Amandamarie's rush thread

I know it's a little early to start, but I can't wait for rush to start! I mailed in my application today! I even had an Audrey Hepburn stamp for it, which I thought was really cute. Anyway, I'm rushing at Wichita State which has 4 NPC's. Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Phi and Delta Delta Delta. There are 2 rounds of open house on August 15-16, Skit Night on the 17th, Preference on the 18th and Bid Day on th 19th. With my summer grades, I should be at least .15 above the highest chapter's minimum. I already have appointments for hair & nails on the 7th, and eyebrows on th 14th. I've started to get some outfits lined up, If you guys would like to hear about them, I'd love to get some opinions. Anyway, I can't wait for rush to start, and to keep you guys updated on what happens!

Rose&WhiteGirl 07-10-2003 05:03 PM

Im sure youve had your eyebrows waxed before, but if you havent be careful with the wax being the day before rush...You may break out or even worse have the waxer make a mistake with no time to fix it!!! that would be a disaster...

texas*princess 07-10-2003 05:03 PM

YAY!!!

Best wishes!!! You have 4 amazing groups at your school!

I absolutely cannot wait until recruitment starts because I *LOVE* to hear all about them!!!

amandamarie 07-10-2003 05:12 PM

eyebrows

Oh yeah, I've had them done before! If I have them done too soon before rush, they'll be all grown back before bid day! :p

aephi alum 07-10-2003 05:15 PM

Good - a rush thread to fuel our addictions! :D

Good luck with rush - those are four great options.

What are you planning to wear?

amandamarie 07-10-2003 05:36 PM

Well I'm not sure if we get t-shirts for the first round, but I'm playing it safe and assuming we don't. My first three outfits, I'm not sure what order I'll wear them. One is a french blue sleeveless sweater with a cowl neck, a knee length khaki skirt, and black & brown slides. Next, a peach top with 1/2 sleeves, a pink/peach paisley skirt, and white kitten heels. And third is a black shell w/cardigan, red pinstripe skirt (just above knee) and either red or black slides. For prefs, I've got a gorgeous black dress, drapy neck that's about midcalf length. I don't have shoes for it yet, but I plan on breaking out the pearl necklace and earrings. I was also wanting to get some ideas on hair/makeup. I have pretty long hair, and am wanting some new things to do with it. Also, I don't usually wear much makeup. I'm planning on getting some of those oil absorbing sheets, but don't know what else to try. I love hearing from all of you!

This sounds ADORABLE!

What color is your hair?

WhiteDaisy128 07-10-2003 06:00 PM

Yay! I love Rush threads! Best of luck AmandaMarie! Your outfits sounds great! With a black dress for pref you might blend in with the sisters though, as they often wear back - so make sure to find a special way to stand out. Maybe a pretty flower in your hair or something. Yay! Enjoy rush, it's so much fun! I hope you find the place that is right for you! You have 4 great GLO's to pick from!

aephi alum 07-10-2003 06:07 PM

Those sound like good choices for outfits. I especially like that second one.

I will warn you that many sororities wear black dresses at pref, and probably a lot of PNMs will be wearing black, so you may not stand out as much if you wear black. Alpha Phi at my school wears white, I'm not sure if that's an Alpha Phi thing or just that chapter's tradition.

For your hair, a simple but elegant thing to do is to take the top half of your hair and pull it back with a clip while letting the rest of your hair hang free. You get that I-have-long-hair look without risking having your hair fly around, fly in your face, get out of place, etc.

amandamarie 07-10-2003 06:08 PM

My hair is very dark brown. I'm not sure about wearing a black dress either. I'm planning on talking to my rho chi about it, once we meet them. I love the flower in my hair idea, any other suggestions of how to make my (gorgeous) black dress stand out?

ajuhdg 07-10-2003 06:10 PM

YIPPEEE!!!! And so it begins! Good Luck, amandamarie! You'll have a blast, and definitely keep us all posted with every gory detail! LOL! Have fun!

You could try a brightly colored scarf, although I don't think that would work with your dress's neckline.

If you have an unusual jewelry item you might try that.

amandamarie 07-10-2003 06:15 PM

I don't know if this would work, but in the past at weddings, etc, I've found a cute neckscarf, put my hair in a low ponytail, and then loosely tied the scarf around it. I let the ends hang, I don't tie into some goofy bow. What do you think?

I totally concur with Rose& white girl. If you use any type of alphahydroxy cream on your face, waxing is not recommended ( you may lose some skin ) and sometime tweezing leave swelling.

Do try to get this done about a week in advance. :D

I think hair like that would be beautiful! Maybe with soft pink flowers. You might even be able to find a soft pink rhinestone necklace, like these:

Depending on the dress of couse...

And soft pink nails...

I know it sounds like a lot, but I think done right it could be perfect!

amandamarie 07-10-2003 06:33 PM

that hair is gorgeous! Would pink be a good idea since there's a chance I might be preffing DG? I'm planning on wearing pearls, so maybe white ones? Thanks so much, you guys are giving me loads of great ideas!

WhiteDaisy128 07-10-2003 06:36 PM

I said pink, just because I love Pink and Black together, but any color would be pretty I think. Plus, I'm a DG so I'm partial to pink anyway. I also thought pink might be pretty because you could do nails in pink too...as opposed to purple or yellow or orange, etc.

I think White would be pretty too though. I'm not a huge fan of pearls - I think they look so plain, but whatever floats your boat!! Tee hee!

Haha! I was looking at Claire's website, and thought..."this would really make me stand out!" Though not in a good way probably! How many sisters do you think would want to bid "fairy princess girl"? lol

WhiteDaisy128 07-10-2003 06:48 PM

Hahaha! That's great! I mean, not in the real you should wear it way, but it certainly is funny!

texas*princess 07-10-2003 06:48 PM

LoL @ fairy princess girl!

amandamarie 07-10-2003 06:51 PM

Ok, off the hair topic for just a sec. If you have acrylic french tips, can you paint over them, then take it off? Or will that ruin them? Just curious :)

FuzzieAlum 07-10-2003 07:43 PM

That hairstyle is so cute- how do you do it though?

astroAPhi 07-10-2003 07:54 PM

Good luck!

It's not an Alpha Phi thing. Most of our chapters wear black but some wear other colors. I have also seen several DG chapters wear white and DDD at UCLA used to wear peach for pref when I went through (but I don't believe they do anymore).

you may not have the french tips anymore but hte'yre relatively easy to do with a do it yourself kit. if you decide to do that though rmeember that your nails will not be pretty when the acrylic is remove dand that you need to use nonacetone nail polish. you're actually supposed to use acetone to remove acrylic nails

MVP4GPB 07-10-2003 08:11 PM

Yay, I'm so excited to see a thread with Gamma phi in it!! This is my first rush season as an alumni, so I'm sure I'll be in withdrawl by august...

I agree with the hair up idea, just cause I know at my school things get SO hot during parties, particularly at preference if there are lit candles around. My hair curls weirdly in the humidity, so I put it up most days.

*C*

amandamarie 07-10-2003 08:38 PM

OK, I don't know if I made sense about the nails earlier. I have french tips right now. I'm wondering if I can paint over them to have a different color for a day, and then remove the polish, but not the tips. I figured I should ask before I try and ruin something.

Buttonz 07-10-2003 09:16 PM

Just saying good luck with rush :)

WhiteDaisy128 07-10-2003 10:49 PM

I'll spill the secret about the hair style - you print the picture out and go buy flowers and then go to the hairstylest and say that's what you want! Tee hee! I'd have no idea how to do it on my own!

OUlioness01 07-10-2003 10:58 PM

the tips will be gone after you use nail polish remover

roxydiva 07-10-2003 11:47 PM

the nail tips will only dissolve if you use a nail polish remover with acetone in it. if you use non acetone, you can change nail polish colors, but probably would not be a good idea to just leave them bare! :)

GeekyPenguin 07-11-2003 12:44 AM

Your rush outfits sound awesome - and GOOD LUCK!

bsp-mich24 07-11-2003 01:50 AM

Just my two cents...

I do like the "hair up" with a flower or other accent (posted by WhiteDaisy128). Ditto what the others said about: the clothes you selected sound great, ou have 4 great choices (keep your options open).

I will keep my fingers crossed that the waxing & nails turn out okay. Good Luck w/Rush!!! Can't wait to hear your story.:)

GMUBunny 07-11-2003 01:27 PM

That hairstyle in the picture is absolutely gorgeous! I'm looking for styles to wear for my sister's wedding and I think I found it. The theme is tropical flowers and fuschia everything so that'll be perfect!

Ok, back to the topic at hand... if you've used that person to wax your brows before, then there shouldn't be a problem. However, if it's someone new, I agree with everyone else- get them done at least 3 or 4 days in advance and then pluck the day before if necessary.

amandamarie 07-11-2003 01:59 PM

Ok everybody, I'm going to go with the advice and get my eyebrows done a few days earlier. That day doesn't work anyway after all, I forgot I have a concert in KC to go to that day. I'm going out today to look for shoes/hair stuff, I'll let you know what I find!

I sometimes wear the white French tips. The French tips will not show through darker polishes. Sometimes when I am tired of the French manicure, I will paint over my nails with a sheer color of pink or peach. It makes the french manicure look "softer", but still professional and neat.

sugar and spice 07-11-2003 08:52 PM

Yay, a rush thread already! You know we're desperate for them when it's still a month till your rush and the thread has already hit three pages.

Good luck to you! :)

amandamarie 07-11-2003 09:09 PM

Ok, today I went shopping and got some shoes and a really cute scarf. I think I'm going to tie my hair up in it somehow, cause to put it around my neck really wouldn't work to well. Here's a close up of the pattern http://www.echoscarves.com/images/product/385146_sm.jpg
And here's a picture of it. Mine's the black one on the left.
I think it's cute without looking too stuffy. And the colors in it aren't specific to one chapter. Let me know what you think!http://www.echoscarves.com/images/product/385146_lg.jpg

bgsarah 07-11-2003 09:11 PM

are you still going with the black dress? if so, I'd try the black one! :)

amandamarie 07-11-2003 09:36 PM

Yup, still going to wear the black dress. That scarf just jumped out at me, and it was half off! I just tried on my whole outfit, and it looks so cute! I'm so excited! :p
