Go, Venus and Serena!
Even if you aren't a tennis fan, you probably have heard of Venus and Serena Williams. They won their matches yesterday at Wimbledon and they are one step closer to winning the title. Unfortunately, they now have to play each other and only one can go on to the finals. I watched Venus play yesterday and she is simply awesome!

I missed the matches...I just wished it had worked out that they would meet in the finals instead of the semifinals. It is an accomplishment just getting as far as they are now. They are both awesome!
|
I watched the matches yesterday. TNT aired the repeats last night. They both are wonderful athletes. I was SO happy Venus beat M. Hingis. The commentators kept saying that Hingis is a "thinker". What about Venus? Does she not have any brains? Or is she just this robot out there hitting balls? I was like come on... I even shed a couple of tears when Venus hit that ace in the end...
I like tennis, I played 2 years of it in high school, but when Venus, then Serena came along, I got back on the bandwagon and have been "watching" them every since. It is unfortunate that they have to play each other, but there is a better chance that ONE of them will make it to the final and have a better chance to win, now that the number one player has been defeated. You know the media will want to play this as a sibling rivalry thing, etc. trying to bring negative energy... but the sisters have said that they are going out there to have fun and "perform". These girls are very intelligent, positive and culturally minded. There parents have done a wonderful job with them. They will be going far, even after tennis. GOOD LUCK, GIRLS! I will be in front of the tube watching. It will be HOTTEST thing on! Sorry for the long post! |
Hey Sorors,
What time is the match on Thursday? I caught Venus' match. She is sooo strong. I wish I had the discipline to look like that. Please post the time of the matche if you have that info. Thanks, Happy Day After The 4 of July! ------------------ TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN....MUCH IS EXPECTED. |
I think it may be 2pm eastern. Don't quote me on that. NBC gives a late night update at 10:35 pm central time, you could check that. I saw where the sisters beat Martina Navrotolova, sp? (you know that player that would win every match back in the '70's and '80's)and some other women in the doubles match today. I think it was the semifinal round. They are really on a roll! Martina said that she really did not play well, because she had not played in four years and she was not familiar with their playing "styles". Okay, whatever you say! LOL
|
Hi All,
Just wanted to add my $19.20 worth. The media and players need to give the sisters their"props".....they are just awesome!! African-Americans are doing quite well in sports that are traditionally not ones that many of us participate in or even follow. It does a heart good to see our youth featured on more than just the 11:00 news in handcuffs!! |
let me preface by saying this, ladies put on the ear plugs cuz Ima screamin'...lol
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! THAT HENGIS CHICK LOST. I CAN'T STAND HER!! ANYONE WHO SAW THE MATCH, DID YOU SEE THAT ACE!!!!???!!!! I WAS SCREAMING FROM THE ROOF TOPS. whew, I am so looking forward to tomorrow. Sisters are doin' IT for themselves. I hear their father won't be there. I don't blame him. Too nerve racking. Gotta run. SMOOCHES http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. |
COOMMMPPTTOON IS IN THE HOUSE---FOR ALL THAT COULDN'T HEAR THAT SHOUT. I SAID COMPTON IS IN THE HOUSE.
YES MY GIRLS FROM COMPTON ARE REPRESENTING TO THE FULLEST. As a proud Compton native I have been following the William's sisters from the beginning. Every since my mom and I realized that those were the two girls we used to see playing tennis with their father at East Compton park where I hung out as a kid. AKA2D91. Soror I know now I am not paranoid. I thought I was the only one that caught on to that great athlete/great thinker analogy. I am so sick of this racist crap. All we are are athletes. It makes me sick. A friend told me I should call NBC and complain. What do you think? When is their father going to get props? Isn't he a thinker? No real tennis training and trained his own daughters to be top athletes, with little money to begin with. I know next year I am going to a grand slam tournament where they are planning. I have to see and support them in person and maybe I will take my grandfather because he loves tennis too. And I love the way Venus has branched off from the beads. She looks so beautiful. Venus and Serena if you are listening.....When are you coming back to Compton? ------------------ Aim for the moon,.... if you miss you'll be among the stars. [This message has been edited by chAKAlate (edited July 05, 2000).] |
I think the match is at 1:00 EST. today.
|
I love the girls they are truly awesome. I didn't too much like the commentators for the Hingis/Williams match because Chris Evert (Hingis' mentor) kept giving props to Hingis and didn't say to much about Venus...I guess Venus had to SHUT HER UP!! YOU GO VENUS...lol I already know who won the match (between the sisters) but won't say until you guys watch it.
God Bless, Ali |
Yeah Soror, call, email, write the NBC headquarters...people goes too far sometimes. Mr. Williams will not really get the props he deserves, unless it is from "us". That is the problem...Venus nor Serena had an "official" coach that had tennis background. I must give a shout out to those from N. Louisiana. Mr. Williams moved his family (before Venus and Serena) were born TO Compton FROM Louisiana, like many others have done.
Anyway... I am sure Mr. Williams is not worried about being "accepted", because he sees, he knows that the work he has done with his daughters, on and off the court speaks for itself. |
I just read some of the reports posted on the net about the match. Soror DG, I agree with you that they need to stop hating!
|
Hello all, I took this from an aol link today. Enjoy!
10 Things You May Not Know About the Williams Sisters 1) Venus' family nickname is 'Ace'. Serena's is 'Momma Smash'. 2) Serena has two dogs - Jackie and Starr. When asked if she thought it was difficult for her parents to watch her play Venus, she replied: "I can't imagine. I know I would be heartbroken if my little Jackie had to play Starr." 3) Venus loves horror movies but finds them extremely frightening and often has to leave the theater. 4) Serena doesn't like 1980s pop music, but she has a penchant for Vanilla Ice. 5) Venus' other favorite sports are surfing and sumo wrestling. 6) Serena says one of the reasons for her success this year is the number of cheeseburgers she's been eating. 7) Venus, whose full name is Venus Ebone Starr Williams, is currently studying for a fashion degree in Florida. 8) Serena's favorite color is purple. Venus' is blue. 9) Venus and Serena are both Jehovah's Witnesses. 10) Serena is allergic to peanuts and "crazy people". |
LOL AKA2D'91!
I am watching this game as we speak (at work http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif - I tried to find out what time it came on and my friend told me who won. It is a delayed broadcast so I guess it was announced on the net. Oh well, I am still going to watch! |
Mizzkes,
Thanks for the list. I also read in a magazine article that they both speak several foreign languages fluently. You go, girls! |
Here is a short review of the game from Wimbledon.com http://www.wimbledon.com/news/articl...400507f2c.html
|
I am sitting here watching the match and listening to the commentators or should I say the Venus haters talk about the match and I have come to the conclusion that Chris just does not like Venus. That Chris just can't find a positive thing to say about Venus. She doesn't feel that the girls have paid thier dues because they didn't play junior tennis like Hingis and other players. SHe even had the nerve to do a little gossiping....She mentioned it had been some talk about the matches between the sisters being staged! Anything, to not give them their props!!
|
They are just jealous. It is not Venus nor Serena's fault that the commentator was not good enough to be a well known tennis player... whatever.
|
Yeah - Chris is getting on my nerves too.
She just won't give them their props! She probably knows either one would have whipped her behind when she was playing pro! |
I am not too into Tennis, but I get my watch on from time to time...
Does anyone have an e-mail address or phone number that we can call and complain to 'The Powers that Be' about this mess that was said during the game? I am really upset that people don't have any composure - they are just straight jealous. Just because we are finally beginning to dominate all sports including Golf, and I am not a Tiger Fan, they are hating and it is SAD! Soror DG - Girl, I am with Soror AKA2D '91 no movie watching for us http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif You gave it all away, but I got nothing but love for ya soror. Soror AKA2D '91, use the smiles legend on the left hand side of the screen, and make sure in the options section smiles are NOT disabled. |
I am with 1blubaby on this. I just finished watching the match and I must say Chris must have had a gallon of Hater-ade before the match! I thought it was just me, Im glad that someone else caught that. It is obvious that these talented ladies did not need Junior tennis. They bypassed that step and moved on to bigger and better things. Did anyone notice how they went on and on about their father/coach not being there? Now, that struck me as odd also, but really, was it necessary to run that point into the ground the way they did?
|
Sorry, Diarra, but the Hater-ade commentator is/was a well-known tennis player. Chris Everett WAS a pro player, back in the 70's and early 80's.
The male commentator said she was going to give an analysis of the two siblings after the game, but Chris did say that whoever won this game would win Wimbleon. I am sure she had to bite her tongue for 20 minutes before she said that. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif I am so happy, I was able to enclose a smile in my post! I am happier than a.... thanks, Soror! [This message has been edited by AKA2D '91 (edited July 06, 2000).] |
Do you mean Chris Evert Loyd?
|
I sure do.
|
I did not know that SHE was the one bashing the Williams sisters. I am soooo disappointed in her. Of all tennis player I did not think that she would be so critical. Did she forget already how it was to be on the court? or is she bitter that now there are black sisters up in the ranks ( yes I went there!) what the heck!!!!!
|
Chris Evert was the commentator on NBC and Martina Navrotolova was the commentator on TNT...she was a hater too, especially after they beat her at doubles the other day!
|
I just read this, I didn't get to watch it, but Venus beat Serena today. I love them both, but I was kind of pulling for Serena. Oh well, I'm just happy that one of "us folks" will still be representing at Wimbledon.
Of course, the news report I read said that Venus beat Serena "in sloppy sets..." COME ON, get up off it and stop hating! |
Thanks, Soror...I know I can't go to a movie with you that you have already seen. LOL
I don 't know how to put the faces within my posts. 'Cause right now, I would be rolling my eyes! Luv Ya! |
Now this takes the cake....that Chris mentioned Mr. Williams always mentioned how the girls had to dodge bullets and the gang members to practice in Compton...as if the Dad was lying. We can tell that thing never been to no "Hood". She mentioned that she came from the ranks of "Public tennis courts". Now a white public tennis court is a heck of a lot different then a African-American public tennis court. Now grant it times are changing, but when Chris was in her youthful years I bet you 40 acres and a mule that she was not working out on "real"
public tennis court. Please excuse me my sister sorors in greekdom for posting so much on your site, but I really like this thread. |
Now we have to pray that Venus wins Wimbledon. Not only she deserves it but I can' t wait to see what these two old chicks, are going to say about that!. Alright ladies let's start praying!...
|
Did anyone watch Dateline last night? I swear, this show seemed like it could have been taped in the 60's, before the civil rights movement. The entire segment was based on the impact that Venus' and Serena's accomplishments will have on the black community. It was totally absurd http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif. They interviewed a former African-American female tennis player (I forgot her name) and it seemed as if they were badgering her to say something bad about the Williams sisters, but of course she didn't. Ted Koppel kept referring to their playing style as "in your face tennis" and insinuated that that type of play had no place in the whitewashed world of tennis. Then he went on to voice his bewilderment as to how the sisters turned out to be so "articulate" considering where they were raised and how their parents talk. I was amazed the whole time I was watching. I just can't believe that in the year 2000, white folks are still in awe that we are dynamic, intelligent, talented people that don't need to assimilate or wear a mask in order to be accepted by them.
I say, "Go 'head Venus and Serena. Keep doing us proud!" |
It amazes me as well that people still think the way they do, especially those who you think should know better. Then again, maybe they are letting their true colors show.

Their father said it would happen...
SERENA BEATS VENUS: Compton-bred sisters ranked No. 1 and No. 2.
Serena and Venus Williams (Jun. 10, 2002) *The Williams sisters are dominating women's tennis. Serena and Venus have won six of the past 11 major tennis events. The latest event was last Saturday's French Open final, which Serena won 7-5, 6-3, over her older sibling Venus. "Hopefully we can build a rivalry and we'll be able to do this a lot," said Serena. "Make a legacy, then retire champions." In the new rankings that are out today, Venus is No. 1 and Serena is No. 2. They are the first siblings to sit 1-2. Their top rankings mean they may face each other again, including during the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. |
MAKES ME WANNA HOLLER!
HC this morning I was watching the today show and Matt Lauer was interviewing John McEnroe about his new book, "Are you kidding me?"
HC this old man had the nerve to say he could easily beat either of the Williams sisters if they'd just meet him on the court? HC the fool went on to say so could any male player on the tour? HC this is just too much to believe! McEnroe has a 16 yr old kid, can he worry about just raising the child right, puh-leaze! Or, how about he just worry about why his ex-wife called his entire book bull ish and said he is the cruelest person she ever met! How about he worry about anything else besides HATING on the numbers one and two seeds in the world!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! ....and honestly, I would just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to see either of those matches! |
I was delighted to see this on Saturday morning. I was in my hair salon watching it. I was ecstatic to see Serena win! Either way, I would have been pleased. I think that it isn't easy for a big sister to play her lil' sis. Big sisters out there...you know that it isn't easy being competitive with your lil' sis.
I loved that they were both speaking French at the end. I was like...ya'll go 'head and show the French watcha working with! :) But really, I love what these two young women are bringing to the sport....as the sports announcers said...they look like the Queen of Sheba...and they aren't far from it! They are rising to a place of tennis royalty. |
Williams v. Williams at Wimbeldon again!
Don't forget to watch the rematch Saturday 9AM EST.
Congratulations to Serena.....today's win places her #1 in the rankings. |

Since when did John McEnroe's thoughts matter to me??
I feel he has had it for the Williams sisters since the very beginning. He never has anything nice to say about them at all. But Martina Navritilova and Chris Evert usually check him and keep him in his place. It's a shame that the best out there always get booed. What I don't understand is how could a stalker of Serena be set free just hours after being caught at the entrance to Wimbeldon? His ass should have been kept in jail until the Williams ladies was safely on a plane home after taking England by storm.....again!

COMPTON, Calif. (Sept. 14) - An older sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams was shot to death Sunday following a dispute in suburban Los Angeles, authorities said.
Yetunde Price, 31, was with a man in a sport utility vehicle shortly after midnight and ''somehow they had become involved in a confrontation with the local residents,'' said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Richard Pena. Sheriff's deputies searching for three people believed to be involved in the shooting surrounded a house in Compton at about 6 a.m., but it turned out to be empty. No arrests had been made by midday. Venus and Serena's agent, Carlos Fleming, said the family was en route to California. Serena has been in Toronto to film a guest role in the Showtime drama series ''Street Time.'' ''This is sad and very tragic news,'' WTA Tour chief executive Larry Scott said in a statement. ''The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the WTA Tour are with the entire Williams family at this difficult time.'' Price was shot in the upper torso. Deputies on patrol heard the gunshots and found Price, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The man who had been with her in the SUV wasn't injured and was being interviewed by authorities, Pena said. Neighbor Robert Miller, 49, said he heard about a dozen gunshots. Price was one of five Williams sisters who spent their early years in Compton, a crime-and poverty-ridden community where gang fighting has claimed many lives. Serena began playing tennis at age 5 1/2 on the neighborhood courts in Compton, coached by her father Richard. The family later moved to Florida, where Venus and Serena live in Palm Beach Gardens. Richard and their mother Oracene are divorced, and Price used her mother's maiden name. Price lived in Corona and worked as a personal assistant to her famous sisters. She was identified as a registered nurse and a business management major in the 2003 media guide for the WTA Tour. Serena, 21, and Venus, 23, both missed the U.S. Open earlier this month because of injuries. Neither has said when they will play next, although the season-ending WTA Tour championships in Los Angeles in November is a possibility. Serena, ranked No. 3 in the world, and sixth-ranked Venus have combined to win nine of the past 14 Grand Slam titles. They met in the final at five of the last six Slams, not including this year's U.S. Open. Serena won each of those times, and one or the other won every U.S. Open since 1999 until this year. The other Williams sisters are Lyndrea, an actress and singer; and Isha, a lawyer and singer. AP-NY-09-14-03 1758EDT Copyright 2003 The Associated Press. I heard the news about Yetunde's death this morning and it left me both  and :( . I still remember when the whole family was on the Oprah Winfrey show.
My prayers goes out to the Price/Williams family. :( |
