Not Really. Reagan was a very successful actor who became California Governor and ran for President, where was the best president in the past 30 years.

Maybe Scwarz would of followed in his footsteps......

Peaches-n-Cream 08-06-2003 09:52 PM

I just saw this on CNN breaking news. It could be interesting.

Tom Earp 08-06-2003 10:01 PM

Hell maybe ARRNOLD can turn humpty dumpty land around!:(

Cal. for the first time lost population in History! DAH!

This maybe the reason people only know Holly Weird!

He could go before the Legislature and say I will KIIck YOUR ASSES!!

Ronnie was a Grade B actor who played the role of Pres!

God, Give Me Harry Truman my brother but dont know if he would want to get into the mess we are in?

Huh, surprised Maria would let him run!:( Well always a Kennedy!

OrigamiTulip 08-06-2003 10:15 PM

It's a sad thought, but actors are probably the most qualified to hold high-level offices these days.

phikappapsiman 08-06-2003 11:24 PM

I personally am very sad for California these days...:(

This state is a joke! While I am not a Gray Davis fan, he WAS elected by the people of California, and he has not, to my knowledge, broken any laws, so he should be allowed to serve his term. Whoever becomes governor will still have the same problems that Gray faces, so really, what is there to gain??? Do Republicans really think that by having a Republican governor that it will make it easier for George W. in 2004 in California??? It has become a circus, so why not have an actor with NO experience in government as the chief executive officer of the 5th largest ecomony in the world. Hell, why not Larry Flynt or Gary Coleman-they are both running as well! Not to mention that this travesty of an election will cost the state over 36 million dollars!

I agree with you...and I must say, I am sooooooo glad I do not now nor will I EVER live in Cali!

mmcat 08-07-2003 12:10 AM

he'll probably be elected...
well, it can't be any worse than where they are.
good luck to him.

steelepike 08-07-2003 12:11 AM

This is so great!

I love America where this kind of stuff happens. Not that i think he will make a great Governor nor do i think he will make a poor one, its just the idea thats awesome. Some day when i am famous...

just to remind yall, reagan was governor or cali after he was an actor, look at what he ended up doing

DeltAlum 08-07-2003 12:32 AM

"You vill vote for me or I tear your arm off and shove it up your...earlobe"

Seriously, though. I can't remember my Civics (Principles of Democracy) class from high school, but I think that you have to be a native born American Citizen to be President. May be the only job with that qualification.

Don't think Arnie is.

Anybody know if I'm right about either of those? It's been a long time since I took those classes.

Edited to answer my own question, here's info from one of the online encyclopedias:

"Constitutional Provisions

The members of the Constitutional Convention settled for a single chief executive, chosen not by Congress but by a special body, the ELECTORAL COLLEGE. The president was to serve for four years, with indefinite eligibility for reelection to the office. The president must be a "natural born Citizen" and at least 35 years old."

The part about "indefinite eligibility" for reelection was changed after FDR, I think.

kappaloo 08-07-2003 12:56 AM

Why must you be born in the US to be president? Any particular reason?

Just curious.....

The only real answer is that The Constitution says so.

I suspect that in the days of the Constitutional Convention, having defeated the British, but still having major issues with powers like France and England, the founders were being protective.

But, even I'm not that old, I wasn't there, so I don't know for sure.

You might ask Tom Earp.

docetboy 08-07-2003 01:10 AM

Just a little clause in the U.S. Constitution :)

Yeah. That's what I meant to say.

lifesaver 08-07-2003 01:20 AM

Yeah, I had to call bullshit when they were showing Bob Hope clips of him being interviewed by Larry King in 1990 last week or so (after his death). LK asked him about running for office and he said some stuff about Jack Valenti or some other old actor from back in the day and a group of them trying to get him to run for president. His response to them was that he really wasnt that interested in the job. Had Bob paid attention in school, he might have known that you had to be a natural born citizen of the US to be president and wouldnt have let the 65,000 or so Political Sci. majors out there in TV land know he had no idea what he was talking about because Bob Hope, was born Leslie Townes Hope in 1903 in London, England to Brittish parents.

moe.ron 08-07-2003 06:47 AM

Partial list of those running for governor

Arnie "It's no a tumor" Schwazanegar 9sp?)

Larry "Smut Paddler that Care" Flynt

A porno star

Gary "What cha talking bout Willis" Coleman

I think they should debate. I'll pay $2 to see it.

mmcat 08-07-2003 07:04 AM

agreed....it's apparent the circus has come to california.

moe.ron 08-07-2003 07:46 AM

Here's a reason why I think Arnie shouldn't run for governor of California. He's actually a machine sent from the future to protect John Conner. I don't think that people from the future should be allowed to run for office. They would know too much.

You're wrong. He's really Douglas Quaid, a Mars operative who had his memory erased and implanted with a new one in order to "protect meltdown". He was in implanted as being married to Sharon Stone.

MoonStar17 08-07-2003 08:59 AM

isnt he running against : Larry Flint and Gary Coleman???

Seriously I find this kinda hillarious...
He actually uses the line..."I'll be back..." when he ends...OMG..

whatever I am kinda glad I don't live in California...

But as with everything...to each his own...

The1calledTKE 08-07-2003 10:02 AM

Arnold probably will win on his name alone even though he has never held a political office before that. Regan did hold other offices before he was governor. If Grey can't win go Larry Flint. If Arnold wins least he will have a die hard democrat wife. Maybe she can pull some influence.

sigmagrrl 08-07-2003 11:18 AM

He's already a colossal joke to me b/c he's used both the line from the Hans and Franz skits from SNL ("Pump (clap) YOU up") and the Terminator movie ("I'll be back") in his speeches/blurbs so far....This election better happen soon or else he'll run out of movie lines to quote! He's just a caricature of all the roles he's played...WTF does he really have to offer as a candidate?

33girl 08-07-2003 11:26 AM

Re the recall...

sorry if I'm late jumping on this train, but does Cali have a special law that allows them to do the recall, or can it be done in any state?

AXPGoBot 08-07-2003 11:30 AM

Actually, I hear that good ol' Arnie is pretty involved in politics, although he's never held an office. One other thing I've heard about him is that he's a pretty hardcore republican (one of the few actors that actually is), which makes me happy :D .

Also... as far as being elected president goes... it's a real shame that we couldn't change the law so that he could get into office there too... I mean... come on... what country would have the balls to f**k w/ America if we had Arnold leading the army? I can just imagine the Bin Ladens and Saddams of the world sh*tting themselves during his addresses.

kddani 08-07-2003 11:32 AM

But Sheila- we don't have any famous celebs to run for gov if we kick out Rendell!

Who could run? Christina Aguilera? Kobe Bryant? (he's from Philly, right?).

Hehe, how about Mario Lemieux?

This whole situation sounds like a joke set up.....
"Arnold, Gary Coleman (whatchu talkin about, constituents?) , and Larry Flynt were running for governor....."

AXPGoBot 08-07-2003 11:42 AM

another candidate emerges

I heard on the radio this morning that there is a 17-year old running too... any truth to this?

I mean, hell, I might as well run. Anybody out there that would vote for me?

MoonStar17 08-07-2003 12:09 PM

If they debate I can see it turing into some "must-see-TV" debate...similar to a reality show....who will be "voted" off next...tune in next time....LOL

then again i shouldn't talk...Im from Florida...where we apparently dont know HOW to vote ;) lol just cracking fun at my own state....after that whole incident i sat at home wondering...was I one of those lame brains who filled out the ballot wrong? ???

greeklawgirl 08-07-2003 12:40 PM

That's it, dammit!

Between the Terminator, Larry Flynt, Gary Coleman and Angelyne, I couldn't possibly do any worse than the rest of them. So I'm hereby declaring my candidacy: greeklawgirl for Governor of California in 2003.

Now all I need is $3500 and 65 signatures to officially sign up. Who's interested in helping me run my campaign?

;) :p :)

Kristin AGD 08-07-2003 12:50 PM

I am joining greeklawgirls campaign committee. I need to make a trip to sac anyway. :D

Don't know when I coming out there. But my sister has been giving me grief for not visiting yet. Her husband has been stationed at Beale AFB for two years now, and he gets deployed for three or more months at a time. So I need to get out there soon. :D

I think we can get 65 signatures for greeklawgirl with no problem. I know a group of girls.... ;)

mu_agd 08-07-2003 01:00 PM

greeklawgirl ~ you've got my signature!!

I watched one of those Bob Hope specials many years ago. He had a skit about running for President of the United States. It ended with someone telling him he couldn't be the President because he was not born in the United States. It was funny. :)

Jack Valenti might have wanted Bob Hope to run for President of the Motion Picture Association of America which is the job JV holds now.

I for one am relieved that there is a clause in the Constitution saying that one must be native born in order to run for President. I would not want Arnold Schwarzenegger in the White House. :p

Hey at least people in CA don't cause presidential voting controversy, and our future governor Arnold doesn't have a daughter with a drug habit. :)

GeekyPenguin 08-07-2003 03:08 PM

I hope he wins.

Yep, that's right, I just said I hope a Republican wins. We need as many Republican assclowns in office as possible before 2004 so that we can embarasss BuddyBoy in the White House.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you there. That's the first thing I said when I heard Arnie's speech. Did anyone else notice that he can't even pronounce California? When he says it, it sounds like a cross between California and cauliflower. And it was just in poor taste to end the press conference with "I'll be back."

I heard that Gallagher (as in Sledge-O-Matic) is also running. Leave it to California to have several has-been celebrities from the 80's running for governor.

Munchkin03 08-07-2003 05:49 PM

If Arnold wins, then the heat of having stupid people voting will be officially shifted from Florida to California. Woo hoo! :p
