Trolls

Every now and then someone new pops up on here that people think is a troll or just here to stir up trouble. Everyone gets mad at them and a mini-war starts.

So my question is, if you think someone is just here to be a pain in the arse, why respond at all? Especially, why respond with anger or annoyance? Because if you believe that trouble is what they're here to start, why give them the satisfaction of getting it? They're probably enjoying themselves as we work up steam! I know that being pissed off at stupid people is part of human nature, but I think that overcoming the urge to tell someone just what you think of them is one of the refinements of civilization that GLOs are part of upholding.

Just my 2 cents.

AchtungBaby80 07-16-2003 01:03 PM

I think it's because it's summertime and the heat makes us all a little cranky. ;)

Steeltrap 07-16-2003 01:05 PM

I am trying to take your advice

There have been a handful of new GCers who have come here to stir up trouble, very true. And let me tell you, I sometimes struggle to ignore threads. But I think that I tell myself that I'm 38 years old and am too old, too tired, too angry to fight with those whose knowledge base is rather limited.

AMEN, sister!

The FREAKS come out in the SUMMER!!

librasoul22 07-16-2003 02:45 PM

Fuzzie Alum you are my new best friend for starting this thread, lol. Like 99% of the problems on GC could be avoided if people just ignored the troublemakers. Me on the other hand, I like to stir things up now and again, lol. But when people are obviously attention whoring, I usually ignore them.

SATX*APhi 07-16-2003 02:48 PM

I agree with FuzzieAlum. I almost always try to avoid responding to people who obviously come to stir trouble. I know that some of you may not want to ignore these instigators, and if that’s your choice, fine. But why? It is not that difficult to just ignore them and move on to the next thread. If you are one of these people, there is no reason for you to be complaining about this person’s presence on GC when you are only feeding their return to return to GC.

PM_Mama00 07-16-2003 02:49 PM

Honestly, cuz there's nothing else exciting goin on in GCland. I suggest that Lifesaver make more exciting threads about his life's stories.

Munchkin03 07-16-2003 02:50 PM

When I saw this thread, I thought it was about those Russ trolls that were so popular in the early 1990s. I really haven't given the people coming on to start drama too much attention.

Kristin AGD 07-16-2003 02:57 PM

This is the smartest thread I have seen. It is like therapy for compulsive helpers.

I am proud to say I have not responded to an annoying gc'er for almost 20 hours.

It has been really hard. :D

I thought so too. Oh well.....:o

FuzzieAlum 07-16-2003 05:59 PM

I just want to add that I'm not trying to hold myself up as a model of deportment. I sometimes feel like Alice in Dilbert, struggling to control my "fist of death," when I read some of the stuff that gets posted!

Understood and I see no hypocrisy. Sometimes I lose it. But it just gets old when you see ignorant, provocative posts on any topic.

PiKA2001 07-16-2003 06:23 PM

Now are you talking about people who post that look like trolls? Cuz ugly can't be fixed, but bad posts can be deleted!

Wow Rick... you've really been on a roll.

I like the word ignorant. It describes so many things.

Oh man I used to LOVE those things! I remember back in grade school every time I would get upset b/c my mom NEVER let me spend the night at my friends houses she would buy me a new troll doll for my collection to make me feel better. I had so many of those things. I distinctly remember that they smelled funny, I don't know why I had them close enough to my face to be able to smell them, but they did smell odd. And their hair fell out a lot too. Oh well. /hijack

wreckingcrew 07-16-2003 07:42 PM

A perfect example was the thread on GreekLife where some 'girl' supposedly posted a link of her ex naked. Last time i looked it had 20 replies. That's exactly what that person wanted, because even if all 20 people called them a loser, it still kept the thread at the top of the page.

A little self-restrant people, if someone's already called out a 'troll' for a stupid post, let their words stand for you and resist the urge to throw in your 2 cents.

Unless of course it's about republicans or Texas, then we can keep bumping it all day or night :D

Kitso
KS 361 useless posts in reply to 'troublemakers' i've seen on GC

[hijack ] anyone else ever have those ugly troll earings?? [/hijack ] anyway, why don't people just report posts that seriously offend them? that's what i've started doing. posts in threads that are arguing differnt points of view are no problem to me, but links to naked people showing up on GC evey two or three weeks is seriously starting to get on my nerves.

Trust me, we would've loved to delete that thread the moment it started. But mods can only "mod" in their designated forum. It just so happened that the Greek Life mods weren't on around when it happened. Or else it would've been gone in a second. I think people just wanted to have a little fun with it because it was pathetic :)

Re: Trolls

Well if people respond they are obviously just a little slow or just immature.

Or maybe they are just Reverse-Trolls. In the sense that they love drama but like to be "in the right" so its ok for them to even worse than the troll as long as someone else "started it".

Honestly, many times the people thata re responding create more drama than the so-called-troll.

HYJACKED:

My sister came to a church thing with me once and this guy said she looked like a troll and so the rest of the time she was called "Trollica" (her name is Jessica).

PiKA2001 07-17-2003 12:27 AM

There is this lady at my work who looks like a troll , but her nickname is " old lady muskrat"

Tom Earp 07-17-2003 12:45 AM

I think you GCers are getting totally imature and katty! This is totally uncalled for as I am the Head one on immuturree on thread!

What is a TROLL anyway!! Is that your way of making fun of us short people!!!

"Remeber, short people will once again rule the world, it just takes us longer to get there!":p

PM_Mama00 07-17-2003 09:51 AM

Tom... short people will most definately rule the world one day :p .

That poor girl. ;)

I find it hilarious how everyone used to accuse all of the "troublemakers" of being the V's. :D

carnation 07-17-2003 01:00 PM

Not all, Dionysus. Believe me, as soon as some of your alter egos popped up, the mods were onto you and later we got more sophisticated at identifying certain trolls. But maybe you can tell us where the fun is in "trolling"...frankly, I don't find any fun in upsetting people.

And Chrissy3912! What a loser! And guess which recent poster she sounds exactly like--big attitude and all!

PM_Mama00 07-17-2003 01:20 PM

Chrissy is short for Cristina.

Carnation... I freakin love you! "I don't even care anymore" or something of that sort. You seriously are the shit!

TTT

BUMP.

Seems like our GC's been invaded by more troublemakers.

PiEp299 08-06-2003 08:35 PM

I know, I was just being sarcastic as usual.

SATX*APhi 08-06-2003 08:49 PM

I don't see that person as being an intentional trouble maker, or troll.

Does the Grapist count as a "Troll" I find him funny...we should keep him...well at least not call him a troll...he makes me giggle...

lol ;)

librasoul22 08-07-2003 12:10 PM

All I have ever seen from shultzz are stupid comments to sex-related threads. I don't really care to extensively check his history because he isn't really worth my time.

I have a theory that "The Grapist" is a certain woman with a great sense of humor. I know your secret but I won't call you out :)

Oh and in Scandinavian culture trolls and gnomes are some serious stuff. My grandmother had some whacked out plates with gnomes on them. There was one under the bridge when the Billy Goats Gruff tried to pass.
