alum 09-24-2003 10:06 AM

Kitso, sounds like you're an awesome PE teacher. I can just picture you with the kindergarteners :D

I hated PE. Had a PE teacher in elementary school who refused to give anyone a grade higher than C.

I remember those physical fitness tests... I also remember that it was part of the "President's Physical Fitness Program" or whatever it was called. That was the only thing I had against Reagan...

Hey, here's an idea for the 7th graders. During my senior year of high school, my HS changed the gym program to include a "wellness unit" for the frosh/sophs. For about 4 weeks, they met in a classroom instead of the gym, talked about things like the importance of a lifetime of eating right and exercising, and had homework and tests. If the 7th graders keep acting up, how about threatening them with a wellness unit? ;)

361 times I wish someone as cool as Kitso had been the PE teacher at my school :)

DeltAlum 09-24-2003 11:05 AM

Don't let the little ankle-biters get you down. The teeth marks will heal in time.

Only time I ever really got into big trouble in school was in junior high school PE.

No, do be that guy.

I am working with some of the kids at my school now and you HAVE to have your boundaries set immediately or they will walk all over you.

The first day I worked with them I tried being nice and that got me nowhere. I came in the next day with the benefit of my Mother's 20+ years of teaching advice to take no shit and that day got RESULTS. Not only did they actually listen, they had a lot more respect for me when they knew I wasn't going to take shit from them.

Plus I brought cookies, lol. Those who do good work WILL be rewarde when they work with me.

Don't be hatin'. I loved those things. I was a queen at flexed arm hang and wall sits/squats. :) But, I'm with you on that 600 yard dash.

Yeah, the Presidential Physical Fitness test. I never got it cuz i always sucked at pull-ups. pull-ups are hard for a husky little boy :D

I'm actually thinking that i'm gonna do this in the spring semester. Start with a pre-test to see where they're at, then maybe spend part of class time every day doing situps, pushups, pull ups, etc. At the end of the semester we'll retest and see how much everyone improved.

Gotta see if i can find a website with this on it now :)

Kitso
KS 361 times i felt bad cuz i couldn't do a pull up

Optimist Prime 09-24-2003 12:25 PM

Make them do it or tell them they'll fail if they don't and you will call their parents. These kids might need some one to talk to. Make them run laps. Run with them. Coach football? Yeah, you should be the football coach. Just don't look at the cheerleaders, you'll get fired.

Sounds like you have the makings of a fantastic teacher.

I had an evil teacher that made us SQUARE DANCE...another taught us waltzing moves to the Beatles "Rubber Soul"...and the worst was having to listen to a wretched 33 1/3 RECORD of The Captain and Tennille "Love Will Keep Us Together" for musical chairs/freeze tag/statues etc....That song has haunted me my whole life and I am sure that somehow it is related to my clown phobia.

I think Kitso needs an authoratative hat like "The Captian's" Also the music for this song is SO 1970's CHEESY PORNO. Bow - bow bow bow bow bow bow - bow bow. I included a picture to PROVE the porno aspect. My sister had a 'Dynamite" magazine with those two pictured on it.

Love, Love will keep us together
Think of me babe whenever
Some sweet talking guy comes along singing his song
Don't mess around,
You got to be strong
Just Stop, 'cause I really love You
Stop, I'll be thinking of you
Look in my heart and let love keep us together

You, You belong to me now
Ain't gonna set you free now
When those guys start hanging around talking me down
Hear with your heart and you won't hear a sound
Just Stop, 'cause I really love you
Stop, I'll be thinking of you
Look in my heart and let love keep us together

Whatever young and beautiful
Someday your looks will be gone
When the others turn you off
Who'll be turning you on

I will, I will, I will, I will
Be there to share forever
Love will keep us together
Said it before and I'll say it again while others pretend
I'll need you now and I'll need you then
Stop 'cause I really love Ya
Stop I'll be thinking of Ya
Look in my heart and let love keep us together

uh,

there will be no porno music in my classes. These kids are young and impressionable.

and there's no way in hell we're diong any kind of dancing. I'm having a hard enough time getting these kids to play ultimate frisbee, if i pull that dancing crap out i'm likely to get stabbed.

But you don't have a problem with the hat, just the dancing and the hideous 70's music? In fact I am sure we have plenty of hats we could lend you around here. Definitely a Viking helmet and a rhinestone tiara are ready at hand.
