Txsurfinwaves Rush

Hi girls!

Im new to GC..and will be going through recruitment at the University of North Texas. We have six sororities there:

Alpha Delta Phi
Zeta Tau Alpha
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Chi Omega
Alpha Pi

Since I know you guys like rush stories, I'll make sure to keep ya'll updated. Rush starts August 19, and ends August 24. :D

Antoher question however : I will be having a biopsy to see if one of my moles is indeed melanoma on August 29, and will be missing a day of school(this is the day before our 3 day weekend). If I do accept a bid and become a pledge, and if there is a sorority function that weekend that is mandatory, and I obviously cant be there, how bad would that be..or how much trouble would I be in? (ie fines). Should I just explain that I have to go 5 hours back to Houston to have surgery and that my doctor wants to do it as soon as possible- and thats the only day I can do it?

Thanks for any help!

33girl 08-14-2003 04:40 PM

I would think that for a BIOPSY you shouldn't get any sort of fine!!! Fines are mainly for if you just blow things off or don't have a valid excuse.

I thought so too. Sometimes, however, you never know! So i figured I would ask. :)

Hey! I just want to wish you a wonderful, fun, and happy rush! One of my friends from hs was a Kappa at UNT-and she loved it!! I can't wait to read your story!

AGDLynn 08-14-2003 06:08 PM

Have fun! I hope that being Greek no matter the organization will always be a wonderful experience!

radioZTA 08-14-2003 06:23 PM

I had a melanoma scare last year so I have some idea of what you're going through and my thoughts are with you.

Try to enjoy the week the best you can, find the home that is right for you and above all, take care of yourself! Your new sisters will be more concerned about your health than whether you can attend an event so don't worry about that.

Best wishes!

SATX*APhi 08-14-2003 06:23 PM

Best of luck! I hope you find your home. :)

ZTAMich 08-14-2003 08:33 PM

I think I may have met some Zetas from UNT at our Convention last year. Best of luck to you! I know we all can't wait to read your story!!!

breathesgelatin 08-14-2003 08:50 PM

Health reasons are a valid excuse for missing an event--plus, in Pi Beta Phi, we don't fine our new members. I don't know about other groups....

Anyway, good luck, and I'll add you to the long list of "Who's rushing in the fall???"

bsp-mich24 08-14-2003 09:04 PM

Hi Txsurfinwaves,

Welcome to GC and good luck going thru rush. :D

Having surgery to check out a mole for melanoma is important and like the others have said that health reasons are valid excused attendance & not a reason to fine a sister.

I'm sure they will understand & that everything will work out for you. :)

honeychile 08-14-2003 11:30 PM

Txsurfinwaves - I can't imagine that any sorority would fine you for a biopsy! You just enjoy your rush, and I hope you get the bid of your choice!

FWIW, I had my own melanoma scare last year (it runs in my family). Mine turned out to be a basal cell skin cancer, which still must be removed & monitored, but is a MUCH better alternative! Hope you're as lucky!

mmcat 08-14-2003 11:35 PM

just relax...have fun...
and don't worry if you have to go get checked....they are already with you.
good luck.

APhiRattlerGal 08-17-2003 04:31 PM

Ooh, we have an Alpha Phi Chapter at UNT!! YAY! best of luck!

Ciao-

ive been moving in and such- and THANK ALL of you for your support!

Rush starts in two days....scary! Ive already met some people who are greek..so it should be interesting.

pinkyphimu 08-18-2003 12:27 AM

good luck!!! don't worry about missing events that weekend! there are NO mandatory events that you won't be excused from!

breathesgelatin 08-18-2003 12:27 AM

YAY! I'm so excited to hear about a Texas rush--get moved in real well and rest up for Tuesday!

Buttonz 08-18-2003 12:49 AM

Good luck with rush!

Txsurfinwaves 08-18-2003 07:51 AM

Hey girls-

One more day until orientation for rush- get excited!

I moved in, and met my roommate- she is totally anti-sorority, anti-footbal, anti-social...its going to be hard. I have some girls I can hang out with...and I'll try to get along with my roommate. I just have a very strong personality, very bubbly, and she doesnt talk at all! Im kinda glad she wont be here until the night of rush...but after telling her i go to church every sunday and I'm rushing, she looked at me in disgust. HELP!

mmcat 08-18-2003 08:00 AM

consider that in a week you could have a whole new crew to hang out with.
have a good time, think positive and the roomate is just a speed bump in the road.

Well, we'll just have to do a group hug & hope you have a whole new set of friends by the end of rush! http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/hugs2.gifhttp://superbabies.homestead.com/files/grouphug.gif

MSKKG 08-18-2003 09:01 AM

My thoughts exactly, honeychile!

Txsurfinwaves 08-18-2003 09:03 AM

aww...thanks guys. I hope so too.

I try not to be judgemental..and i hope i didnt come off like that. She just looked at me indisgust and her mom laughed at me. made me feel REAL good. I have morning classes and she has afternoon classes- and if i make sorority, ill be doing that.

Txsurfinwaves 08-18-2003 09:12 AM

i made a mistake...yikes.

rush runs through the 23rd of August, not the 24th.

EtaPhiZTA 08-18-2003 09:15 AM

Yay! That means we will know where you find a home one day earlier!!!!

Txsurfinwaves 08-18-2003 09:53 AM

I decided when i rush, ill code name the sororites by beaches (i love surfing)..i thought it was creative at least.

LouisaMay 08-18-2003 09:56 AM

Roommate advice: BE PLEASANT AT ALL COSTS!! Roommates are not for a life time. In less than a year, she will be out of your hair (if you don't become friends in the mean time). The best thing to do it always be sweet and cheerful around her. If you allow her to get you down, you'll just have a miserable year. If you keep a smile on your face, you'll at least have a tolerable term.
I couldn't stand my first year roommate, so I made friends with a girl across the hall. Oddly enough, my first year roommate became my apartment-mate during my senior year, and we became great friends!

Good luck! Soon you'll have a whole bunch of life-long sisters:D

Last year, my roommate literaly scared me. I thought for sure she was going to end up arrested or die of an overdose within the first week. I kept an open mind about her though and we quickly became really good friends. She is how I met my roomies for this year, although they are really nothing like her, they are a bunch of sweet girls. Just keep an open mind. You should know for sure within the first 2 weeks if you are going to get along or if you are going to want to run and hide. I know my sister has had some really bad ones. EEK!! In that case, just try to be out of the room as much as possible. Good luck!!:) Have fun with rush!!

33girl 08-18-2003 10:20 AM

if your roomie gets worse, ask to be moved to another room...there are usually enough roomie screwups at the beginning of the year that people are happy to move. It just sounds like she's a big bump on a log though, so do what you would normally do to a bump on a log and ignore it.

SDTSarah 08-18-2003 01:59 PM

Your roommate might just be scared or nervous about starting school, too. Some people have different ways of dealing with stress. Just be sweet...she might warm up. And if she's a total nightmare, you can always change rooms.

aephi alum 08-18-2003 06:05 PM

Best of luck... :)

SmartBlondeGPhB 08-18-2003 06:13 PM

My freshman room mate talked in her sleep, in a FOREIGN language that I had never even heard of at that time. The first time she did it, she sat straight up in bed and started rattling stuff off. Scared me to death....

We were definitely nothing a like. BUT, we both survived the year.......

Txsurfinwaves 08-19-2003 02:40 PM

talked to my Rho Gamma today...her name is Leslie and shes really sweet and nice.

Tonight is orientation, then we have 1st round, philanthropy day, pref night, and then Saturday is Bid day!

I will try to update every night!:D

breathesgelatin 08-19-2003 02:49 PM

Good luck girl! Get excited!! :)

Txsurfinwaves 08-19-2003 10:29 PM

hey girls-

went to orientation tonight, and was very impressed how all of the UNT girls presented themselves. I got loads of information and I am now so excited about rushing...its unbelievable...!!! We have the 6 45 minute parties tommorrow, with a luau at the end. I'll post tommorrow and thruoght SAturday until bid day...sorry this is so short!

AXO_MOM_3 08-19-2003 10:39 PM

Have fun at your first round parties! Best of luck to you!

SATX*APhi 08-20-2003 05:01 PM

Yay! Have a blast and remember that we are rooting for you!! :D

Txsurfinwaves 08-20-2003 11:45 PM

Alright girls...1st round was today. WHOOP!

We had 6 45 minute parties. Since there are only 6 sororities on campus, we have pretty long parties. I decided I would code name the by places to surf and beaches and stuff...and ill reveal who is who come Saturday Night!

Ill kinda rank them in order of who i liked, and ill give an explanation of the beach and such:

North Shore : These are the most intense waves in the world. More people die here than anywhere else, and is a great place to surf. Pipe Masters are held at north shore..its the best beach to surf by far. This group was AWESOME! I have never felt more comfortable in my life. Everyone was so happy to be there and I met so many sisters...they all had something to say and said that I talked alot and kept the conversation going, whereas the girl that was rushing me said she had quiet ones all day. This is the house I liked the best, and first impressions do count! They were so fun and happy and you could really tell they were into it.

Hunington Beach : One of the best beaches in Cali, a ton of surfers go here. This one I really liked a lot also. It was a pretty close tie, and I had a great girl talk to me for the whole entire time. I had a group of 5 girls talking to me at once from this chapter...it was really neat and I felt special and loved..haha. I really liked everything I heard and liked how they interact at the school.

Myrtle Beach: Another great beach, this one on the East Coast. These girls were so peppy and fun, and made me feel right at home. They are really big into philanthropy and intramural sports, and they wanted to give me a Miss Volunteer Award just because i did so much in HS. I blushed at that... haha.

Destin beaches: I ran out of specific names to think of, but alot of the beaches in florida are pretty awesome. This group of girls were the first one I went to, and I kinda felt like i dominated the convo. I was with one other girl and just kinda took off with teh convo..i asked all the questions and she stayed pretty much silent throughout the whole thing. These girls were super nice and I felt very much at ease with all of them.

Surfside: A beach in Texas where you can catch some waves..about the only one in Texas. This group was very conservative and didnt seem too outgoing. I like to be loud and all into it, and I felt like this group might sit me in a corner if I talked too much...but I had great convos and liked these girls too.

Galveston: I was very disappointed with this group. Ive heard so many great things about them nationally, and I think that made me kind of biased. This is a very small chapter and i seemed to always be struggling for conversation with this group. It seemed like the longest 45 min. of my life. They were nice, and i got to meet most of the officers and such.

Overall, great day! Im so impressed with the greek system at UNT..they try to make a spot for everyone who rushes. Ill post tommorrow after 7 with which ones invited me back...I can only go to 4. Pref I can only go to 2...then tis BID DAY! WHOOP

Txsurfinwaves 08-20-2003 11:46 PM

thats 7 AM..for all of you rush addicts.

breathesgelatin 08-20-2003 11:46 PM

Good luck!! I love your bubbly recount! :) Your personality really comes through!

pinkyphimu 08-20-2003 11:49 PM

sounds like day one was great! i love the beaches theme btw! beaches are my favorite places on earth!
