In Which Languages are you Fluent?

My grandmother watched me a lot when I was very young while both my parents were at work and, although she spoke and wrote English fluently, she always spoke to me in Polish. Unfortunately, we moved away and I didn't see her as often and my mother refused to speak Polish with me so I lost pretty much all of my fluency except for a few prayers and a cuss word or two.

texas*princess 07-17-2003 07:27 PM

I only speak English fluently :)

I wish I could pick up more lauguages, it just gets harder when you get older and I don't really have a whole lot of time right now.

My older [biological] sister can speak French & Spanish fluently though

ZTAngel 07-17-2003 07:30 PM

English

And that's about it. :)

I use to know Japanese fluently but after moving back to the US, I quickly forgot it. I know maybe a few words in it.

I'm ok with Spanish. I know enough to get by. I have a very hard time conversing with Spanish-speakers. They talk so fast so I have a really hard time understanding them! :)

My boyfriend speaks Polish fluently. Lucky him. I've always wanted to learn a foreign language. It's a great skill to have. I've been trying to get him to teach me Polish but I don't think he has the patience for me. :p

SATX*APhi 07-17-2003 07:30 PM

I speak English and Spanish fluently. I would like to learn to speak Portuguese, Italian, and French (in that order). :)

greeklawgirl 07-17-2003 07:34 PM

Sit down, everyone, because I know you will be shocked--SHOCKED!--to discover that I speak Greek fluently. ;)

I had some knowledge of Spanish, but I need a major brush up, because I haven't used it in a long, long time.

Eirene_DGP 07-17-2003 07:41 PM

I can speak Spanish fluently and I am conversational in Tagala b/c my godmother is philipina used to take care of me when I was younger.

Munchkin03 07-17-2003 07:47 PM

English, of course. :)
Italian
I was fluent in Spanish, but that was a long time ago.

APhiAngel 07-17-2003 07:52 PM

Besides English I speak Farsi fluently, and I understand Turkey.

AlphaGamDiva 07-17-2003 10:01 PM

semi-fluent in french....can carry on a decent conversation with another french person, but it takes me a minute to get going. i understand it better than i speak it, but it's cool....and i'm working on it. my sister is fluent, so she helps me from time to time....and she just got back from germany, so is now fluent in that as well.

i would love to learn italian, but i think i'll get good with french b/4 i even attempt that one. :)

Unregistered- 07-17-2003 10:12 PM

I am fluent in English, French, Ilocano, and Tagalog. How's that for variety?

I am semi-fluent in Hawaiian and Japanese.

That's me exactly. I almost minored in French, but they don't offer French, or minors for that matter either, here. :(

Buttonz 07-17-2003 10:30 PM

Besides for English...I understand Hebrew pretty well..speaking it is a diffrent story!

CC1GC 07-17-2003 10:36 PM

Eh?

Language is subjective.

One guy i work with says he's fluent in french, lived his life in a bylingual environment, but has difficulty understanding certain dialects. My other co-worker, teaches 6 languages at a private school, whose main clients are gov't workers or very afluent individuals. To hear them talk in french, many would assume they're equal in capability - even though the latter is much better than the former.

AlphaSigOU 07-17-2003 10:36 PM

Let's see... I must have a flair for languages:

I'm perfectly fluent in Spanish (the Caribbean/Venezuelan dialect, I have a hard time understanding the Mexican dialect). On occasion, my mind doesn't get quite into gear and I'll throw out some grammatical barbarisms in Spanish, because I'm thinking in English.

Being Spanish is a Romance language, French, Italian and Portuguese are linguistically similar, so I have no problem understanding them, though I don't speak 'em very well.

I can understand German and can transliterate Russian and Greek.

CatStarESP4 07-17-2003 10:39 PM

I can speak some German, French, Italian and Spanish. However, when I speak German, French or Italian, my parents observe that I speak with hardly an accent. When I speak Spanish, I have an accent. Could someone explain this strange phenomenom to me?

I used to be pretty decent with French. My Spanish is good enough to get by with. Used to be an international trade major. Haven't had an opportunity to use that French in awhile. Don't anticipate one in the immediate future either.. Spanish though I get to bumble with about every day.

SparkliiQTMTSU 07-17-2003 11:29 PM

I know some french and Im pretty fluent in german or at least I used to be before I moved out of my moms house lol. My two little sisters are half german so my mom speaks it all the time. its funny too b/c she will be talking in english and then all of a sudden just start saying things in german. but anyways yeah so german mainly.

GMUBunny 07-17-2003 11:31 PM

Je parle français couramment. Parfois je m'embrouille quand les autres gens parlent aussi le jeûne ;)

sigma3 07-17-2003 11:45 PM

I know some German, three years in high school and a semester in college. Going to take another semester in German. I'm also going to be taking two semesters of Spanish. However, the one language I want to learn is Italian and they don't offer it here.

Hey KDatUTC! Kundinggi apbo!!!!:D

swissmiss04 07-18-2003 12:22 AM

Francais est mon langue prefere, mais je parle arabie aussi. Francais est tres facile; je parle depuis 7 ans. Arabie est une langue nouvelle pour moi. Je le comprends bien, mais je ne parle pas bien. :)

Basically, French is my second language, and I'm taking up Arabic. It's really easy to learn as far as comprehension. Sometimes I have problems sticking words together intelligently so that's something to work on. Writing it is damn impossible!!! Reading is easier w/ time, but remember how to do what letters when is by far the most difficult aspect of the language. But I do love writing things because it's sooo pretty!! And there's no such thing as "silent letters" so I at least have that going for me.

tinydancer 07-18-2003 12:36 AM

I know just enough Spanish and French to be dangerous. I can understand Spanish fairly well if people don't talk too fast. My hispanic students often get an answer in English but they know I understood them. Sometimes I mix the two and my speech comes out in Franish. Poor little kids just look at me.

Re: In Which Languages are you Fluent?

I took Spanish in high school, but it was the biggest joke class. It was taught by the baseball coach, and of course half the team was in the class, so all we talked about was baseball.

The only thing I can say is Spanish is "Alada a la izquierda deso burro esta un feugo." (sp)

or:

the left side of your donkey is on fire.

Acually:
El lado izquierdo de su burro esta en fuego, LOL

Spanish is my first language. :D

sugar and spice 07-18-2003 09:58 AM

I'm not fluent in Spanish, but I'm decent at it. I studied it for seven years but I haven't had a class in a year and a half so it's starting to leave me. I'm learning Italian right now but I'm nowhere close to fluent.

LOL thank you! See, I told you I didn't learn anything in that class! :D

I know very random phrases in Italian, Latin, German, French, Hebrew, Sandskrit, Swahili, and Japanese. Most of them because I've sung songs in those languages. Japanese becuase I took Karate for years.

CutiePie2000 07-18-2003 10:58 AM

10 years ago, my German was pretty decent.
My French ain't bad, but I would say it's far from fluent.

I dabble a bit in Spanish....

BLUTANG 07-18-2003 11:36 AM

German is my second language. :)

Skchickie 07-18-2003 11:48 AM

I speak English, Latin, and some French.
I can read and comprehend italian, just because I know latin and french.

LuaBlanca 07-18-2003 01:27 PM

My mom was born in the Azores, Portugal, and came to America in 1965. 1 month after I was born, she started to work full time again, and left me in the daytime care of my grandmother (her mother) who still to this day doesn't speak English. Thus, it was either "learn to speak Portuguese, or don't communicate with your primary daytime caretaker." Since Portuguese is A LOT easier to learn than English, I picked up on it much quicker and for a while my speech was a garbled mixed with horrible accents and the like. Eventually I straightened out, but even today if I'm speaking or thinking too quickly it comes out kind of messy and people look at me like I'm a freak.

DigitalAngel126 07-18-2003 01:44 PM

I'm not fluent in anything but English but I have a cousin with madd language skills..I don't remember what they all are, but she's fluent in SEVEN languages...I know French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Italian are five of them ,but I don't remember the other two. Isn't that crazy?? She's a teacher. :)

smiley21 07-18-2003 02:12 PM

That's me at 8am.... all of my french classes were early in the morning. I can't even speak english that early, much less another language!

KappaKittyCat 07-18-2003 03:09 PM

Munchkin03, I'm also fluent in Italian! I lived in Florence for four months.

I've got some Spanish, but now it's all this big Spitalish mush in my head. Hopefully I'll get it back when I go to Paraguay this winter.

I can't decide whether I want my next language to be German or Hebrew.

Rudey 07-18-2003 03:22 PM

English, French, Hebrew, Persian, American Sign Language, and limited Italian, Spanish, and Arabic.

ShaedyKD 07-18-2003 03:27 PM

ASL

I think I'm the first one to post my fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)! I'm working on my minor in ASL, and have interacted with deaf people for many hours. I'm taking advanced ASL this semester, and then Finger Spelling, where you spell out every word using letters, not signs.

Edited to clarify that I was the first to post about ASL. As Rudey mentioned, I am not the only person on here to know ASL! :p
