Any Canadians out there?

Hey all!

Just wondering if I'm the only one repping Canadians out here?! :p I know I saw some posts for Canadian GPhiB's and Pi Phi's! Lemme know which sorority/chapter/city you're in! Maybe I'll even bump into some UWO greeks here!

CC1GC 07-14-2003 11:12 AM

UWO wouldn't post, too snobby...lol.

There's some of us here, i'm a UofO alum and had a cross-town rival in CanadianTeke - but he's gone until oct.

Lady Pi Phi 07-14-2003 11:16 AM

Canadian Greek here!!!

Pi Phi from the University of Guelph...rivals with UWO (heeheehee)

Canadian AOII 07-14-2003 12:18 PM

BTW...

Did I mention that I actually go to UWO? ;)

hahaha, i kid, because i love!
my twin brother is going into his 6th yr. at western - since he's been there, he's held a very sanctimonious attitude toward other universities.

Sistermadly 07-14-2003 01:53 PM

I'm a Canadian permanent resident, does that count?

Oops, my mistake.
I think there was a U of T Pi Phi but I can't remember.
There was also a U of T Tri Delta around for a while.

CutiePie2000 07-14-2003 02:32 PM

Hey Lady Pi Phi,
I tried to PM you but your mailbox has been perpetually fun.
I was alumna initiated at age 30 into Delta Gamma at Wilfrid Laurier University (March 2001). I remember taking the Greyhound back from Waterloo to Toronto and we made a stop in Guelph and I remember thinking, "there's a Pi Phi chapter here!"

So, my question is, being the only Greeks at U of Gu, do you guys get out to Laurier at all? I was just wondering. Let me know if there is any cross-campus interacting at all with Guelph and the 2 Waterloo universities (there is a KKG from Waterloo and I was asking her if they do anything with the Laurier Greeks, etc. Her name is Lisa and she's very nice...kappaloo I think is her name on GC)

FWIW: I miss Toronto and I am hoping to get back there in the autumn...more work opportunities, more stuff to do, more everything!

It's always nice to meet other Canadians on GC - I did meet and have lunch with gphi2k2 (Leslie) a few times when I still lived in Toronto!

Hey CutiePie2000,

Yep, there is a chapter of Pi Phi at U. of T and the Tri-Delts are still on campus as well.

Although I live and work in Toronto, I advise at Guelph, which is my alma mater. Yes, we do a few things with Laurier and Waterloo, but due to risk management issues, we don't get out there too often - we need to take buses if we're doing an organized trip and that gets expensive when you have a small chapter.

Back when I was active, we used to have an annual wine and cheese at the Palace in Guelph and invite all the area greeks to join us.

BTW I have absolutely no idea when and where the rivalry btwn U of G and UWO started, but I'd love to see us do more with the greeks there.

Jill1228 07-14-2003 02:45 PM

I will be a resident in 2 weeks...does that count?
Moving from Blaine, WA to North Delta/Surrey, BC

cherub 07-14-2003 02:46 PM

:D:D:D:D:D:D

Sorry Lady Pi Phi, I answered for you ;)

Looking forward to seeing you back in September!!

PPL

Canadian AOII 07-14-2003 03:05 PM

Being a Canadian resident is good enough for me! ;) We have a Pi Phi at Western too, awesome girls. Howz the DU chapter at Guelph? Hey, do any of you guys do a bid day at the end of recruitment? Western didn't last year (at least AOII didn't) but I really wanna have one this year? If yes, what did you guys do?

Lady Pi Phi 07-14-2003 03:18 PM

That's okay Cherub, it's all good :) I can't wait till september!

Don't even get me started on the DU's :D. Actually they're a great bunch of guys. We do a lot of things with them. We have to stick together because we're the only greeks on campus.
We didn't do a Bid Day where we have events of the like. When you're the only one campus, I don't know if there's really much point. Although it might be fun if we did one.
I wish our campus still had Kappa Alpha Theta and Beta Theta Pi. It would great if we had more greeks on campus. Maybe one day they'll come back.

eta: P.S My mailbox is cleaned out now

bcdphie 07-14-2003 03:53 PM

I'm a DPhiE alum from UBC and still kicking around Vancouver

Jill1228 07-14-2003 03:55 PM

Cool! We just so happened to be married to Canucks!

I definately feel your situation. We Waterloo Kappas used to do stuff with your chapter and the Laurier sororities, but we've fallen out of it - a big portion of our chapter is hoping to expand our cross-greek interaction next year!

MooseGirl 07-14-2003 06:17 PM

Hey!

I'm a Phi Sig from U Windsor!

I'll be going to UWO for grad school this september so I'm excited to see how greek life is up there!
I know noone in London, and I've only driven by the campus once, so I'll be pretty lonely and lost for awhile.

So, If you're at UWO, pm me - I love making new friends!

ADPiSAI 07-14-2003 06:31 PM

I'm an ADPi from Bishop's University!

I'm not really Canadian (but hey, I had no choice about where I was born, unfortunately...), but I go to school there, so that counts for something, right?

on a completely random side note, anyone want to mail me some Tim Horton's goodies? I'm going through complete withdrawal!

cherub 07-14-2003 06:40 PM

My best friend from grade school has lived in the US for the past 4 years and when she comes back to town, she stocks up on Second Cup hot chocolate!

ForeverDiamond, I understand. Not sure Tim Bits would travel well across the boarderm though ;)

ADPiSAI 07-14-2003 06:44 PM

mmm... Second Cup hot chocolate -- you're killing me here!!

just one month and a week or so...

Sistermadly 07-14-2003 07:41 PM

This is something I've always wanted to ask, so please don't take it the wrong way.

How do you reconcile being Canadian and a member of fundamentally American organizations? Is it a concern at all?

CutiePie2000 07-14-2003 07:56 PM

Not for me, because "striving to be a better person" is unanimous to humanity, not just USA ideals.

That's an excellent question! Of course, I can only answer on my experiences. I am so proud to be a Pi Phi and I know that every other Canadian on this board is equally proud to be a member of their GLO. I don't see the "American"ism of the fraternity as that much of an issue. The fundamentals Pi Phi were founded on are universal.

It can be challenging, especially with those of us that don't have greek friendly campuses, although that's not uniquely Canadian. What gets me the most is the exchange rate. For example, since there's not real greek store in Canada, we have to order online or buy in the US and that can get expensive. Also, with our new member guides, we're required to buy one for every NM, which gets costly when you factor in duty and shipping costs. Our risk management issues are different, since the drinking age is 19, and our insurance liability is different as well.

I appreciate when my sisters to the south recognise Pi Phi as an international organization - when you have 4 chapters in all of the country vs. the 133 or so in the US, that recognition goes a long way. But it would have been nice if the book my sister got as a new graduate wasn't totally US. She can't use most of it, since it talks about renting, income tax etc. that has absolutely nothing to do with the way things are done here. I know there are only 4 chapters and producing a seperate book for us would be really costly, but at least send a letter acknowledging that while they understand it's not as applicable, they still wanted her to get a copy.

Also, when I went to update my alum info for the directory, the 1-800 number wasn't accessible from Canada. I ended up having to contact the publisher directly.

Small prices to pay, though, DEFINITELY!! :D

Sistermadly 07-14-2003 08:14 PM

That's an excellent response Cherub - thank you. What's strange is that even though I'm from the States, I feel like a "Canadian" Alpha Phi. All of the things you mentioned, from the exchange rate, to the 800 numbers, to articles in our magazine that deal with financial planning being US-focused are all things that I notice more since I live in Canada.

cherub 07-14-2003 08:32 PM

In keeping with the theme of this thread, quoting the Globe and Mail ad campaign, "Perspective is everything" :D

Canadian AOII 07-15-2003 09:56 AM

Sistermadly,

Granted I've only been greek for a year for awhile I did feel a bit outside of the loop w/ the whole frat/sorority thing being a huge deal in the states but not so much w/ Canada. Anyway AOII has done an awesome job to help Canadian chapters feel as much a part of the group as American chapters (we get our badge for straight currency exchange...yay!). An alumna (Shala Berry - I guess a bunch of you may know who she is) wrote an awesome article in To Dragma (the AOII magazine) so here's a link to it if you're interested in reading it!

http://www.alphaomicronpi.org/conten...agmaframe.html

Its in the Summer 2002 issue, article is called "oh Canada"

Sistermadly 07-15-2003 09:59 AM

Hi Canadian AOII -

Yes, I've talked to Shala! (I guess it's okay to let the cat out of the bag now -- AOII was the other group I was looking at for Alumnae Initiation. :) ) The "Oh Canada" article was one of the first ones I read when I was going through the process. I remember being impressed that AOII offered fees at par, and posted a thread asking other Canadian Greeks whether their organizations had the same policy.

canadajen 07-15-2003 10:15 AM

one more here!

Guess my sn gives it away! ;) ... I'm an UBC AGD alumna living in Vancouver for another 5 weeks, then it's off to Ottawa for me!

Yay Canadian Greeks!! :D

Fraternally,
~ Jen

AGD - DZ '97

MooseGirl 07-15-2003 11:36 AM

speaking of "oh canada" (and I did read the article online yay!)

I rememebr when I had to sing it at convention ~ it was horrible!!! I'm an alto, and I cannot sing; the other chic was a sopran - there was no way I could stay in key standing next to her!!!
It was so embarrasing - but at least it was onlyin front of 300-400 sisters!! :p

At least they care enough to include our anthem and flag (although one year we had to point out to them that they were missing it!)
Quote:

As basically stated before - our values and our founding principles are what bind us together. It does not matter what country one is from, where one lives or what religion one believes.

On the admin side of things, it can be tough. The whole money issue is sometimes a battle. But, I have an insider who says things will be a bit better this year.
I don't know what else to expect from them. They do a great job already.

The only thing I'm working on is getting everyone to say "international" - no one, even my chapter sisters, says it. Sometimes I don't mind, because it is a hassle to change (when they've just finished changing just about all other terminology), but then, I'm like, heck, we are international, so we might as well say it!

Sistermadly 07-15-2003 12:16 PM

I wonder if the NPC will ever become the IPC or the NAPC (North American Panhellenic Conference)...

Hey, that's cool! Did you speak to Shala about attending the CIFC (Canadian Interfraternal Conference)? I would love to go but it is always so far away. I think she is still the CIA President. Woo hoo, go Shala!

Sistermadly 07-15-2003 07:00 PM

No, I basically peppered her with questions about AOII. :D But I'd love to be more involved with CIFC.. is there much information about it at canadiangreeks.com?

CutiePie2000 07-15-2003 07:01 PM

I haven't seen anything further but that would be the place to look, when the time draws nearer.

Jill1228 07-15-2003 07:03 PM

Sistermadly, check your email :)

AAgammagirl 07-15-2003 11:13 PM

Hey CanadianAOII-
i'm the new recruitment advisor for the Gamma Phi Beta Chapter at UWO.

Canadian AOII 07-16-2003 09:46 AM
