Greek Teachers?
Did any of y'all have teachers in grade- or high school who were Greek? Did they ever make mention of it?
Out of the blue last night, I started thinking about my sixth grade history teacher. As part of Ancient Cultures, we had to memorize the Greek Alphabet - forwards and backwards. At the time, she mentioned that she was in the oldest sorority. I can't help but wonder if she is an ADPi or the GLO who first used the word "sorority" (brain cramp here!). So, Mrs. Bridges of Louisiana State University, I thank you for saving me from having to learn the Greek Alphabet during my pledge period! I also ran into two different high school teachers while wearing my lavalier. One was a Chi Omega, the other was a Theta Phi Alpha. Mrs. Sauers, the ChiO, was my home room teacher, and sweetly said, "I see you're wearing a lavalier - are you my sister?" and then was disappointed that I wasn't. Did anyone else have similar experiences? |
My second grade teacher was Greek, but I don't recall her ever talking about it in school. I only know, because she is a friend of the family.
|
Honeychile, that would be the lovely Gamma Phi who first used sorority, but if she went to LSU she'd be an ADPi, we've never been at LSU.
My track coach senior year, who also taught special ed, was a Theta Chi. He didn't talk about it too often, but then again, he was coaching female shot putters. He did wear letters to practice/meets occasionally. |
i don't know about any of my teachers, but my high school nurse is an ADPi. i was really close to her in high school (i was her aide for 3 years and a member of the club she advised) so she was excited that i went greek, although a little disappointed i went phi mu when there was an ADPi chapter at my school. She hasn't had any luck with her kids either yet. He oldest daughter joined Alpha Xi last year.

My first exposure to sororities was at the LSU lab preschool, when I was 4. Many of the student teachers had lavalieres, and I thought they were beautiful, even if the letters didn't look like the ones I was learning. I knew that they got the jewelry because they were in a special club, and I'd seen the sorority houses to know that the letters on the front matched those pretty necklaces. One of our student teachers took us to her house with the funny letters on the front, where there were lots of pretty girls who were nice to us. I decided then that I would be in one of those clubs when I was old enough.
My third and fifth grade teachers, whom I both adored, I learned were Kappas after I became one too. |
My 9th grade English teacher is an AKA, I know as she had a license plate frame on her car.:) My cheer adviser is a DZ at the school where I went, but I didn't find that out until I came back for homecoming. I don't know if both are still active in their respective orgs, but I had always wondered after I figured out what the greek system was. I was pretty clueless going in to school as I am the first person in my family to be greek and go to college as well.
|
If I had any greek teachers when I was in school, none of them ever mentioned being greek or had any paraphanelia around their classrooms.
Now, I keep some things from AGD in my classroom. I have a glass from one of our formals next to my computer, holding all my sharpee markers. I also have red, yellow, and green stars on my desk and a squirrel poster near the door. Sometimes when I wear my lavalier, my students will ask me about college and Greek Life. |
I don't recall having any Greek teachers. After I get my Master's and start teaching high school, I'll probably keep some DZ stuff in my room.
|
I *think* that my high school senior English teacher was in a NPHC org... Maybe Delta Sigma Theta?? Anyway, whichever it was, she kicked ass!! :) :) :)
|
I had a great number of teachers who are MY SORORS of DSQ. It is a hoot to run into them at conventions and step with them. :D
I also had teachers who were members of Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Alpha Kappa Alpha. I'm not sure of any other D9 orgs or NPC orgs. |
My seventh grade geography teacher was a member of AKA. I saw it on the front of her car and I though she had a secret identity. (AKA, Also Known As...) I found out from her that it was a sorority that she belonged to and as far as I know that was the only teacher that I had that was open being a member of a GLO. Im sure others were! But she was a really awsome teacher :)

I have two ironies with the Greek teachers in my life. I know that a few of my teachers were in Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma. To my knowledge, none of my teachers were sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho, but I still found the right way to go. :D
I just found out that one of my favorite English teachers is a member of Zeta Phi Beta. When I was in 8th Grade blahblahblah years ago, she never mentioned it at all. I was shocked to learn it after all these years. The funny thing is that she has known that I'm also Greek for at least 1 year, but she's never alluded to Greekdom with me. |
my middle school band teacher is an alpha xi delta, but i never found out until i ran into her one day and she saw me wearing my pledge pin. it was kinda cool cuz i was always close with her when i was in school, and even when i was in high school.

I've never had any teachers who alluded to being Greek, but up here in Madison that's not exactly a surprise.
Since I'm planning on teaching high school, though, I'll definitely mention that I was in a sorority or have some letters around. Hopefully I can encourage some girls who otherwise wouldn't go Greek to join sororities, or write some recs for these girls . . . we'll see. |

There were some at my college but many would not say their org. Don't know why. An English prof I had for three dif. classes was a KKG tho and often made it known. :) Don't know if any of my high of middle school teachers were greek, never heard much mention of it. Oh well...
|
My third grade teacher was a in Delta Sigma Theta, she went to college with my mother who is an AKA, so my mom use to dress me in pink and green all the time! My screen saver in my class has AKA, so I know my students know, sometimes I wear my sorority jacket to school.
|
My high school journalism teacher was an SAE at Drake. I went back to my h.s. at Thanksgiving break, wearing my pledge pin, and he said he'd never heard of AGD (which does not have a chapter at Drake).

I am about to become a greek teacher, this is my internship year! But I shy away from mentioning my affiliation while at school...I worry that the negative connotation associated with greek life may concern the administration, I am afraid they may think I am a raging alcoholic or something...I live in a very rural, conservative area:rolleyes:. However, my cooperating teacher from my field placement last year was part of an african-american sorority when she was in college, and one of my professors is a sorority girl as well, though I forget which. Oh and I just remembered, my high school spanish teacher was a ZTA.
|
Well, I am a greek teacher :)
My piano professor who was also one of my music ed professors is a DZ from Alabama. She is quite old. I think she is about 80! It was fun to have a professor (and an OLD one at that) call me her sister in class! I think she is just great! Going to school in TX, I am sure that more of my teachers are greek, but I was unaware/young/uninterested at the time. One of the teachers at the school where I student taught year before last is a ZTA and one of the Early Childhood profs in the school of Education at UH is a young DZ (like early '30's. I hear she uses pink and green transparencies...EVERYONE knows she is a DZ. |
One of my college professors from when I was an undergrad is an Alpha Gamma Delta. She brought one of her formal pictures from her college days into class one day. She looked so cute! :)
|
I had teachers who were in AKA, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, & Pi Kappa Alpha. My guidance counselor was a DG and my Activities Director was a KKG - both wrote recs for me.
When I was a teacher, I rarely brought in any Greek stuff, mostly because I didn't have any stuff to bring in. If I did, I'd get asked "What's K Triangle?" |
well, in school, i never knew if any of my teachers were greek. i am, however, a greek teacher. i really don't bring anything phi mu related to work and i don't discuss it with my students.....lol, but they are only in preschool and kindergarten! all of the teachers know that i am greek, tho. i wore my pin for badge day and i wore my phi mu flip flops for "beach day." and how could i forget that at my last job, EVERYONE knew i was greek bc i wore tshirts every day!!! again, i never discussed it with my students.
|
I am a greek teacher as well!
I don't have ZTA letters in my classroom, but I do have a lot of strawberry items. I told my students on the first day of class that I am in a sorority. So far they havn't asked too much about it. Hopefully I can encourage some of them to go greek in college as well! |
My high school Home Ec teacher was an Alpha Phi, my kindergarten teacher was a KKG, my high school English teacher was a KD, and some of my camp counselors from summer camp in TN were KKGs, DGs, & Tri Delts.

I had teachers from the NPC and NPHC all through school. One of my favorite people in the world wasn't a teacher, but she advised the all of the student media at my alma mater. She is a VERY proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and often told me stories about how the BSU (baptist student union) and KKG helped save her life during her Freshman year. I used to catch her singing "Oh, Kappa Kappa Kappa Gamma, I'm so happy that I am a..." sometimes at work! I lost touch with her after she moved to Canada.. so if any Kappas can tell me how to find her again, I'd really appreciate a PM! *lol* |
My school had two Alpha Phi Alpha teachers, one of whom became my sponsor.
There was one Omega Psi Phi...the track coach was a Phi Beta Sigma...and the Attendance Counselor was a Kappa Alpha Psi. I don't remember any Zeta Phi Betas or Sigma Gamma Rhos. HOWEVER.... One assistant principal, two gym teachers, my math teacher, the chemistry teacher, and a few more...all Delta Sigma Thetas. And....one assistant principal, my physics teacher, my biology teacher, three or more english teachers...all AKA's. THEY NEVER LET YOU FORGET. |
In high school...
...our headmaster was an AXO (from 'Bama). I didn't realize it until I saw her in the Lyre--incidentally enough, the first one I received as an initiate. ...one of my coaches was a DZ, another was a Tri-Delt (I think). ...two or three teachers were KDs. ...one of the guidance counselors is an AKA. Each spring, there was a presentation given by our Alumnae Panhellenic to introduce women to Greek Life, and let us know the deal with our recommendations, along with rush tips that I've heard on GC. Usually, each of the Greek teachers would wear the NPC "Go Greek!" buttons that day, and attend the presentation. |
When I was in 6th grade our social studies teacher gave us extra credit for knowing the greek alphabet. I don't remember her ever mentioning that she was greek, but I also didn't care much about greek life then, either.
When I was in hs I remember my band director talking about his fraternity experiences once. He said something like "one of the stupidest things I ever did..." and was talking about some funny pledging stories that involved wearing burlap underwear for a week and other things that were obviously hazing. At the time, I still had no real interest in greek life, so I didn't think much of it. Although after a few years of college I was like 'I wonder what fraternity he's in". Being that he's a band director, I'd say Phi Mu Alpha is a possibility, but I haven't seen him in years, and I do intend on asking whenever I do see him again. Other than that, I don't recall ANY of my teachers EVER mentioning it. |
Well she wasn't my teacher, but my principals wife went on all our choir tours with us and one time I was working at the mall after I was initiated, they came in and were asking about college and stuff and I mentioned that I joined a sorority. She asked with one and I told her that I am an ADPi. She got so excited. She started singing some rush song and pulled me into a hug. It was pretty odd at the time, but now that I look back on it I think it was also pretty sweet.
As for my other teachers, they never mentioned too much about their college experiences. Go figure huh? My drama teacher rushed when she was at Arizona State but didn't join and was actually shocked to find out that I was in a sorority. Most people just don't see me as being a 'sorority girl', as if there is a typical one, but there are stereotypes. Anways. Brianna Alpha Delta Pi |
My high school psychology teacher was the first initiate into Pi Kappa Phi at the university I attend. He talked about fraternity life all the time during class. After listening to him talk about his experiences, I knew I wanted to go greek.

Lots of Greek prospective and active teachers... that's so awesome!
As for me, I have no clue if any of my former teachers were Greek, although I suspect a few of them may have been. I'll have to ask the next time I'm on one of my alma maters' campuses. Like a lot of you, I also plan on having some little tidbits of greek life in my classroom, whether or not I teach elementary or secondary school... not sure yet. If I end up at a middle or high school, I'll definitely have some stuff around the room because I'd love to let people know the positive side of Greek life at an early age. On a side note, a male teacher I adored in middle school (and secretly hoped was Greek, but not so much anymore) was just found to have hidden some sexual molestation charges (with male students) for over 10 years and is most likely going to end up in prison... that freaked me out. It's been about a week since i've known and I cannot get over it... you never know people as well as you think... |
along the same lines...
I recently switched my major from secondary ed to communications, but I had plans to have DG stuff in my classrooms......I don't ever remember having any greek teachers before (but i could have very well missed it) but this summer I worked at a girl scout camp and I wore my bid day shirt, my letter sweat shirts and my lavilere a lot and had a number of questions...I worked with a Sigma Kappa and Kappa Delta that wore a ton more letters than me, so I'm sure they were noticed! Who knows, maybe we've got future girls that will write on this board about how we influenced them to go Greek!
Greek Love and Mine, Mandie |
It turned out that one of my favorite teachers in high school was one of the founding sisters of my chapter of Phi Mu. She never mentioned it in class, but I saw her at the mall after I had been initiated and she ran up to me and exclaimed, "We're sisters!"
|
I'm doing my student teaching now, and I haven't worn my letters or badge yet. I wasn't sure whether I was going to, but today my cooperating teacher mentioned something about one of her sorority sisters. I asked which sorority she was in, and it turns out that she's an AOP from Minnesota. I'm going to wear my Key tomorrow!

some of you know MY greek teacher!!!!
Well... I was exposed to the whole greek system by my high school journalism teacher. She always talked about starting an online newsletter for her chapter, and even mentioned receiving a "really big" award from nationals for her service. I remember having to ask her several times what sorority she was in, because the letters were do foreign to me (not to mention I didn't understand the concept of a sorority!) I even remember going to a conference with her for the weekend, and she had their luggage tag!!! haha...
She was actually the one who pushed me to go to U. of Florida, even though my parents wanted me to stay home. Then when I got to UF... she was the only one to push me to go greek--- or at least rush and decide for myself. (i ended up rushing sophomore year) She is the one and only reason I was so informed during rush--- my Pi Chi's can't even compare to her! She even introduced me to this website!!! lol.... She also told me about other greek teachers at my high school--- who never once mentioned they were greek. Well... my (former) high school journalism teacher is a Kappa Delta-- and you all know her as "kdonline." We obviously still keep in touch!!! (I keep her updated on the Florida Greek community!) :):):):) The funny thing is that even though I didn't become a KD... one of her favorite ladies from her high school (that she eventually taught at later on...) was a Kappa! |
by the way....
KappaKittyCat.... our recruitment shirts this year said "because class isn't just something you attend." So I thought it was really cute to see it on your signature! :)
|
Aww! I'm so flattered!
