Pumpkin the movie, any good?

Hey everyone,
A friend of mine was telling me about a new movie that is out now on DVD called Pumpkin. Christina Ricci (I love her!) is a sorority girl who some how ends up working w/challenged athletes and she falls for this guy named Pumpkin. Thats all she told me about it but she said it was really good and funny. I asked her about the sorority stuff in it, but she didn't really know how to answer a lot of it b/c she is a GDI. So I was wondering if anyone else saw it and if it portrayed sororities well and there were any real life or loosely based glo's in it?

KappaKittyCat 08-05-2003 12:22 PM

It's an interesting movie and definitely worth a watch, but I'd say that they make all sorority girls but Christina Ricci come off as shallow ditzes.

MTSUGURL 08-05-2003 12:50 PM

Just don't watch it if you're easily offended. It is meant mainly to be a satire, so they're not too worried about portraying Greek life accurately.

Lil' Hannah 08-05-2003 01:41 PM

blech, I thought it was horrible. Not the portrayal really, but the movie itself.

Sistermadly 08-05-2003 01:41 PM

Bad. Bad, bad, BAD.

PiKA2001 08-06-2003 12:02 PM

I thought that this was one of the funniest movies I've seen all year!

etahannah 08-06-2003 12:17 PM

this was a horrible movie!! ugh!! i just sat there and laughed at how dumb it was!!

Exactly! It was a hilarious movie. My rommate couldnt understand what I found so funny either, he thought I was laughing at Pumpkin.

CarolinaCutie 08-06-2003 12:27 PM

Don't watch this movie. Really.

I watched this movie with two of my non-Greek friends, and we were all just like WTF. I knew going into it that it wasn't going to be a light and funny comedy, but still... this movie is just not good. It's not even entertaining.

Although every now and then I still sing "Stars of track and field, they are.... beautiful people" in my head. What an awful song in an awful movie! haha

MTSUGURL 08-06-2003 12:39 PM

I thought it was a very strange movie, and I thought it was fairly entertaining, but I have a very sarcastic sense of humor. I don't think this is a movie that you're supposed to come away from saying, Öhmigod, I LOVE this movie! It's the best movie I've ever seen!" If it were, I don't think Christina Ricci would have done it. I think it is a movie that fully intends to poke fun at a part of our culture. I hated the ending though - it's like they wanted to try and end it on a "everyone lived happily ever after" note, and it's not that kind of movie.

Dolphingirl14 08-06-2003 01:14 PM

I personally liked the movie. it's a little on the strange side but it's a good movie to see if you like movies like that. If you're easily offended, don't see the movie. It doesn't really portray greeks that well but it's still a funny movie.

Glitter650 08-07-2003 03:55 AM

I was disturbed by this movie when I watched it... not only because of the *WAAAYYY* shallow depection of sorority girls... but I don't know although it does bring up an interesting issue about the disabled sexuality, I thought to do it under the guise of dark comedy was just disturbing

Ginger 09-22-2003 01:49 PM

I finally saw this movie last night.... bizarre.

Though I laughed my *** off at the very first scene when they're all like "Suzy - YES! Anne Chung - Yes! Carolyn - Yes!"

White_Chocolate 09-22-2003 02:33 PM

i saw it
i didn't like it
i just felt like she was using that poor boy as rebound
and it just sucks the way that it ended

the only funny part was when they were talking about the girls
and they pointed out the black girl would fufil the diversity requirement
some sororities are like that though
give them one asian, black, and hispanic and they think they are so diverse

get a grip

amycat412 09-22-2003 04:19 PM

Ugh, I hated it.

FYI- her sorority house is the ADPi house at USC. Across the street, the tri Kappas or whoever they were, that's the AXO house.

Tri Omegas, I think it was.

KuThetaChi 09-23-2003 07:57 AM

I loved it, went right out and bought it. Its a funny, odd movie... not meant to be accurate. It is better in my eyes than Fraternity/Sorority Life where it is inaccurate but people take it as accurate (I doubt anyone takes Pumpkin as accurate)

Lady Pi Phi 09-30-2003 06:39 PM

I'm watching the movie right now. I think it's awful. The acting is bad, the scropt is bad. It's just bad. I expect a little more from Christina Ricci and I wonder what she was thinking when she made this movie.

Shine 10-01-2003 03:21 AM

I thought it was brilliant.

It's sad how few people understand and appreciate independent film.

My not liking this movie has nothing to do with a lack of appreciation for independent film. I rather enjoy independent film and find it a nice change from the formulaic drivel that Hollywood spits out.
I understood the stroy. It was just poorly made.

KuThetaChi 10-01-2003 07:26 AM

But did you understand that it was meant to be a Satire? Its not meant to be taken literally on any level. Due to it being a satire its also isn't supposed to be a detailed real life description. I think if you don't read it on the other levels and only take face value it will come off as not nearly as good!! But opinions are just that...opinions

33girl 10-01-2003 10:35 AM

If you can't tell it's a satire, it's probably not a very good satire.

"Network" is an example of good satire.

CarolinaCutie 10-01-2003 10:45 AM

Aren't satires supposed to be funny? Yeah, I got the fact that it was a satire. That doesn't make it a GOOD satire.

KuThetaChi 10-01-2003 01:24 PM

I wasn't trying to be rude, its just I have had friends watch and think it was meant to be taken at face value and even when I look at it from that perspective its dumb. I mean going off a cliff blowing up your car and then being completely unburned and able to blame your girlfriend? Exactly. However as much as some people want to say its completely stereotyped, I don't think from watching the sorority girls on campus its as far off as some have said. I found it funny....

Lady Pi Phi 10-01-2003 03:52 PM

I understand it;s supposed to be a satire. It's just not very good.
I get the movie. I just thought it was a poorly done movie. And that's my opinion.

CatStarESP4 10-02-2003 04:42 AM

I saw a little bit of the movie and it freaked me out. I guess I would have see it in its entirity to judge it a little better.

seriously, there is a real tri kappa sorority in indiana (i think that is where it is). why?? why would you name your org something that can always be the target of jokes? specifically...the KKK:o

33girl 10-02-2003 04:06 PM

There is a Tri-Kappa fraternity at Dartmouth. It predates the Ku Klux Klan by at least 100 years...it may be the same for this sorority.

AlphaPhiBubbles 10-02-2003 04:25 PM

are fraternities and sororities allowed to have the same GLO name? i.e. KKK Is it only large GLOs that actually copyright their name that have the priviledge of not allowing others to use it? Just curious cuz people were saying there were both a sorority and a fraternity named KKK...

If it's a local, they often don't know there is another group named that. Remember a lot of these were founded before you could put a name into the internet and search for duplicates. I guess it all depends on whether you want to expand or not. I know there are like 4 different local sororities called Alpha Sigma that have nothing to do with each other.

There's also two local Kappa Alpha Sigmas across the country that somehow thought they were the same. (They aren't.) I think my favorite local story is one I heard from a SigEp - there's apparently a local sorority in the east called Sigma Phi Epsilon that's older than them or didn't know about them or some such nonsense - I thought it was really cute!

Glitter650 10-03-2003 04:03 PM

I think it's more of a dark comedy than a true satire... even understanding that it's not meant to be taken at face value doesn't make it any less disturbing to me...

AXWhoah 10-03-2003 04:48 PM

AH HA! I knew that the tri omega house was the Alpha Chi house....I noticed a red carnation on the stained glass door and I was like hmmm....
