OCTOBER IS....

NOT ONLY MY BIRTHDAY MONTH,BUT SERIOUSLY....

NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

SORORS AND SISTERFRIENDS...

PLEASE CHECK YOURSELVES AND REMIND YOUR LOVED ONES TO CHECK THEMSELVES FOR LUMPS.

WE ARE NEVER TOO YOUNG TO HAVE LUMPS....I HAVE A COLLEAGUE WHO HAD A DOUBLE MASECTOMY A FEW YEARS AGO AND SHE WAS ONLY IN HER LATE 20'S.

CHECK, CHECK, AND RECHECK...EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY!

I GUESS YOU ALL CAN TELL I WATCH ALOT OF LIFETIME...TELEVISION FOR WOMEN! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Good evening sorors and sisterfriends.

Thanks for the message AKA2D'91. I'm sure that this horrible disease has affected many of our families, if not some of us personally on this board. My mother has had a double mastectomy and an aunt a lumpectomy...so at the tender age of 32, I've already had two mammograms. Early detection is definitely the key!

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Unfortunately, domestic violence has also affected many of our families, if not some of us personally on this board. Again, I have an aunt and a cousin who have suffered at the hands of insecure and downright cruel men! If only everyone could truly appreciate that "hands are for helping, not for hurting"...

Cultured Pearl 10-09-2000 10:38 PM

P.S. Happy Birthday, Soror! October is also my Mom's birthday month...and she's a soror, too!

Kudos for reminding us that October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You are so right! Domestic violence affects all sorts of people from all walks of life. And it is not just a male-against-female act. I cannot stress this enough! Women abuse women, and men abuse men. Domestic violence is one of the issues I am most passionate about! It is saddening, frustrating, maddening to know just how common abuse is.

Peace Love and Progression

Hello Ladies,
Interesting that you all should mention that it is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Domestic Violence Awareness month. This past Saturday, my sorority and I volunteered at a Domestic Violence shelter called SafeHouse. We helped do some chores around the house as well as do some painting in a few of the rooms. We learned about the house and the things they provide for the women and men that come there. It made me feel sad that this happens to women and men. But at the same time, I was very glad that the women and men that were there, got to the house before something extremely terrible happened to them.
Also, my sorority and I attended a Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Ball the same evening. Of course, all proceeds went towards the research of finding a cure for breast cancer. It was a great event and I was so happy to see soooo many people attend http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Just thought I'd share my weekend since it was related to the topic http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Before I go: Happy (early) Birthday AKAD '91 http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif God Bless You!

I, not my Soror, am a member of the DYO Club. And I'm getting older.... :D :p

Plus the breast cancer awareness month is hitting me because I'm approaching the age where breast care becomes an issue.

But in all seriousness, I agree with you guys wholeheartedly about getting your screenings. This issue along with others need to be a concern for all of us.

Let's all strive to keep ourselves healthy;)

First of all Happy B-Day to Everyone!

My grandmother went on to glory - you know that's how we say it in the south - as a result of breast cancer. I loved the lady with all and I do mean all my heart! I encourage the Brothers to encourage their wives, girlfriends, sisters and anyone else to have a screening.

as a sister, let me encourage my brothers to also have a screening. although men don't physically suffer from breast cancer, nearly as much as women, it is still possible for them to be correctly diagnosed w/breast cancer.

Yes Richard Roundtree of Shaft fame and Hardy Lester on Soul Food the Series;) which won't be on again until January http://www.plauder-smilies.de/cry.gif had breast cancer.

jihad1906 10-03-2001 08:57 PM

happy birthday to all those born in Oct.
happry birthday AKA2D
happy birthday to ME

breast cancer is a very important subject, and one that has hit close to home for my self ( Grand mother died because of it as well as brain cancer) Cancer is a b..ch. , but ladies need to tell the men in their lives that they need to get checked for testicular cancer also, same drill after showers/baths roll your family jewels around in your hand feel for any unusual lump and get it checked out. the left testis should have a small nodule in it but other than that, it should be smooth

our bodies are a gift from God, so lets take care of them

AKA2D '91 10-03-2001 09:02 PM

Men with Breast Cancer

Thanks everyone!

Montell Williams revealed that he, too had breast cancer.

Men get checked!

ClassyLady 10-03-2001 10:35 PM

My grandmother had a masectomy and my mother recently had to have a minor, invasive procedure. This disease has hit very close to home for me. I wasn't very good about checking myself, but my doctor let me know that, with my family history, it needs to be done. So, I've gotten a lot better about it.

And one another note:

Women's health is EXTEMELY important. To all of the beautiful, black women out there: please take care of yourselves. Get your yearly exams and do the checks monthly. I say this because one of my close friends may have cervical cancer. She is in her early twenties, never had an STD and in good health. But, she detected the abnormality early enough to do something about it.
