My Rush Story...

Hey Everyone!
Im so glad that i was refered to this place by Jill1228 (i cannot thank you enough).

I go to the University of Montevallo (a small school of about 3000 students), and the sororities there are (there are roughly about 100 girls rushing):

*Alpha Delta Pi
*Alpha Gamma Delta
*Chi Omega
*Delta Gamma
*Phi Mu

I am so very nervous about going through with recruitment in 2 days (starts on Thursday). I have always wanted to rush, but i went to a Community College for the first 2 years of my college life, and as we all know, there are no sororities/fraternities there). Then i transfered to a big Uni. and i hated it. Then i made my way to UM Fall 2002. I wanted to rush then, but i just wasnt ready... so now im worried that i might have 2 things against me:
1. I am a Junior
2. I am Married

I might have some doubt, but im trying to stay optomistic since i know some juniors have rushed and gotten bids and even one married girl that i know of.

Anyway, tonight we have our last meeting before rush, kind of an orientation type thing.

Thanks for listening!

Ive got a question i forgot to post earlier...

Is it common at most schools for Freshmen and Sophomores to get higher points than a Junior, or is this just a sorority/school preference?

Kristin AGD 09-02-2003 08:20 PM

Good Luck Juliebug !! :D

polarpi 09-02-2003 09:04 PM

Best of luck juliebug! I don't know about all schools giving more points to freshmen/sophomores....I think it might be a larger issue with larger chapters, but that's just my (underinformed) opinion.....I went to a university with about 3000 undergrads, and there were a number (small, but there) of sophomores and juniors going through recruitment....I was one of them, and it was the best decision I ever made!

Aphigurl 09-02-2003 09:08 PM

Best of luck during rush juliebug!! :)

Thanks everyone... yall are so sweet!

Polarpi - thanks for your input... i was figuring it might be different with larger schools... i just wasnt sure.

Power to the Juniors!! Rock the Rush!!!

Hehehe, anyway on a more serious note. I think my plan of attack to dull the possible "stigma" of being an upperclassman is to emphasize that I know what I am getting into: as in the ways of balancing school and the sorority. I plan on graduating 3 years. And in those 3 years I will definately make the absolute most of my time in the sisterhood because my time is so precious.

Good luck with everything.

Jill1228 09-03-2003 02:06 AM

Julie!
Hey baby! You started your thread while I was at work. Glad you found us here! Cause when you posted on the other board, you didn't get that much positive feed back... :(
I was like Step AWAY from the HATER-ADE!

I think things are very different with smaller schools and schools that don't have a large Greek System.

Make sure you do your homework on each org. When you finish each rush day, sit down for a few minutes and take notes...

As for the rush thread name each house something...avoid using names.

Let me find some threads for you to do homework on!

Jill1228 09-03-2003 02:07 AM

Oh yeah we are a bunch of rush thread hos!
(Tapping arm to find a vein for the next rush thread fix)

Jill1228 09-03-2003 02:08 AM

Erica you are too precious!

Hey girl!
I knew one of our LC's was from there a few years ago- her name is Kelly Barry and I loved her. We wanted to keep her, we even tried to hide things from her so she would have to come back! :) She loved her time in AGD and from what she said about the campus it is a great place and beautiful! I can't wait to hear your story.
Oh, and as for the junior and married thing, I know we had sisters that were married when they pledged and they were TREMENDOUS assets to the sorority!

Ohh, rush threads, why must you be so addictive!?

juliebug 09-03-2003 05:49 PM

I just wanted to make a quick post while i was at the computer... i just cant stay away from message boards ;)

Anyway, last night was fun b/c we got into our recruitment teams, and each one has a member of the Panhellenic council and Exec with you (basically Rho Chi's, but they changed the name this year). Our group is pretty small, has only about 7 girls in it, but everyone is pretty nice. Tonight our group is going out to a mexican restaurant for some bonding and chit chat.

Nothing really exciting going on so far!
Rush starts tomorrow at 720pm!

MeLikey 09-03-2003 07:52 PM

Good luck! My group didn't go out to a restaurant! Sounds fun!

True that, Sarah...when I read Montevallo I immediately thought of Kelly. I met her at the 2001 convention and she was one of the sweetest girls I've ever met.

I know nothing about Greek life at Montevallo and how competitive rush is like over there, but with my chapter [located on a campus where rush is NOT too competitive!], being a junior and being married was not too big of a problem. One of my pledge sisters was both, and she too was such an asset to the chapter...and her husband was too!

Now, I'm not saying that the chapters will simply overlook that, but let them know that you're determined to become a part of a sisterhood, and hopefully they'll realize that too and they'll take action on that!

Best wishes on a fabulous rush for you!

AXWhoah 09-03-2003 09:50 PM

Not to be a downer or anything but I know my chapter has a policy regarding married people that isn't so favorable. I also don't think that we are unique in this regard. If a sister gets married before she is done with school then it means automatic alumnaship, aka she is no longer allowed to be active. Just a heads up in case any of the sororities you may be rushing have a similar policy.

Unregistered- 09-03-2003 09:58 PM

Is this a national rule?

I'm sure it addresses the issue of active married sisters in THE BOOK, but in my chapter, you are not forced to go inactive once you get married while a collegian. You are given THE OPTION to go alum. In Nancy's case, she was already married and was extended a bid. I've seen other sisters marry as juniors or seniors and stayed on until it was time to go into Senior Rededication.

juliebug 09-03-2003 10:35 PM

no no, not a downer at all. When i signed up i made sure that everything will be ok when i rush, and i even asked some members of the Pan council and they said i should have no problem. If there is a problem, then that is just the way things are and im taking that chance.

Jill1228 09-03-2003 10:39 PM

So what is the schedule for rush week?

BGKdLady 09-03-2003 10:53 PM

I'm not sure that KD has any policy against taking married members exactly as long as they can fulfill the obligations of membership, but they do have a policy that a chapter house must remain filled with members and members have an obligation to live there if necessary and no men are allowed in sleeping quarters. On my campus that wouldn't have been a problem, but at some with huge houses, I guess it could be. Good luck with your recruitment!

No, this is not a national rule for Alpha Chi Omega. Chapters may allow married pnm's to join. It is up to the individual chapters to extend an invitation to join or not.

AXWHOAH, Please clean out your pm box!

We actually talked about this one day when I was in school with some girls from other chapters, seems Phi Mu has this rule, and I believe it may be national because my sister in law is a Phi Mu and she said she thought it was a national rule, not a local chapter deal. Dunno- maybe one of them could tell us?!

I THINK that it might be, but I am not 100% sure. We had one of our girls get married last semester and she became an alum. So I don't know if that's personal preference or what. It might be if you have a baby then you have to go alum, I'm not totally sure though!

astroAPhi 09-04-2003 12:20 PM

Julie, I hope you have a wonderful time! Good luck!

GtownGirl98 09-04-2003 01:10 PM

We had something like this...

We had a sister a few years ago who would have been forced at one time to go alum but after speaking with IHQ officials we were told that those rules no longer existed, for either Marriages or Babies... though the option to go alum is offered.

Kristin AGD 09-04-2003 02:57 PM

Good Luck Julie!

FYI, One of my pledge sisters was married and I think she was 25 when we were pledges. She is a great member. Not just while we were in school, but continously (since 1995 :D ) . I hope the groups at your school can appreciate what an asset you can be to their orgs!

pinkyphimu 09-04-2003 09:23 PM

phi mu does not have this rule.

good luck with your recruitment!!

honeychile 09-04-2003 09:28 PM

Juliebug, I called our EO to ask if we had a "no married women" rule, since there had been one in my chapter when I was an active.

Alpha Delta Pi had no policy against married women, but an individual chapter may take your marital status into consideration (realizing that your husband & family must come first).

So - it will be all the more interesting to see how Recruitment goes for you! Good luck!

ajuhdg 09-04-2003 09:54 PM

Yeah, I think that'll be the biggest thing...chapter preferences! I wish that our organizations would remember that women's educational situations are not what they were in the late 1800's when most of our GLO's were formed! You know, older students at the very least! Just my thoughts...

I'm also surprised that organizations don't realize that older students are more and more common. In my state, high schools basically have four tracks - one for college, one for two-year college/transfer, one for vocational, and one for special needs populations. Many students are unable to get into/maintain the college track, and are then sent to the two-year programs. They encourage students to attend the community college for two years, then transfer to a university setting as a junior. I'm seeing more and more parents and students buy into this system due to the rising costs of four year colleges.

AUDeltaGam 09-04-2003 11:59 PM

Have a great time with recruitment! One of my sorority sister's mom joined Alpha Delta Pi at Montevallo and LOVED it!!

GOOD LUCK!!!
