Question-UNC Chapel Hill
Does anyone know ANYTHING about rush at UNC? A "Mom" called-her daughter starts school the 20th I think, and is going through rush. She knows NOTHING about the system. Is it a competative atmosphere? She did send in some recs because all the LSU girls did, but didn't have one for all the chapters. Will this hurt her?
Anyone have some info I can pass to her? She thinks it will be like all southern rushes. Is that true? |
JAM - did you do a search?!?! ;) Just kidding!
Actually, CarolinaCutie is a Phi Mu at UNC Chapel Hill and I'm sure you remember her rush thread from last year. Shoot her a PM! |
Bless your heart! I forgot about her rush thread!!!! I'm going to get the "Mom" to read that first! THANKS SOOOOOOOO MUCH!
|
Actually, ladies, I believe CarolinaCutie is a Phi Mu at the University of North Carolina-GREENSBORO. UNC-Chapel Hill, from all I know of it, does indeed have a highly competitive southern rush, although not to the extent of UGa, LSU, etc. I know a few girls there--a Pi Phi from my county and a DZ also. The Pi Phi girl is a leg and is the type I know was groomed for rush--a debutante, etc. The DZ is SUPER-intelligent (chose UNC over Harvard!), but is a first-generation American (her parents were Indian immigrants--trying to escape an arranged marriage to other people! Isn't it romantic?!?!) and not at all the "southern belle" type. My impression is that certain groups are "stereotypical southern" and others are more diverse and open.

JAM - I pm'ed you!
|
Oops! You are right, breathesgelatin! I searched for her rush thread and only looked for the words Chapel Hill! I neglected to notice it said transferred from there! Sorry! :o
|
Here is the link for the UNC-Chapel Hill Panhellenic site
http://greeks.unc.edu/join/panhellenic/index.html There's even a stats page regarding recruitment. The groups currently on campus are: Alpha Chi Omega Alpha Delta Pi Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Pi Beta Phi Sigma Sigma Sigma Zeta Tau Alpha Hope that helps! |

Thank you ladies, I will be sure to direct her to this info.
UH-OH, I don't remember my handshake either. I've even forgotten some of their names, but I can see each face clearly and remember something unique about all of them. Wait a minute, the handshake just came back to me!:D |
Oh my gosh I am so sorry!!
I am sorry, I didnt mean to seem ugly. I shouldnt have repeated what they have told me. I didnt mean the whole chapter was like that or the national group, its just my friends really have an awesome time in their particular chapters.
Also- it was probably their fault that they did not enjoy them as much as they should have. I wrote the post in a hurry and I tend to go back and edit stuff and lose the meaning of what I am trying to say. I am really sorry and didn't mean anything negative about either groups. I am really embrassed. |
Hurrah, Tarheel Girl! You will have a good time, I'm sure...now we just need to get you set up with your own rush thread...muhahahah! :)
|
yay!!!! congrats on your decsion to rush!!! i wish I knew more about UNC recruitment, but I'm sure you'll be fine. Please let us know how your experience goes. There are hardly any threads with Sigma chapters, I'd really like to read one (but that's just my selfish addict attitude, look away, I'm hideous, out pressuring girls to post just to get my next fix...if only it didn't feel sooo good:p )

For everyone, a link the UNC-Chapel Hill recruitment schedule:

I have been so busy with Recruitment practice this week, I hadn't even realized that I was being talked about! ;)
Yes, I am a Phi Mu at UNC-Greensboro. But I went to Carolina my freshman year! I actually attended two or three COB events with Delta Zeta, but by that time, I was fairly certain that I was transferring. I also was close friends with two girls in high school who are now Zetas at Carolina. From what I know, the UNC Chapel Hill rush experience is competitive but not overwhelmingly so like many SEC-style rushes. I wish there was someone from UNC on the board who could give more info. I know that Phi Mu left the campus in 2001 or 2002, and Delta Zeta left this year. This would lead me to believe that their numbers are decreasing, but like I said, I don't have any complete information. It's really sad that DZ left... their house was so new and beautiful! There is tons of information on recruitment on their Panhellenic website, so that's definitely helpful. One thing for out-of-state rushees at Carolina to remember- just because the rush isn't HIGHLY competitive doesn't mean that Southern standards don't apply! If you're in this situation, please read up on the dressing and ettiquette advice offered in other Southern rush threads. |

They do have a great recruitment website. They even have the statistics from their rush for the past 10 years. They seem to usually pledge around 70% of women or more. |
Just now looking at the sorority's websites, I realized that another girl I went to high school with is now the president of Zeta Tau Alpha... how very cool!
Edit: Yeah, it was sad. I went to church in my hometown with a DZ, and she is the one who invited me to all of the COB parties. They were really great girls, a little more "down to earth" than your typical Carolina sorority girl. |
Thank you all for your responses! This is the insight that can be very helpful. :)
|
TarHeelGirl, it seems that you have a great attitude towards rush! I'm really excited to have a PNM going through at Carolina (although I am a Tar Heel born and bred, I go to school in Virginia)! Keep your great enthusiasm and outlook and be sure to keep us updated!
|
Ooooooh yes, PLEASE PLEASE give us a complete rush story. I'd love to hear it! You know that we all wish you the best of luck!
|
all the best. have a blast and keep your heart open.
|
It's my understanding that Chapel Hill makes a real effort to make sure that girls do not go bidless, if they don't drop out before pref. Good luck to you TarHeelGirl!

There are so many chapters at UNC to chose from. Where are you from in NC and what frat is your boyfriend in? I am an Alpha Phi at NCSU this year. I also have a lot of friends rushing this year at UNC (both frat and sorority) Do you know which dorm you are in?
|

But i PROMISE i will let you know where i end up!! thanks for the good wishes!
~TarHeelGirl~ |

TarHeelGirl,
Best of luck with recruitment.....I know how it is to not be the "typical" sorority girl, and looking for the bonds of sisterhood as a home away from home ~ I went to a university 2000 miles away from where I was from, and without my sorority sisters (and friends I made in the other sororities) I wouldn't have survived the four years at my school. Here's hoping that you find the perfect home for you, and we all look forward to calling you a Greek sister! polarpi |
hi everyone! i've only been through the first round of parties because, as BrownEyedGirl said, they had to break rush up over labor day weekend - however, i am SO excited about skit round! the girls have been so nice and i have had an awesome time. Today i find out which houses I got invited back to! and as far as the football game went - i did try to enjoy myself, but it's hard when your team is getting beat 37-0!!
i'll keep you all updated when things progress a little further, but i just wanted you all to know that i am loving it! ~TarHeelGirl~ |
yay! Glad you are enjoying everything!! :)
|
We're so happy you're enjoying the wonderful time of recruitment ;) (otherwise known as hell week to actives!:D ) Thanks for the update, and keep up that great positive attitude!
|
Good luck, TarHeelGirl! I totally understand that you want some privacy during rush - but I hope you let us know how it went afterwards!
Best of luck to you! |

:( Sorry that things went not-so-well this round. I admire your decision to give the two a chance since they extended one to you!
Without trying to lead you on, I want to remind you that sometimes, a group can only invite 50 women back and you were 51st. That could mean that you could still be considered in future rounds - or not. It's a possibility. Don't forget, we're all here to help you! Good luck!! |
I'm so sorry to hear what happened, TarHeelGirl. I'm not too knowledgeable with everything that goes on "behind" recruitment, but as honeychile said, you may be the 51st woman on their list and may get an invite back at a later round. I'm glad to hear that you gave the two invites a chance, and you may have made a sparkling impression on those organizations and you'll continue to go back and really find your home! I hope that if things don't work out for formal recruitment, you'll possibly think about COR or even AI after college. You have much to offer to a GLO, whether it's in college or as an alumna :)
|
Glad you gave those 2 chapters a second chance! Sorry for your disappointment :(, but good luck with your next round of invites! :)
|
I wish I had seen your thread earlier.
I'm at a school just down the road.. ;) ;) Anyways, I am SUPER glad you decided to stick it out. As far as your rec question, everyone I know at Chapel Hill who rushed/pledged a sorority had recs. The Panhel people make them out to be "optional" but unfortunately I think they are really important in distinguishing the many girls who rush. BEST OF LUCK! |
I'm so sorry, hun -- I know cuts are tough -- but I am super proud of you for giving those two chapters another chance. If you don't feel like it's where you belong, you can always not go back, but sometimes it takes chapters a couple rounds to shine and you might later find yourself at home there.
Good luck! And no matter how things turn out, please remember that you are welcome here at GC and we are behind you! |
i echo the others in saying i'm proud of you for hanging in. keep your head up and a smile on your face. give it your all, and see how things end.
