What happened to expansion at carnation's college?

Hi there!

Some months back there was a thread about carnation's involvement with expansion at the college she works for as an instructor. The last we heard was that several NPC groups had made presentations to the existing local sororities.

Then, mysteriously, the thread was deleted.

I know she didn't want to say the name of the college, but I do know which one it is (don't worry, I won't say) . It would appear that one of the locals has officially completed a mutual selection with one NPC and the other one appears to be staying local.

My understanding was that the administration told the local orgs to "go national or be forced to disband". Yet the other local sorority is still listed.

Similarly, it looks like the men have agreed colonizations with a couple national fraternities.

Since it's recruitment season, I would love to hear about how the colonization efforts are coming along for the new NPC group!

Carnation, if you can, do give us an update on this fantastic new opportunity for the students!

.....Kelly :)

Hey, I'm a professor, not an instructor!

You're right, one fraternity went Chi Phi and the other went Delta Sigma Phi. One sorority went Phi Mu (there was a chapter here almost 100 years ago) and the other, besieged by alums, stayed local. Now there's a group of women (the local's former officers) who broke away because they want to be national. I believe they're talking to Gamma Phi this fall and I don't know who all else.

The faculty members were told that the locals had been given an ultimatum about going national so we don't know what's going on. Regardless, we think the local will die at the hands of nationals because they'll have little chance against a national rush unless they make HUUUUGE changes.

Lots of drama here!

where did you go to college/university, carnation? you can PM me

My apologies, I wasn't trying to offend you. I was thinking of saying "professor" but I wasn't sure. Then I thought of "lecturer"...but, again, I wasn't sure. So I just went with something I thought would be a bit generic. I don't know your employment history so I have no idea if you have tenure or anything. Ah well...I'm sorry about that. :(

At any rate, it's awesome that Phi Mu will be returning to your campus! But what's this?...

Do I understand this correctly? Some of the members from the second local sorority broke away because their alumnae were firmly against their going national? It's a shame that the alumnae and actives are in this situation. However, change is change. If I was in this situation, and I was an alumna of the second local sorority, I would have probably voted for going national. Ah well..it's not me now is it. :)

Thanks for the update!

Yeah, the voting re: national or local was held at the very end of school and most of the campus was like, "Huh? What happened? Bye!"

Fuzicrayon can probably fill you in on exactly what happened but I was even told by one of my summer students that some women who really wanted to be national disaffiliated from the other local and joined Fuzi's group. That was a big:eek: around here since the 2 groups are pretty dissimilar.

Some folks from Phi Mu's national office were here over the weekend forming an alum chapter and a couple of weeks ago, they came for new member orientation and handed out all kinds of Phi Mu stuff. I saw Fuzicrayon waltzing out of the main building with something small and Phi Mu-colored!

The guys are extremely happy with their decisions and have met a bunch of local, prominent alums of their groups. All 3 groups are planning some kind of Phi-esta since they all have "Phi" in their names!

OUlioness01 07-27-2003 11:30 PM

how is fuzicrayon doing?? (this is a hint to come back girl!) i want to hear about the whole recolonization process!!!

GeekyPenguin 07-27-2003 11:33 PM

I thought Gamma Phi had already presented there - wasn't GPhiBLtColonel on the presenting team? It's great that Phi Mu is recolonizing there - it was their Nu chapter so it will be great to get that back! :)

carnation 07-27-2003 11:48 PM

Fuzicrayon was in Europe for awhile and is back on campus for July...I'll email her and try to get her to post her insights on the colonization and so forth! Also--her roommate is one of the women who disaffiliated from the other group and wants to go national.

Gamma Phi did present in April and the presenters were very sweet!

pinkyphimu 07-28-2003 02:10 AM

i am glad to hear that things are going well! fuzi- get back here, we need to hear about your trip, too!!!! and just a little tid bit of info (cuz i just got my history book) the nu chapter opened in May 1911 and closed in May 1912 when the campus banned national orgs! :) funny how things change!!!!

GPhiBLtColonel 07-28-2003 05:45 AM

Gamma Phi Beta is going back to further discuss expansion at Carnation's college. I am hopeful we will get the nod to come on campus by the end of the year so we can do a spring recruitment -- but that is just me being hopeful...
FYI -- I did attend the presentation but was not part of the team (probably because I am old & crusty!);)

breathesgelatin 08-04-2003 01:00 AM

It's awesome to hear about the developments at this college!! It sounds to me like Gamma Phi will probably be able to find a place there, making four new national GLOs. :) :) I will be rooting for all the new/prospective groups!

Back in GA

Wow! It's so great to be a topic of conversation again. It's true, I went to London and Scotland and my trip was awesome. I saw sooo many cool things over there and I already miss Europe. Then... last week I went to Panama City Beach in FL with my family for a much needed vacation. It's been a GREAT summer, but I am ready for new classes to start, my friends to come back to school, and my sisters to get rollin with Phi Mu. We are all so excited. I think we may have embarrassed ourselves during our work weekend a few weeks ago. We were all so excited to start learning about Phi Mu. We may have been overwhelming to the reps the two days they were here, but we had a great weekend! Pictures are up on our webpage if you want to see some of the posters we made. Just PM me for the address :) It's a pretty good webpage if I might say so myself *wink wink*

So I'm back and ready for questions :) Ask away!

carnation 08-06-2003 09:25 AM

I just saw where FuziCrayon is the secretary of the interGreek Council! Woohoo, way to go!

Congratulations, FuziCrayon! I LOVE your signature :) You and your sisters must be so excited.

Oh my lord...

I was browsing through the old pictures on the website of DST, and I found pictures of their installations from the 80s and early 90s.... Let me just say, their clothes are *precious*!!! :D

It's a really great site, FuziCrayon

MoonStar17 08-21-2003 12:22 AM

If you go to the left side of the page and click on the words "the boys", "cheers" etc, you can navigate through the site!

GPhiBLtColonel 08-21-2003 06:25 PM

oh okay -- THanks!!

carnation 08-27-2003 08:59 PM

I drove up to the campus for the first time this semester and right as you climb the hill, there was a Delta Sigma Phi banner! Up at the top on a dorm were the banners of the national Greek organizations--so neat, for the first time!

FuziCrayon told me tonight that their colonizing rush will be in September! They'll be initiated in the spring.

LOL--I also saw the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia banner and realized what kinds of mixups there'll be between Phi Mu and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia!

OUlioness01 08-27-2003 10:24 PM

carnation, the whole Phi Mu Alpha and Phi Mu thing isn't too bad. it's kinda funny though, because a lot of my sisters have dated Phi Mu Alphas and two of them are marrying Phi Mu Alphas next summer! No one ever confuses the two on our campus, but then again they only became really visible on campus last winter although they have been around a while.

anyway, I'm so excited about the colonization! Fuzi, I'll send that packae to you as soon as i find a box big enough! the one i have isn't quite as big as it needs to be.

That is so exciting! What nationals people were there? Molly was supposed to be up here but something came up out of town so I was wondering if she was one of them. She's from our lovely Rho Beta chapter! Also, if Robin was one of them... she is just so awesome! Our nationals people are seriously the best!

I was looking back at my minutes from work weekend and I think it was Amanda Southwell and Jen Hunt who came and helped out. They were so friendly and informative :) I can't wait to meet more Phi Mus. Ya'll Rock! Next up on our calendar at my school is Meet the Greeks. It's this Wednesday night and it's the 1st time we meet the freshmen and they get to ask all kinds of questions about greek life. Mostly its an information event, but I can't wait cause I get to meet the new potentials!! I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Back in the day, our chapter mailbox at the student center was right next to the Phi Mu chapter mailbox. The mail people never could keep it straight, LOL.

Other than that, the only confusion we ever encountered came from non-Greeks who were unfamiliar with the system and kept nicknaming us "Phi Mu." We'd correct them -- politely usually. ;)

Bulletin!

FuziCrayon's computer is down but she wanted me to tell y'all that the Phi Mu colony has been interviewing lots and lots of women and has so far extended bids to 17! More interviews will be conducted next week!

They don't really have a quota since the other sorority is local so the sky's the limit for numbers. However, I know that they'll be pretty selective--they always have. The local will have rush in a couple of weeks--if any women are left to rush!

FuziCrayon 09-26-2003 03:07 AM

More Updates!

Hey ya'll. I'm on my roomies computer. I got an email from carnation today so I filled her in :) After tonight, we've taken 22 new phis to add to our 18 sisters that are going Phi Mu! All of the girls we extended bids to have accepted and we're still going. We do have an all campus total that we must meet... it's 50. It's so high because the local sorority still has so many sisters. But it's funny because they count sisters in their total who never show up to anything or may have already gone inactive. We've got about 7 interviews to do tomorrow and we'll continue with bids next week because some people couldn't schedule an interview this week. We're still being selected and have not given bids to everyone we've seen. But the girls we have extended bids to we LOVE and they really have potential to become Phi Mu Ladies :) I'll try to keep you updated and sometime in the next week or so I'll get a new laptop so I'll be able to post more often. Our Bid Day and Formal Pledging is scheduled for Sat. October 4th, so if their are any Phi Mus in Rome that would like to attend, just PM me and I'll let you know more information. I'm glad to see that everyone is still excited about our Nu colony. We've had so much fun planning and getting the year started! We have also had a lot of help from our Phi Mu representitives, Ashley, Kelly, and Megan. They've stayed here at our school and really become our friends. They're awesome and have been so much help. We definately couldn't start this new journey without them.

More to come soon!!

carnation 09-26-2003 07:07 AM

WOW!!!! 22 already! Three cheers for Phi Mu and FuziCrayon, the NEW SPANISH MINOR!!!!!!

dzandiloo 09-26-2003 10:54 AM

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Great to hear such news-the Nu colony is making an AWESOME start! You'll have your 50 in no time! Yea!

OUlioness01 09-26-2003 01:26 PM

hooray for this amazing start!!! you all were so lucky to have Jen Hunt come down, and it sounds like you have awesome support now!!!!!! have a great time!!!

TriDeltaGal 09-26-2003 03:19 PM

Congratulations! Its sounds like your Phi Mu colony has had an amazing start and looks like you are well on your way to campus total! Good Luck!

pinkyphimu 09-26-2003 11:15 PM

way to go ladies!!! good luck with the rest of the interviews!

fuzi, are you finding lots of upperclassmen who never thought about being in a sorority are coming out for your rush? were there any phi mu legacies at your school who showed interest in the colony?

There are a good number of upperclassmen who are interested this year. And I know that one reason they've even considered going greek is because my sisters have been so active in going out and recruiting for the past two weeks. We've done something called Nighty Nites where we go do cheers up and down all of the dorm halls and hand out candy bags and talk to the girls, we've stormed the halls, searching for girls that we know are interested, as well as those who just may not know about it. I'm really proud of my sisters. We're hard workers, but we've never put this much into recruiting new members before. We're going out there and getting girls who are too nervous or just dont know about how awesome Phi Mu is!! I have heard about a legacy here at Shorter. I'm not sure what's going to happen with her yet, but I'll keep you posted.

PS We just had our "Officer Training" this weekend and it went great! I can't wait to work on the webpage and get our calendar and new information up!

OUlioness01 09-28-2003 04:36 PM

fuzi~ we were talking aobut you (very briefly) at our alumnae chapter meeting today!!! phimuantique was there and that's how it got started! i'm so glad things are going well for you!!!!

breathesgelatin 10-05-2003 02:25 PM

Hey, so by my count your Bid Day and formal pledging were yesterday! Let me congratulate Fuzi Crayon, Phi Mu, and the Nu Colony!!!

I know that the local decided to stay local... how is this affecting their rush?

Also, what came of the other independent women who were discussing starting a third sorority (a national)?

FuziCrayon 04-12-2004 04:52 PM

Hey guys - here's an update. Nu Chapter has finally been initiated! We are an official chapter of Phi Mu (and I have a copy of the charter laying on my bed to proove it)!! April 4th we initiated 49 women!! We had many guests from the executive office help, as well as sisters from the chapters at Breneau, West GA, GA Tech, and Columbus State. Initiation Week as well as our two initiations were amazing. Saturday we initiated 47 and then Sunday we initiated two of our softball players who had a game on Saturday. So we got to be on both sides of the ceremony in just ONE weekend! What an awesome thing to share with your best friends :) I can't wait until our next initiation!

AOII_LB93 04-12-2004 04:57 PM

Congratulations on initiation - being on both sides in one weekend! =) Wow!:)

MelodyCat 04-12-2004 08:18 PM

Congratulations on your initiation! :D
