My recruitment thread!
Yeah, its my rush thread. I'm rushing at Penn State, home to 20 NPC sororities, 8 NPHC fraternities and sororities, 50+ IFC fraternities, 4 of the NAFLO sororities and fraternities, 2 Asian-interest sororities, 2 Asian-interest fraternities, an Indian fraternity,a Multi-cultural fraternity.... the only thing we dont have is Theta Nu Xi and Iota Phi Theta :D
Anyway, this fall I will be going through Formal Rush with these sororities: 1. Alpha Chi Omega 2. Alpha Delta Pi 3. Alpha Omicron Pi 4. Alpha Phi 5. Alpha Sigma Alpha 6. Alpha Xi Delta 7. Chi Omega 8. Delta Gamma 9. Delta Delta Delta 10. Delta Zeta 11. Gamma Phi Beta 12. Kappa Alpha Theta 13. Kappa Delta 14. Kappa Kappa Gamma 15. Phi Mu 16. Pi Beta Phi 17. Sigma Delta Tau 18. Sigma Kappa 19. Sigma Sigma Sigma 20. Zeta Tau Alpha I promise to have the blandest thread ever because keeping 20 sororities names and events straight in my mind is going to be hard. :D Anyway, right now I'm still thinking about the pros and cons about going through rush. I'm a very committed Christian and I don't want to join something that may distract me from my relationship with the Lord. I've read different articles and I feel that I can go greek with no problems but I don't want to put myself in temptation. So I'm like 85% sure I'll rush. |
BlueGBI,
I understand your hesitation about recruitment, but I'd suggest that you go for it. Most sororities were founded on Judeo/Christian principles, so their structure shouldn't interfere with your commitment to your faith. Penn State sororities are decently sized-- the Kappa chapter alone has 70 members-- and I'm sure that you'd be able to find at least one Christian sister in each chapter. You won't be alone if you choose not to go out drinking or be a party girl. Furthermore, Penn, like most campuses, has active student fellowship groups, and you can become involved in those while still being an active member of your sorority. My bet is that joining a sorority will give you new opportunities to strengthen and share your faith. You seem like a pretty solid girl, and my hunch is that you'll be able to find a good home in the Greek system at Penn State. Good luck and keep us posted. PS: I'd suggest just keeping the above numbers to refer to sororities in your rush thread. That way we'll all have an easy reference at the top. |
Holy moly...Greek life at Penn State is huge!!! Especially compared to UNC Greensboro, which is pretty small compared to its southern neighbors.
Anyway...I think you'll find that a lot of sororities are based on Christian ideals. In our creed, our duty to God is mentioned twice. We also have some very religious sisters who further explore their faith through Greek bible studies. Then, too, that's not to say that everyone is extremely Christian, either...we have a sister who is Jewish, as well as several who are what would probably classify as "open-minded." However, the religious issue isn't really an issue...we all just do what we can to respect each other's spirituality. Some even grow more deeply spiritual as a result of joining the sorority. That was a little bit of a ramble...I just wanted to say that being in a sorority, at least in my experience, doesn't have an adverse effect on your religion. In some cases, being in a sorority can help strengthen it. So don't worry too much about religion keeping you from enjoying Greek life...as important as it is to you, you'll find somewhere you can feel comfortable. Good luck!!! |
You seem like such a nice young woman! I am sure you will find a place you love among the 20 sororities at PSU. Enjoy!
|
I was an independent for 2 years and then pledged. Greek life didn't tempt me to do anything wrong any more than non-Greek life did.:)
|
Good luck - I PMd you!
|
blueGBI i pm'd you
|
WOW!! now thats alot of sororities! I would get all sorts of confused I think :) anyways I am wishing you the best of luck in recruitment :) Have a great time!!!!
Nichole |
Best of luck Blue! This is going to be a whopping thread...how in the world are we going to keep things straight? You are going to have so much writting to do!! Best of luck! You'll have so much fun!
|
absolutely do it. perhaps you can help others in their walk of faith?
|
Many chapters have prayer groups or Bible studies that are an option for interested sisters. If you find a chapter that you love that doesn't have some kind of group like this, take the initiative and start a weekly or monthly group among your new sisters.
If you stay firm on the Rock, nothing can tempt you! Erica |
I'm becoming more comfortable with being a Christian and being in a sorority. Thanks for all of the replies!
|
I haven't read thru the whole thread yet...but sistah, I am pulling for you! :D
Will read it when my DSL gets set up in our new home (I am logging on from the library) :) I thought the Greek life at U of Washington was big but DAYUMN! |
I have to wish you the best of luck and hope that you do atleast experience recruitment. Also, I am not the most religious person, but many of my sisters are. What I found was that they controlled their actions well and portrayed a wonderful human character. More often then not though they had to prove to others that the sorority did not lead them astray. One of those sisters was actually chapter president also and at the same time involved in Young Life.
|
WOW! There are so many stellar organizations at your school! Best of luck with recruitment! I really hope you find a place you can call home!!! :)
Like Not A Mezzo mentioned, "the religious issue isn't really an issue...we all just do what we can to respect each other's spirituality. Some even grow more deeply spiritual as a result of joining the sorority." ^^ I definately agree! |
 Wow!!! You have TONS of great groups to choose from! I am sure that your religious beliefs will not become an issue in the least. My chapter has a few Jewish girls, one Mormon girl, and I think the rest of us are either Christian or open-minded. There is no conflict whatsoever. If anything, I have learned so much about each of them and that makes me feel good :) I know you'll find a home within the greek system there. Good luck!!!
|
BlueGBI,
Good Luck going through recruitment with soooo many wonderful choices! (I PM'd you) :) Michelle |
Thanks for all of the replies. :) I've talked to some of my friends in Campus Crusade about rushing and how they would feel about it and they urged me to do it especially since to them it was apparent that I wanted to rush all last semester (I couldnt last semester because I was taking 18 credits and it was my make or break semester). Its like I have soo many people telling me to rush that if I don't, I'll have like 50 people to be accountable to. :)
|
I wish rush would hurry up and come! I can't WAIT to hear about it!! I don't know if we at GC have ever seen a thread with so many potential groups!! Best of luck, again!

I enjoy finding out about the different faiths of my sisters, as well. Good luck in recruitment! you have some great groups to choose from! |
blueGBI, i agree with all of the other girls on this thread and i'll say that it's important to look for girls who share your values but it's even MORE important to look for an organization whose members are respectful and open-minded...my own chapter is incredibly diverse and has sisters with a multitude of beliefs, but we all support each other in every endeavor...your real sisters would never try to discourage you from getting good grades, getting involved on campus and the same goes for supporting from your relationship with God...and it's good to know that i can debate and disagree with sisters and know that at the end of the day, they will still love me just the same and in the way that God has taught us to love everybody :D
|
Not to mention you might get a cyber beat down on here! :D

As everyone else is saying, you'll be okay. I know that my chapter is an anomaly here on GC, but religion was never a big issue. We had a few sisters who were Orthodox Jews, so we didn't have events on Friday nights (and if we did, they were excused).
We actually have a lot of sisters who calmed down after they joined our house. The first semester or first year of college is a time when a lot of girls are wild, and sometimes joining a group that is cohesive as a sorority can show the girls that there is more to life than partying and hooking up. Plus, they're usually so busy during New Member Ed that there's not as much time to be a party girl. :) |
I'm going to be gone (offline) starting tonight so I wont be around to read replies and etc. I'm looking forward to reading rush stories, etc when I come back on 8/25. I'm going to clear out my pms so ppl can pm me while I'm gone. I'm soo going to miss everyone and greekchat.
|
Best of luck to you!!
|
all the best to you and god bless.

So like yeah, I ended up not taking my comp down yet. (i have to on 8/11, no internet access) With all of this free time between now, school, and rush, doubts are creeping into my mind (ive talked with a couple GCers about this). I'm starting to seriously spaz about my class status (i'm a junior with 3 yrs left), i may/may not be a grade risk, and all of the blonde size 2 chicks i see on the websites (im black, far from a blonde and definitely not a size 2). Plus, some of my friends today basically told me why am I doing this, I'm not a rich white snob and I dont even own a Tiffany necklace! So yeah, my self-esteem isnt the highest this week. :o
I wish rush would hurry up!! |
AHHH!!! Don't even THINK about taking that stuff serious. The whole size two/blond/etc.etc.etc. garbage is not accurate. Think about the whole population on a campus. If you put the whole Greek system in a single file line, you would see a fairly accuate random sample of that campus. Of course, this differs from campus to campus, but for the most part, you will see a variety of "types" within a given group. You will also see guys and gals that don't fit any mold at all.
If being size two was a requirement, quota would have to be about 1. Total would be 3. Real women become sorority women. Erica |
would you want to be friends with someone who only cared about you bc you were blonde, size 2, rich, and wearing a tiffany's necklace? nope! with all of the houses for you to choose from, i am sure that there are some who are looking for those very things. i am also sure, that there are just as many groups who will be looking at you...bluegbi...and they will see the many qualities that you have to offer their group. these will be the people that you can call your sisters!

Kendra--everyone has their own ideas about Greek life. YOU can form a pretty well informed opinion during Rush and you will be much more educated than your friends probably are about the whole thing. Even if you decide Greek life is not for you, I can assure you that you will learn something about yourself and other people. Best to you! Michelle |
kendra,
i know i told you this in several pm's, but DON'T worry!!!!!!! i know easier said than done right? :) there is an organization for everyone here. pm me if you need more advice. . . |
I already PMd you, but I'll say it again. This applies to every woman, regardless of size, color, etc.
You are a beautiful unique individual gifted with special abilities that would be a credit to any group of women. Hold your head high and have a blast. |
You know what I just realized.... I realized I'm going to probably spaz for the next month but when the first party starts on 9/12, I will be cool, composed and ready to wow everyone. :)
thx for letting me vent. :D |

Hey, I'm honored! But seriously...I know what you're going through, blueGBI. I always run through the "what ifs" before I do anything!! I'm sure you're right...as soon as the time comes, you'll be shining! Erica |
another quick question
I was wondering, since I'm rushing 20 sororities this fall, would it be a problem if I name the groups I was cut from so people will know who I'm out of the running for. It'll probably help me from gettting confused.

1) Tomorrow I'm going back to Ice Cream, Cookies, Candy, Pie, and Cheesecake. The houses that I dropped/got cut from are Chi O, Gamma Phi, Kappa, and ASA. 2) Tomorrow I'm going back to Ice Cream, Cookies, Candy, Pie, and Cheesecake. Those houses, in no particular order, are AST, Pi Pi, Sigma Kappa, Theta Phi Alpha, and Tri Delta. It's really all about what you're comfortable with - rush threads are for you, not us! :D |
gone 4 2 wks
So yeah, I'm gone for two weeks until 8/25 (for real this time). My free trial with AOHell is done and I dont feel like starting another one when I'm about to go back to school. So these next two weeks, I'm going to rest, chill, and finish up rush shopping. I can't wait to come back and read everyone else's rush threads!
Bye |
Have a great time finishing getting ready, blueGBI! We can't wait to hear back from you! :)
|
enjoy your "preppin" time and get ready to have some fun.
