4-1-1 ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 28, 2003
Is Janet Jackson engaged to Jermaine Dupri? The couple has been dating for some time and word has it that they are engaged. Jermaine says they aren’t and you can never get a straight answer out of Janet. This is the same woman who lied about her first two marriages. Maybe Janet is ready for that next step with Jermaine. Time will tell. Hairstylist Gerard Dure’ is known as one of the top hairstylists in the country. Gerard’s work is featured in many top hairstyling magazines. Gerard has styled Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige and Chaka Khan and he gets five thousand dollars for a day’s work. A few months ago Gerard styled Tyra Banks’ hair. Gerard flew to Ireland to work on the supermodel’s hair and her modeling agency has yet to pay him for his work. Gerard says if he was white they would not treat him this way and he is tired of being treated like a “porch monkey.” Gerard says he is not mad at Tyra, but her modeling agency owes him for his work. (Afrochic's sidenote: I hope he isn't the one that does Tyra's hair the majority of the time because her hair is always a hot mess 98% of the time. Hide the fo head Tyra, hide yo fo head. Chaka has entirely too much weave and Mary's hair looks too weavy.) Is Eve’s past catching up to her? The popular rapper/actress is set to hit the small screen in September with her new show on UPN called Eve. Early in her career, Eve used to work as a stripper and now there are pornographic photos being circulated on the internet showing a woman who looks like Eve getting a sex act performed on her. Eve says she used to be a stripper and that the woman in the photo could be her. She says someone has been trying to blackmail her and ruin her reputation by threatening to expose the pictures. Vivian Green, Heather Headley, Floetry and Erykah Badu are leading the nominations for the 9th annual Lady of Soul Awards. Erykah Badu is getting the “Entertainer Of The Year Award.” Vivica A. Fox is getting the “Lena Horne Award” for outstanding career achievement. The show will air on August 23rd, and will be hosted by Arsenio Hall, Aisha Tyler, Heather Headley and Tyrese. Now speaking of Vivica, everybody is talking about her new love. Vivica is pulling a Demi Moore. Vivica, who recently divorced her husband, singer Six-Nine, is now dating a man 15 years younger than her. He’s a football player, Danerien McCants. He plays with the Washington Redskins. He wears number 85 and he was a fifth round draft pick in 2001. McCants is a graduate of Delaware State and he was recently involved with a woman in Virginia. They had an on again/off again relationship, but now he’s with Vivica. Calvin Richardson is a new singer on the music scene. Calvin is currently climbing the charts with the song “Keep On Pushin’.” Calvin says the song is about a girlfriend who won’t forgive him for cheating on her. Calvin is coming to Unity Day, Sunday August 17th, on the Ben Franklin Parkway. In a recent interview Calvin spoke of his past relationship with singer Angie Stone. Calvin says they were never an item, he was just working for her and it was just business. A couple of years ago I had a chance to interview Angie and she told me they were an item and she was in love. Calvin says he stopped working with her because he needed more creative control over his work. Calvin and Angie are no longer on speaking terms and the breakup of their relationship whatever it was, was very bitter. Former Eagle, Reggie White is blasting the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Reggie says Jesse let people down in his dealings with NASCAR. Reggie says the Rainbow Push Coalition got $250,000 from NASCAR to help get African Americans interested in stock car racing. Reggie says nothing happened after the organization got their money. Reggie feels Jesse uses his status and his organization to take money from companies without helping people. Reggie has a new book out he’s promoting called Broken Promises, Blinded Dreams, Taking Charge Of Your Destiny. Gladys Knight described him as the “Velvet Bear” and now American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is getting his own teddy bear. The Ruben Teddy Bear is going to be sold in stores starting in September. Tampa Bay defensive back, Warren Sapp, is getting a divorce. Sapp’s wife of five years, Jamiko Sapp, says she has had enough and she wants out. The couple has two children ages 7 and 2. Earlier this year Sapp had to take a paternity test to determine if he is the father of a child born to a woman in Voorhees, New Jersey. Sounds like the test came back positive and now the wife wants out. Hmmmmmmmmm? The hottest rapper on the music scene is 50 Cent and he’s coming out with his own clothing line. 50 Cent is teaming up with Marc Ecko for the G-Unit clothing line. The line should be ready by the holidays and the clothes will be reasonably priced with jeans starting at $40. As Luther Vandross continues to recover from his stroke, some of his friends in the entertainment industry have gathered to film his music video for “Dance With My Father.” Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Monica, Brian McKnight, Patti LaBelle, Johnny Gill, Babyface and Whitney Houston participated in the video. Actor Dominic Chianese who plays “Uncle Junior” on the hit HBO show The Sopranos is being written off the show. The “Godfather of Soul” James Brown is divorcing his wife of two years Tomi Raye. The have a two-year-old son. James says the demands of touring are the reason for the breakup. Tomi tours with James and they are coming to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night with Patti Labelle. James’ first two marriages ended in divorce and his 3rd wife died in 1996, from complications following plastic surgery. |
Jesse/Reggie W./Neckcar
How did Jesee (sic) end up dealing with Neckcar?  But I'm also not surprised that Reggie White would blast Jess; Reggie comes from the right side of the political spectrum.

I saw Calvin's video last night. I was kind of feeling the song. I wondered who he was. I also wondered about a certain tattoo on his left arm.
Now, I feel for the hairstylist. Get yours, man, get yours. Oh NO, Uncle Junior is leaving? He was so funny to me. Yet another athelete who cannot seem to put on 2 or 3 condoms with EACH encounter.  |

I commend Ben for stating that she is none of those things. I know that she isn't. There aren't many people who are. I know that there are people that come from "the block" that keep a little bit of that with them, but with fame and status, you can't COMPLETELY remain that. I have never heard of her ever being as down as she claims to have been. From other articles, they say that she was never around or just kicking it with the boys and girls on the block. Thanks Ben for exposing this charade. |
Jesse & NASCAR
Actually Jesse received more money than that from the France Brothers to start Nascar weekly racing teams. But it seems Jesse wanted more and some folks at NASCAR may be a bit peeved with him now since representatives from NASCAR was invited to participate in the sports seminar during Rainbow Push's recent convention here and some PUSH members went on public tirades against them calling them "The last bastion of White Supremacy". So Jesse, um where is the money?

Rapper-Actor Heavy D Loses 135 Pounds
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Heavy D isn't so heavy anymore.
The rapper-turned-actor says he's dropped 135 pounds in the last year. Although he didn't say what he previously weighed - or how he lost the weight - Heavy D, whose real name is Dwight Myers, said the loss wasn't prompted by health concerns. "I went on a couple auditions and one director was kind enough to say, 'Look, you would've had this part but you're not fitting, you're stifling yourself,'" he told the Television Critics Association last week. "He was right. I kind of always knew it in the back of my mind, and I just woke up on a Tuesday and I just kept going." Heavy D plays a mechanic in "The Tracy Morgan Show," a proposed show starring the former "Saturday Night Live" comic. It's not yet on NBC's fall schedule. Heavy D composed and performs the show's title theme. The 36-year-old has no plans to lose the moniker he's used since he broke into the music business. Heavy D and the Boyz earned three Grammy nominations and scored a hit with "We Got Our Own Thang." "There's a lot of checks involved with 'Heavy D,' so that name stays," he said. His credits include the movies "Life,""The Cider House Rules" and "Big Trouble." |

Gabrielle's Survival Story
Gabrielle Union's Survival Story
Gabrielle Union co-stars with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in "Bad Boys II," which has already grossed over $91 million at the box office. But before she hit Hollywood, Gabrielle lived a story movies are made of -- a story of fear, of tragedy, and ultimately, one of survival. "Back in 1992 you had something very horrible happen," said Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson. "Yeah. During a robbery at a store where I worked at my summer job, I was raped and beaten and actually had a real gunfight for my life. Fortunately, I survived and the man was convicted and is in prison now," Gabrielle revealed. |

Rapper's final hours
Pal: Fearful Jay flashed a .45 By MICHELE McPHEE DAILY NEWS POLICE BUREAU CHIEF Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay) Hours before he was gunned down, hip-hop pioneer Jam Master Jay showed up at his Queens studio with a .45-caliber handgun stuffed in his jeans, afraid he was about to die, a longtime pal of the rapper has told the Daily News. "That was the first time I ever saw Jay with a gun," Ronald (Tinard) Washington said. "He was scared. He didn't say it, but I know Jay. He was scared." In an exclusive jailhouse interview with The News, Washington said he knows who killed Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell. He knows because he was there that day, he says. Washington - who is awaiting trial in Nassau County on unrelated robbery charges - has told police investigators and prosecutors his story. Detectives believe that Washington was nearby when Mizell was killed in his Hollis, Queens, recording studio in October. But they are unsure whether that makes him a good witness or the likely lookout for the killer. Nonetheless, detectives are investigating Washington's version of events, according to NYPD Inspector Michael Coan, a police spokesman. And at the request of law enforcement officials, The News is withholding the names of the murder suspects implicated by Washington, 39. "Jay was the only person in this universe who called me by my name, Ronald," Washington said from the jail, accompanied by his lawyer, Dana Grossblatt. "I did not commit this crime. I loved Jay." On Oct. 30, Washington said, Mizell summoned him to the recording studio. When he got there, Mizell asked him whether he had a gun. He says he didn't, but that Mizell lifted his jersey to show off his own chrome-handled .45. "I told him I didn't have a gun," Washington said. "So he gave me one that was hidden in the studio. Then he gave me $200 to buy bullets." After buying the ammo, Washington said, he returned to the studio to find a husky man - a former rap manager - and his son heading into the studio. Minutes later, he heard gunshots. Mizell was killed, and a friend, Urieco Rincon, 25, was shot, both by a .40-caliber gun. Two .45-caliber shells - matching the type of gun Washington said Mizell had - were found in the studio lounge. The men Washington said he saw matched descriptions of the suspects released by cops hours after the shooting. NYPD detectives are investigating those men, but they are not being labeled suspects, sources said. Cops mum on gun The NYPD refused to say whether Mizell was carrying a gun the night he was slain. "We cannot comment on what was found at the crime scene," Coan said. Washington wonders whether Mizell might still be alive had he interceded. But then he said, "There are only two types of people who run into trouble - cops and fools - and I ain't neither one." Mizell's mother, Connie Mizell, said she doesn't know what to make of Washington's tale. She told The News that since her son's slaying, she has come across evidence that makes her believe he may have been involved in things he never disclosed to her during their daily conversations - including carrying a weapon. "A lot of things I hear now make me think something was going on in his life that bothered him," Connie Mizell said last week from her home in North Carolina. "There is no way for us to know now if he was threatened or afraid," she said. "If he thought someone was trying to kill him, he never would have told us, the family. He never would have said something that would have frightened me." Even if Washington's story is true, it's still unclear why those men wanted Mizell dead. Washington suggested Mizell may have been involved in at least one drug deal that went bad, and that may have angered the two men whom he saw walk into the studio. The around-the-clock murder case has been a complex one, with detectives investigating drug kingpins and unpaid debts, alleged marital infidelities and disrespectful rap rhymes. Uncooperative witnesses Police have described two possible witnesses - Lydia High, who buzzed the killers into the studio, and her brother, Randy Allen, Mizell's longtime business partner - as uncooperative. High has told cops that the two men were masked, though Washington said they had no masks when he saw them. Meanwhile, federal prosecutors are conducting a sweeping probe into the rap industry that extends beyond gangsta street violence and into the offices of record company executives. The case could relate to Mizell's slaying, sources said. "It is a complicated case," Coan said. "We are looking at every motive. Old disputes, arguments, business. Every door is still open." Washington is in the Nassau County jail, arrested for allegedly being part of a two-man crew that robbed a Floral Park, L.I., hotel clerk at gunpoint, then led cops on a high-speed car chase through Long Island. Police had been seeking Washington as a potential suspect after the Mizell shooting. After his robbery arrest, Washington told police his name was Mark White. Fingerprints revealed his identity and his criminal past. He has convictions for shooting a cop during a jewelry store heist, dealing drugs and committing assaults. As for Connie Mizell, she continues to visit her son's grave and even prays for whoever killed him. "Whoever shot my son, his conscience will be his end. This was not the mob. This was not a professional hit. This was a local thing," she said. "I believe in God. I believe someone in that neighborhood knows, and it will wear them out until they tell."knows, and it will wear them out until they tell." |

Tracy Morgan Leaving 'SNL'
Jul 29, 10:14 AM EST NEW YORK (AP) -- Tracy Morgan is taking his act from late night to prime time. The comedian recently left "Saturday Night Live" after seven seasons to star in "The Tracy Morgan Show," a proposed comedy about a hardworking family man that isn't yet on NBC's fall schedule. Morgan recalled how his big break on "SNL" affected his family and friends in the Bronx. "My whole life became a series of calming everybody down," he told the Television Critics Association last week. "They were on my front door. It was like hitting Lotto. "I had to really get my family up out of the 'hood first. With the second check, we were gone. We live in a nice Jewish neighborhood. Quiet with our music, no gunshots, all that stuff. It's a positive effect on us. Some people tripped, but they're all right now." Morgan recently moved his wife and three sons, ages 17, 16 and 11, to Los Angeles, where the new show is taped. His character runs an automotive repair shop, a change from the outrageous characters and celebrity impressions he did on "SNL." "This character gets to show people in the public that I'm a dad. They get to see the struggle," he said. "I grew up in a broken home, so this is what it would have been like if my dad would have stayed with my mom. This is what I wanted to see and I'm proud of it." |

Supposedly, Madonna had invited Missy over to her house so they could "bond" before they shot the ad and Missy turned her down. Then the day of the shoot Madonna arrives on time and so does Missy but Missy sits in her car talking on her cell phone for almost an hour. Madonna eventually goes out into the parking lot and taps on the window only to be waved off by Missy. Finally Missy comes n so things can get underway. |
I just heard on the radio that Whoopi Goldberb has been approached to play the late Latin Sensation Celia Cruz, i just don't think this make any sense. They say that the Latino community is outrage because the feel a latin actress should potray the role.
