Girls Gone Wild...Who's to blame?
Are the girls who participate in the Girls Gone Wild video victims or willing participants?
Here's a link to an article about it. What do you guys think? http://navisite.collegeclub.com/serv...articleid=4369 |
The author of the article says it best: "We girls gotta get smarter".
The girls who appear in those videos and then have a change of heart should realize that you should not get drunk to the point that you'd be willing to do those things. And, in the case of Erin from the Dr. Phil show, should learn to resist peer pressure. Do I think Joe Francis is a slimeball? Sure I do. But he wouldn't be the gazillionaire he is today if young women hadn't allowed themselves to be filmed in compromising positions. |
to be blunt, I've been really, really, really drunk a few ;) times in my life. but I've never shown my boobs to some random man with a camera. From the ads of GGW I've seen, many of the girls look pretty sober.
|
They are willing participants & should suck up any post-event embarrassment. I second your thought, 33girl, drunk does not equal nudity. I also heard that both Mardi Gras *and* Spring Break are fun with clothes on!!
|
Joe Francis is slime.
The line "We girls gotta get smarter." is the best commentary I've ever seen on this topic. If this weirdo ever came up to me and asked me to take my top off, he'd come away from the conversation with a broken nose. I remember reading an article on the smoking gun website wher Francis et scum got a girl tanning on a boat to flash them. When she found out that she had been filmed for GGW, she sued, claiming they used her footage for commercial purposes without her consent. She has a valid legal point. But if I were the judge in that case, I'd channel Judge Judy and say, "Dear, the next time some stranger with a camera asks you to take your top off, DON'T!!!!" What's sad is, we actually have to spell that out to people these days........ Adrienne (PNAM-2003) |

I don't know what happened, but Snoop did say that he didn't want anything else to do with GGW. They've got new infomercials on now, and they're not showing the Snoop ones anymore.
I don't know...I think most of these girls are friggin' idiots anyway. |
This raises a question....who cares?
|
Okay, I've been drunk as a skunk and high as a kite many more times than I can remember. BUT...I've never been drunk enough to flash someone who's holding a camera! One of the things my mommy always said was not to do anything in front of a camera that you could come to regret.
I'm against many of the archaic rules that dictated women's behavior in my parents' and grandparents' generations, but there are some that are, in my mind, simple common sense. So many women endanger themselves all the time...scary. :( |

Not too long ago, I saw a special with the GGW people on VH1. Prior to seeing this special, I thought that the girls were being victimized and used as marketing tools. Now, my thoughts are a bit torn between both sides. VH1 followed a group of 3 or 4 girls who were getting ready to attend a GGW party close to their college (the footage at the party was for the newest tapes or something like that). These girls knew what they were getting themselves into...they said so themselves. One of the girls' goal was to win the Wildest Girl title. She was taking shot after shot while getting ready because she said she would be wilder if she was drunk. Needless to say, when these girls got to the party, they were all over the camera men. These girls were not victims. Later on that night, the girls were offered money to go in a room and do things on the camera (now that I think of it, these might be the girls that are mentioned in the orginal article). One girl out of the bunch didn't feel right about it and left the room. She was drunk....but again, her decision to drink! Do I feel sorry for these girls, no. They consented to the offers made by the camera men.
All things aside, I do think that Joe Francis (or whatever his name is) is scum. He is making money off of girls who are drunk and willing to flash the camera. Some people might compare this business to porn or Playboy Magazines. However, IMO, there is a major difference...the women featured in porn and Playboy are making lots of money for what they are doing. The people featured on GGW are making nothing themselves, but are reeping in the money for the creators. I do not agree with this. |
Why I am sure some girls regret and feel victimized by GGW, I am sure some just do it for their 15 mins of fame.

A few of my friends were in Cancun for spring break. One of the GGW guys kept following my friends around the bar begging them to flash the camera. Kept buying them more and more drinks. Of course, my friends just kept taking these free drinks and ultimately refused to flash the camera. :) The point being, I think the GGW people harass a lot of the girls into flashing the camera. And, the drunker they get, the more reluctant they are to say no because of their lower inhibitions. Yeah, the girls are idiots. Never flash someone with a camera...plain and simple. I still do feel bad for them though. That would suck to wake up the next morning and remember what you did the night before and realize that you're going to be in a mass-produced video with your boobs showing. <shivers>

Sure naked girls are fun to look at but sooner or later even that gets old, maybe this GGW thing will too. Wait Payboy just turned 50 I am way off.
Why is it when I flash my chest no one really cares. |
I agree that these girls are stupid, and I agree they pretty much got what they deserve, alcohol is not an excuse for stupid behaviour.

IMO, the only thing that's easy are these girls. |
I have really no sympathy for these girls. They know what they are getting into. Sure, some of them probably get drunker than they wanted and go farther than they planned, but that's their problem. It's called common sense. Use it.

I have seen a few shows on the Girls Gone Wild thing and I know that the girls are not victims. most of the new videos are done at parties that GGW throws and the girls go knowing what theyre getting themselves into. I have been to a GGW party before also. I was pretty plastered but still didnt flash the camera. Yes these guys will buy you drinks and ask you to flash but you just say no and you can very nicely ask them to not ask again or go away and more times than not they do. There are plenty of girls that love to do stuff like this and are all gungho about having themselves on television nude or not. The guys are not paying them money at least Ive never seen them offer any to anyone and Ive been in the same place as those guys like three or four times while on vacation. The parties are awesome and all that but no girl is made to flash the camera she does it on her own free will. personally I think the guy is a marketing genius, he knew girls would get crazy to be on tv and he just came up with the idea and now hes like a billionaire...most people are just mad cause they never came up with the idea.
Nichole |
I wouldn't call Joe Francis a "marketing genius". It doesn't take much to realize that girls flashing their boobs + horny guys = $$$. And it's not like other business men are looking at him and saying, "wow, I wish that was me". The guy may have tons of money, but his reputation is trash cause that's what he sells. But I don't think he's to blame in this situation. The girls know what the deal is. They see that they're being exploited. I just think Joe is a tool for making a living off of exploiting them.
|
Who cares who's to blame? It's here, now we have to deal with it.

I've actually seen one of the videos and I was apalled at what some of those girls were doing! Sure I've been drunk before, but NEVER so drunk that I would do anything even remotely close to what some of those girls are doing! So while I can see the side that "Oh they're drunk, they're victims because they don't realize what they're doing"... I think that's crap. Even in my drunkest state I've been able to say no when people tried to get me to do something I wouldn't ordinarily do.

It doesn't take a genius to realize it. But it does take an entrepeneur to do it. He made a 100 million dollars from shitty movies. He's a marketing genius.
Most of my friends that are business majors, male or female, would do this business in a second for 100 million dollars. Quote:

Also, some of you kids aren't thinking: As someone said above most of the parties now are known in advance as GGW.
Also, most of the really risque scenes are by professionals that are put into the parties or movies as ringers. |
If you drink to the point of not knowing what you're doing, others aren't making you a victim.... you're making yourself a victim.
|
All I've ever seen of a GGW video is what they show on the commercials. I've never actually watched one. How explicit are they? Is it just girls flashing, or is it hardcore porn or what?

On one hand, I think that these girls who get drunk and flash the cameras need to learn how to deal with the consequences of their actions. Like everybody else here, I've been pretty drunk quite a few times and never flashed a cameraman. (I have in fact been very drunk in the precense of the GGW cameraman and managed to restrain myself. ;) )
But the fact that, from some accounts, these girls are basically plied with alcohol and then taken advantage of sexually. That's different from date rape in degree, but the theme is the same. I think it depends on the individual situation: if a girl is out getting sloshed with her girls, they run into the GGW cameras and she decides to flash, I give her absolutely no pity. But for the girl that is out getting sloshed with her girls when the GGW cameras stop by, and they try to get her to flash them but she refuses -- but then they keep pushing free drinks on her to the point where she gets so drunk that she stops refusing . . . to me that crosses into sketchy territory. Yes, it was her choice to take those drinks, but the coercers share at least some of the blame. I don't know if any of you have ever seen a GGW video, but they are completely unsexy simply because most of the girls look like they'd rather be doing anything else than what they're doing. They look like they were coerced into it. And if that turns out to be the case, that seems pretty scary. |
I'm going to echo what about every other girl on here has said but anywho...
Ok, so I have been drunk more times than I can at all remember. But, even when my inhibitions are lowered, I would never, ever lift up my shirt and flash a bunch of guys at all, let alone a camera! I mean I think this totally relates to how some girls can get super duper drunk at parties, and then end up sleeping with some random guy that they have never even met before. Then, the next morning they regret it and blame it on being drunk. I mean, I know how to drink, but I've never slept with some random guy because I was too drunk not to. Obviously the alcohol is a factor, but come on, if you know alcohol is going to make you completely lose any respect for your own body and you keep drinking, and keep accepting drinks, isn't it mostly your own fault?? I probably sound like a major bitch here, but oh well.. |
You don't sound like a bitch at all. People will very rarely do what they totally don't want to while drunk. However, they will do what they would not normally do if they didn't have an excuse.
