Randi's Rush Thread

I just joined this site, like, yesterday, but I wanted to post, anyway since I understand that a lot of you are rush thread addicts. :) I'm a sophomore at Jacksonville State University. We have 5 sororities on campus: Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Mu, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, and Delta Zeta. Rush actually starts on Friday, August 29, but orientation is Tuesday, August 26. I just moved back on campus today, so I decided I'd go ahead and start this thread. I'm already feeling really, really nervous. For one thing, I'm not too sure how the different sororities here feel about sophomores, juniors, and seniors rushing. I'm also wondering if anyone could tell me what is appropriate attire for orientation. The booklet I was sent tells me what I'm supposed to wear on all the other days, but it doesn't mention orientation. I assume that not mentioning it means that I don't have to wear anything in particular, but you know what they say about assuming. I think my biggest problem, though, is that I can be rather shy when I'm exposed to new situations, and I know perfectly well that standing in the corner and saying nothing is, like, suicide during rush. Does anyone have any advice for me? In spite of being nervous, I'm definitely, DEFINITELY excited. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted. :D

Welcome to GC! Good luck, have fun and enjoy yourself! Stay around and let us know how rush goes! *Yay! A new rush thread!*

MeLikey 08-24-2003 07:45 PM

Good luck! I can't suggest what to wear for orientation because I don't know how your school is-- maybe you can ask your Rho Chi? I remember just wearing jeans and a nice sweater for orientation... ooh typing sweater just made me hot!

twhrider13 08-24-2003 07:50 PM

Actually, we don't meet our Rho Chis until orientation. I'd already had that thought. I'm really thinking something along the lines of a pair of nice pants and a cute shirt. I think it would be better to go somewhere in the middle of really dressy (which obviously wouldn't be right just for orientation) and really casual (which probably wouldn't be right, either). What do you all think?

twhrider13 08-25-2003 08:39 PM

*Bounces excitedly*

Only one more day until orientation!

(Ok, I'll try to control myself now!)

AOII_LB93 08-25-2003 08:49 PM

Have a fantastic recruitment!:)

mmcat 08-25-2003 09:14 PM

professional casual is a nice way. and you're there. good slacks, nice top, comfy but stylish shoes...all good.
that will get you started.
good luck.
have a ball.

twhrider13 08-26-2003 05:19 PM

Ok...two more hours until orientation. (I'll be sure to update when I get back.) Right now, I'm sitting here with my hair in hot rollers, just waiting! Anyway, I'm wearing a pair of black pinstripe pants with a white shirt (it's like the button-up kind, except mine laces up instead of buttons) and a pair of black chunky heeled loafer-like shoes, if that makes any sense. I'm so excited!

SparkliiQTMTSU 08-26-2003 06:13 PM

Good Luck and have a blast!!!!!

Orientation

Hey, everyone! I'm back from orientation now. I'm really, really excited, because all the Rho Chis seem extremely nice and so do all the PNMs. I thought I would be the only sophomore rushing, but it turns out there are at least 2 others! There were only 56 girls at orientation. I was shocked! I figured there would be soooo many more. With only about 60 girls rushing and only 5 chapters on campus, then it stands to reason that most girls would get bids, right? (I mean, I know it depends on who is interested in whom, but I'm talking percentage-wise.) So, anyway, I just wanted to update y'all. First round (values round) starts Friday, so I'll post again then!

mmcat 08-27-2003 07:48 AM

have a blast...

twhrider13 08-28-2003 01:47 PM

Hi, all! I'm just getting in from my first day of classes. It all seems to be ok, but I'm wondering, "Where are all the guys already?"!!!!!! But it's all right, I suppose. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that rush starts tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 Central. Since the first two rounds at JSU are pretty casual, I'll be wearing a kind of loose sleeveless beige shirt with an asymmetrical (sp?) hemline and a denim skirt with tan slides. I've also decided to use ice cream flavors (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, and peach) as substitutions for chapter names. I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes tomorrow! :D

DZHBrown 08-28-2003 04:31 PM

Your outfit sounds super cute! Good luck!!

VSUPhiMu 08-28-2003 05:17 PM

Do Jacksonville State's chapters have individual websites? I looked on the JSU Greek Life homepage, but all it had was links to Nationals. Good Luck!!!

twhrider13 08-28-2003 06:06 PM

Three of our chapters have websites, and they're buried on the student life page. It took me a long time to find them as well. But AOII, Phi Mu, and ZTA do have their own pages. (AXD and DZ don't.)

Phi Mu: http://www.phimu-jsu.com/

AOII_LB93 08-28-2003 08:39 PM

Very excited for you Randi...you are going to have a blast! Enjoy yourself! I'm sure the guys will show up eventually. :) ;)

OUlioness01 08-28-2003 10:17 PM

ok so i'm completely oblivious to everything around me apparently and just now noticed that you have a chapter of Phi Mu! LOL. anyway, i'm so excited to read your rush thread...as a popular rush slogan says, "NO matter which way you go you can't go wrong!"

twhrider13 08-29-2003 01:43 PM

Today is the day!!!!!! I've got class from 1:45 to 2:45, then rush check in is from 3:00-3:30. I'm so excited. As soon as I get in tonight, I'll be sure to update. Oh, and I want to thank you all for your support!

twhrider13 08-29-2003 11:15 PM

Hiiiiii!!!! I'm just returning from the first round of rush! I'm going to give you all a short rundown of what happened, then I'm going to bed, because I'm soooooo exhausted. None of our chapters had houses, so all the parties were set up in different buildings around campus.

The first party I went to was Strawberry. They're the smallest chapter on campus, but they really seemed to me to be the most down-to-earth and have the strongest sisterhood.

The second was Peach. I was secretly prepared not to like them, but they surprised me. They seemed really nice and not nearly as shallow as I had expected.

The third was Chocolate. I thought I would like these girls better than I actually did. They were all very nice, but we just didn't click like I hoped.

The fourth was Vanilla. These girls were great, and they seemed geniunely interested in what I had to say.

The fifth was Blueberry. They, too, were nice, but they seemed more interested in promoting their chapter than in learning about me as a person.

If I had to rank tonight, I would choose Strawberry first, Vanilla second, Peach third, Chocolate fourth, and Blueberry fifth. Tomorrow is another open round, and I think I'm about to go to bed. I'll let you all know about Philanthropy rounds as soon as I can get to a computer!

WhiteDaisy128 08-29-2003 11:33 PM

Sounds like you had a blast! Good luck getting invites! I can't wait to see what happens next!

pinkyphimu 08-30-2003 12:03 AM

what a great night! good luck tomorrow!

btw, all of this ice cream talk has got me sooooo hungry! i have been craving a vanilla soft serve in a cone, but the stupid dq is closed!!!

Aphigurl 08-30-2003 12:38 AM

Good Luck tomorrow! And it sounds like you had a great time tonight.

mmcat 08-30-2003 01:52 AM

day one sounds terrific....now to day two.
good luck
keep having fun.

twhrider13 08-30-2003 09:21 AM

I'm getting ready to go to Philanthropy round this morning. (Yay!) I'm definitely going to keep an open mind about everything and see if just talking to different girls changes my opinion about each chapter. We have a break in between rounds and receiving invites, so I'll post how the rounds went then. After we get invites, we go out to eat with our Rho Chi group, but as soon as I get in, I'll let you know who invited me back!

AOII_LB93 08-30-2003 12:39 PM

Randi,
Coming from a small chapter myself, I just wanted to say kudos to you for seeing the sisterhood and not just the numbers. That is truly what is most important.

Have a great time today!:)

twhrider13 08-30-2003 04:31 PM

I'm back from second round! I just wanted to update you all again before I go take a nap. Today was Philanthropy Day, so we got to make all kinds of cute things.

The first party we visited today was Vanilla. You know those paper plates with the animal faces on them? (I can't tell the animal we used because it'll give away the sorority!) We laced pieces of ribbon through holes the sisters had punched into the plates to give to children to teach them to tie their shoes. I really liked Vanilla yesterday, and I liked them even more today. They are a kind of middle-sized chapter, but in talking with the different sisters, I saw that their sisterhood really shines through.

The next party was Blueberry. We put stress reliever balls into boxes and decorated them with ribbons and decorative tape for this chapter. These girls (who have one of the larger chapters on campus) were nice to me, but for some reason, we just didn't click. They seem a little more superficial than what I'm looking for, which isn't to say that they aren't nice people.

The third party was Strawberry. We stuffed gloves with cotton and pushed pipe cleaners into the fingers (which we then stuck down into a small flower pot, like a flower) to be used to teach children sign language. I made my hand say, "I really love you." The girl I was paired with and I had sooooo much in common. Like I said earlier, Strawberry is a small group, but I loved them so much.

The fourth party was Peach. We made "boo-boo bunnies" out of bathcloths and ribbon. They have a little hole in the middle that children can stick ice in to put on their "boo-boos" (hence the name). I was surprised again at how much I liked Peach. They're also a larger group, but they seemed far less superficial than Blueberry.

The last party was Chocolate. We made flower pens for the Girl Scouts with artificial flowers and ink pens. I liked these girls a lot better today than I did yesterday. Conversation flowed better, and I just seemed to click with them a lot more. They, too, are a small group, but I was much more impressed today.

So that's how my day has been so far. We go back at 6:00 Central tonight to pick up invitations for tomorrow, and then we go out to eat with our Rho Chi group. This is how I rate the chapters today:
1.) Strawberry
2.) Vanilla
3.) Chocolate & Peach (tied)
4.) Blueberry

I'll be sure to let you all know which chapters I got invited back to as soon as I get in from dinner!

UKDaisy 08-30-2003 04:41 PM

yay

Aww.... I love recruitment threads!!!! I'm so glad you're keeping an open mind! I"ll be thinking about you and your future new home!:D

mmcat 08-31-2003 06:16 AM

sweetie...check back in.
it's now sunday morning everywhere....
just concerned.

DeltaBetaBaby 08-31-2003 12:55 PM

Ha, hate to tell you this, but most of us older folks on GC know exactly which chapter is which from your philanthropy descriptions. Don't worry, though, we won't tell.;)

AOII_LB93 08-31-2003 01:08 PM

Not necessarily Delta Beta, my chapter has done several of those at philanthropy day through the years. :) Just depends if you are talking about local or international philanthropies.

bgsarah 08-31-2003 04:45 PM

enjoying reading your thread. good luck!!! :)

almost 100% sure I know who strawberry vanilla and blueberry are, but chocolate and peach are throwing me for a loop!! :)
