Source Awards

Did you watch? If so, what did you think? Before I post my opinion, I just wanted to know what others thought.

darling1 08-30-2000 10:22 AM

I saw the Source Awards and for the most part it was aiiight. I loved Mo'nique!! She was holding it down http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. As much as I sometime hate admit it, I LOVE LIL KIM'S SONG!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. For me that was the highlight. Over all I should have watched a repeat of something else or nothing at all.

AKAtude 08-30-2000 10:43 AM

I watched the "pre-show" with Brandy and Ray J. After Eve won the award for best new artist, I grew tired of it. The morning radio personalities were giving props to Mos Def's opening commentary.

SkeeBunny 08-30-2000 10:54 AM

I wanted to get others opinions first to see if I was just getting old or if my issues were justifiable. Ok, here's my take on the whole show. I was kind of appalled by most of the program. I understand that this is a show "for us, by us" but damn, why do we always represent "us" in the way that we do. There were so many bleeps while people were talking that I had to truly figure out what was being said. The "n" word was used repeatedly and some people were acting like they just had no home training. I guess it's true ... money can't buy you class. Then, to top it off, a huge fight broke out in the audience and the rest of the show had to be cancelled. And we wonder why people (not just white folks) criticize the hip-hop culture and all that it entails. It was surreal that different celebrities had to come on to compensate for the rest of the time slot and give public service announcements against violence. While the camera scanned the audience, I saw several notables (i.e. Maxine Waters and hubby) and I just cringe to think that they were subjected to such animilistic behavior.

Am I off base here or is anyone else feeling me? If I'm missing something, please enlighten me.

Mz. Sports Luva 08-30-2000 11:22 AM

SkeeBunny, I am most definitely feeling you. The Hip-Hop community (to me) acts as if they are from another world and it's uncool to show respect or even give other groups or rappers props.

I know that it's an image that they have to portray, but did we have to have all the cursing and the use of the "n" word for ALL of the world to see. Even cute little Bow-Wow was cursing. My goodness, at what point do we draw the line.

I would like to add that I am truly a fan of Hip-Hop; however, I think that they do not have to keep reinforcing the idea that they are stupid, ignorant and do not know how to conduct themselves in public!

AKAtude 08-30-2000 11:26 AM

No, you are not off base at all. I applaud you for saying what you did. That is, in part, one of the reasons why I could not continue watching it.

Sterling 08-30-2000 01:21 PM

I'm sorry, but I usually like the Source awards show. However, after seeing last night's fiasco, I think that they should just have a 1 hour special next year. No audience, no stage... Have celebrity hosts tell us what the category is, show the video clips and only interview the winners(who know that they've won ahead of time). I should have made last night " A Blockbuster night." http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

ZChi4Life 08-30-2000 01:46 PM

Skeebunny, I definitely agree w/ you. I watched last night and was sitting there w/ my mouth wide open like "oh no they didn't go there". It was a trip! My friend who was watching it, called me and said "Wow, I'm proud to be black right now, aren't you?". I was truly embarrassed at the way people were behaving. And after Meth and Redman won, I was just thinking "dang, is everybody else gonna bring a whole mob up to the stage when they win too". I didn't watch the whole show all the way through cuz I just couldn't. I had to flip to other things. I did see Lil Kim and she was good....w/ the exception of the butt cleavage...but she performed well. And Lil Bow Wow swearing was not cute but he was pretty hype in the end. All in all, they should have not aired it. Then to make it worse, the local news did a segment on it! They showed the clips from the actual fight and when everyone was told to leave. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif I tell ya, we gotta get it together!

ps--did any of ya'll see the commercial about the beauty salon? It was for a salon that does braids and they stay open 24/7!

kingtut 08-30-2000 01:57 PM

It is sad,but i must agree with all of you. to me the show was sick.i do listen to some hip-hop but i feel that some artist are badly representing our race. after watching the show i felt sad because i know if black children look up to hip hop stars than no wonder why our community has such a problem. The thing that hurt me most is lil bow wow,how could JD have some toddler cursing on national TV. Hip Hop or not i think it is time that people understand that public perception means a lot and i lost all respect for JD.

PinkCashmere 08-30-2000 01:59 PM

Wow, you guys make me glad that I didn't watch the show. I'm not a big hip hop fan anyway, but like to stay up on what's going on. From what you guys have said and from what I have heard on the radio and tv, I am embarrassed for everyone who attended the show and was a part of it.

We wonder why there are so many negative stereotypes and so much negative publicity about black folks. But then we contribute to it by the things we do, how we act, and what we say. How sad!

LadyAKA 08-30-2000 02:27 PM

I can't believe they aired the show, I grew tired of seeing the same clips, they showed numerous people over and over because once the show was actually stopped the producers still had to make up something for us to see and it was just HORRIBLE. What was weird was that I liked Lil Kim's on stage parts .... usually on any other awards I would not have watched her (ie I would be paying attention to those with real talent), but her bit was really the only entertaining piece of the awards.
Buster did his thang, he was just trying to keep the crowd smiling.
Oh well, what we gonna do now??

1 N A million 08-30-2000 03:36 PM

Hello sorors and sisterfriends! Did anyone else notice how they cut and paste parts of the show together? Why did Monique have on one outfit and then change and then came back with the same outfit? And, why did Buster do the same thing? And, why did Method Man give the media their a** to kiss? I tell you sometimes we just show our a**! I agree, Lil Kim was about the best act on the show, along with Bow Wow. He is too cute! She could have kept her behind covered, though! And what was the deal with all of the exspensive cars on stage? I tell you the truth! I did watch the entire thing, though!

Catwoman 08-30-2000 04:28 PM

SkeeBunny...you are not getting old...that program was just trifling...you might say straight ghetto! I watched some of it because my friend called and told me to turn it on...I watched a little but couldn't take it...so I changed channels. I listen to some of the hip hop artists and enjoy the music...but the nation could have done without that show!

darling1 08-30-2000 05:39 PM

ALthough my comment was lite hearted in comparison to the others here I wanted to say that I have grown tired of these award shows for a real long time. Everyone's comments here can start a myriad of discussion ie: us versus them, keeping it real, using the 'n' word, how this ultimately has an affect on our younger generation. I am curious to know from you guys, what can we do to help change the mind-set of the youth who are and will be inevitably fascinated by this type of lifestyle? I mean it was only 10 years ago where everyone was preaching 'consciousness'.

AKA2D '91 08-30-2000 06:54 PM

That show was just too "low budget" for me! Sorry, but it was just not for me! I LOVE hip-hop, but dang.... the videos they make were better than that fiasco!

mizzkes 08-30-2000 07:26 PM

I must agree with everyone else. I only saw about 10-15 minutes of the program. The Lil Kim performace was actually all that I did see. I could not take it. One of my biggest pet peeves, and my overall "beef" with Hip Hop artists is that they don't express themselves very well. When someone is supposed to be an "artist" they should at least be able to verbalize their feelings. For instance,it drives me nuts to have a conversation with someone who constantly say "you know what I'm saying" as if that is the period at the end of a sentence. Little things like that...the "artists" who took the stage were just....uncouth.

chAKAlate 08-31-2000 04:04 PM

I agree with most of the sentiments expressed already.

I was so hype about the awards and was sorely dissapointed. It was so tacky and low budget. The people in the audience looked terrible as well and every guy there with the exception of a few was ugly.

To answer the question about why the cuts and pastes on the show. There were several fights that happened during the taping and so the night of the awards they had to cancel half of the show, that is why major awards showed pre-taped acceptance speeches. People in LA were acting a fool and as a LA native it is sad to say.

But I am hopeful that the Soul Train Awards will revive my interest in music awards.

AKAtude 08-31-2000 04:30 PM

And just think, it was shown in "prime-time". We had a discussion a while back about how our award shows seem to only air late at night and several months after the awards show took place. I wish this one was shown late, late, late at night.

Diarra 08-31-2000 05:13 PM

I am sorry to say but it is our fault ( meaning as a community). We keep on buying their music. We wonder why they act ghetto in public when all they showcase in their songs and videos is vulgarity, profanity and straight up disrespectfullness toward women and themselves... and we keep on watching... and requesting the songs on tv and radio. What exactly can you expect from these artists. Lil Bow Wow is cute in a video when he is talking about things way over his age, but then when he uses profanity on stage it is wrong!? help me to understand I just don't get it. In my opinion, the only thing we can do is stop buying their music. They may then understand that they have to loose the bad ... stuff ( for lack of a better word)... just a though

AKA2D '91 08-31-2000 07:29 PM

I don't think it has to do with just buying their music. What is seen, basically is all they know. Do you actually think that these performers take "grooming" classes?

Look at Mary J. In the beginning, she was out of control, but as she has gotten older, matured, and got the "right" people in her corner....MIRACLES can happen...she is able to express herself in interviews, her "speeches" are understandable, and so on and so forth...

ZChi4Life 09-01-2000 02:05 AM

Hello everyone,
There is really a bad trend going on w/ rappers and hip hop artists today. It's like a vicious cycle. The people behind the artists are telling them that things like sex, money, bling-bling, etc is what sells and that's what the people want. Meanwhile, the public is looking at the artists like "hey, such and such has got a lot of bling-bling, so I gotta get that too" or "ooh she wearing those booty shorts, a little bikini top, etc, etc so I gotta look like that". In turn, the artists and the people behind them look at the public and say "Oh yeah, all the teenagers, young people, etc are wearing this, driving that, etc". When in actuality, the public is merely mimicking the artists out there. It's actually NOT what the public "wants", but what they see from the artist. See the cycle? It's confusing to explain. But it's silly that the artists and their people don't see what's going on. It's like at this point, the artists have SO much influence on young people now, it's ridiculous! I mean, lil Bow Wow for instance. If today's artists weren't swearing up a storm, rocking ice, etc, do you think he'd be doing it? Nope. But b/c they are, then what does lil Bow Wow do? He "rocks an iced out Mickey Mouse around his neck". For shame, for shame!

Then, have you all noticed the trend of shooting a video in a "ghetto"? What is that?! I can't stand that! It's like they think "oh we'll shoot this in da hood and the people will feel us cuz we in da hood". Um no. It's just another thing that artists and their peeps think appeal to people. I mean, look at how they've coined the term 'ghetto fabulous'. Now the public thinks it's tight to live fabulously in the ghetto. Um, if you have that much money to spend on a car (not just any car but a $50,000+ car)...then shouldn't you have the money to bring yourself OUT of the ghetto? Or at least try to? I'm not trying to be mean or disrespect anyone, but really now...is that really the smart thing to do? Is it really cool to live 'ghetto fabulous'? Seems a little backwards to me....but I digress.

Sorry this is long. I am a big music fan, esp of hip hop. But it's getting to the point where all people talk about is bling bling, ice, the car(s) they got, the women they slept with....ugh, it's just not cute. I'd honestly rather listen to someone like Christina Aguilera (whom I love!), Backstreet Boys and others like that cuz I can deal w/ them talking about love and stuff. I can relate to that. It may be a little cheezy, but at least I don't have to worry about them up in the video w/ platinum plated teeth and about 20 pounds of ice around their necks! I like the beats, but I can't relate to that! I don't have bling bling! I don't drive what they drive! Lord, what is the world coming to! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

AKAtude 09-01-2000 08:38 AM

ZChi4Life, I'm with you. I like Christina's music as well.

Christina can sang her butt off. She puts Britney to shame.

Christina will be around for along time!
True talent...True talent!

I'm sorry but to me the source award was an disgrace to the black comm. It was ghetto put together at the last min. and some of the people were soooooo stupid..I'm sorry but thats just the way it is.

ahhkbah 09-05-2000 11:29 PM

between the utter embarassment of the Source Awards and BET's Cita my faith in viable Black entertainment is slowly dwindling. We get an award show see mistakes in it and do nothing to fix it. Who remembers the beef between Suge Knight and Puffy Combs a few years back. We saw how that ended. Profanity, oversized clothes, bling, and the like are cornerstones in the fixated minds of America's inner-city youth. What a lot of rappers fail to realize is that many no longer live the lives they rap about. And far to many times they glorify a lifestyle that robbed them of their innocence. They only perpetuate the problem.

Just a sidebar-Lil Bow Wow cursing-hmmm...what the!?!?!?

Eclipse 09-06-2000 09:08 AM

Once again I am showing my age and out-of-touch-ness, but who the heck is little Bow Wow and what is his claim to fame?

khearto 09-06-2000 09:08 PM

Post-Source Awards Controversy...Nightline is doing a three-part series on Hip-Hop/Rap culture, tonight. Should be interesting...
