recruitment clothes-what are you wearing?
Alright, I've decided I need an exciting thread to tide me over until rush threads start, so I have a new topic for everyone about one of my favorite parts of the recruitment threads:
If you are a PNM, what will you be wearing for the different days of rush? If you are an active, what will your chapter be wearing for the different days of rush? also, for actives and alums: What was the craziest, most out of place outfit you ever saw a PNM wear to a rush party? That should jump start something! |
Our chapter is going to wear cute solid bright sundresses on the first day, and then the next 2 days we're dressing in accordance to our rush skits. Then on pref night, we're wearing our black dresses, and on bid day we get to put on our spiffy new shirts with denim skirts and cute flip flops. I can't wait!
As far as PNM's goes...this one girl showed up wearing hardly anything and her boobs were pooching out...it was gross! Some advice: unless you wanna be cut, dress classy!!!! |
Fun rush outfits!
Ohh this is a fun topic! Our outfits for rush are:
Day 1 - Go Greek day: Denim skirts, panhel t-shirts (ours will be hunter green), Old Navy black flip flops Day 2 - Skit day: Outfits will vary according to skit parts and such, girls in skit wear a variety of different things, everyone else wears black capris, white button down shirts, pink neck scarfs, and black slides. We also have girls designated to be "carhops" (goes with the skit...yay I am one!:) ) and we will wear black shorts, white platform tennis shoes, bright pink t-shirts with our skit's logo on them, little black aprons with the logo on them, and black hair ribbons Day 3 - House tour/philanthropy day: American Eagle tie-belt khaki skirts, BRIGHT blue t-shirts that follow the theme of the day and matching bright blue J.Crew flip flops Day 4 - Pref: Black dresses, black strappy shoes, and our badges Day 5 - BID DAY!: Black t-shirts with the three stars from our badge and a cute saying (I don't really remember all of it though) and it's all written out in pink glitter, our Phi's will get pink ones with silver glitter writing :) I am so excited, only two weeks left until work week!!!!! Three more until rush starts! :) |
Yay for clothes-talk :D
Rounds 1 and 2: These are typically formal rounds of rush where there's just talking...usually we wear nice sundresses or skirts and shirts with interesting prints...no one usually wears pants because it gets SO HOT in the house with so many girls in it Skit Round: FAB*SpiceySpice are you doing Grease? cause your dress code sounds a lot like ours...the girls in the skit wear poodle skirts and all of the other sisters wear jean capris and matching tank top, flip flops and scarf (either tied in the hair or around the neck) with a white button-down shirt Philanthropy Round: I think this round is still blue jeans and a black tank top with a make-your-own white shirt on top of it...hmm, this reminds me to check my rush guidelines! Pref: Black semi-formal dresses...everyone always looks so pretty! Bid Day: Normally we wear jeans and our bid day shirts, i don't think we've decided the shirt yet though the craziest PNM outfit? that would definitely go to this one girl last year who had blond hair with large pink chunks in it...it looked REALLY cool but the overkill was that she wore all bright pink and told us that she had dyed her purse to match her hair, nails and outfit the night before in her dorm room sink...then she told us how she got fined by her RA because the dye wouldn't wash off the sink or the counter! she definitely was memorable though and got invited back for all rounds until the end when we realized that she wasn't really into us after all |
Ice Water Teas: our Panhellenic T-shirt (black with hot pink writing), denim skirts and black Old Navy flip flops.
Philanthropy Day: Khacki shorts, our Anchor Spash t-shirt and gray new balances. Skit Day: Pink baby t-shirts with "DG in the City" on it, black skirt and strappy heels. Pref: Black dress with open toed shoes. BID DAY! :D : Cute sundresses! |
Open House: Panhellenic T-shirts and jean skits (no shorter than 1 business card length from the knee); rainbow flipflops, or flops that match the shirt color (which I don't know what it is yet).
House Tours: Sun dresses (again, no shorter than 1 business card length from the knee); strappy sandles to match. Skit Night: Black capre's; a button-up collared shirt in one of the following colors: siren blue, lime green, or hot pink; strappy black sandles. Pref Night: Black dress (no shorter than one business card length from the knee); black shoes (open or closed toe yet to be determined because we are still deciding about hose). Bid Day: Haha, don't really even know yet!! Guess I'll find out soon - work week starts Aug. 9th or so... |
Our Chapter (at UGA) wears:
Round 1: yellow sundresses (no strapless or spaghetti straps) Round 2(House tours): red, black, and white dressy outfits (dubbed "gameday attire", since we dress up this way for football games), no black pants (to make sure there is a variety of styles) Round 3(skit round): Black and white dressy outfits. Good since this year, there seems to be a lot b&w clothes coming out for the fall Prefs: short black dresses with strappy shoes (Badges are worn entire week) Bid day: For the past two years, we've done a luau theme and sisters wear hawaiian print dresses and NMs wear their white dresses |
I'm so jealous! I wish we got to do all this for rush. We only do informal so no one pays attention to clothes! :( lol I can't imagine the looks on my chapter's faces if I had tried to make them dress to guidelines for rush lol they'd have killed me! still...it would be fun :)
|
We don't have recruitment until January, but here's what we'll be wearing (or at least what we wore last year).
Philanthropy Night: Medium color, boot cut jeans Sneakers (Panhellenic rules... EVERYONE must wear sneakers... when I was going through recruitment they made people go back and change shoes if they weren't wearing sneakers) While polo shirt with wine and blue logo Skit Night: Cute party outfit (but no boobs or butts!) Costumes for people in the skit Sisterhood Night: Black skirt Twinset (bright colors) (Still debating if we should wear our badges or not... last year some people did and some people didn't and I think that looked pretty bad!) Pref Night: Black cocktail dress Badge Pearls/Gold Jewelry I wish we had recruitment at the beginning of the year so that we could wear cute summer clothes!! I guess it's one of the downsides to deferred rush... |
I bought 3 new dresses last week that I plan on wearing, but I only know which I'll be wearing for Pref (if I make it that far :))
Dress 1 - sleeveless tourquoise and white gingham print sundress Dress 2 - sleeveless black shift with white trim around arms and neck, with a 3 inch white hem Dress 3 (my pref dress) - sleevless pastel blue, green, white and purple floral with a draped neck that comes right below my knees. It's really filmy and makes me feel really feminine. Unfortunately it show my tattoo, so I'm testing different ways of covering it up... Philanthropy round - I keep changing my mind. It's more casual than the others, so I'm thinking khakis and this pink shirt I have that I absolutely love, but I haven't decided. I still have to buy shoes and accessories. |
Yay! I love clothes talk:-)
Our rush is also in January so, sadly, cute summer clothes are a little out of season but we try to look cute and stay warm anyway! The current plan is... Go Greek Night: letter t-shirts with a pattern that has red in it, red pants, black boots Philanthropy Night: medium blue jeans, primarily white sneakers, stop domestic violence t-shirts Sisterhood Night: Black dress pants, black boots, and a variety of purple hued button down shirts or sweaters Pref Night: Nice black buisness suits or dresses, black closed toed heels and hose Bid day: letter shirts and jeans, PNMs wear their bid day shirts which we all wear the next day to classes I am so enjoying hearing all y'all's ideas... |
Great topic! I'm getting so excited for rush and it's still a month away! (Work week in 3 weeks.)
My chapter is wearing: Day 1: Panhellenic T-shirt (I hope it's a cute one this year!), khacki shorts and nice white sneakers. Day 2: Black Capris, black strappy sandals, and a red shirt with glittery writing (not sure what it says yet)...or the skit costume. Day 3: Bright shirts in various colors, I think khacki skirts...and I need to figure out what shoes! ... again, or the skit costume. Pref: Black dresses, black heels, and Quills -- the gold one if we have them. Bid Day: Last year we wore cute sundresses for when the PNMs showed up and then later changed into our Bid Day Tshirts when our new members did...not sure what we're wearing this year. AlphaChiCutie -- your outfits sound so cute! I wish my chapter dressed up just a tad more. The yellow sundresses day sounds great! As for crazy PNM dress, last year this girl came through wearing all black: longsleeved black t-shirt and long black jeans. We all wondered how she wasn't absolutely dying in the heat, what with long walks between houses, not all the houses being air-conditioned, and us having the hottest summer we'd had in a long time! |
First Day (Meet the Greeks): The chapter can wear any stlye of dress, it just has to be a cotton/linen material and a solid color. Mine is a perwinkle color and it is strapless. It goes down to my knees.
Second Day (Philanthropy): We are wearing bright colored letter shirts, khaki shorts, and athletic shoes. Third Day (Skit): The people not in skit have to wear a sparkly formal dress and then others have to wear a cute modified tux outfit. The people in skit are dressing accordingly to their "number" so to speak. I am wearing jeans, a red fitted cami with beaded fringes, red satin sash belts, a white button down shirt tied over our my red cami, and a cowboy hat. I'm in a dance to a shania twain song. Fourth Day (Pref): We all wear a formal black dress. They have to go down to the floor. Mine is a cheffon dress with a speratic amount of sequence on the top. Fifth Day (Bid Day): Our Bid Day shirts with any kind of jean bottom. |
Clothes Talk :)
Day 1: denim skirts, sandals and letter shirts in school colors
Day 2: long black skirts, dressy black sandals and our recruitment theme shirt Day 3: combination of red, black and white. it's supposed to be something we would wear to chapter Day 4: (This is one that I think went a little too far financially) Black ball gowns BID DAY :D bid shirts with whatever we want Only three weeks to go.... |
This thread is great...especially seeing the differences from school to school...
So my chapter will be wearing Day 1: Info Night: Khaki pants or capris, black flip flops or sandles, and a black shirt that I have yet to see so I cant describe Day 2: Philanthropy Night: Khaki pants or capris, black flip flops or sandles, and a green shirt that I again have yet to see Day 3: Skit Night: Black and white pin attire clothes Day 4: Pref Night: Black pin attire dresses Day 5: Bid Day: Denium pants or shorts and we wont find out our bid day shirts till that day... |

This is what I'll be wearing:
Open Houses: For the first day of Open Houses, I'm going to wear a nice blue khaki skirt with a grey shirt with either flip flops or a pair of slides. The second day of Open Houses I'll probably wear a khaki skirt and a white t-shirt with my slides. First Rounds: On both days of first rounds I'm going to wear sundresses, colors unknown until I buy them with my black slides Second Rounds: First day of second rounds I'll probably wear my nice black skirt with one of my sleeveless dressy shirts. Second day, unknown for now. I'll wear my dressier thinner heel sandals for this round. Preference Night: I'll wear my black dress I bought from Old Navy for a wedding. It has a ruffle at the bottom, no sleeves. It comes to the knees standing up and it shows only a little boob action which is great because I have a nice-sized chest and many dresses don't cover up enough of my boobs for my comfort. I'll wear my stilettos from Second Rounds for Pref unless I buy this pair of strappy sandals I've been looking at in Vicky's Secret with either a pair of diamond studs or my pearl necklace. |
This is what our chapter will be wearing:
Round One (Skit Night): Black tops with khaki skirts or khaki capris Round Two (Philanthropy/House Tour Night): Baby blue tops with black pants Pref: Black semi-formal/cocktail dresses |
you all sound wonderful...
the looks sound great. :) |
YAY, what a fun thread! Okay for my chapter it goes like this:
Set 1 (which lasts two days): We are all wearing denim shorts from either old navy or the gap and our Panhel shirt (which is orange this year). Then we are wearing white platform sneakers (like the stacked soul Jack Purcells) below the ankle socks so you can't see them. Set 2 (Philanthropy Day): Baby blue polo shirts that have Alpha Chi Omega embrodiered on the chest in navy blue with a khaki skirt either from Old Navy or from American Eagle (I have this one and I am in love with it!) with black medium sized flip flops. Medium meaning no platforms like Rocketdogs, but nothing really thin. Examples are like the classic Reef sandel, or the JCrew wedge flip flop. Set 3 (Skit Day/House Tours): Everyone not in the skit is wearing jean capris from Old Navy or the Gap and the white sneakers again. A red shirt that says "Always Alpha Chi" (our theme for that day!) in the Coca Cola logo. Now I'm in the skit and I am a 50's girl so I get to wear a red poodle skirt with a white button down shirt! Pref Night: Black cocktail dress. Not longer than knee length. Nothing strapless or too revealing. No glitter or embroidery, just plain. And black dress shoes you want. Bid Day: Some shirt which I haven't heard about yet though it is sure to be cute! And whatever you wore to class that day as this is the second day of classes. |
I heart this thread (thanks chloe173:D) but I feel like we have to start like 6 threads on hockey to make it up to the guys.

a little spin
Ok so I'm wondering what all the alumnae are wearing if they are planning on helping out during Recruitment this year? I haven't decided yet, so gimme some ideas!

I'm going back to my chapter for the last two nights (hopefully, as long as I don't have an exam on the Thursday of pref) and the first night I'm going back to is Body, Soul, and Fondue night - I'll be making the food in the kitchen. (Scary, eh?) I'm probably just going to wear a letters shirt and jeans and of course flip-flops so I can be made pretty. At pref I'm going to be the "hostess" of sorts - helping girls sign in and directing our waiters - we have SigEp waiter for us* and so I'll be in charge of them. *No this is not violating NPC agreements as they do not speak to the PNMs and we have no other NPC chapters, thus no formal recruitment. ETA: For Pref I'll be wearing the same thing as the actives, since I will also be doing the ceremony - so black nylons , black strappy heels, and one of my many black dresses - my two favorites are strapless and last winter I wore one with a cardigan, but it might be too hot for that in September. |
Way for me to be the only PNM who responds to this thread!
Rush at my school is BEYOND laid back (an open recruitment night, 2 invite nights, then pref) so I just plan on wearing outfits made from combinations the following clothing: -Brown Rampage Suit Jacket -Brown Rampage Suit Pants (Yeah, it's a suit but I don't like the way they look together) -White, Kelly Green, and Royal Blue Ralph Lauren 3/4 sleeve Button Down shirts -Black Tommy Hilfiger Suit Jacket -Black Tommy Hilfiger Skirt (I might wear this suit together...I'm not sure yet, they look good apart too) -Black Gap Dress Pants -Baby Pink Old Navy Wrapped-Ballerina-style 3/4 sleeve sweater -Khaki ankle-length JCrew Pants w/ tiny green turtles embroidered all over (soooo cute I love these pants) -spaghetti strapped tank top (universal wear for under other shirts) one black, one white -Deep Purple Lace tank top (looks good w/ the black tank top underneath) -Old Navy Ribbed Black tank top w/ collar -Red Polo Dress (Think Lacoste style) As for jewelry- I wear tiny silver hoops, an artsy silver swirly bangle, a tiffany style toggle heart bracelet & matching style necklace (but the charm on the necklace is a star not a heart) and a ring on both of my ring fingers, left thumb, and right index finger. I wear simple make-up (concealer where needed, mascara, light blush, a tiny bit of eyeliner, and chapstick)...if I'm feeling particularly giddy I have subtle shimmery accent powder I'll dot on my cheekbones for a bit of definition... shoes: steve madden black strappy wedgey sandals, steve madden black flip flops, brown mules, red old navy flip flops, off white macrame flip flops I'm not a bright color type of person so yeah, most of the stuff here is very muted and dark.... If anything sounds EXTREMELY inappropriate please tell me!!!! :) -Sarah |
Sarah, the only thing I could see wrong with yours is that the suits might be too dressy - I would just look around to see what sorority women on the campus are wearing and go based off that. :)
|
Sarah, I might also add that if you have DZ on your campus they use turtles a lot as one of their nation symbols...so if you wear the turtle pants be careful...other groups might think you are already decided...
|
 Steve Madden shoes? Required? Not that they're not adorable, but if that's a requirement of membership, that does price PNMs out of joining.
My favorite rushee apparel story ... this girl came to third party in jeans and a t-shirt, and not even a cute nice one. She said she wouldn't dress up for sorority events, because she didn't think it was worth it - but she would if we had XYZ sorority on our campus! Needless to say, she was not invited back to pref, and she didn't join anywhere. |
I was wondering about the brands thing also, like do all the sisters go and buy Ralph Lauren collared shirts? can you use a knock off? buying stuff like that for rush every year would (while undeniably making my chapter look soooo cute) break my bank. I mean if you guys can afford it, go for it, but is it ever a problem?
|
It's so funny how things vary from school to school. When I lived in, we didn't have to have matching stuff in our rooms, but over the years, our chapter has evolved to the point to where the roomies like to have a matching room, and they plan it out over the summer. :)
As for alumnae attire for alums assisting with collegiate recruitment-- when I assisted with recruitment if I was in the front serving water, etc., I was prior given a list of what the girls were wearing, and asked to match (ie: if the girls were wearing baseball tees and denim capris, I could wear a baseball tee or 3/4 length shirt and denim bottoms of my choice; if the girls were wearing pref attire, I was asked to dress in pin attire, preferably all black.). If I was doing behind the scenes work, there was no dress code, usually something comfy. The safest bet if you are a PNM going through recruitment: look your personal best and if you consider an outfit questionable-- either too casual or too "revealing," leave it in your closet. You're not going to offend anyone by wearing those clothes, but you won't be dressed to suit the occasion, either. This isn't a beauty pageant or a competition, but looking your personal best makes you feel better and when you feel your best, it shows. As some other sisters at GC have recommended-- a fun coversation piece like a unique pendant or bracelet helps as a conversation point, sometimes. Of course, remember that it's not what you wear, but who you are that makes you the most memorable :) So make a laundry list :) of all the wonderful and special things about you and make sure that the sororities know about those things! :) |

OF course, there's the bad aspect to my house - the house is so small that everybody rushing sees every room in the house except for our scary basement - so you have to deep clean your room for rush. It drove me batty this semester because I moved in a week before rush started and I was still unpacking!!! |
I think that is really interesting that at some schools, sisters' bedrooms are a part of the house tour. Our sororities were not allowed to take them near bedrooms because Panhell feared that we would pull them into our rooms and dirty rush them. I think the fear a PNM would experience by being yanked into a bedroom by 3 sisters would outweigh anything people could say while dirty rushing. (In my head, I can picture this "good cop/bad cop" routine going on...LOL)
Obviously this scenario wouldn't happen at any school, but it's nice to know that Panhellenics at other schools are more reasonable about it! Back to the topic....AXWhoah: Wow! You girls are going to look fantastic! I dig the whole "red accent piece" thing. That is adorable! LuaBlanca: Everything sounds cute to me! But like another person said, if you have a DZ on campus, the turtle pants might not be a good idea during recruitment. But you can loan them to me. :) |
OK... I have a dilemma... I am on the rush committee... and our themed nights are going to be 80's and Chicago... for the 80's night the rest of the committee and our rush chair think we should be more individual and give the chapter a list of 80's "things" (IE Crimped hair, tied at the side over size t shirt, neon shirt) and tell them that they have to wear/do three things from the list.
I personally think we should look a *bit* more unified and maybe all wear different neon t's or different 80's character t's (rainbow bright, strawberry shortcake etc) from hot topic or something and maybe black bottoms and keep the list to just acessories and things to do with your hair.... like wear crimped hair or side ponytail and jelly bracelets or whatever ya know what I'm saying ? What do you all think ? I guess I'm just not too entralled wth the 80's theme to begin with fashion wise since the 80's was kinda *ugly* .... but everyone else seems pretty happy with it... HELP US BE CUTE and not look like complete 80's fashion victims !! |
No DZ on my campus, so the turtles are here to stay!
As for the suits, I'm not planning on wearing them together as suits anyway. They look better and more casual as separates. They're not "corporate-middle-aged-working-woman" suits either. They look a lot like this one here. I'm considering wearing them (the jackets especially) because September in Boston can get kind of brisk, and they don't scream "Hello! I'm wearing a jacket!" if I keep it on inside. The pants and skirt aren't "suit-style" either, so you can't tell if I wear them apart. Seeing as how my campus isn't a traditional campus (we're spread out over many city blocks and on 3 sides of Boston Common) I'm thinking there'll probably be a lot of outside-ness, so I want to make sure I'm comfortable. |
Rush!
This is so great! I wish I was going to be able to participate in recruitment at my school, but the plans changed so much! There isn't even a school close by me anymore! I'm living vicariously through all of you!
aj |
That boggled me last year. IheartAXO was talking about all the matching stuff she had to get for her room, and I couldn't believe it!
------------- And I'm still doing it this year! Last year was harder though because a) The colors were harder and b) It was a bigger room with more girls. I'm in LOVE with my room this year! I don't even mind it being on Tours, I'm just gonna love living in it! The color scheme is black and white with some red accents and black and white posters and photos of cityscapes, etc. My roommate is making our duvet covers and they'll be a really cute and classic black and white toile print. She's also making fun little pillows (white with our names embroidered in black, a white pillow with a red satin bow like a little present, black and white gingham, etc- just REALLY cute!) and our black and white checkerboard style rug. I bought some funky white bendable floor lamps and a big black chair with an ottoman. I bought black suede curtains that we'll combine with a sheer white drape behind it (and kinda spread it out to show the black and white). I've also just gotten fun decorations too: posters of Paris at night, canals in Venice, the Eiffel Tower and just mini pictures of black and white cityscapes, picture frames, baskets, vases, etc. I'm really close to buying a big black and white toile hatbox to hang around the room and use as storage. I think we're going to get a white little sidetable and get all crafty also- either with a mosaic or decopage. I'm in LOVE with it! It'll look so classy and sophisticated, but still very hip. We're both PSYCHED to decorate it! We're still looking for some more stuff too. |
The matching beds and everything is so crazy. I can afford to join a sorority but I could never, ever afford to redo my room every year. In that sense, I'm definitely glad I never joined a npc chapter at usc; there's no way I could ever have kept up financially. I think that all of this stuff sometimes goes a little bit overboard and makes sororities alot more elitist than they need to be. This is, in my opinion, where the rumors about those in sororities being rich comes in. A sorority should look unified, but I don't think that should be at the expense of 100s of dollars on clothing and on decorating rooms. That's just my take though, and sorry if I offended anyone with my post!
|
Actually, the comment about all the money spent making sororoities "too elitist" was very interesting. It made me start thinking of if there was even anything we could do to change it with more panhellenic rules and such, but I really don't think it's possible. The girls going through rush expect it of us, and if one house was to say "that's silly--we're not going to do it like the other houses anymore" I can guaruntee you that their numbers would go down so dramatically--let's just say, I wouldn't think they would have many more rushes to worry about.
At certain schools, the recruitment attitudes are so based in tradition and the idea of "keeping up with the joneses" that there really isn't much you can do. But as both myself and other girls like IheartAXO have stated, sometimes the money spent is not such a killjoy because we really love what we get out of it--either a really good new wardrobe to start off school with or a really cool room for the entire rest of the year. I guess the point I am trying to make is--the clothes, and the bedspreads, and the money aren't really important in the long run. But because it's fun, and they have become staples of a successful rush, they are things that probably will not change anytime soon. |
Quote:
At anchorsplash, all the sororities make up sychronized swimming dances. One sorority gave themseleves an 80's theme. I'm not trying to make you worried, but I will tell you what they wore because they looked uhm...not so good: black capris, these turqouise blue work out shirts where they let one strap hang off their shoulder, and then painted on the shirts with puff paints saying "totally 80's." I am sure in there head it was real cute, but it was just one of those things that when it came out it didn't look all that great. The focus was taken off their dancing and onto their horrible themed outfits. If I were you, I'd go look at the old popular 80's movies (Sixteen Candles, Breakfest Club, ect.), and see what the stylish people wore in those. Take it from there and credit some sort of unification where you all aren't dressed the same, but it is going with the same style. There is a way to look 80's - and then there is a way to look stereotypical 80's (which is where the ugly comes in). But yes, I would press for some sort of unifying element. Please don't get upset by the post though!! I know it might seem like I am telling you the 80's is a horrible idea - it really isn't, it's just that one sorority used the extreme stereotype and it made them tacky. |
this makes me feel sooooo old!
Quote:
I think the neon shirts or character shirts with maybe denim minis (today's popular style of jeans are extremely non-80's) would look much nicer. |
Meridionale I am definitely not offended, I honestly don't really like that we chose the 80's theme because of the possibility of ugly clothes 1st of all and second of all because of most of the freshman this year are going to have been born in like what 85 86!! I'm afraid that they're not really going to remember or care or feel nostalgic as we all do when we see strawberr shortcake and rainbow bright and hear old school madonna ya know?? but our rush chair is SOOOOOOO excited about it.... you can't say anything to her...
