Pledges Steal Socks From Wal-mart

SIU probing thefts, sorority

Southern Illinois University Carbondale officials have launched an investigation into two students' claims they stole merchandise from a local store as part of their initiation into a sorority.

Two pledges — Jamila Coachman, 23, of Carbondale, and Renita Davis, 19, of Riverdale — were arrested in June after stealing nearly $200 worth of items, primarily socks, from a Wal-Mart in Carbondale. They pleaded guilty earlier this month to misdemeanor theft and each was sentenced to 18 months court supervision.

Austin said during that hearing the women's attorneys told the judge that the two knew what they did was wrong but that they wanted to join the sorority.

These girls are fine examples of stupidity at its best.

Keep in mind, of course, that they must be pure white socks - no off-white, no colored piping, etc...

"And the sock is our sacred symbol, because our feet are always cold. Now we will demonstrate our secret handshake: each of you puts a sock over your right hand, then you shake..."

Well, excuuuuuuuuse me, but not every college town has a selection of high-end stores to choose from. Carbondale has Famous-Barr, JCPenney and then it's pretty much discounters. You gotta work with what's available. It's not as if they were at Northwestern, where they could tool over to an upscale mall or into Chicago and hit Saks, Bloomingdale's, or the boutiques off the north end of Michigan Boulevard.

You misunderstood what I meant (looking back over my post I can see how that would easily be possible!). All I meant is that, as socks at Wal-mart are cheap, 200 dollars in Wal-mart socks is going to come to a lot more socks than 200 dollars in, say, Nordstrom's socks.

If you're going to make your pledges steal something, why would it be millions of socks, of all things?

Haha like in Platteville - Wal-Mart and K-Mart. My chapter loves to come visit me in the "big" city now. ;)

Ginger 09-19-2003 04:30 PM

Yall had a Walmart AND a K-Mart? Kath, you were living large. Whitewater had a Walmart.... and that was it. If you were really adventurous, there was a 'mall' in Janesville... if you can call it that :)

Tom Earp 09-19-2003 04:36 PM

What a great excuse to steal socks! Da, I wanted to join a Soroity!

Hell, Fraternitys are bigger, I am stealing this car off of a car lot, I want to join a Fraternity!:p

Dumb is as Dumb does!:o

Designergal3 09-19-2003 04:36 PM

Hey nothing wrong with Wal Mart!

My favorite stores myself are Benetton, Express, & Bebe.

But I am also a crazy raging Target queen....god they have the most BEAUTIFUL red jacket there.... *i want i want* If you can look gorgous for really cheap, why not?

and I was thinking the same as Sugar&Spice...that is one hell of ALOT of socks. $6 for a bundle of 6 most likely as opposed to $10 for a pair at Nordstrom...kinda scary if you think about it...like what on earth would they DO with that many socks???

Way to represent your organization, new members! I wonder whose idea that was-- theirs or their local chapter's? This is a great lesson of why we think before we act 1) Am I going to look like an idiot when I am caught (because somewhere down the line, the truth will come out), 2) Will my organization become a laughingstock because of my poor decision making and representation of my GLO.

I agree-- not too smart.

D'oh! Yes, Designergal3, you're right. What can I say -- it's Friday, and most of the neurons had taken off early; the few that were left were hanging around complaining about either the new TV season or how much work they had to do, so of course they conflated "Michigan Avenue" and "Boul' Mich' " -- thus coming up with something to type that was neither the actual name nor a nickname. Bad neurons!

DeltAlum 09-19-2003 06:39 PM

I suppose the bottom line is that this sorority allegedly asked its' pledges to break the law. Whether at Walmart of Sax really makes no difference.

Insanity still reigns.

CatStarESP4 09-19-2003 06:43 PM

That is stupidity at it's absolute worst. What were they thinking? Idiots!!!!

STOOPID!

What a bunch of idiots. Technically they could have been charged with a felony since it was over $100.

If I remember right in most GLOs if you are charged with a felony you are out of the GLO.

Stoopid and the sisters who told them to steal need their butts kicked

I bought socks at Wal*Mart a couple days ago. They are $8.00 for a dozen pairs of white tube socks. (so $200.00 worth of stolen socks/$8.00 a package = 25 packages of 12). I wonder why anyone would want to steal 300 pairs of socks! Also, how can two people try to steal this much and avoid detection by employees at the same time?

Rio_Kohitsuji 09-20-2003 11:11 PM

Hmm...how were they trying to sneak the socks out of the store? Were they taking about 20 trips outside w/newly stuffed bras?

The question in my mind is this.

Who is the most stupid...

The women who stole the socks or whomever in the chapter made it part of the initiation?

I vote for the second -- although it's close.

CC1GC 09-21-2003 08:07 PM

These girls are stupid because everyone knows you can't steal from wall-mart and get away with....anways, at least they're only stealing socks instead of stealing alcohol, getting trashed at a party, driving home drunk and killing themselves...

The Southern Illinoisan says that they were pledges of Sigma Gamma Rho. The article also states that that one of the two isn't even an SIUC student anymore.

THE SOUTHERN

CARBONDALE — The Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. sorority's name has
been
cleared on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus.

A student judiciary hearing was held on campus Thursday where it was
revealed the organization had no part in a misdemeanor theft
incident over the summer, according to Sigma Gamma Rho members.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Larry Dietz said
the hearing took place to determine whether restrictions would be
lifted from the group.

Two SIUC students, Jamila Coachman, 23, of Carbondale and Renita
Davis, 19, of Riverdale were found guilty in September in circuit
court in Jackson County of stealing $195.64 worth of socks from the Carbondale Wal-Mart on June 16. The women claimed they had stolen the items as part of an initiation into Sigma Gamma Rho.

Coachman's and Davis' claims prompted Assistant State's Attorney for Jackson County Linda Austin to send a letter to the university's student development office, warning that such behavior would not be tolerated.

Austin was unavailable for comment Friday.

SIUC spokeswoman Sue Davis confirmed the allegations placed against the sorority were found to be untrue. "The Wal-Mart incident was in no way connected with Sigma Gamma Rho," she said.

Nelida Hubbard, a 19-year-old sorority member, said in Thursday's hearing, university officials revealed that the two women had lied about their involvement with Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc.

"These two girls had nothing whatsoever to do with this
organization," Hubbard said.

Members of the sorority said they don't do initiations or hazing.
SIUC officials had placed temporary restrictions on Sigma Gamma Rho, which kept the women from participating as an organization in last week's SIUC homecoming celebration.

Ciara Perry, a 21-year-old sorority member and senior, said neither Davis nor Coachman were present at Thursday's hearing. "The number one question we wanted to ask them was, why?" she said.

Ta Vaughn Moore, 20, said her fellow sorority members can only guess why the two women pinpointed Sigma Gamma Rho. "I don't think they knew the severity of what they did," she said.

For the past month and a half, the sorority members have been the butt of on-campus jokes and have had to face the suspicions of professors and even family members, they said.

"We were at a loss, because someone cried wolf," Hubbard said.

Moore said the sorority held no animosity toward either Davis or
Coachman, but she said what happened to Sigma Gamma Rho could happen to any fraternity or sorority. She said it was unfortunate it happened to them, but confidently added the sorority will rise above the problem.

Hubbard said she and the rest of the group are happy they have
cleared their name.

"Bad news travels really fast, and we want people to know we had no part in this," she said. "It's such an exciting thing when justice is served."

Sigma Gamma Rho has 16 active members. Tonea Simmons is president and Tiffany Davis is vice president.

sfasammy 10-22-2003 06:31 PM

Sigma Gamma Rho should sue Coachman and Davis for defamation of character, as the sorority's reputation was compromised by their false and slanderous statements to police.

I'm glad that Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. and the ladies of the SIU chapter have been completely cleared of any involvement. It's so unfortunate that the allegations threatened to tarnish SGR's name. Good that SGR was vindicated!

If it's possible for the sorority to do so, I say sue the pants off these "women" (using the term "women" loosely here).
