Missy Elliott Works Up 8 MTV Nominations

NEW YORK - Missy Elliott worked her way to a leading eight nominations for this year's MTV Video Music Awards.



The rapper's video for "Work It," a surreal, Daliesque mixture of flies, gray skies and twisted trees, is up for video of the year, best female video and best hip-hop video, the cable music channel announced Thursday.


In technical categories, it was nominated for best direction, special effects, art direction, editing and cinematography.


Justin Timberlake (news) followed with seven nominations. "Cry Me a River" — in which he gets revenge on a cheating girlfriend, who looks an awful lot like his ex, Britney Spears (news) — received five, and the disco hit "Rock Your Body" got two.


And Johnny Cash (news)'s version of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" earned six nominations, including video of the year, best male video and best direction. The song is off his album of covers, "American IV: The Man Comes Around."


"I am overwhelmed by this great honor. I thank you all for thinking of me," the 71-year-old country legend said in a statement. "It's been 48 years since my first record and it's nice that people are still digging them up."


Also up for video of the year are 50 Cent's "In Da Club" and Eminem (news - web sites)'s "Lose Yourself." Both rappers received five nominations.


The 20th annual MTV Video Music Awards are scheduled to air live from Radio City Music Hall at 8 p.m. EDT Aug. 28. Chris Rock (news) will be the host, with musical performances planned from Christina Aguilera (news), Coldplay and others.

I can't believe Chris Rock is hosting again cause last time he cut the fool! I was like they allowed him to clown the celebrities like that those people are sitting in the audience. It ought to be funny.

It seems to me there is a lack of talent in the music industry. I kind of tired of watching these award shows where the same five people get nominated for (and win) all the awards.

At the Grammy's it was Norah Jones and at the MTV Awards this year it's Missy, Timberlake, and 50 Cent. Don't get me wrong, I like the three aformentioned artists, but can we get some variety? I wanna see Talib Kweli take home some awards.

COSIGN on Vivica's dress. I just posted a comment about it in the Celeb news thread. 50 looked HOT, :o, in his Versace pinstripe suit. The jewelry was BLINDING. Talk about BLING BLING!!!

Snoop needs to go somewhere. I think the girls with leashes were a continuation of the "P.I.M.P." video.

Christina's dress covered more than I am used to her clothes covering -- so I liked it even though I didn't really since I didn't think that pink feathers were chic.

Beyonce likes sporting that nappy weave look. She is getting carried away because I have seen her look a mess more often than I have seen her look great and polished.

Mya is going through a fast-assssssh stage. I don't understand what in the world is going on with her, but I saw her on the roast for Carson Daley and she did a lap dance for him. That dance was like whoa . . . her attitude is like whoa . . . her clothes are like whoa . . .

Did you see Vivica with 50 Cent? From 6-9 to 50 . . . what's next?? 112??

This is a mess . . . I don't like this remake but I understand that they need to do something to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the awards . . . Madonna looks phenomenal though!! She makes those children look a mess . . . she still can't sing.

I will be ok as long as Missy doesn't kiss anyone.

Ashanti's response to him asking for a kiss- CLASSIC. Before they cut to the nominees she gave the most scornful laugh I have ever heard. It was almost frightening with the depth of "hell no you're not touching me" implicit in the laugh.

But then she gives in. *sigh*

I don't think that he was trying to be funny -- I think that he really wants to kiss Ashanti . . . and he got that kiss from that horrible girl.

"This is a good look for him," Kressley said while reviewing concert footage of a shirtless Em in red jogging pants, a yellow visor and a headband. "Show me some skin. I love good skin art. ... We've got the sweatband on, which keeps the sweat from dripping in his face. It helps the mascara from running, if you know what I mean. He puts the hip in hip-hop."

"50 Cent, quite a hottie," Kressley said, reviewing the rapper's performance at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, where the rapper sported a simple white tank top, baggy denim shorts and a bulletproof vest. "He looks like a million dollars — Canadian dollars, but a million dollars."

Kressley said 50's best accessory might not be hanging in his closet. "Does he have a permit for those guns?" the style expert marveled while watching the rapper cavort shirtless onstage. "My god, look at that body! I can't say anything wrong about that. Mmm, chocolate thunder. He's giving me the jungle fever. Take my temperature." :o ;) :eek: :cool:
