Riddle Me This....
This is the thread where all Riddles are welcome. I am going to start with some really old riddles to get the ball rolling and you can all guess and throw out another riddle.
Sorry, there are no prizes, but do know that if you answer a riddle right, you are smarter that the average Joe/Jill. :D Riddle #1: There are 2 American coins that equal 30 cents. One of them is not a nickel. How is that possible? Riddle #2: You know how birds fly in the "V" form. How come one side is long than the other? Riddle #3: Dr. Fisher and his son Arthur are in a car accident. Dr. Fisher is killed instantly. Arthur is taken to the hospital. The old surgeon says. Stop, I cant operate because this is my son Arthur. How is this possible? and last, but not least Riddle #4: A plane crashes so that half of the plane is in the US and the other half is in Canada. Where would you bury the survivors? Thats all for now....Have fun! Q |
I know 3 out of 4...
#1 One of the coins is a quarter which is not a nickel.
#2 There are more birds on that side? Wasn't sure about this one. #3 The surgeon is Authur's Mom #4 You don't bury survivors! |
Okay I don't know about #2 but:
#1. One of them is not a nickel, so it's a quarter. It says noting about both coins not being nickels. #3. The surgeon is his mother. #4. You don't bury survivors. DUH!!:D ETA: I must have been writing at the same time as RedVelvet. #2 is a stumper. :confused: |
LOL #2 - There are more birds on that side!
Good one! |
Very Good
All of you got #2 right.
Here are more and feel free to add your own. 1) A woman has 7 children, half of them are boys. How can this be possible? 2) A farmer and his hired help were carrying grain to the barn. The farmer carried one sack of grain and the hired help carried two sacks. Who carried the heavier load and why? 3) George, Helen, and Steve are drinking coffee. Bert, Karen, and Dave are drinking soda. Using logic, is Elizabeth drinking coffee or soda? 4) There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time? Thats all for now...see if you can answer these. Q |
1. All of them are boys, so half are boys and so is the other half.
2. The farmer's load was heavier because he carried a sack of grain, the help only carried two sacks with nothing in them. 3. Elizabeth is drinking coffee. All of the coffee drinkers have two "E's" in there name, while the soda drinkers only have one. 4. Startling, starting, staring, string, sting, sing, sin, in, I I guess you can tell what my teachers used to do with us when they ran out of work to assign, but I loved it. I have a couple of old ones you've probably heard before. 1. You are in a race and you overtake the 2nd person, what place are you in? 2. What is greater than God, more evil than the Devil, the poor have it, the rich need it, and if you eat it you'll die. |

Thanks for the backup, FeeFee and Eclipse! Sometimes my brain desn't work that fast! :D Sometimes I am guilty of what I accuse my students of when they try brainteasers. I always teel them, "You're thinking too hard!" The answers usually seem obvious and then you feel crazy when you get it wrong. It's cool. I like to learn!! I just bought a book of brainteasers and stuff for my students. They really work the brain.

Caution: this riddle requires math
For all you math majors and algebra buffs, I got a stumper of a riddle for you:
A mother is 21 years older than her son. In six years she will be 5 times older than her son. Using x = age of the mother and y = age of the son: WHERE IS THE FATHER? |

(hint: try solving the math equation first). Note: You must show your work in order to get credit :D |
x= age of mom
y= age of son x = 21 + y (mom is 21 years older than the son) (x + 6) = 5 (y + 6) (in 6 years, mom will be five times older than the son) substitute the known value of x (that's 21+y) 21 + y + 6 = 5(y + 6) add like terms and multiply to get 27 + y = 5y + 30 subtract 30 from each side -3 + y = 5y subtract y from each side -3 = 4y divide by 4 -3/4 = y since we're talking about years -3/4 x 12 months= -9 months the father is "inside" the mother :) |
Quote:
x=age of mother y=age of son So you're saying that the mother is 21 years older than the son? that means that x is 21+y... in 6 years she will be 5 times older then him.. so that means that she is dead or something? but anyway, in 6 years: x+6 will equal y+6 times 5.....(x+6)=(y+6)5 so if you use x=21+y in this equation then you get 21+y+6=5y+30.. and when you let it simmer you get 27+y=5y+30 and then -3=4y so y=-3/4. and since that doesnt answer anything iam going to stop here and say the mother is dead lol |
that was a good one.. i guess i quit too soon lol!

An example of a pornographic math riddle - LOL.

Another math riddle:
A monk has a very specific ritual for climbing up the steps to the temple. First he climbs up to the middle step and meditates for 1 minute. Then he climbs up 8 steps and faces east until he hears a bird singing. Then he walks down 12 steps and picks up a pebble. He takes one step up and tosses the pebble over his left shoulder. Now, he walks up the remaining steps three at a time which only takes him 9 paces. How many steps are there? it took me a while to figure this out |

And a few riddles: 1.In a large western city, 80% of the phone numbers are listed, 20% of the phone numbers are businesses, and 20% of the phone numbers start with the numeral "2". If you were to take a random sample of 1000 phone numbers from the city's phone book, how many numbers would you expect to be unlisted, non-business phone numbers that start with a numeral other than "2"? 2.How many legs does an elephant have if you count his trunk as a leg? 3.A man left home running. He ran a ways and then turned left, ran the same distance and turned left again, ran the same distance and turned left again. When he got home there were two masked men. Who were they? 4.There was an airplane crash, every single person died, but two people survived. How is this possible? 5.The peacock is a bird that does not lay eggs. How do they get baby peacocks? 6. Before Mt. Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain in the world? |
i got it after the hint. the "middle step" tells you it's an odd number. even numbers don't have a middle
the bird sings on step 33 (btw, the middle step is 25 (33 - 8)) he walks down 12 steps and picks up a pebble 33 - 12 = 21 He takes one step up and tosses the pebble over his left shoulder 21 + 1 = 22 Now, he walks up the remaining steps three at a time which only takes him 9 paces 3 x 9 = 27; 27 + 22 = 49 |
