New Here! Hi Girls!
[COLOR=deeppink]Hey Girlies! I'm new to this whole Greek thing. I just started at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. LOL, I bet nobody knows where it is! Anyway, I'm interested in joining a sorority up here. I know that we have an Open House on Sept. 10th and the Rush starts on the 15th I think. Well, since I'm new to this whole thing I was hoping someone would be nice enough to explain some "duh" things to me. Like-what exactly are mixers? Is getting into a sorority hard? How can I make my chances at getting in better? I'm sure that there have been previous posts about this, but I'm having trouble getting around the forum so any links would be helpful to me. I just need to know the obvious stuff I guess...because I honestly have no idea what to do and I don't want to sound stupid. Well, I guess that's everything. My e-mail address is Snorky_R@hotmail.com in case you have any good tips or any help for me. I hate to be a bother but I hope I don't sound too dumb either. By the way, are there any other girls from Shippensburg U here? If there are, just send me an email and we can hook up on campus. Thanks a ton girls! XOXO;)

Well let me be the first to welcome you! http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/wavey.gif
What organizations are on your campus? |
The GLOs at Shippensburg are
(Inter)Nationals: Alpha Omicron Pi Alpha Phi Alpha Sigma Tau Delta Zeta Phi Sigma Sigma Locals: Alpha Sigma Sigma Delta |
This is a good thread for you! :)

Mixers are when another sorority gets together with another fraternity or sorority for a social event.
Never mind, I found the orgs AOII Alpha Phi Alpha Sigma (a local) Alpha Sigma Tau Delta Zeta Phi Sigma Sigma Sigma Delta (a local) The NPHCs are Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta |
Mixers are private parties where only the members of one fraternity and one sorority (sometimes 2 fraternities and 2 sororities) attend. They usually have a fun theme.
Here is a link to the Greek Affairs office at Shippensburg: http://www.ship.edu/%7edeanstu/Greeks/ It should tell you what you need to know and has an email if you want to contact the director of Greek affairs. The page that has a short bio of all the sororities is down (probably to correct its being in all Greek letters, LOL). Here are some threads you might find helpful (thanks Christin): http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=34262 (pnm's-why should I be in a sorority?) http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=35965 (something for pnm's to remember) http://forums.greekchat.com/gcforums...threadid=30758 (Rush - What to NOT do or say) Remember to be yourself...you might be able to fake your way into a sorority that is not "you", but you'll never be truly at home there. There are LOTS of Pennsylvania people on the board so we do know where Shippensburg is ;). Good luck! |
This is a good link too (thank you to Pnguitrax...it's her webpage)...

Hi PinkShipChick07,
I went to Susquehanna University, so I know where Ship is - one of my sisters dated a guy from Ship for a while. Good luck with Recruitment!!! I hope that you will share your story with us!!! Best of luck, Allison |
AWWW! You girls are so sweet. The links really helped. Especially the "don't say this" one. I'm so nervous...already! And our Open House isn't until next month! AUGH, I'm gonna lose my mind! LOL. Well, Thanks a ton for everything and I'll be sure to keep everyone up to date on how I'm doing! XOXO

it's going to be fine Pinkship. i htink GC is a great resource for anyone going through recruitment. i wish i had found it before i went through.
|
Just wanted to welcome a fellow Pennsylvania girl onto GreekChat! This is such a great source of information and the people on here are super helpful, so enjoy!
Good luck with rush! |
welcome PinkShip! From one state schooler (Bloomsburg) to another :) you'll find a bunch of us here!
|
Good luck! We're here to answer any of your questions. I'm from York, not too far from Ship.
My best advice is to keep an open mind an examine all your options. You never know where this road will lead you. Be as involved as you can in campus activities and you will meet a lot of greeks on a different level. Best of luck! |
Nothing but the best of luck is wished for you as you await the start of recruitment. Feel free to ask as many questions as you have....the support and answers you'll receive from anyone here on GC is phenomenal! :)

one of my good friends went to ship! he didn't rush, but he did play volleyball. i went to muhlenberg, so it wasn't that far away! anyway, i can't speak for sure, but i don't believe that rush is that competitive there. if you go and have fun, you will be fine! good luck!

PinkShipChick07,
I'm EagleChick19, but I'm also from a state school (Lock Haven). My hometown is Camp Hill, about an hour from Ship. I'm doing an internship with PCN (Pennsylvania Cable Network) this semester, so if you need to talk to a GCer, I'm here. I'm glad that you decided to rush. Give all the organizations a chance. (I'm not biased towards AST!) I would love for you to find a home @ Ship. Greek Love, EagleChick19 |
Hi and Welcome to Greekchat,
As everyone else said just relax and be yourself. Most important go through each open house and event with an open mind and then listen to what your heart is telling you. Then then second most important thing is please don't forget to post all your experiences every day of rush to fuel all are rush thread addictions :D hahaha. Oh, a lot of people do recommend you create fake names for the groups until you can reveal the bid day information. That way things remain fairly anonymous as you go through recruitment. Good luck and I can't wait to read your recruitment stories. Carolyn |
Good luck and have fun!
|
i didn't know there was a Phi Sig chapter there
WOW |
Everyone has given you excellent advice and links for you to follow. I echo their responses. Best of luck! :)

Thank you girls, You have been a ton of help! I'm glad to hear that rush isn't too competitive. Besides, I have 9 options to choose from so I'm sure I'll find a home somewhere. I had another question also. My mother went to the same University and she knows a girl that she graduated with who can talk to a few girls on campus about inviting me back. Also, my boyfriend's best friend has a friend who is the vice president of our Greek Affairs here on campus. Should I have each of them talk to their friends to help me get recruited or does that give off a bad vibe? I'm glad to hear that Ship is noncompetive. That's neat. Well, thanks again for the info. You girls are totally the best and I'm so glad I found GC.

If your mother's friend wants to write a recommendation for you and send it to the sorority, that would be fine, but she should not talk to the girls. They would feel extremely pressured by that, and it can be construed as an infraction if any of the other groups would hear of it. (infraction means the sorority in question is punished) The only reason you should talk to the Greek affairs VP is if you have questions about rush. Under no circumstances should you ask him/her for any sort of "in." They are supposed to be impartial and support all the chapters. Depending on the Greek system's opinion of the VP, even if they could do that, it might harm you as well. I know the old Panhel advisor at my school was such an idiot that if she had anything nice to say about someone, I would have voted the rushee out right away. |
Alright. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks. I mean, I'm excited to get in and everything, but I want it to be ME that gets myself in...not my connections, ya know? I guess I just wanna show everbody that I can do it myself without help from anyone. But anyways, thanks for the answer. If I have any new questions, I'll be sure to ask GC is GREAT!

PinkShipChick, check out the LXA Chapter at Ship. Think they have an outstanding Chapter there and a couple of them are on GC!:)
What State is Shippensberg In!:D LOL!:) PLEEZE PENN PEEPS, dont flame me!:) |
LoL...thanks for the advice. I've been to LXA parties before and they were pretty good. One of the houses I wanna get into, Phi Sig, is right next to our LXA house on Frat Row (It's a street with most Greek Houses in Ship). Do you know who is from Ship on GC? Maybe I could talk to them on campus and see what they think about Greek Life. Anyway, thanks a bunch. I know that LXA is a group of cool guys, so hopefully I get to know them a little better in the next few weeks.

hey welcome and best of luck
one of my best friends goes to ship and is a part of oen of the sororities and she pledged last fall she loves greek life so much. I think it is formal rush in the fall at ship??? but want to wish ya the best of luck...i know she loved going through rush up there. |
The best advice I can give you is to join a house that makes you feel comfortable. If you walk in and feel like you have to be putting on a show for those girls, then that's not the house for you. Join a sorority that you could call home. They're all going to have basically the same activities and the same things to offer you, it is all about the women that you want to remember as your sisters. Find girls that you can laugh with, cry with and be yourself around. you'll know when the time is right.
