my dumb mouth

so this is the third canker sore i have had this month. i am not a happy person about this.

so i looked it up on the internet and it said that you can get a lot of them due to a weakened immune system and for women, right before their periods. and that eating yogurt is good.

so i have had mono (not fun) for the last couple months so that is the weakened immune system thing and i am on my miss period right now. i eat yogurt too....it's yummy.

so my question is :
HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM? well the one that i have right now but it hurts like hell and i dont know what to do.

anyone have any good remedies?

Canker sores are a form of ulcers, and I always got them in relation to stress. Obviously cutting back on stress is good, but there are some ways to alleviate the discomfort.

Kanka works pretty well but it is spendy. I found the BEST and most affordable method is a bottle of Tincture of Benzoin. You can get a large bottle at a full service drugstore or some pharmacies. You put some of the brown liquid on a cotton swab, and dot it on the canker sores. It will burn and I always teared up but it is an oral mucosal coverant. It has quite a bit of alcohol in it as well. Tincture of benzoin is the main ingredient in Kanka and similar products, but Kanka has benzocaine as well to cut the pain.

I once had 27 canker sores in my mouth, so I know how unpleasant this is.

etahannah 08-08-2003 01:32 PM

27? omg! just from being stressed? or what? i would die if i had 27. this one is on my bottom lip where the lip and gum kinda mesh together. hurts when i bite into stuff cause of where it is. pretty big too..

i am gonna see i f i can find that stuff..i am getting ready to go shopping right now.

thanks...i will let you know what happens!!

I used to get them all the time. Haven't had one in a long time now, so there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

For quick temporary relief, I used Listerine. It burned like heck when applied, too, and tastes nasty -- but it really deadened the pain in a hurry.

ZTAngel 08-08-2003 01:36 PM

I had one at the roof of my mouth once. Every time I would talk, my tongue would hit it and send a shooting pain all across my mouth. For about a week, I talked with a lisp to avoid touching my tongue to the canker sore. I just let it go away naturally.
I find that I usually get mine when I'm stressed.

GeekyPenguin 08-08-2003 01:37 PM

I get these all the time - they suck! I always get them in the corner of my lips and they hurt so much...I used to be in the band and trying to play trumpet with one was murder. I usually cover mine in Carmex and wait for it to go way.

if your sores are on the outside of your mouth then it is a cold sore. those are different! thank goodness i have never had one of those!! just those damn cankers on the INSIDE of my mouth

I get the inside ones too...usually right behind the place on my lip when I get them. I put Carmex on those too...I think I've probably eaten an entire tube of Carmex by now from doing that.

Kanka rocks for really bad sores in inconvenient places. There is also something called Glyoxide (drugstores often have a generic version for less $$) that works for the not as bad ones. If you like self-torture you can always use plain old hydrogen peroxide (with these last 2, be sure to spit them out).

Also, whiskey helps, at least it does mine. :) Stay away from ketchup and acidy things, they hurt!

i am not in to self-torture! that sounds like it would hurt soooooo much....its bad enough it hurts on its own! ew...i dont think i can do that!!

i am about to head to target/walmart and see what i can find. ew i need to find new pants for work...this outta be fun.. i might try the kanka stuff and see how that works!

Sverige 08-08-2003 02:18 PM

I've always been told it's from eating too much salt.

This can't be true...I eat an overabundance of salt and I have never had one. *knocks on wood*

Sverige 08-08-2003 02:34 PM

really? Think it might be as a result of an std? Kinda like how cold sores are a form of herpes?

*getting a little worried now*

ZTAngel 08-08-2003 02:44 PM

They're not an STD. They're not herpes. And they're not contagious.

It's just something that happens. It's caused by a system imbalance from something you ate, stress, or fatigue.

etahannah 08-08-2003 04:33 PM

well i am home. i stopped at the pharmacy to see what she thought. she said i should try putting baking soda on it first. if that doesnt work then try kanka and the other stuff...she just said at least i dont have to spend money yet. i love that part

she said it is mostly a result from me having mono. esp since i told her my eating habits havent changed.

you know..this mono thing needs to go away...causing me too many problems!!

thanks for all the advice! you guys rock!

it's not herpes....

AchtungBaby80 08-08-2003 04:58 PM

I'll tell you what really helps is Ambesol (sp?). You can buy a little bottle of it over the counter...I'm not sure what it is, but someone else mentioned brown liquid and this stuff is brown. All you do is take a Q-tip and dot it on the sore, and wham, it doesn't hurt anymore.

My sister says the best way to get rid of the sores is to scrape the white stuff off the top, which hurts like hell but makes it heal faster. I'm still skeptical, but hey, I guess it's worth a shot if you're really desperate...

etahannah 08-08-2003 05:03 PM

i dont care if scraping helps it go away or not....i cant not scrape anthing! ew...i am so cringing at the thought of scraping the sore..it hurts bad enough....i can barely touch it let alone SCRAPE it!!! ew ew ew ew ew ew ew....i appreciate your ideas but ew.....

:D :D :D

winnieb 08-08-2003 11:25 PM

I use to always get canker sores-- my dentist suggests L-lysiene. You can find it with the vitamins. The bottle will say to take 1 a day--- my dentist suggests 3pills 3 times a day. Yes, it sounds like alot--but i swear it works!!! I have told many people who also swear by it!!
Usually my canker sores will be gone after one days dose.

good luck!
wendi

qtbecks 08-08-2003 11:56 PM

I've heard that cutting a raisin in half and putting the inside side on the sore will help make it go away...something with the vitamins in it...maybe C or K? I've never tried it, but it might be worth a shot!

etahannah 08-09-2003 12:00 AM

wow...there are some many home remeadies!!! i am trying the baking soda thingy right now. it sure isnt the best tasting thing that is for sure. if it is not better, i think the vitamn L thingy might work....we'll see...i dont know

I HATE MONO!! go away and take your canker sores with you!!

***no dancing...goes to my corner to cry***

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-09-2003 12:14 AM

I'd heard it was a form of the herpes virus, too. I know at least herpes causes some form of cold sores -- I had a close girlfriend who got herpes, um, elsewhere from her boyfriend who had cold sores.

Apparently there's Herpes Simplex I and Herpes Simplex II.

And that is all I know.

aurora_borealis 08-09-2003 12:29 AM

Canker sores = Ulcers

Cold Sores = Herpes (and cold sores are not always the same kind as genital herpes)

lionlove 08-09-2003 11:22 AM

Ambesol always works for me. Hope you feel better. :)

ZTAngel 11-09-2004 11:44 AM

I'm bumping this thread so I can whine about the canker sore I have in the back of my mouth. :( It's the bottom left corner of my mouth right by my last molar. I stabbed myself there with my toothbrush last night and I almost cried.

I get these when I'm stressed. I also break out when I'm stressed so I'm dealing with that, too. Good fun!

**To repeat, canker sores are not the same thing as herpes. They are not even remotely similar. Herpes is a virus. Canker sores are an ulcer that form because your own immune system decides to attack your mouth. Some people are more prone to getting them than others because of genetics. Canker sores are not an STD.**

gargle with salt and water. it will hurt like a biatch, but it helps. i have one now and its going away.

AOTTAdvisor 11-09-2004 02:30 PM

I can so relate to this thread--I get AWFUL canker sores!!
They are stress induced(so around finals, I am in massive amounts of pain) and there is a prescription strenth salve your dentist can prescribe that works GREAT! Its kind of grainy and you put it right on the sore and it burns like a bitch for about a second and then goes numb and is gone in like a day or 2.
If you really care, it technically eats the infection out from the inside. I HIGHLY reccomend it if you get them all the time--I have a order for it always on standby at CVS!

amgn253 11-09-2004 08:19 PM

I hate canker sores. My freshman year I had canker sores in my throat. The doctor said he counted about 5 of them. I couldn't talk or eat. I could barely open my mouth. I lived on protein drinks and ice cream. The ice cream really felt good on my throat. The doctor said I could gargle with warm salt water or hydrogen-peroxide mixed with mouthwash. I was too afraid of accidentally swallowing the H-P, so I used the warm salt water. After a few days, I was as good as new.

goldendelta 11-09-2004 11:00 PM

I used to get canker sores all them time. I started using Listerine and haven't has as many.

Peaches-n-Cream 11-09-2004 11:09 PM

I used to get them all the time also especially when I was run down and getting sick. I found that rinsing with warm salt water helped, but not as much as Anbesol. That stuff is good. I haven't had one in a few years. Of course now that I mention it, I'll get one.
