How 2 Spike Boys Hair
 

OK-my son, who is 8 years old, has decided that he wants to wear his hair in that spikey style that "all the young men" are wearing (andi showing her age).... Problem? His hair is very stubborn & will not stand up for very long. I have tried many products-the latest is the cheapest-arse gel I can find. Still, no luck.

Someone help me!!! Please!!! The kid has finally started caring about how he looks, and I want to help him out.... Do I gel it & spray it to death? What kind of products should I be using? Why do the other boys in his class still have their hair sticking up at the end of the day, and his is all dry & silly looking?

School starts in a week & we have to have this worked out before the first day of 3rd grade!!!

all i can say is tell the kid spiky hair went out yesterday the new look is bald, see what he does. Get some really heavy hold stuff. I have no idea what kind as i have not used gel in about a year.

He goes (virtually) bald for the summer--hot baseball games are just easier w/no hair...and he's darling with a buzz...alas...he wants the spike for school. Is it really "yesterday?" Damn. The poor kid's sense of style is just like his father's....

I've never spiked a guy's hair, so I don't have any advice. :( But you do have my sympathy!

But remember, your son still has time to start displaying what we call the 'supafly' gene. In third grade, I was wearing sideways ponytails and oversized t-shirts! ;)

my brother uses Special Effects Molding Wax or Power Pomade. Either way, it's like hair cement.

Two products I use:

Ice Hair Spiker - Wicked Grip. It's a water-resistant styling glue. REALLY strong hold, which is good if he has thick hair like mine. It does look 'dry' by the end of the day but the hold is still there. About $10 for a 6oz tube (you don't need to use a lot of it) at MasterCuts

What I currently use:

American Crew Styling Gel - Firm Hold. A good styling gel and I like the results of it. Seems to last for awhile if you use enough (but don't use too much). About $10 for a 15oz bottle (says 80% more free on the front).

I would recommend taking him to a professional stylist at the mall (Mastercuts, etc.) for a haircut and see what they recommend...they deal with little punks ;) like him every day and should be able to recommend something for him specifically.

I only use gel to spike my hair; either Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Styling Gel or American Crew.

So anyways I always gel my hair right after I shower so my hair is still damp, not soaking . I use a small application of gel on both hands and run it through my hair backwards (hands through my hair from my forehead back) and then I pull my hands forward over the top of my head laying down the back of my hair but leaving the bangs spiked. Just to note I hate when people have that ninety degree flip; mine is more messy bed-head look but still clean cut looking. I hope this helped; it’s hard to explain but maybe you could ask a stylist to show you how its done when he gets his back to school haircut.

when i spiked my hair i used to use regular gel, but i would use a hair dryer to make it stand up and stay up. yeah i know it is kinda girly to use a hair dryer, but it worked.
now i just got for that messy look

GPBoy spent more time on his hair than I did on mine - I'm not even kidding. He used some maximum hold Pantene Gel and would rub it all over his head when it was still wet, and pretty much do what Kevlar described.

I have a great TIGI product called "Control Freak" that is a pretty strong hold gel-goo - it might work well for him!

Try cutting his hair really really short, then use that spikerz gel that docetboy uses or another gel like LA looks SPORT gel or dippidy do and hairspray. Do it everyday and soon his hair will be trained.

It's easier for me to spike my hair cuz I'm a panda. Anywho what I do is I get my hair damp a bit but not too wet, then I put gel through it. Then I bend over and let my hair hang upside down while I smooth it out. Then after a few more seconds I right myself and I'm done and ready.

Pomade and wax is great for spikes or messy hair looks. Not, just for good hold, but it is good for people w/ naturally curly hair who wants to pull off that look. If you straighten your hair, stuff like gel or any other water based product would curl your hair back up. Oil based products pull off amazing tricks.

I use American Crew pomade and I love it, but I dont spike my hair up either. Use egg whites as hair gel, you'll get your sons hair as stiff as a rock.

Heres what you do for your 8 year old. Don't go buyin $40 bottles of hair goo to make his hair stand up. Chances are the stuff you are buying for that price is the same crap you can get for $1.49 from Wal-Mart, Walgreens or Oscoe.

I use the cheapest crap I can find, just make sure it says "Super-dooper-max-hold" and your son will be fine.

It all comes from the same vat, and into the same bottle, just with different labels.

I use the Spikerz stuff described above. The $10 bottle lasted me a year. Works great. Only gotta use a tiny bit. Just make sure the hair is slightly damp.... not dry.

You guys rock! Thanks for the advice...he has an appointment with a super-trendy stylist on Saturday (only b/c my 5 year old daughter who starts kindergarten on Monday has one, and I figured I'd just go ahead an get them both done...)...if anyone can cut it the way it needs to be cut, she can....

My little brother, who is part Mexican & has really thick/coarse hair, suggested we use the cheap dippity-doo stuff...I guess we will start with that & if it doesn't work, I will hunt down some of the other suggestions.

One last question-do you spray it after you've gelled it?

I don't spray.

My brother uses mousse right after the shower, gets dressed, then rubs in pomade on top and gel on the back and sides. When he gets it right, it all gets a few pumps of hairspray and he's all set.

I watched him doing this one day, fascinated, while I brushed my teeth. It's histerically funny.

He sprays after he's done with the "goopy stuff" to make sure it doesn't move.... He uses my Aussie mousse, some pretty pricey pomade, and Rave gel and hairspray. Apparently, "Rave" products come in teal bottles, and you can buy them at Wal*Mart. He used to use some expensive (and more masculine) hairspray and gel but he found that Rave works the best and doesn't "smell too much like a chick." (That's a direct quote...)
He buys it himself and he doesn't have much money so I'm assuming it's fairly cheap.

Btw- I think it's cute that your 3rd grader is going to have spikey hair lol.

After about 15 minutes out of the shower i put styling cream in my hair twice, then a little gel for substance. Styling cream will give the hold but the softness as opposed to using only gel.

I spray when it's humid otherwise the gel tends to give.

Spikey hair is so last year. It was in style for the past 2 1/2-3 yrs. Shorter hair is making a comeback. I do know a lot of guys who bic their heads these days.

If you still want to spike it I'd go to a salon. I tried cheap shit a couple of times, my hair just didn't spike. I'm also plagued with stupid cow licks on the front above the forehead and the back towards the top. One weekend I was being pampered by getting a pedicure, swedish massage, a mud mask and then a hair makeover. After I got over the initial fact of feeling gay, a buddy of mine went with me, it was all groovy. When it came time for the hair I told the girl that the hair gods must have it in for her, you can't do much with cow licks. Anyhow, all she really did was put some super expensive paste in it and then ran her fingers through it to mash all the paste in. After it was all mashed in...she yanked it upwards and we got spikes. It was cool. That was back when we were on our wanna be model-looking binge.

I'd go to a salon and seek professional help if want your son to be a hottie at school.

None of these guys know what they're talking about. Spiking your hair is pretty 2001 though.

To spike it, follow directions:
Buy ice gel.
Take shower and dry hair...wait a good 7 minutes until no longer wet but still slightly damp.
Rub gel into hair going forward and then going back.
Then manipulate while blowdrying at low speed to dry it.

For added kick, spray it with hair spray right after the gel and then blow dry. That'll be tough as nails.

Now this is what I recommend you do if you want your kid to be cool. Go buy fiber (amer crew and sebastian will do) or dry wax from paul mitchell. Rub a bit into your hand, then throughout your hair. You can manipulate it any way you want throughout the day and can go for the just out of bed look instead of the Eurotrash "I just coked up on a train" spikey look.

Like I said...he got his dad's sense of style (although in his fraternity boy days, the man had some taste...that's a joke, of course, but I wish he'd buy shirts that were some color other than navy... :) ).... Good thing about boys' hair--it's easy to adjust to the trends...usually pretty short no matter what you do with it

...not like women's hair which has to be beat/mutilated/spindled/tangled/flat ironed/whatevered to death...grow it out, cut it off...is there a women's "do" that doesn't take months to cultivate? OK, that's an exaggeration....

Hopefully this year, the kid'll look at what the other guys are doing and not hesitate...

WHatever happens, I'm betting he will probably end up with that just-rolled-out-of-bed look...if that's happenin' right now, he's way ahead of the curve for once.
