The Northeast & Canada have "Blacked Out"

New York Official Says Power Grid Overloaded
29 minutes ago Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A New York State official said the Niagara Mohawk power grid overloaded on Thursday, causing a massive power outage, CNN reported, and New York Major Michael Bloomberg said it was likely a natural occurrence.

"It may be well into the evening before power comes back on," Bloomberg told the U.S. cable television network. He said smoke from a Consolidated Edison Inc. plant in the city was due to the plant's automatic shutdown, not to a fire, as had been reported.

He said, "I can tell you 100 percent sure that there is no evidence as of this moment whatsoever of any terrorism."

A massive power outage swept across swaths of the eastern United States and Canada on Thursday, leaving sections of New York, Detroit, Cleveland and Toronto without electricity, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear whether the Niagara Mohawk problem caused the wider outage.

This has been tying up the TV stations for the past few hours. They said that it was a system overload.

Scared is the key word!!

Can I tell y'all that I work on the 13th floor of our local Federal Bldg!!!! After 9/11, I'm already scared to go to work.

Around 4PM EST all of the lights in our office start flickering. Then went out!! I guess the generator kicked in after that because they stayed on.

But then, even more scary, I startedd seeing F-16's take off from the airport!! I don't know if it was routine or what but I was SHOOK!! Plus, all sorts of ambulance and fire truck sirens were going off.

Luckily, I now have power at home.

Good luck to the NYC GC'ers and all others affected.

Eastern Canada, mostly just Ontario. I have full power here (but they're about to cut away from Y&R at 3:30, dagnabit!)

on the phone with my mom who said similar to Gina at the beginning about the lights at work.

Don't forget folks on the ELEVATORS!! I would rather be in the subway than the elevator.

I don't believe that for one minute. This hasn't happened since 1965? And even still, never in this many cities. We called an electrical engineer (you know you gotta call the professionals, lol) and he said the only way that would happen is if the same power company controls power in both states. I find it hard to believe that the same power company controls power in Michigan, Ohio and New York but not PA. Let alone Canada. Unless they go by different names. I don't know. It all reeks of Dubya to me. And it is very reminiscent of the "brown outs" in Cali. We thought that was legit, too, until the Enron scandal came out. I don't know, this just all sounds iffy to me.

I am in Rochester which is an hour from Niagra Falls. Sections of the city are with out power. It is now 11:54pm and Im still with out power... Too bad the power is working at work. .
do you think I can get away with being late tomorrow??

Anywhoo from my understanding Niagra Mohawk supplies power to most of the north east. My local power company purchases its power from them. But since only one Grid overloaded these are the cities/states that were affected. When the lights went out the first thing I thought was AAAATTTTACKKKK!!! Then I heard there was speculation that the computer worm my have had something to do with this.

Same here!
I'm in the Albany area and there were large sections that were without power. I work for a newspaper so we have back up generators but even those were starting to act funny last night!
It's funny how there are so many things that we need electricity for--like gas pumps---there were cars on the side of road out of gas last night because of lack of power. Some people were stuck on elevators, traffic lights were out, TV and radio were knocked out periodically and depending on your cell phone carrier no cell phones. There was a pizza place that was giving out free food in our area because of lack of refrigeration.
I had to go out and cover funeral homes that had wakes last night during the blackout. There were quite a few that were not cancelled---the relatives were understanding even though some of them were in candlelight and no air conditioning.
We got our power back late last night.

I spoke with relatives in Detroit and they were also going through the same thing.

I know the feeling, and on my way home, thank God I made it, I saw thick dark clouds of smoke and fire which was reminiscent of 9/11 but when I got closer to it, it was just routine maintenance that the oil refineries do when they burn off oil.

I couldn't imagine being stuck on the subway for 2-3 hours, not knowing what's going on, and having to walk through the pitch dark tunnels with poor air quality, to get to safety. Thank God that everyone made it out alive and safely.

I will say this, I work for a very large utility in PA, and even though way down deep in my gutt, I think this is linked to terrorism, all utilities can be linked. What it is is, they are all on the same interconnect. Like for where I am in PA, our interconnect is PJM, which is PA,NJ,MD. The part of Jersey is south Jersey, where as north Jersey is on that interconnect with NY.

Oddly enough the state of TX has it's own....now why is that when it's not as large as the state of Cali, is it because of the "Bush" people that use to run that state?

I can say this, if you are on an interconnect, and the substaion, or plant does go out due to fire, or flooding, everyone on that interconnect will be without power. What I don't understand is......how did this happen? I mean our PJM interconnect is monitored like crazy. So you know we here in the southeastern part of PA were put on alert right after all this happened.

Finally the Power is Back! The Millions and Millions of the Sphinxpoets Fans are back as well.

MsVee1980 08-16-2003 12:20 AM

Our power just came back on. But just as it did, some crazy abducted a 14-year old girl, so now we have an Amber Alert to worry about.

Diva_01 08-16-2003 09:39 PM

Power is on...

As it was, I was trying to catch a flick, SWAT, when the power went out. I am in Toledo, and most of our lights were out and power was out all over the city. I'm just glad I wasn't at Cedar Point on a ride...
