Mother's/Father's pins

There's a thread in the DG forum with a discussion of whether or not it's appropriate/acceptable to give your mom a DG mother's pin if she's in another GLO, and whether she'd be likely to wear it. (Pretty pin, btw :) )

I know a bunch of GLOs have mother's and/or father's pins (AEPhi, sadly, not being among them) - so I was wondering:

Ladies:

If your daughter joined your sorority and gave you a mother's pin, how often would you wear it? Alone or with your badge?

If your daughter joined a different sorority from yours and gave you a mother's pin, how often would you wear it? Alone or with your badge?

If your son joined a fraternity and gave you a mother's pin, how often would you wear it? Alone or with your badge?

If you had several kids who went Greek, how would you handle your collection of mother's pins? ;)

Gentlemen:

Same questions, with the obvious reversal of gender :)

Also: For those of you whose orgs offer mother's/father's pins, what rules do you have regarding where and when they're worn? (e.g. must be in pin attire, not to be worn while consuming alcohol, etc...)

aephi alum 09-18-2003 01:12 PM

1. N/A since AEPhi doesn't have a mother's pin. If we were to offer one, I'd wear it proudly with my badge - particularly to sorority functions.

2. I'd probably only wear another org's mother's pin to functions hosted by that org (e.g. my daughter's chapter has a Mother's Day brunch). Probably with my badge, unless the org's "mother's pin rules" said otherwise.

3. Ditto for a son.

4. Since I'd probably only be wearing a mother's pin to one of my children's GLO's event, I'd only be wearing one at a time. (I threw this question out there, in part, to see how carnation would answer it... ;) )

IvySpice 09-18-2003 01:30 PM

This is totally hypothetical of course, but as long as the rules allowed it, I'd wear everything at once! That'd be especially true, say, if I had a bunch of kids in different GLOs. I think it would be great to show that rivalries are silly and that the family is bringing it all together.

Mother's pin

My mother usually wears her AOII mother's pin by itself whenever we go somewhere together. We have been shopping and at a flower show and were stopped by women stating, "Oh, I have one of those!"

She wears both her mother's pin and her AOII badge at AOII functions.

You'd never see a Sigma Nu's father wearing his badge.

The only place you'd be likely to see a Sigma Nu's mother wearing his badge is to his (the Sigma Nu's) funeral.

AlphaPhiBubbles 09-18-2003 03:30 PM

Erm...well Alpha Phi doesn't have anything like that but I'd have to say I'd be really hesitant to wear a pin from another sorority, just because it would be showing my loyalty to another sorority, not my daughter. I think I would wear it at one of her events though...and I wear my active pin now any time I dress up (even if it's just for school) so I will probably do that when I get older too.

It wouldnt be that different for a fraternity pin/my son...cuz it would just be weird wearing a frat pin...like i said i would wear it to his functions though.

AGDAlum 09-18-2003 03:48 PM

I gave my mother an AGD Mothers Pin (no apostrophe, per AGD). I think she wore it once. (I ought to see if it's in the jewelry box that my sister inherited.)

That said, I think it could certainly be worn if the mother is in another GLO. It is a Mothers (Mother's) Pin, not a badge. If the mother chose to wear it with her badge, the pin would go under hers, the same way that a men's badge would be worn. (IMO).

Lil' Hannah 09-18-2003 03:49 PM

I think there may be some confusion...

Organizations (such as DG) have special pins that are only for mothers of initiated members. So it's not the actual anchor badge, but a pin that is a suggestion of our Pi Alpha new member pin.

Here's the original thread, with a picture of our Mother's pin.http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...threadid=39630

That being said, I would probably wear only the mother's pin to her functions, but if I had a son I think I would be more comfortable wearing his mother's pin with my anchor badge.

Re: Mother's/Father's pins

I think mother's pins are really special. I hope to get one someday! My thoughts on your questions:

If your daughter joined your sorority and gave you a mother's pin, how often would you wear it? Alone or with your badge?
I would wear it alone AND with my badge in any situation calling for badge attire...I don't think the mother's pin has the same rules that the badge does, so I'd probably get to wear it more often.

If your daughter joined a different sorority from yours and gave you a mother's pin, how often would you wear it? Alone or with your badge?
I'd have to check and see if our rules conflict, but I think I would wear it to functions sponsored by her sorority, but with my golden lamp badge, placed just below (if the situation required badge attire). I know we can wear fraternity badges of our husbands or Order of Omega pins, but they have to be below the DZ badge. If it was not badge attire, I'd wear the mother's pin, but then wear my DZ crest necklace to show my affiliation. I think to receive a mother's pin would be incredibly sweet, and I don't really think it would signify my being loyal to her sorority, but supportive of her membership in that sorority....

If your son joined a fraternity and gave you a mother's pin, how often would you wear it? Alone or with your badge?
Same as above, but I'd probably wear it to my own sorority functions as well...

If you had several kids who went Greek, how would you handle your collection of mother's pins? ;)
I only have 2 kids, so it would probably be manageable...but more than that, I'd probably just wear them one at a time.

For those of you whose orgs offer mother's/father's pins, what rules do you have regarding where and when they're worn? (e.g. must be in pin attire, not to be worn while consuming alcohol, etc...)
I'm not sure there are any written rules regarding our mother's/father's pins...maybe some other GC DZ will know? I've never given one b/c my Dad wouldn't wear it (he's in construction!) and my mom passed away before I got to college....

I was so proud to present my mom with an "ASA Mom" coffee mug at a mother's day brunch we hosted one year.

When I got home, I found out she had designated it to soak the kibble in hot water for the dachshund's dinner.

God only knows what she would have done with a pin....

More seriously, we have a nice "Mother Patroness" pin, which we gave to girl's moms who were really helpful with our chapter. We're so geographically isolated - 2 1/2 hours from the nearest city - that we had very little alumna/advisor support. We had to rely heavily on the parents of the girls who had grown up in State College - there were always one or two in the sorority - for advisor/adult help/ "borrow your house or hunting cabin/borrow your pickup truck" type stuff, and we either made them a Phoenixman or Mother Patroness. http://www.burrpatt.com/alphasigmaalpha/ASAPins.asp

I don't think most of our moms would have any conflict with wearing it, though; since this was a state college in Pennsylvania, most of our moms had not been in sororities when they were in college (if they had even gotten to go to college).

GeekyPenguin 09-19-2003 11:07 AM

My mom is starting to look into AI and should she choose Gamma Phi, she has said she wants to wear the mother's pin as a guard on her badge. Should she choose another GLO (causing me to disassociate myself from our family ;)) I think she'd wear it under the badge, similiar to how sweetheart badges or Order of Omega badges are worn.

And I thought I was the only one subjected to stuff like that

I took my mom to a mother/daughter brunch in college and she spent most of the ride home making fun of things like our friendship circle and how emotional our alumnae got when we were singing "Delta Zeta Lamps are Burning"

My mom's actually not an uncouth person, but she certainly doesn't "get" the greek thing

honeychile 09-19-2003 12:36 PM

First of all, if a daughter of mine pledged a sorority other than ADPi, she would need to listen to the commitment she made to honor her group first, and realize that I must do the same. This would be assuming that she survived the obvious guilt trip.

Yes, I would wear a Mother's pin. Yes, it would be worn at the same time as my ADPi pin, but just under it. And yes, I would wear both at the times I usually wear my pin. Ditto for a son (except the guilt trip, that is!)

Has anyone ever seen photos of DAR women who wear a gazillion pins, each signifying a Revolutionary War ancestor or something similar? When I read this thread, I immediately pictured Carnation wearing something similar, albeit in Greek mode!

Mothers/Fathers pins are different from the badge.

Pi Phi has a Mothers pin. I thought about giving one to my mum, but I don't think she'd wear it.

Although if I had a daughter and she gave me a mothers pin, regardless of organization I would wear. But I think I would only wear it to functions hosted by her organization, and I would wear my badge with the pin (if rules permitted it) to show my affiliation.

Same if I had a son.

Kristin AGD 09-19-2003 12:57 PM

I really, really hope that I get to wear the Alpha Gam mother's pin someday. But I have to wait thirteen years to find out! :D And I am not in any hurry. ;)

But if I do I would wear it as we wear anything else with our badge, to the left and slightly lower than the badge.

And if my daughter were to join another group, I would wear the mother's pin proudly. The only time I probably would not wear it would be to official Alpha Gam events like helping out at rush or convention.

DAR badges

So funny that you should mention the DAR badges....

My mom has a a TRIPLE, YES, TRIPLE DAR ribbon that is completely filled with badges. She is a small lady, and the badges are just awesome! I am the DAR Insignia Chair in our chapter; but no, I do not have even a 1/5 of the badges that my mom wears!

As you can probably guess, my family is realy into pins and badges....

;)

Yes, I am here on GreekChat when I should be busily printing out DAR applications, as I'm Registrar for our chapter.

I find the one ribbon a little uncomfortable, and have been putting off going for #2. After listening to two DAR ladies explaining how their dresses are reinforced to handle the weight of the pins appropriately (one wears a hook over her shoulder, I decided to slow down! But I did find two riders this summer! Woo Hoo!

AOIIsilver 09-19-2003 08:54 PM

DAR Ribbon

Rather than a hook, my mom's triple ribbon has three horizontal metal stays in the back with three pin backs plus a couple of push backs to hold it in place. Mom and I have matching DAR dresses for summer and winter, and we always go to meetings dressed alike. :)
SO glad to meet another DAR lady! Where is your chapter?

I'm in Col. William Wallace Chapter, in the Southwest Region of PA. Our current State Regent is from our chapter, and is now running for a National position.

Are you into genealogy? I took the DAR Genie course in DC last year, and am on the "Speaker's Circuit" for members and would-be members. The course is terribly interesting - hard, but interesting! I get to go into the vaults & such as a volunteer! :)

What chapter are you in?

Wow! That is wonderful! Do you have a state or chapter web page?

VERY into family history. My mom and dad host no less than 4 family reunions per year. When I lived in DC, my family would visit for a week just to see the National Archives. We would be there everday at open and closing time! One of the archivists was very kind to me and pulled my great-great-great grandfather's pension records. NOT the archived paper copies that can usually be requested for close inspection. The ORIGINAL paper and wax sealed copies! So wonderful!

I am SO jealous that you have taken the course. I would love to take one, but we have so many sick family members that we are all scared to leave town for more than a day trip.....

Now I know who to PM for DAR help! YEAH!

By the way, did you know that headquarters has been closed the past two days because of the storm?

Woops: Edited to Add: Shelby Chapter in Tennessee! :)

Not yet. Do you have one?

Don't you just love moments like that? I was once allowed to hold the paybook where my Patriot signed for his pay - with the gloves on, of course!

I'm sorry to hear about your family! :( I keep saying that we could have a family reunion in a linen closet and still have room for a punch bowl - there aren't too many of us left.

The class is from 8am (sharp!) to 3:30pm, and one night, the three of us who were juniors went out on the town - to the National Archives! We did hit a restaurant afterwards, but this course keeps you running all over the place, so most of us would show up at 7am instead of 8am! On the first day, at 9:40 am, I have written "Officially At Sea!" I was raised by a genealogist, and was shocked by how quickly SO much information is doled out! When I volunteered this summer, some things had already changed (for the better, I'm happy to say!).

Now I know who to PM for DAR help! YEAH!

I hadn't heard about HQ closing, but it doesn't surprise me. They are SO security conscious since 9/11, and with good reason. The amount of priceless documents in there is amazing. Oh, one more funny thing - they were taping "West Wing" while I was there! WW uses HQ a lot for backgrounds, since they're so similar!

Is your chapter at all connected to Shelby Foote? I have such a weird crush on him...

WOW! The National Archives is absolutely fabulous! I really miss going there.

Our chapter web page is
Shelby Chapter

I do not know who is Shelby Foote.... Shelby was the last name of our chapter ancestor.

This has been a tough year for our family. So many passing on...

Let me know what DAR activities you are doing. We might cross paths!

Your chapter's website is lovely!! I was tickled to see a Dixie Parker, as my mama's name is Dixie Lee!

I just realized that I misled you earlier - we went to the Library of Congress, not the National Archives! I just LOVE the National Archives, but am hopelessly lost at the Library of Congress! One of the other juniors is a descendent of Augustine Washington, and she was able to find a property transaction while we were there; the rest of us came up empty. But the Archives! Heaven! I also like the little small town libraries where they have really interesting bits of information. One of my Confederate ancestors died in the Confederate Soldiers Home in Pikesville, MD, and when we were looking for information, one of the librarians at the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore took my number. She called about 2 months later with the dirt! We were amazed by her generosity of time!

Now, if we can get aaduncan here, we will have officially hijacked this thread completely!! :D

My mom thought all of the mother-daughter DZ stuff was great! She loved it! I think she would wear a mother's pin if I moved back to TX and she was invited to a founders' day celebration or the spring fashion show or something, but those occasions would be less frequent now that I am alum. I should have given her one when I was initiated!
