Your School's Goofy Cheer

So while I was watching football this weekend, I realized that a lot of schools have cheers that are kinda goofy, and I want to know the whole cheer/the story behind them, etc. For example, Auburn's War Eagle and KU's Rock Chalk. I went to a very traditionless school and I want to live vicariously through you all.

Hannah,

i had the same question about Rock Chalk during March Madness. alphagam-alum posted this for me....

Quote:

The Rock Chalk Chant is perhaps the most distinctive cheer in all of college sports. Some have likened it to a Gregorian chant, but anyone who has been in Allen Fieldhouse and heard the chant start low, then build and roll over the crowd knows that it is much, much more.

The "Rock Chalk" chant dates to 1866, when it was adopted by the University Science Club. A chemistry professor, E.H.S. Bailey and some of his associates were returning to Lawrence from Wichita on a train. As the story goes, they passed the time by trying to create a rousing cheer. The sound of the train's wheels on the rails suggested a rhythm and a cadence to them. At first, the cheer was "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU" repeated three times.

Even though KU didn't have a football team until four years later, KU students quickly took up the chant. Later, an English professor suggested "Rock Chalk," in place of "Rah, Rah" because it rhymed with Jayhawk and because it was symbolic of the limestone, also known as chalk rock, surrounding Mount Oread, the site of the Lawrence Campus. It became the official cheer of the University in 1897.

Teddy Roosevelt pronounced the Rock Chalk Chant the greatest college chant he'd ever heard. It was used by Kansas troops fighting in the Philippines in 1899, the Boxer Rebellion in China, and World War II. At the Olympic games in 1920, the King of Belgium asked for a typical American college yell. The assembled athletes agreed on KU's Rock Chalk and rendered it for His Majesty.

The words to the chant are simple. "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, KU" repeated five times. The chant is special not because of the words, but because of the tone in which it is chanted and the distinctive cadence in which each verse is delivered. The only way to really appreciate the chant is to sit in Allen Fieldhouse before a Missouri game.

War Eagle isn't any goofier than Roll Tide ;)

Lil' Hannah 09-08-2003 12:11 PM

I was just using those 2 as an example. I want many many goofy cheers. Maybe some that are only borderline goofy. Bring 'em on.

MereMere21 09-08-2003 12:16 PM

yeah but I never pass an opportunity to poke at Bama :p

everyone always boo hoos Auburn - 'whats war have to do with eagle' 'why is the mascot a tiger if the fight song has an eagle'
blah blah blah

I like goofy cheers, it makes the games fun :)

If you don't know already, My school (University of Wisconsin) has some of the raunchest and innapropriate cheers of the Big Ten! National TV will not broadcast shots of our student section, because we are so out of controll most of the time. Here are a few of the standards:

**Rated PG-13**

- The student section is sections L through P. The O section has its own cheer. They lift their arms to make an "O" and scream O at random points during the game. The other sections make the same arm gesture, but also thrust their hips and scream "Oh, Oh, Oh" mimicing you know what.
- The O section usually relates by yelling "N sucks P" and pointing to the sections as they yell.
-For no reason at all, besides for the fun of it, one section will tell a nearby section to "Eat Sh*t" and then the next section will turn back and reply "F*ck you". Its insane to see a good 300 turn and say this.
- Our Cheerleaders have signs that say "We" and "Want" and "More". After they hold up all 3, the students scream "BEER".
- The band also plays certain music that we have to dance to. Which includes clapping while moving leaning forward and back and accerating to the music. Since half the stadium is drunk a good portion of people fall off their chairs.(We also stand the ENTIRE game)
- We also have our own takes on the wave and we do "rowing", where everyone in a section sits down and grabs the person in front of them shoulders and rows back and forth. Also a time where drunks fall off the bleachers.
- One of the more wholesome cheer, but strange none the less is the "If you wannabe a Badger song". If you really want the lyrics I can post them, but this post is getting long enough.

There are many more that I cant even think of. But if you ever have a chance to come to a Wisconsin Football game(Other sports have other cheers)its definately an experice of a lifetime. Despite our naughty cheers I love my school!

Does everyone always sit in the same sections? Are they assigned to you or is it just an unspoken thing?

We ARE naughty.

MiAngel, did you hear they're not going to play "Jump Around" anymore because some of the alumni and press complained?

PM_Mama00 09-08-2003 07:35 PM

Ummm... Michigan doesn't really have anything funny. We do the wave. We do it slow, fast, split down the middle. 100,000 + people doin this and it looks awesome.

half of the student section yells Go... the other half Blue. It's cool when most of the stadium catches on and you get that delayed reaction echo.

To the tomahawk music thing, some people say yoooooooo suuuuuuuckkkkkk yooooooooo suckkkkk YOU SUCK! Haven't caught on to that tho.

Key plays, everyone busts out their keys. That could be a sports thing tho.

Leslie anymore you can think of?

winnieb 09-08-2003 07:41 PM

Just want to say-- the RockChalk chant is not goofy at all--- it is actually incredible to hear. :)

Georgia Tech's Geek Cheer is my favorite goofy cheer of all time. It goes something like this (any GA Tech GCers please correct me if I screw part of it up...)

Secant, tangent, cosine, sine
3 Point 1-4-1-5-9
Square roots, cube roots
Placants, brackets
Dis-integrate them , Yellow Jackets!

I love it! Silly me for not going there when they recruited me - if that cheer had been in the book, I would have been there.

And ya'll really haven't seen anything until you see a Wisconsin game - my high school has a section for seniors called Gators (after UF) that is basically practice for Badger games. :) In band (not marching band, concert band) we had to learn our high school fight song and "On Wisconsin," both music and vocals.

Rio_Kohitsuji 09-08-2003 09:44 PM

Arg. I hate Rio.

This is how one of them goes:

Band plays the "chop song" you all know what that is, think Cleveland Indians.
*do chop motion* Riooooooooooooo Rioooooooooooo

Yeah. That sucks.

However..back in high school I would lead the band in this cheer:

Strawberry shortcake,
banana split,
we make the other team/band/whatever look like sh...
SHIFT to the left, shift to the right,
Stand up, sit down,
Fight fight fight!

MIT has a cheer like that, too:

E to the U du dx,
E to the X dx!
Cosine, secant, tangent, sine, 3.14159!
Integral radical mu dv
Slipstick, sliderule, MIT!

That cheer made me wish I was smart enough to go to MIT. :)

The Hog Call for the University of Arkansas
is very recognizable in these parts. The stadium gets deafeningly loud, enough that parents make their kids wear ear plugs.

Woooooooooo, Pig ! Sooie!
Woooooooooo, Pig ! Sooie!
Woooooooooo, Pig ! Sooie!
Razorbacks!!

Also during the game one side of the stadium chants Arkansas! and the other side responds with Razorbacks! which sounds awesome as it echoes across the place.

TriDeltaGal 09-08-2003 10:02 PM

MiAngel711, I think I went to the wrong college...your football games sound like so much fun.

At UCLA, we don't have anything that fun but we do have cardshows, you know when the entire student sections holds up different color cards to spell out words and create pictures. Supposedly, we are on of the only schools that still does this or the oldest...I don't really remember but UCLA really prides itself on its cardshows and I must admit, it does look pretty cool.

The only chant I could think of that UCLA does is the Eight Clap:

Its pretty simple:

Clap 8 times fast
U (clap three more times)
C (clap three more times)
L (long L, and clap three more times)
A (clap three more times)
U-C-L-A, fight, fight, fight

During the weeks near the SC game, fight, fight, fight becomes f@#k SC.

Ahh good times...

DeltAlum 09-08-2003 10:12 PM

When I was the announcer for the Ohio University Marching Band, it had a cheer that I certainly can't explain -- and probably can't spell. I don't think they do it anymore.

I'll give it a shot phonetically, but I can't duplicate the rythm...

It went:

Frey Magonda...(whole band says this)
Magonda Frey...(band)
Ah Bo Day...(one member says this)
Hey...(band)
Ah Bo Day...(one member)
Hey...(band)
AhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhBo Day...(one member)
Hey, Hey, Hey! (band)

(Don't ask me)

AlphaSigOU 09-08-2003 10:14 PM

In the olden days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, Oklahoma used to have this cheer:

"Hi-rickety-whoop-de-do...
Boomer Sooner, Okla-U!"

All we do nowadays is play 'Boomer Sooner' or 'Go Big Red'. On every kickoff, everyone watches the kicker as he meakes his run to the ball as everyone says: "OOOOOOOOOOOO...." Once he makes contact with the ball and kicks it , "U!" is said. We leave the rowdy cheering for the 'Ruf/Neks', the male cheer squad that maintains the Sooner Schooner.

PiEp299 09-08-2003 10:18 PM

here's another fight song I know of. It's for the University of Idaho:

Vandal Fight Song

Came a tribe from the North brave and bold,
Bearing banners of Silver and Gold,
Tried and true to subdue all their foes,
Go Vandals! Go mighty Vandals!
Go, Vandals go,
Fight on with hearts brave and bold,
Foes will fall before your Silver and your Gold,
The victory cannot be withheld from thee,
So all bear down for Idaho,
Come on old Vandals go!
I-D-A-H-O
IDAHO, IDAHO GO, GO, GO!

Also thought of another one for the real U of A (Arkansas) :p It's sung by the players to the fans in the stadium after every home win:

Hit that line! Hit that line! Keep on going,
Move that ball right down the field!
Give a cheer. Rah! Rah! Never fear. Rah! Rah!
Arkansas will never yield!
On your toes, Razorbacks, to the finish,
Carry on with all your might!
For it's A-R-K-A-N-S-A-S for Arkansas!
Fight! Fight! Fi-i-i-ght

I love my alma mater, but it's the dumbest fight song ever.

A great tradition now gone in the Mid American Conference was called "Migration." On a given football weekend, everyone from Ohio U. would go to Miami of Ohio and on another weekend, Kent State would come to Athens. There would be one home and one away migration for each of four schools each year.

(To the best of my knowledge, migration didn't go away simply because every time someone else came to O.U., there was a riot...literally)

One year, we were at Bowling Green and we decided to "amend" one of their cheers:

They would scream B-G-S-U...

and we would amend, C-K-S.

A couple of friends from Ohio State and I were doing that in a bar in BG the night before a game. We did make it out alive. Barely.

Another one that popped up when arch rival Miami came to town was "Muck Fiami." Don't know who was first, but at about the same time Ohio State was saying "Muck Fichigan."

SuperSister 09-08-2003 10:25 PM

Clarion doesn't have any interesting fight songs or chants due to the fact that our team never wins. As someone who often sat with the band I can can however share some memorable band songs or cheers.

First and Ten: perhaps a personal favorite until it was banned by the administration . . . Doc thought it was funny: FIRST AND TEN, LOSIN AGAIN, LET'S DRINK BEER!

The Dirty Christmas Songs: brought to us by the percussion and brass sections. The words in lowercase are not sung but hummed and the words in uppercase are shouted as loudly as possible.

O COME all ye faithful, joyful and triumpant, O COME ye, O COME ye to bethlehem; COME and beHOLD HIM, born the king of angels; O COME let us adore him, O COME let us adore him, O COME let us adore him, christ, the lord.

the first nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as THEY LAY; in fields as THEY LAY, keeping THEIR SHEEP, on a cold winter's night that was SO DEEP

The Bricklayer Song : also brought to us by percussion and brass
Oh, My father is a bricklayer, he lays bricks
Oh, My brother is a bricklayer, he lays bricks
Oh, my sister is a bricklayer, she lays (insert name of person screamed loudly).

There is the always classic Beer Polka as well as the most often repeated chant:

GO THAT WAY! (screamed while standing up and pointing to the correct end zone)

If I missed any Ali let me know!

I forgot one chant we used for IUP:

One little two little three little indians, four little five little six little indians, seven little eight little nine little indians, THEY ALL DIED! (this was before the mascott change)

"Ring Out Ahoya!"

Ring out Ahoya with an M.U.Rah Rah,
M.U.Rah Rah, M.U.Rah Rah Rah Rah Rah
Ring out Ahoya with an M.U. Rah, Rah,
M.U. Rah Rah for Old Marquette. Rah! Rah! Rah!

How about Oklahoma's fight song:

You sing "Boomer Sooner" 7 times, and then OKU.

Then you sing, "Oklahoma" 7 times, and then OKU.

There there's a chant that actually has words --- so I'll skip it.

(Yes, my son goes to Oklahoma)

Glorious reflections of a misspent pledgeship: :)

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner,
Boomer Sooner, OK-U!
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, OK-U!
I'm Sooner born and Sooner bred,
and when I die I'll be Sooner dead!
Rah! Oklahoma! Rah! Oklahoma! Rah! Oklahoma...OK-U!

And the alma mater (called the OU chant), sung at the end of all football games:

O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A!
Our chant rolls on and on...
Thousands strong sing heart and soul
in Alma Mater's praise!
Oh campus beautiful by day and night,
of colors proudly gleaming red and white!
'Neath a western sky, OU's chant will never die...
Live on, University!

* P.S. The official colors are crimson and cream, but red and white rhyned better with the chant.

Ahh good times...

My school does that too. We have a student section called The Tigers Lair and they do all that fun stuff, it does look pretty cool.

We don't really have any funny cheers here, and the only cheer I can even really think of is this one:

Hit it! Hurray, hurrah! Mizzou! Mizzou!
Hurray, hurrah! Mizzou! Mizzou!
Hurray, Hurrah! And a bully for old Mizzou! Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah!
Mizzou-Rah! Mizzou-Rah! Mizzou-Rah! Tigers!

Pretty boring. Of course we do the thing where the student side of the stadium screams out M-I-Z and the other side yells back Z-O-U. Sounds really cool

My friend and former director of the Ohio University Band, Gene Thrailkill, just retired a couple of years ago as director of the Pride of Oklahoma (So, he directed two great O.U. bands). I wonder how many times he heard that song over his thirty years in Norman.

It was fun watching the Pride marching and playing thru College Corner last year prior to the Colorado game on parents weekend.
