Ladies, "That Time" Is Almost Here
You talented, caring, bright, and lovely ladies of GC have discussed this before, but just a reminder:
as of Tuesday, September 2 -- NO WHITE SHOES, at least not in areas of the USA (or specific social circles) where "the rule" applies. :) |
I am having a crappy day and you just brightened it with this post. thanks!! :D
|
Don't forget all straw shoes and handbags, as well as linen clothing.
|
I will miss a certain pair of shoes.
|
like hell am i discarding my white strappy shoes. forget it..:)
|
I'm sorry but this rule does not apply to Missouri, where the temp was 111 last week. We usually are in the 80's until October.
When the weather moves into fall, so will I!! |
This rule doesn't apply in California, either. We've got at least 6-8 more weeks of summer weather.

There's a difference between "summer things" and wearing straw, linen, and white shoes.
Its going to be hot down here in Louisiana for a few more months. So I'm not going to stop wearing khaki shorts and black flip flops, etc. I have a white linen dress for my engagement party tomorrow night. When I bought the dress I informed everyone that the party had to be before labor day. I made sure to wear all my linen and white skirts one last time this week. My mama raised me right :) |

My mom raised me right, as well. But in CA, we do not have these social "rules" about white before or after labor day. That said, I personally find white shoes tacky. But that's my thing. ;) |
The white shoes rule applies in Florida.
But the linen thing doesn't. It stays in the 80's here well through October. Too damn hot to wear heavy clothing! |
This is so funny.. bc I def wore white quite a few times this week just for this very reason... haha.. :)
|
LOL
"that time" too funny Goodbye sweet summer... :( |
Ok, fashion-savvy GC'ers...can I sport my white shoes if I will be wearing them in Montego Bay?
|
Screw that. Sandals and flip flops till the snow comes! We don't have that in-between weather in Michigan.
And I'll proudly be wearing my white sandals with my pink sundress on September 17.... during the recruitment :). |
Okay, I have a question because I've never cared for fashion "rules" at all. In areas of the country where the "rule" applies, what actually happens if you wear white shoes after Labor Day? Seriously.

Sorry... one of those moods. |
I'm going away for the weekend tomorrow and I'll be wearing my white shorts one last time tomorrow.

Really, must we get into this again? It's fine if the culture where you live says that white shoes after Labor Day is a no-go, but just because a woman breaks these rules doesn't mean that her mother didn't "raise her right." If someone's mom raised her right, she wouldn't make assumptions on people's upbringings just because they decided not to follow some petty fashion rule that doesn't even exist in some parts of the country anymore. But then, I would never wear white shoes with anything other than a wedding dress, my initiation dress or my white junior prom dress, so it's sort of irrelevant to me. |
Heather, we should wear white shoes to Old North. ;)
Seriously, this thread cracked me up. Is it okay to wear white tennis shoes after Sept. 1st or are those verboten also? |
:D I think the white shoes to Old North is a great idea, and instead of velvet, our dresses should be linen. In February.
I think white tennis shoes are okay, but I wouldn't know for sure. I wonder if we're going to get flamed for this too . . . haha. |

LOL - I just put all my white shorts & skirts away earlier today, since I knew I wouldn't wear them this weekend. I did leave out one pair of white slacks, which I'll wear Sunday night.
|
This white after Labor Day thing,
How long after Labor Day are you not meant to wear white for? Months? What is Labor day historically?
|

As long as the dresses are cute and sweet and precious, we should be okay. |

Wear them! I don't think the fashion police patrol Montego Bay.

okay screw this rule! i just bought a cute new Lilly halter top and it only looks good with white pants... and i fully plan on wearing it for recruitment in the middle of september

I very rarely wear white, outside of t-shirts. I don't like white shoes--before, during or after Labor Day. Some of us need to stop being so judgemental and realize that the REST of the world might not do things the same way as you do. Bah. NYC w/o AC=linen. It might be black linen, but no one's going to stop me from wearing my linen pants. It's hot up in hurrrr....:p |

Come to think of it....I don't even own anything white except my whites for initiation. That isn't until November, but darnit I guess I better inform the Phi Mu national office that we can't wear whites for initiation anymore since it's after Labor Day. They're all properly raised ladies so they should have no problem with this. :D
Ok, I am just being sarcastic, sorry. I guess up here in Missouri and Nebraska no one really cares if you wear white after Labor day. I think if I wore white shoes during the middle of summer even I'd get some weird looks, Missouri is pretty casual and laid back. Oh well. :) But I think my mommy raised me just fine! |
Why do people brag about being Southern?
-Rudey --It's like me bragging about getting crabs. |

I know it is such a trivial thing to worry about but I am going to New Orleans in 1 week and I have this white linen outfit that I want to wear (it is soooooo pretty). I can hear my mother's voice saying-"but dear it is after labor day you cannot wear white or linen", but I have decided to just wear the outfit and I guess if people in N.O. stare at me then so be it! For the record I will not be wearing any white shoes. I can't help but to think about it as it was drilled into my head that white after labor day is a huge no no.
