Well my favorite boy name is
William C. Joseph-Marion
(sorry that's my son...he had to be first http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif)

But the thing I love about his name is that ist has a meaning. He is named after his Maternal Grandmother Grandfather and Great-grandfather.

AKAtude 08-04-2000 01:29 PM

There are so many names that I like and I've noticed a few already listed. However, I just want to pick names that my children will be able to pronounce and spell.

snazzylady 08-05-2000 09:35 PM

Soror AKAtude you are so right we need names that our children can pronounce and spell.
There is nothing wrong with unique names (my daughter has one) but we need to think about the future.
I know a child named Yuhora pronounced U-ho-ra now, what kind of name is that? I would hate having to call her name everyday.

Sonia Bronson 08-05-2000 09:44 PM

I've always been partial to
Sara Chenell (I like this name because Sara is a good Christian name and Chenell is my favorite cousin in the whole world).

Aja (pronounced Asia) Steely Dan had an album title of the same name and spelling and I've loved the name for over twenty years. If I ever do have children this will be the name I give her.

I would like to name my son Matthew (another good Christian name).

CkretCrush8 11-22-2001 08:38 AM

Well since I am a mommie to be (about 9 weeks till baby day)(I know I posted this before but I am excited!!)

I thought I would throw in my baby's name:

The DR. says it's a girl so her name will be
Cydney Ari

Now just in case it happens to be a boy:
Jayce Quenton

;) :D

Steeltrap 12-02-2001 01:19 PM

I'm prone to classic names. I just think that we must stop giving our kids names that could trigger a resume being thrown in the circular file when they get into the job market.

For females, I like:

Laurel
Sophie
Madeline
Celeste
Cecile
Alexandra
Heather
Carolina
Alison

Boys I really haven't given a lot of thought to.

Poplife 12-03-2001 12:55 AM

Well...

I can tell you what's not cute:

1. Naming your child after a city, state, or country (with the exception of places that are named after people or based off of a real name...like Alexandria or Victoria).

*I have a personal biased against this because many porn stars have names that are also countries. Please don't ask how I came across that fact... :D

2. Naming your child after a body part.

3. Naming your child after drink (with the exception of 'Brandy').

4. Naming your child after a fabric or other material/substance.

5. Naming your child after a brand of clothing (even if it IS already a person's name like Ralph Lauren or Michael Kors)!

6. Naming your child after a car (with the exception of Porsche).

7. Naming your child after a day, time, or number.

8. Naming your child something that is associated with a negative person or occurrence.

9. Naming your child after a dance style.

Naming a child is difficult because their name might not suit them in adulthood. Plus, certain names are associated with certain types of people. Some names conjure certain thoughts and stereotypes in people's minds.

If you were looking for a lawyer and I recommended a woman named Chyna and a woman named Ruth, which woman would you call first?

Would you rather go on a blind date with a guy named Todd or a guy named Shemar?

What picture does the named 'Dawn' bring?

What about 'Greta'?

David and Sherman. Who's the wimp, who's the he-man?

Where does someone named Shakila come from? Some people think 'ghetto', others think 'Arab'.

Just a thought...

I don't mind to offend anyone with my comments, but you know how I am. And I didn't say there were no exceptions to each one of my comments. Ciao!

THANK YOU!!! I agree COMPLETELY with you. I don't have a problem with people being creative with their child's name...it burns me when they do so THOUGHTLESSLY without considering the consequences. I don't have a problem with unusual names, as long as there is a reason, a thought process behind the selection that you can tell your kid why you picked the name you did. As someone with a unusual first name, I can tell you from experience that it's disappointing being told by your parents that your first name was just a whim of letters. (My middle name, Chanel, was from the French designer of the same name). I'd rather have a common name and be told that I was named for someone that was admired/loved/noteworthy than have a name that was just conjured up on a whim.

My first name is completely made-up. It's unusual, but not all that bad...at least in India, where it means "star." :D (my parents never knew that...I found that out when an Indian coworker told me last year) Some of my very good friends have confessed to me that when they first heard my first name, they immediately assumed I was ghetto. Luckily, they got to find out the REAL Ladyjag, but I sometimes wonder about those folks with more unusual names than mine. It's hard enough to be black and discriminated against without giving people a reason to discriminate us BEFORE they even meet us.

A lot of the names mentioned on this thread sound beautiful, but is there a purpose to them? Are they names of people you admire/respect/love (relatives or not)? Do their names mean something significant to you or translate into something in another language? Is there a specific reason why you selected it? You need to be able to answer that question, but one day your children WILL ask where their names came from...please have something better than "I just liked the way the letters looked together." That worked in Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon" but I doubt your kids will see it that way. :)

Just my $19.13

lil_sunshine 12-03-2001 08:07 PM

I have a bunch of baby names that I love, but I know I won't be using most of them b/c I don't plan to have this many kids in this lifetime (or any lifetimes afterward), but here they go...(beware that they all have three names)

1. Anica Natelle Delicia
2. Devin Diamante Tiara
3. Diamante Teanna Elise
4. Imani Nia Mecca
5. Iyesha Mecca Elisha
6. Lynee' Nicole Shelique (part of my first name, my middle name and my best friend from the 7th grade's name)

9. Tinisha Desiree' Alexis

bluz4 12-04-2001 12:10 AM

i just have a few:

for girls:
numa amarin (numa means strength)
muhlen (combination of my name and boyfriends)
sahar (his mom and sister's name)
for boys:
raja (boyfriend likes that)
but i have always liked: nathaniel gregory
musa ramadan (boyfriend's name)

i just think that your child's name should have some meaning: whether its a combination of you and your husband's names; a family member's name; or it has its own meaning, ie. characteristic that you hope your child grows up to have... just don't be creative and excessively long with a name just to be... i can't stand that. and dont be cruel.

it took me a long time to like my name: enjoli (rhymes with bonjovi)

Poplife 12-05-2001 09:04 AM

Yep

Hey, I'm with you. My name is afro-arab and people always tell me it's soooo different. I know it's not because I have met other people with my name. Pretty maybe. But not unusual. :p

It was actually picked for it's meaning first, THEN it's sound. That means alot to me.

Perhaps I should have mentioned the fact that they names on my list were geared towards people that randomly name their baby something with no meaning or thought behind it.

Baby Names

I like unique names too, but my children names are plain White collar American names

My children names are Terrence Terrell and Forrest Lee, IV

But in high school my friends and I used to pick out of the ordinary names like

Keundrick Keshon, Zachary Antionne, Breanna Brenshay Simone, Kenyana Kenshay--this is the name I name my cousin's daughter. She wanted her name to be similar to her dad's name (Kenneth Kente)

Aprylle Lechelle, Ayanna Voyya, Raven Nicole, Nisa Monique.

ClassyLady 12-06-2001 03:33 PM

I usually don't tell people my baby names because they'll steal them. Like my sister, she took one of the names that I had for one of my future daughters and changed it around to name my nephew. It's different, but it's still too close for me to use it as well.

Boys:

Isaiah
Grant
Forrest
Ariahn
Parris

Girls:

Trinity
Ariant (pronounced ARE-i-ahnt)
Aviance (pronounced AY-vi-ahnce)
Indira
India

I met a lady who named her daughter Nevaeh (pronounced Na-VAY-ah). I thought it was cute, it's heaven spelled backwards.
