Recruitment Results Fall 2003

Wow, it seems like we Alpha Xi Deltas have been quiet on here lately, or is it just me?? Anyhow, happy Fall to all, and welcome back!! I have some early recruitment results:

Rho at Univ. of Nebraska - Lincoln
Quota 42
AXD Pledged 44

Alpha Kappa at Kansas St. Univ.
Quota 43
AXD Pledged 43

Sigma at the Univ. of Iowa
Quota 35
AXD Pledged 11
(This sounds small, but this is the best this chapter has done in years and we should be so proud of them!!! They are definitely on the move back up.)

Gamma Eta at Georgia Tech
Quota 34
AXD Pledged 34

Zeta Xi at Auburn Univ.
Quota 55
AXD Pledged - matched 38, 24 accepted
(Note here: Our Auburn women decided before recruitment this year -- pretty bravely, I think -- to be very, very selective, particularly in terms of grades, and ended up cross-preffing only the "top" houses ('though I hate using that term). This is a tough result for them in terms of numbers, but the right thing for Zeta Xi as a chapter. The women they pledged are all absolutely top-notch, bar none. And of course they're continuing to COB, but with those same high standards in mind.)

Theta Sigma at Univ. of Central Florida
Quota 69
AXD Pledged 69

Has anyone heard anything else?

I don't have anything to add as far as New Members, I just wanted to say thanks for sharing the info.

Zeta Xi

I just wanted to echo what SoProud said about Zeta Xi. As an alumna (very scary) of this chapter I was there helping with recruitment and it was very hard on bid day but our new members are wonderful. I also have been told that these girls so far have at least ten new member swaps, so yeah for them! I love and admire my sisters for choosing to show the rest of the chapters on our campus that we are not afraid to say no to girls that we don't feel exemplify our spirit and would not be an asset to the chapter.

AlphaXiGirl 09-08-2003 09:42 AM

Georgia State

Hot off the presses at Georgia State:

Quota was 15 and we got it!!!! Three chapters received quota, one chapter received quota plus 1 and one chapter did not receive quota.

:)
Congratulations to all of our wonderful chapters!
It sounds like things are going very well so far this year!
I can't wait to hear from the rest of the country!

FuzzieAlum 09-09-2003 06:55 PM

What are new member swaps?

AlphaXiGal 09-11-2003 05:24 PM

Zeta Omega at West Georgia

West GA had another very successful recruitment. We pledged quota plus last year (first time ever in our existence).

We pledged 20 this year (quota was 21). We are now the 2nd largest chapter on campus with 65 members (8 over campus total).

rocketaxid 09-12-2003 09:38 AM

University of Toledo

quota was 6

we matched 5

4 signed

because of low number across the boards, obviously with quota only being six, our formal recruitment will no longer be before school starts.

We love all of our new girls its just a unamious panhel wide that quota only being six is not worth formal recruitment so next year it will be a couple of weeks into the school year.

Pledge swaps, if you will (only we're not supposed to call them pledges anymore). I'm so jealous--we only had 4, and I only got to go to one.

I've heard from the AXiD community on LiveJournal.com that we tend to be trending low nationally. Nobody's really sure why. But I figure that by getting more girls that want to be Alpha Xi's than getting girls to match quota will really help foster a deep love for AXiD and turn us into an even stronger group. So here's to all our new members nationwide!

Sorry to barge into your forum, but at my school Alpha Xi Delta (Theta Iota Chapter) was the only sorority on campus to get quota AND they are the first to get TOTAL!!! Congrats to them and all of their hard work!

(BTW, Florida Atlantic University doesnt have a big greek system so thats really really great for them to do that!)

tfj-1893 09-19-2003 08:07 AM

Hi Ladies!
I just saw the comment about a "downward" trend for Alpha Xi Delta. I've seen the numbers from across the country & definately don't see that trend! In fact, I've seen an upward trend - especially for some chapters who have had troubles in the past!
Just wanted to give you an update!

Thank you so much for the kind words... I love your PH spirit!

As for the downward trend thing... I don't see that at all. I have been so impressed by the success of our chapters in recruitment. Across the entire country, we've done well and for the chapters that didn't do as well as they would like, they are getting help from their AF, Specialists, and their AED. If anyone wants to see the numbers or doubts that we are growing and strong, take a look at Jane Sutton's state of the fraternity address from convention. http://www.alphaxidelta.org/convention.asp

Wow, it's really exciting that to hear that everyone is having a great recruitment! My chapter received quota through formal recruitment-- and we also picked up 9 more wonderful new members throught COB. We are really excited and nervous about having a new member class of 17!

So what are pledge/new member swaps? We didn't have anything like that at my chapter.

AXiDBelle 09-22-2003 09:23 PM

Just thought the board would like to know that our Culver Stockton colony pledged 40! Amazing for a college of only 800! I think things are headed upwards nationally too!

There's a Culver-Stockton alumna in our Alumnae Association and
she was told that there were three Alpha Xi legacies included in the 40 Beta Nu colony members. Way to go ladies... keep up the good work!!

Basically, it's a social involving only the new members of ABC sorority and XYZ fraternity. They have themes; some of ours are things like Wet N' Wild, where everyone brings water guns and water balloons, or Dirty Twister, where a Twister mat is laid out with ketchup, mustard, etc. for the corresponding colors. It's just something we do to help new members of the Greek community get to know other new members.

FuzzieAlum 09-24-2003 10:15 PM

Nu chapter at the U of Washington got 17 girls and quota was 26, and they were really excited about the girls they got, I hear.

Thanks for the explanation of swaps. At my school, quota was never more than 14, so a swap would be kind of small, and anyway our formal rush was spring, while the fraternity's big rush was in fall. So it wouldn't have been something we'd do!

PrincessHeather 09-27-2003 02:14 AM

Sorry to crash...But I have good news!

I just wanted to share with all of you that your Iota Beta Chapter at California State Univ. Stanislaus got 9 new members. Quota was a 11 and they did a really good job! The women they got will be such a great asset to their chapter!!

Your chapter and my chapter are the only nationals on campus and this is the closest they have ever gotten to receiving quota so YEA! for them. Iota Beta has done a complete turnaround from when I rushed in the fall of 2000 (they only had 5 members; our campus total was 40) Its great to now see both the Nationals excelling on our campus and they totally deserve a big fat Congrats! They will be COBing starting next week and I wish them luck.

Greek love
Heather

Sorry to crash. I have an Alpha Xi question.

My cousin is a member of Alpha Xi at a very LARGE school in a very LARGE state. She is full of Alpha Xi pride (and so is my family because of her affiliation) but she was very upset that they did not do that well this year in formal recruitment (single digit) and is afraid that they might close down her chapter. BUT, she also said their chapter won national awards at AXiD convention AND won the chapter excellence award from their campus panhellenic last year and that the girls are really great but they feel they will never catch up. What kind of an impact does this rush have on them in terms of what the national organization is thinking? Does anyone know if their chapter in danger of closing? What can they do to recover?

I don't think that anyone on this board is in a position to say what will or will not happen. I think I have a good idea which chapter you are speaking about and, if I am correct, I'll go out on a limb and say that they need to do what they have done for years - COB.

How a chapter does during formal recruitment isn't going to determine a chapter's fate.... it's what they do after formal recruitment that matters.... are the members willing to put the work into finding and pledging good quality women through COB? If so, I'd venture to say that they will be okay.

The chapter also needs to take a good, hard look at their formal recruitment for this year and determine what they need to do differently next year. They need to ask for help from their AF and their recruitment specialist. There are TONS of resources available to chapters - they need to use them.

I agree with this! She basically said that they were really trying to be more selective this year and ended up releasing many girls that probably would have increased their numbers. But at her campus it is just as bad to take a full pledge class of duds as it is to end up with a small pledge class. In fact, it can be WORSE!

She is mostly upset because she is in a position of leadership and a lot of the members were blaming them on bid day for gambling their numbers away. In other words, the chapter thought they were being too picky by not inviting back some girls. From what I gathered from our conversation, it sounded like they were trying to rush above their level (that sounds bad, but you know what I mean, rushing stronger girls than they normally do) and it backfired. I know they are really great at COB because she gave me like their old statistics and stuff, but the chapter morale is low coming off of this and I just feel badly for her because it's hard to get the troops to rally when their in a funk.

Anyway, I didn't think anyone would have an answer, but I was hoping to offer her some encouragement. As you can imagine, she's a little embarrassed and doesn't really want to reach out for help to explain. If you know the chapter, they probably need a little pick-me-up from nationals right now. Their chapter is one of the old-timers and I know that the national organization would want to help! :)

gottabegreek 10-03-2003 11:12 PM

Just because a chapter doesn't do well during one formal recruitment does not mean that our National Fraternity will be knocking at the door to close them down.

The comment that was made earlier about COBing is right. If these girls can go out and COB a great new member class, then they have nothing to worry about!

Morale is very important, especially when a chapter is small and the new member class is smaller than other sororities on campus. It is important that the President, Executive Board and upperclassmen try to encourage the younger members that the chapter and remind them that they can recover from this.

I would recommend to this chapter not to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If they walk around with the attitude that they are not going to be able to pick up girls and that they are going to close, that's what is going to happen to them.

Our National Fraternity cares deeply about each of our chapters and is not about to let one bad year stand in the way of this chapter's future.

I'm @ the Theta Sigma chapter @ UCF and i saw our quota was already post but we did amazing. We've worked really really hard being we've only been on since '95 and we're currently the largest chapter out of the 10 here.

Dolphingirl14 10-09-2003 02:18 AM

Hey, I'm the New Member Educator of The Epsilon Lambda chapter at Rider University. We just had our Bid Day on October 3rd. Our quota was 15 and we got 10 girls. We are still COBing though! :D Whish us luck!

TFJ,
Rukiya

The Delta Rho chapter at California State University, Northridge in Los Angeles got 35 girls (I'm one of them!). We were initiated last weekend and it feels so good to be wearing these awesome letters. :-)

quillogold 11-08-2003 11:05 PM

We got 69 wonderful new members at the Theta Sigma chapter and I believe we initiated 63 of them. We love our new girls!
