Did your HS friend go Greek?

I went to a VERY liberal Performing Arts school from 4th grade up until I graduated. All my close friends either went JC or to colleges where Greek Life is small and/or the school is antigreek. I had a friend go Pi Kapp at CSUN and a friend went KA at UCR, but they both dropped out of college. Here at my school, a friend of mine from HS went into a wonderful multicultural sorority (Upsilon Kappa Delta, we're paired up with them for Greek Week) and a girl I knew in HS went Theta (also our GW partners :D ) but as far as I know she doesn't go here any more.

With all that, most of the people I'm still in contact with say two things: 1) They never thought I'd join a fraternity, 2) they always want to know what Greek life is like. It sucks sometimes telling them that what they see on MTV is bullshit.

So, anyway, you ever find out any of your friends from HS went Greek?

KSigkid 08-31-2003 02:18 AM

A few of my friends went Greek - quite a few ended up playing college sports, and did that instead of Greek Life. A few ended up in the Greek system though, my best friend included as he ended up a Lambda Chi.

Buttonz 08-31-2003 02:23 AM

So far I am the only on out of my HS friends to go greek....but one of my best friends was thinking about it but decided against it *maybe I can still chage his mind?* and one of my other friends is thinking about going AEPi, maybe as early as this fall. One of my best freinds from the year above me went SDT but dropped a few weeks in *it was too much for her because of school*. I am also hoping to drag a freind to an informal COB event...she has mentioned to me that if she was at an away school she would go greek but not at a commuter school...I'm trying to get her to change her mind! Everyone was shocked that I went greek.

TigerLilly 08-31-2003 02:25 AM

I recently found out that my co-salutatorian from my high school joined Phi Sigma Pi (my coed honor fraternity) at her college, which is cool because now we're brothers! Still haven't seen her at any interchapter events, but it'll be fun when I do!
As for anyone else, I don't know of anyone from my graduating class who went greek. I can imagine some of them would have, but I don't keep in contact with them. None of my friends who I keep in contact with think they're the greek "type", and they were all surprised that I joined a sorority -- I'm constantly having to explain away their stereotypes of greek life. But hey, they're learning that sororities aren't those horrid things they'd always imagined them to be, so I don't really mind.

IowaHawkeye 08-31-2003 02:34 AM

All of my friends pegged me as the Greek type (if there is one!) while we were still in high school. I was and always have been very active on campus and in the comunity - and that's the greek community in a nut shell!

About 20 of my high school friends came to Iowa with me - but only 3 others went greek! (2 Kappa Sigmas and 1 Gamma Phi Beta) All of us still talk and hang out quite a alot - so it's great :)

I have friends in DG, AGD, PiPhi, AXO, ATO, and SX at U of Illinois.

2 Friends in APhi at Easern Illinois.

Friends in Kappa and DG at Purdue.

Friends in APhi, FIJI at Indiana

A friend in Sigma Kappa and Chi Omega at Western Michigan

Another Chi O friend at U of Michigan and U of Colorado.

I know there's more :) But needless to say - I have lots of greek AND non-greek friends! And I love them all the same!

PSK480 08-31-2003 04:01 AM

one of my best friends in high school when Theta Chi at Allegehny, and the rest either I don't know, haven't gone to college yet, or haven't gone greek.

Senusret I 08-31-2003 05:35 AM

Let's see.....

One of my good friends became an AKA two years before I became an Alpha....we were already close, but now our bond is even tighter.

Her ex-boyfriend, who was my classmate, became a KAPsi.

Another good friend, who went overseas with me once, pledged Sigma Gamma Rho at Lane College.

Our class valedictorian pledged Alpha Sigma Phi at Cornell....I sent him a gray shirt with red letters when I found out he pledged.

Two girls who graduated before me became Zeta Phi Betas (Virginia Union and Hampton), and a girl before her pledged Delta Sigma Theta at Hampton. We were all in JROTC together.

I could go on and on....we were a very greek oriented high school. It wasn't a matter of "if".....but "when".

aephi alum 08-31-2003 08:56 AM

Out of the group I hung out with in high school, I only know of one other who went greek. He joined a fraternity at Dartmouth, I'm blanking on which one. One of his brothers was a coworker of mine.

A lot of people were surprised that I went greek... someone actually said they'd thought I was too level-headed to go in for something like that

OUlioness01 08-31-2003 09:11 AM

in my graduating class I know we have:
2 Sig Ep (both at OU)
2 ATO (both at UC)
1 Phi Delt (UC)
1 Delt (Ohio Weslyan)
1 Delta Chi (Colorado State)
1 Beta (OU)
1 Phi Mu Alpha (Northwestern)
one guy at an undislosed fraternity at Bama

4 or 5 KDs (UC, Miami of Ohio, Texas A&M)
4 or 5 Kappas (UCSB, UC, BGSU)
2 Phi Mus (OU and Case Western Reserve)
1 ADPi (Miami of Ohio, but now at University of Arizona)
1 Tri-Sigma (Morehead)
1 DG (UK)

these are just the pople that posted on the alumni site....half our class never did.

CrimsonTide4 08-31-2003 09:13 AM

I just came from my 10 year reunion. . .

I have friends who are SORORS DSQ
WYF
KAY
AKA
AFA
SGR
ZFB

AchtungBaby80 08-31-2003 10:33 AM

I knew some people in high school who went Greek--actually, there were quite a lot of them, but I wasn't really friends with them. Only two of my high school friends are Greek now...the rest either weren't interested or didn't go to college.

KillarneyRose 08-31-2003 10:34 AM

Out of my "core group" of best friends in high school (there were 8 of us), six of us went Greek:

DZ at Pitt (that's me! :) )
DG at Maryland
Tri-Delt at Miami of Ohio
XO at Kent State
ADII at UNC Chapel Hill
APhi at Kent State

ZTAngel 08-31-2003 10:35 AM

Practically my whole graduating class went Greek. I would list all the places they went but there's way too many. It was a huge thing at my high school to go greek. Ever since my junior year high school, admittedly, I knew the reputations of all the chapters at the 3 big state schools (UCF, FSU, UF). Younger siblings will walk around in their older siblings' bid day shirts to show off what sorority/fraternity their sibling joined.
Out of my really close friends, here are the stats:
2 DDD at UCF
1 KD at UCF
3 SFE 2 at UCF, 1 at FSU
2 SAE 1 at UCF, 1 at UPenn
1 DFE at UF
1 AEF at UF
1 TEF at UF
1 KA at West Florida
1 CW at UF
2 ZTA at UCF

And, of course, I'm a ZTA. :D

Lil' Hannah 08-31-2003 10:42 AM

I had 6 best friends in HS, 2 girls and 4 guys. One went DPhiE, one ChiO, one DU, and the 3 other guys did not go Greek.

Optimist Prime 08-31-2003 10:43 AM

two tri sigs here, agd, that I know of. I'm not really tight with that many people from hs. Just wasn't a friend making expeirence.

ASUADPi 08-31-2003 01:34 PM

None of my close friends in high school went greek, in fact out of all my close friends in high school I'm the only one who A) went Greek and B) actually graduated with my BA/BS. But from my high school alone and people I knew, quite a few went greek.

(all these number are approximate, there are probably more but I'm just thinking of people that I know)

7 went ADPi (woo hoo)
1 went A Chi O
4 went Chi O
1 went Alpha Phi
1 went Theta
1 went DG
3 went Kappa
2-3 went Gamma Phi
1 went A G D
1 went Sigma Kappa (but later had to depledge due to money issues)

Unfotunately I don't know of any guys going Frat wise, I'm sure some did. I probably won't find out until my 10 reunion.

Brianna
Alpha Delta Pi

AOII_LB93 08-31-2003 01:37 PM

Well of people that I would actually consider friends, only one went greek, and she joined AOII because I dragged her to my chapter for COB events when I saw her on campus. Others that I know of as acquaintances did but not many

Kinda funny as a matter of fact, three girls were so inseperable and still are, all went DG. (UCLA and LMU)

1 guy went Delta Sigma Phi at Cal Poly SLO.

1 girl went ADPi at UCLA.

The rest, I don't know...but might see in a month at our 10 year reunion and will find out then.

AOcutiePi4ever 08-31-2003 01:41 PM

4 went AOII
3 went DZ
1 went Zeta
1 went Pi Phi
1 went Phi Mu
1 went KD
1 went DG

and as for boys, I know we have a few Theta Chi's and the rest scattered all over, I can't keep track of where.

AUDeltaGam 08-31-2003 01:48 PM

From my high school class, I know people that went:

AXO
ADPi
AOII
DZ
Tri Sigma
DTD
AZD
SK
Pi Phi
Phi Mu
SDT

That's all, I think!
:)

breathesgelatin 08-31-2003 02:18 PM

Of my friends from high school, one is a Tri-Sig, one is a DZ, one is a Chi-O, and two are SigKaps.

hannahgirl 08-31-2003 02:25 PM

I don't know about a lot of people in high school especially since I had a large graduating class that spread out a lot when we all went to college, but here it goes.

Out of my class (that I know of):

AXO
DG
A-Phi
KKG
AZD (later depledged)
KAT

PKT
LXA
TKE
Sigma Nu (current president actually)

Thats all I can think of right now....I'm waiting until my 5 year to see what else I can come up with. ;)

AOIIalum 08-31-2003 02:32 PM

AFAIK, none of my close high school friends joined a sorority, but some classmates did join at various schools (I went to an all-girl HS):

2 AOIIs (one had to depledge due to family illness, and ME!)
1 Chi O
1 Gamma Phi Beta
1 Pi Phi

Weirdly enough, many more girls went greek from my grade school. I think there were 5-6 of us who were eventual AOIIs at about 4 different schools!

AEPhiSierra 08-31-2003 02:39 PM

Well of my close high school friends that I keep in touch with none went greek and they were all very suprised when I went Greek. And even outside of that circle though I haven't really heard of that many people going greek the ones i have heard about went Sigma Kappa, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sammy, and AEPi. I think its because I went to a very liberal and very academicly competitive HS in NYC and a lot of people from my hs probably think they're too smart for greek life or that greeks are too elitist. Off course they're wrong but its sometime very hard to knock down peoples misconceptions.

Good bros. Met them at Convention. One of our strongest chapters out west.

TriDeltaGal 08-31-2003 02:57 PM

Lets see...My high school friends or aquintances went:

4 Tridelts (including me!)
2 DZ
1 DG
1 Theta
2 Alpha Phis
1 ADPi
2 Chi-O
1 Pi Phi
2 AXO

2 Sig Eps
1 Theta Chi
1 TKE
1 Delta Sig
1 Beta

Okay, this is all I could think of off the top of my head but I' sure there is more. It's kind of weird because it seemed like in my class there was an explosion of grads who joined a greek organization.

FAB*SpiceySpice 08-31-2003 03:15 PM

Well let me think. My two best friends since the 2nd grade, both of them became greek. One is a tri Delt at the U of AZ and the other is a DZ in Nebraska. Most girls from my graduating class ended up as Sigma Kappa's at UNO. Another good friend became an AChiO at ASU and the other is a Gamma Phi at UNL. As far as guys go most of my high school guy friends are either Sigma Chi's or Delts at UNL or Sig Ep's and Pikes in Omaha. My very best guy friend is a Beta Theta Pi at the U of Iowa too. Weird, now that I think about it I can't think of really any of my HS friends that didn't become greek, craziness! :)

sugar and spice 08-31-2003 04:43 PM

Most of my high school graduating class didn't consider themselves to be "the Greek type." A lot of them also went to schools with no Greek system or very small or unrecognized Greek systems, so it's not really surprising.

One of my friends is now a DG, and I know two Beta Theta Pis at different schools (Lawrence University and University of Washington-St. Louis).

astroAPhi 08-31-2003 06:23 PM

My best friend rushed at FSU her sophomore year, but didn't get invited back to Kappa Alpha Theta so she dropped. She still had several excellent houses but I don't think she felt like she fit in. I told her to consider AI (with Alpha Phi!).

Several girls who hung out with my best friend but not me actually went Alpha Phi at UIUC and Northern IL. We couldn't believe it when we ran into each other and found out we were sisters!

A friend at Butler went AXO, and an ex at UIUC went Phi Kappa Sigma but never got initiated (grades). And a girl I met at UIUC though other friends became Prez of SAI. I was so proud of her!

I'm sure I'll find out at a reunion about more.

TheCuterHooter 08-31-2003 06:37 PM

My friends always thought I'd go Greek, but they were shocked that I didn't my Freshman year, but I did the year after.

We had a group of ten best friends and we called ourselves the Ten Hot Lesbians(don't ask) and of the ten of us, I went Chi-O, one went Lambda Kappa Sigma(a pharm sorority), another is a Sigma Kappa in UCSD, two joined service frats, I know one is in APhiO in UCLA, and the other is one I never heard of at UCR. The half that didn't go Greek are either thinking about it or totally against it...I guess stereotypes are hard to get past even when your friends disprove them...go fig.

Just about everyone else I knew from my high school went Greek too.

*muah*:)

KDbutterfly 08-31-2003 07:20 PM

At my high school, rarely anyone even went to a University. Most chose to go to a junior college down the road. The only people I knew before college that went greek was a girl who went DG at Chapman University in CA, and my cousin recently joined Phi Kappa Psi at San Diego State. My friends from high school definitely don't know what they're missing :D

ZTAMich 08-31-2003 07:29 PM

Only a few...don't keep in touch with many ppl anymore...only recently moved back to the area...

Gals:
Alpha Phi @ Hofstra
AST @ Merrimack
DPhiE @ SUNY Bing

Guys:
Zeta Psi @ Cornell
ZBT @ Emory (but left the chapter)

and I'm the ZTA of the bunch!

DeltAlum 08-31-2003 09:15 PM

To the best of my knowledge, I am the only member of my graduating class of nearly 500 who pledged.

I actually asked the question once on Classmates.com and not no responses at all.

GeekyPenguin 08-31-2003 09:48 PM

I graduated with 450 people so I'm sure there's more than these, and some of these are from the class before mine, but I know we had:

  • DZ
  • SAE
  • PBF
  • FKT
  • SFE
  • TKE
  • ZTA
  • Triangle

The Phi Tau is an old boyfriend of mine who is now president of his chapter, the TKE and I went to the same college...we also have a TON of people in locals at all the state schools.

Rain Man 08-31-2003 09:56 PM

Quite a few of my HS friends went Greek...

I attended an integrated, inner-city high school.

All my HS c/o '91 class officers went greek:

Class President/Valedictorian: Alpha Phi
Class VP/Salutatorian: Alpha Delta Phi (and this was a black guy)
Class Secretary: Alpha Kappa Alpha
Class Treasurer: Delta Sigma Theta

I don't know if anyone else in my senior class went greek, but I doubt it b/c a LOT of my classmates immediately after high school got married (and divorced) and/or had kids, joined the military or the workforce, or attended the local community college part time. Still some went to universities that had no Greek system.

In short, very few of my classmates went the traditional 4-year college route.

However, I know of some classmates outside my graduating class who became greek:

A c/o '89 member became an Alpha Phi Alpha, and a fellow girl in that class who I thought was really fine became an Alpha Angel (ex-auxiliary group of Alpha Phi Alpha)

A c/o '90 member became an Alpha Delta Pi (she was black)

The class president of the c/o '92 pledged AKA at Miami of Ohio
A member of the c/o '93 pledged Kappa Alpha Psi at Wittenburg.

As far as responses I get when they find out I went Greek, they are largely that of an apathetic nature.

Ginger 08-31-2003 09:57 PM

Most of the kids in my high school didn't go to college, but of those that did, I only know of one who went Greek: Kappa Beta Gamma.

Dionysus 08-31-2003 09:58 PM

Ummm majority of my closer friends from high school were nerdy christians, so no, none of them went Greek. My more distant friends, on the other hand, several went Greek...Chi Omega, AKA, ZTA, Delta, DTD are a few that comes to mind.

gphiangel624 08-31-2003 11:18 PM

Not a lot of people that I graduated with even went to college, and I can't think of many people I knew that went Greek, but here's the lowdown:

A longtime friend that graduated before me went Gamma Phi at CSULB (didn't know until my junior year of school though!)

Three guys I knew but weren't close to went KA at UCR

A guy I'd know for YEARS went Beta Theta Pi at UCR

A friend I made senior year of high school through dance (although she went to another school) ended up taking a bid from Gamma Phi the day after I did, and she didn't know I had even rushed! We're still close to this day, both as alums.

Best friend went ADPi at CSUSB

A few acquaintances went AXO at UCR, and another Alpha Phi at CSUSB

A guy I was infatuated with for years went Sig Ep at CSUSB

A friend I'd known since 4th grade but wasn't very close to went Gamma Phi at UCR last year and we graduated together

All I can think of for now...

PSK480-

I went to Allegheny and actually one of my closest sisters practically lives up at the house! I wonder who you know...

Anyways I went to a small private school and I'm certain more of my graduating class went greek than those I know about. Its funny because in my close group of friends we never thought any of us would go greek but we all ended up joining.

I went ADPi
2 friends went Gamma Phi Beta at Union
1 friend a TriDelt at CMU
1 friend Chi Omega
and another one of my friends went greek but I cant remember his GLO...

WhirlwindTNX 09-01-2003 12:07 AM

None of my friends went Greek but a lot of associates did. Like this guy named Avi who actually created his own fraternity at his school called Sigma Alpha Mu (their nickname is Sammie). . .at least that's what I think he said. . .then there is this guy named James who went Delta Tau Delta. . . a girl named Jamie who joined a Jewish sorority on my campuse but I forget the name. . . . And I'm sure there are others but I don't know about them yet.

ONE Luv

33girl 09-01-2003 12:55 AM

Pretty much everyone (that I know of from my era, that is) from my high school who went to Clarion went Greek - 2 Theta Chis, 2 Zetas and a Tri Sig.

My closest high school friends didn't go to college. The only one I can think of in my class was a TKE little sister at I think St Francis. We had a ton of kids go to Penn State, but as far as I know none of them went Greek.
