Wearing Letters After College

When I was in NYC today, I was walking behind this guy who had on some old looking black t-shirt. I didn't even realize it until my friend nudged me and pointed to the top of his shirt-- it had Phi Delta Theta letters... I didn't get a chance to read what the rest of the shirt had on it... looked like some kind of rush or formal shirt by the fun shape of the letters. He was probably in his late 20s, early 30s. I was just wondering if anyone still wears their t-shirts... whether they be billboards, rush, p.r., or formal/dated party t-shirts... and is it appropriate? I haven't looked into an alum chapter yet, so I don't know if they have t-shirts with letters.

moe.ron 08-20-2003 03:17 AM

I wear some of the "function" shirts whenever i go biking or work out.

Jadey28 08-20-2003 03:23 AM

You know what? I worked hard for my letters and I will wear them now that I am out of college and until I feel like it. I really don't care if it's appropriate to wear them since I'm not in school anymore. I am a member of my local alum chapter. I contribute to my organization's fundraising events. I am an advisor for an undergraduate chapter. And I am an active alum of the chapter I graduated from. I think every greek should wear their letters proud until the day they die. You should be happy to show others of your achievements and activities. I consider wearing your letters a "tribute" to your organization. And it's great PR for those who will eventually attend college. We have a saying, "Once a Phi Sigma Sigma, Always a Phi Sigma Sigma." This statement will always hold true in my mind.

(sorry to sound rude...this question hits a touchy spot with me)

MeLikey 08-20-2003 03:38 AM

Don't get me wrong, I love wearing my letters everywhere even if I'm just out of college... I wish I had even more t-shirts. I even wanted to order the new recruitment shirt... just wasn't sure if it's a common thing... I'd love to even wear a Delta Gamma Mom shirt (if they make them) or whatever house my future daughter chooses! I'm one of those girls who loves wearing her Delta Gamma letters/t-shirts and Greek shirts.

DeltaSigStan 08-20-2003 04:05 AM

Well, my future son has to know what the letters of the fraternity he's going to join when he goes to college look like...so, I'm at least gonna wear my letters around the house.

PandaOnProzac 08-20-2003 04:23 AM

A few Phi Delt bros and I were at Disneyland and we spotted a father wearing an old Phi Delt promo shirt. We didn't want to bother him since he was with his family but we made it clear to him of our presence since most of the group was wearing letters.

I would wear BOTH my letters well after college. KKPsi till I die and Proud to be a Phi!

AOX81 08-20-2003 06:44 AM

I wear my letters all the time! :)

Unregistered- 08-20-2003 07:08 AM

I wear my letters all the time too. Once in a while it'll get "cold" and I'll wear the standard letters sweatshirt.. But I have tons of t-shirts and baby tees and other stuff that I still sport around. I love it when I'm at a place like the mall and someone stops me and says, "I'm Greek too! I'm an XYZ from the University of ABC..." You don't run into a lot of Greeks in Hawaii.

Then there's the car...gotta love that AGD license plate holder.

AOIIalum 08-20-2003 07:29 AM

I still wear my Convention and LI tees, because I just haven't picked up anything else in recent years. That reminds me, I should really order a stitched sweatshirt for the cold weather.

Besides, why not wear my letters, even though I'm an ancient alumna? My guys need to know which girls to marry when they grow up ;)

JohnsDGsweethrt 08-20-2003 07:50 AM

I wear my letters and I graduated in 99!

mu_agd 08-20-2003 07:56 AM

i wear mine all the time.. although it's mostly tshirts that i wear to the gym or the grocery store or something like that. i also have a windbreaker that i wear a lot. i passed down all my sweatshirts though and keep thinking i need to get another one. speaking of which, for anyone that is from boston or goes to bu, is there a greek store on campus?

KSigkid 08-20-2003 08:14 AM

I wear letters every great once in a while - mostly to the gym or when I'm kinda hanging around. Since I work at a preschool, I wear them to work once in a while, just because if they get paint or something on them it's not a huge deal.

mu agd - there's no greek store on campus, there used to be one kind of near campus a few years ago, but it's closed now.

White_Chocolate 08-20-2003 09:00 AM

are you kidding me?

letters totally separate the elite from the obselete. . .

basically saying 'i'm Greek and g-d proud of it too, baby!!!!'

LeslieAGD 08-20-2003 09:56 AM

I wear my function/screenprinted shirts constantly.
However, I don't wear my block letters much.

sigmagrrl 08-20-2003 10:01 AM

All of my letters are old and ripped. I plan on getting a couple of new sets at Convention next year...

Anyone in the DC/MD/NoVA area know of a place I can get some made???

sigtau305 08-20-2003 10:08 AM

I always wear my letters all the time.

shadokat 08-20-2003 10:09 AM

I wear my t-shirts/tanks in the summer, sweatshirts in the winter. Always when we go back for alumni weekend!! And you gotta have nice ones for Convention :) It's really just a matter of preference if you do or don't. I got a great little D Phi E Alumna polo shirt, which I LOVE!

DZHBrown 08-20-2003 10:09 AM

Yes, I wear mine.

DWAlphaGam 08-20-2003 10:25 AM

I wear mine occasionally. I agree, those big block letter sweatshirts are great in the winter!

The University Store in College Park, MD

GeekyPenguin 08-20-2003 11:28 AM

Well I'm still in college - just not at a college with my sorority. I wear my letters occasionally - I wear the party/screenprinted shirts to work out or to scrub it at the library, and I'll toss on my stitch letters when I'm cold...but you can definitely still tell I'm a Gamma Phi by my car stickers, keychain, lavalier, tote bag, etc..

MoxieGrrl 08-20-2003 11:31 AM

I wear mine all the time! :) (Pitt people - is there anywhere to get letters here?)

twinstars 08-20-2003 12:03 PM

I just graduated in June, but I still wear some of the more appropriate t-shirts to work out (fundraising events, some rush t-shirts, etc). I look younger than I am, so I don't think it strikes anyone as weird. I definitely look like I could still be in college.

When I move away and start a career I may retire the old shirts though, or just wear them around the house.

As of now, I've tossed the "Playboy Mansion" mixer t-shirts, though. ;) And the one with the naked leprochaun (sp) I only wear to sleep in.

dzandiloo 08-20-2003 02:48 PM

I don't have any block letter shirts anymore, but I have a Surfing Sisters t-shirt and a couple of long-sleeve function t-shirts that are still in pretty good shape (and I graduated in 1992, ahem) that get some wear...but now that law school is over, I suspect I will get less use out of them.

My daughter wears her embroidered Delta Zeta Legacy t-shirt & shorts all the time though, so we get some mileage out of that....

CatStarESP4 08-20-2003 03:03 PM

I am 30 years old and still wear my letters. Just recently, my mom told that I am too old to continue wearing them that I am no longer a teenager (she actually said this to my face). I don't believe her at all. Besides, being in a GLO is for life. I don't care if you are 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 or even 100 years old, you are never too old to wear your letters and with pride.

lionlove 08-20-2003 03:03 PM

I gave most of my shirts to my little sis when I graduated. I now where letters on occaision but not nearly as much as when I was a collegiate.

enlightenment06 08-20-2003 03:07 PM

never stop pledging...

I'm rocking the Black and Old Gold of my A-Phi 'till I die!!

sueali 08-20-2003 04:00 PM

I still wear letters all of the time, and when I'm not actually wearing clothes with SK on them. I have my lavalier and SK pin on at all times. Youcan definately tell I'm greek. Oh yeah I forgot I also have my letters tattoed on my foot where people can see them when I wear certain shoes. People at work always ask what is that and I respond their my sorority letters and if I get a dirty look or a snide comment I usually have a good response. Bottom line I let everyone know I'm a sigma kappa.

socialbutterfly 08-20-2003 04:35 PM

I think wearing letters after college is something you don't do as much as when you were on campus, but honestly, you don't have the time or money to go buy new gear to keep up with everyone else right?

I think its great when I see an older person in their 40's or 50's sporting letters...I always think they must have work their butt off pledging to get them, and will always show their true pride.

Jill1228 08-20-2003 04:57 PM

You can get letters at any university that has GLO. Also have you tried Ebay?

aephi alum 08-20-2003 06:30 PM

I wear event/rush/bid day t-shirts to work out in, and I have a VERY beat up AEPhi sleep shirt that I wear a lot. My favorite letters (also my first - big fuzzy black sweatshirt with floral print letters) come in very handy on chilly winter mornings! :)

I don't wear my letters to work, because I don't think it's appropriate to wear t-shirts or sweatshirts in a corporate environment. If I had a lavalier I'd probably wear it (I somehow never got around to acquiring one).

I was thinking the same thing. You probably wouldn't wear letters to work because it isn't appropriate...especially working in a corporate environment.

But for everyday wear, why not?! Sport those letters while going to the grocery store, or sitting in the garden, or picking the kids up from school, etc, etc.

goldendelta 08-20-2003 08:15 PM

I wear letters all the time. I've retired my jersey though, I wore that almost every day in college. I wear my lavilear every day and I got my letters on my college ring too. I also have a ring with dolphins on it. And I wear my badge on special occasions (Founders Day, Pansy brunch, etc).

AGDLynn 08-20-2003 10:22 PM

I wear mine! My current fav is a yellow polo shirt with the AGD red yellow green greek letters. They aren't that noticeable unless you are pretty close, lol. Wore it one night to the local pizza place and ran into hubby's co-worker whom I've know for about 4 years..turns out he was an AGD big bro (his now wife wasn't an AGD, lol.)

Tom Earp 08-20-2003 10:29 PM

You better beleive it!!!!! Hat on weekend and going to Sports things!!!!

Polo Shirt when I can!:)

After 38 years and am still PROUD!

Arent You????:(

If Not Why?

pinkyphimu 08-20-2003 11:05 PM

i definately wear my letters a lot. in the first 5 years after graduation, i worked at a job were i wore jeans and t-shirts EVERY day, so my event shirts got lots of milage. i have 4 letter shirts/ sweatshirts, but the tshirts are ruined...and the sweatshirts i wear a lot in the winter. i have been wearing my event shirts all summer while working at the pool...and one of the guys asked if i owned a shirt that *didn't* say phi mu! lol. i also have a phi mu travel coffee mug and now a great new bag to use so that everyone who didn't know i was a phi mu at work, would know now!

Munchkin03 08-20-2003 11:10 PM

Most of my letters aren't in the best condition, so I'll wear them to the gym, or going jogging. My best letters, I gave to my little sisters. I may not wear shirts with my letters, but I have a lavaliere I wear a lot, a keychain, and my workout bag.

It's not that I'm not proud; I am, and plan to be very active as an alumna. But I've just grown out of wearing any logos emblazoned across my chest--that also goes for my college.

I totally agree! When I'm 80 I'll still be wearing my letters. I may be crusty by then but I'll still be as hardcore about my sorority as I am now.

You're not rude at all. I didn't become greek till last year. I'm not in school. So you better believe I'm going to sporting the Carolina Blue and Lavender with pirde:D

I don't have many shirts and things. I'm hoping to make up for that at Convention:D I do wear my lavaliere everyday

polarpi 08-21-2003 01:33 AM

I graduated over a year ago and I still wear my letters with pride (I'm also still in school at another college right now). Like many others have said, being Greek is for life, so I don't understand why you WOULDN'T wear your letters after college whenever you could! Liek we heard in college, letters are advertisement for our organization, and we want to show everyone how proud we are to be a member of that organization. I can't wait to have children who will hopefully see the benefits of being in a Greek organization for themselves...they'll definitely see their mom sporting her letters! :)
