Rush at UNF

I am new to this place... But I already love it. I am starting school at UNF on Monday as a freshman and rush starts on Wednesday. I don't want to repeat everything Smiley21 has written, but our sororities are Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, and Zeta Tau Alpha.. and I think they are starting Kappa Delta later on.

Well anyways, if anyone has any helpful info I would appreciate it!!

Best of luck to both of y'all!

And the worrying begins...

Ok.. so yesterday when I started this thread everything was still seeming so innocent and fun and easy... and now I am reading more and more about recommendation letter and quota and there are ONLY three sororities at our school already! Everything seems to be getting complicated. I am starting to feel the nervous-ness and anxious-ness just like when I had to sing in the 5th grade play...

Sistermadly 08-19-2003 01:30 PM

I know it just adds more worry fuel to your fire! But relax, be yourself, and enjoy this time. Who knows, you may be in for a surprise at the end of the week.

Good luck!

smiley21 08-19-2003 01:32 PM

Re: And the worrying begins...

i know i am the last person that needs to say this but relax!! i need to do the same. and like i said, unf has a relaxed rush ( so i am told) so recommendations arent necessary. i'll help you as much as i can. we can go through this together!!!

UNF may just have a few sororities, but Jacksonville is still "southern" - a rec will definitely make you stand out above the other rushees.

smiley21 08-19-2003 03:14 PM

rush is in a week. will people who want it now still be able to get it on time?

adpiucf 08-19-2003 03:24 PM

Yes, you can get recs in now. I just sent in one for UCF yesterday and their recruitment starts tonight with Greek Forum! :)

kdonline 08-19-2003 03:24 PM

If she finds a former teacher, neighbor, friend of the family or someone who actually KNOWS her, then of course.

But if she has to hunt one up from a random alumna, then getting the rec would be more difficult & probably not make it in time.

For example, if one of my former students emailed/called me today for a rec @ UNF, I'd at least call to speak with the membership chair.

smiley21 08-19-2003 03:28 PM

i sent her a pm, hopefully she will see it soon. i also gave her the email address of the panhellenic president so hopefully things will work out.

RebelSong84 08-19-2003 04:32 PM

So... who is supposed to write a rec letter if I dont know anyone who was a sister in the chapters at our school??

-kalie

adpiucf 08-19-2003 04:47 PM

Kalie,

The alum doesn't have be an alum of that particular school's chapter. In your hometown, there should be an alumnae Panhellenic. They can put you in touch with local women you can meet who will write you a rec. Or, you can go into the sorority forums on GreekChat and inquire if there is a Greek Chatter who can help you.

Good luck!

smiley21 08-20-2003 01:43 PM

kalie, clean out your pm box. i cant send you anthing

grrrrrrr. she is sending me messages but i cant respond!

JohnsDGsweethrt 08-20-2003 03:06 PM

Rebelsong I wish you the best of luck in rush and I know you'll do great! Looking forward to getting to know you better! Is this your offical rush thread!? Yippe Skippy!

RebelSong84 08-20-2003 06:15 PM

Blah

Yep. This is my "official" thread. Makes it sound all exciting and whatnot, but nothing exciting has really happened yet since rush is still a week away. It seems so far from now... but hopefully time will go by fast. Mhmm. I still have no idea what I'm going to be wearing to any of these events... but I have been reading up on the chapters so that I know whats up when it comes time for questions and stuff. Thanks everyone for the good luck's and the good advice. I will post again as soon as something at all relating to rush happens.

shopping

Ok. Today I went to the mall and bought a new skirt and shirt and some other stuff for next week. I was trying to find the perfect dress for pref night, but no luck. I don't even really know what I am looking for.. but its not at the Avenues mall that's for sure.

Tomorrow I am meeting Smiley21 and she is gonna have pity for me and show me around campus, since I am a Freshman and don't know where my classes are. Also I am going to turn in my recruitment application thing and the fee and hopefully get the ball rolling on this whole idea.

One more day!!

Ok. Tomorrow is the beginning of rush!! Im am so nervous/excited and have really been waiting for this for so long. Ahh. The schedule for this week looks like this....

Orientation- Wed Aug 27th 7pm
During orientation you will have a chance to meet the other girls going through recruitment. You will be informed of the week's events and be put into groups. Each group is led by a Pi Chi, who will be with you for the entire week to answer any questions you might have.

Ice Water Parties- Thurs Aug 28th 6pm
Ice water parties are the first opportunity for PNMs to meet the sororities and talk with all the women. You will visit each chapter this night for 25 minutes a piece.

Philanthropy Night- Fri Aug 29th 6pm
On Philanthropy night you will learn about each chapter's philanthropy and community service. Parties will last 30 minutes each. This is the first invitational round, therefore you may not be visiting all the sororities this night.

Preference Parties- Sat Aug 30th 5 pm
This final night is the night to think about each sorority on a more serious level. Chapters that invite you back this round are considering offering you a bid for membership. The chapters will be sharing a ritual type ceremony that epresses what their chapter means to them. This night you will visit each sorority by invitation only. In the event that you are invited to all three sorority pref parties, you must choose two to attend. At the end of these parties, PNM's will sign their bid cards which indicate which sorority you feel would be best suited for you.

~~~~~
I was going to use the Larry Moe and Curly as the titles for the chapters but then i got waaaaaay too into and was trying to see which group represented which guy the most, so Im gonna make it simple and use colors.
BLUE
RED
PURPLE
Well I guess thats all. i will update tomorrow night after I get home.
Orientation....
Oh my goodness! Last night was so much excitement piled into like a two hour span of time. When I got to school I went straight into the building where we were meeting. Smiley21 was behind me with this really funny girl, who I think is named margret. And the girl sitting next to me went to Bishop Kenny HS, which is were my ex-boyfriend was from so we had something in common to start conversation.
Basically they just instructed us in everything that was going to go on in the week and introduced us to all of the pi chi's. Each pi chi has this theme going on so that their group is easily recognized and they were announcing them like "taylor has cherries... and sara has hearts... and lindsey has crabs..." It was so funny for one of the sisters to say that.. definitely broke the tension. She was all "uh. I mean her theme is crabs...." :)
At one point they all sung the greek alphabet song and the sisters from ALL the chapters came into this tiny little theater and were screaming and yelling and whatnot and they REALLY made a statement. Geez.. they can get loud.. but it was really cool seeing how all the groups had bonded together. One thing I really noticed was that all three groups looked equally excited and the girls in all of them were pretty and dressed nice... at this point I am still neutral as to prefrences for the colors. G O G R E E K !
LOL. that was too much. lindsey was so red!!!! remember when that one girl was sitting by her and she said, 'lindsey is my friend, i know she is clean.' ROTFL:eek:
RebelSong84 08-28-2003 02:54 PM
:D LOL yeah that girl's name is kendal, she was my orientation team leader.. she seems so funny. all throughout orientation she was talking about greek life and stuff.. and someone would be like "so how do you schedule classes?" and her answer would be "oh, you do that online.. so, any more questions about sororities?" haha it was great!
OUlioness01 08-28-2003 03:42 PM
oh the go greek song. so much fun. i didn't know any other schools used it!
is it the one that goes "go-oh-oh greek let me hear you say go-oh-oh greek let me hear you say alpha beta gamma delta epsilon zeta eta theta iota kappa lambda mu nu xi omicron pi rho sigma tau upsilon phi chi psi omega"
every chapter but Alpha Xi sings that as the PNMs are walking through the door on Welcome day and if they do that for you i promise you will memorize the greek alphabet so easily it's not even funny. you'll also have that song inside your head for about your entire pledge period btw. :D
sounds like you had fun! i's so gald your bid day is before i leave for school permanently where i have yet to get a computer.
Ice Water Parties
Ok. Last night was so much fun! We got there and everything started around 6 o'clock. My pi chi's name is Julie and she is really cute and nice. Our theme is sponge bob square pants. haha. she bought us folders and memo pads and stuff.
The first party we went to was blue, and we were standing outside in the humidity for like 15 minutes waiting for them to get ready and stuff. All the pi chi's and the other people were being all secretive about the rooms and it was really funny. When the doors opened up, you could see inside the room and it was sooo pretty. It was definitly the best looking room. There were flowers everywhere because their theme was "garden party". They walked us to white garden-y chairs and we sat while the sisters stood behind us and talked to us while they showed their video. It was cute. And they were all really cute in their matching outfits... :) The girl that I was paired with was really nice and easy to talk to.. just small talk basically, but it was easy to make conversation. I could fit in with this group.
The second room was red. The song they sang was really "sisterly" and cute. The theme they did was really original and well set up and the slide show they had was cool. The rooms were all really hot, but we all made the most of it. I think that I liked this group the least of the three, but not by much or anything. The main thing was that I didn't really click with the girl I was talking to, and they didn't have the rotation thing down at all, so I was just with her the whole time. She asked me like 19 times if I had any questions... and I ran out of things to say. Not much common ground. So i don't think I made too good of an impression. I have heard a lot of really good things about this chapter, so Im not ruling it out. I hope I get to go back there tonight and talk to someone else.
The last chapter we saw was purple and I loved this group. The first girl I got paired with grew up in Jax (like me) and her boyfriend and my ex-boyfriend used to play baseball at BK together, so we had something to start talking about.. and she was really easy to talk to. They had this rotating thing where they would switch who your main person was.. and the second and third girls I talked to were just as cool as the first. Very talkative and funny. A girl who I hadn't met came up to me and said she recognized me from philosophy class and just wanted to say hi.. which was nice. This group is really into intramural sports and stuff which I love. Also, they all seemed so friendly with each other. I felt really included and welcome.. this was the only room that I didnt feel nervous in, I just felt like I was talking to people I already knew. It was really nice. Before rush, this was the group that I was least interested in, for superficial reasons.. but now Im really excited about going back there!
Overall, the night was really fun, but exhausting. I was tired when I got home. I had a good time though, and I love my pi chi group. I really hope some of those girls end up as my sisters. This morning my pi chi called me and told me I had been invited back, but I dont know which groups I will be visiting. Its philanthropy night and I love my outfit. So im excited. I will write more when I get home.
I didn't know other chapters, let alone other *schools* did the "Go Greek" song! I don't even remember how many times we sang that song throughout all of our Day One events :p
