University of Oklahoma!!
Hi! Can anyone give me any info on what rush is like at OU?? I have gotten a lot of good advice already but nothing to specific to OU. I can't wait for rush but I'm really nervous! Thanks for your help!!!!:) :)
|
All I can say since I'm a guy and its actually going to be my first year at OU as well is, good luck and have a great year. Hopefully some other GCers from OU can help with more specifics for sorority rush.
|
Great God in Heaven look at those houses! Wow! They are all beautiful! I'm sorry I just had to write this! Good luck!
|
OUKate is an Alpha Gam at the University of Oklahoma. She gave me some advice for my cousins who are attending. I know she mentioned that recs were important at OU. So you should probably get as many out as possible & soon. Other than that, relax, keep an open mind, and have a great time. OU is great!
Good Luck! |
Rush at OU is fun. Some of the houses are really hardcore, while otheres are laid back. Its kind of scary at first, but after the first rush party you attend, you will begin to get use to all the loud bouncing, and clapping. All the houses are spread out into North greek adn South greek, make sure you bring a pair of comfortable shoes like tennis shoes or flips flops. After day one you may have a party at the farest south house in South greek and then have to go to the farest north house in north greek. Its not fun running in heels. . I The really big advice I can give you is that during rush you will be hearing all sorts of reputations and rumors about every house. Some good and some bad. Dont let all the girls that you just met sway your decision on what house you want. You may like a small house where you can know all of your sisters, or a big one where you have your clique of friends that all share the ame secrets, whatever it is go into it with an open mind. Let your heart take you where you want to go. If you have an specific questions I will be happy to answer them.. Maybe I will see you during rush. Good Luck!

I am a DG alumn from OU. I agree with everything Kelster said. She described OU rush exactly as I remembered it. I just wanted to say good luck, and I hope you enjoy rushing!

My little brother's girlfriend was a Chi-O at Furman who transferred to OU and affiliated there last semester. I'm an alum of UCO and can't tell you a whole lot about recruitment at OU. I can say that the Greek system up there is huge! The sororities are all excellent organizations. Good luck!
|
Thanks for all the advice and support! It is great to know there are people out there who really care! I am even more excited about going through rush at OU! Still very nervous, I am trying to keep and open mind and let whatever is meant to happen happen. I know that I will meet alot of great people! Please if there is anything else i should know or look out for keep me posted!:)

My sentiments exactly! I am looking at the houses and I am in AWE

ok another question... I have sent all my info to the area ref chairs for recs, I also have other recs for some sororities, if i dont have other recs for the rest ( besides the area ref chairs) will I still be ok? Thank you!!

One of my sisters went to grad school at Oklahoma and advised their Kappa chapter. They're all incredibly hospitable-- when she went down to audition, they invited her to stay at the house for a whole week-- and sweet. She was their NM advisor, and she told me that their NM class is usually around 90 girls. Good luck!
|
One of the women on our alumnae chapter Exec Board graduated from there and I know a couple of years ago she was talking about how they needed another house on campus because of quota being around 90.
|
I met the ZTA recruitment chair at our leadership conference a few weeks ago, she was great!
Good luck in recruitment, I'm sure you would be an asset to any of the chapters! |
OH MY GOD!!! I want to go back to school and go to OU to live in one of those fabulous houses!! Not an ugly or small one in the bunch!! :) You all at OU are soooo lucky!! ;) Good luck during recruitment!
|
Me too Heather, and I would guess the dues are just a tad-bit higher than ours were LOL. :p
I think AOPi's and ZTA's are the coolest looking. My question though as a silly Northerner - do you really get that much snow in Oklahoma? |
Quote:
I wish Texas was just that much more north so we could get some decent snow every once in a while. |
Everyone has great things to say about rush at OU! The houses are great, and I can tell all the girls will be too!
|
If you're going in as a freshman, be aware that you are required to live in University housing for two semesters (or 24 credit hours) if you are under 21 and are not living with your parents in the local area. No such thing as coed housing unless you're an upperclassman and apply early for the few spots on the 11th floor of Walker Tower (though things may have changed since then).
The pressure to 'go Greek' can be intense at OU, and there has always been a distinct 'gap' between Greeks and GDIs, especially during rush. But don't let that discourage you. And yes... you can get some pretty good snows in Oklahoma! (Mind you, it's been 20 years since I was an undergrad there!) |
I will be a freshman and living in the dorms, I can't wait to find out who my roommate will be!
I think I am prepared for what I'm getting myself into with rush, but I still know it could be tough. Ive just gotta keep an open mind! As far as snow, I love snow, well everyonce and awhile! |
Wow! love to live in "houses" like those.;) I liked the style of GPhiB & ZTA the most. Good luck with rush.:D

The best advice I can give anyone for rush at here at OU is to keep well hydrated case you'll be doing a lot of walking, wear comfy shoes so you won't have nasty blisters by the end of the day, and be sure to keep an open mind about everything. All the chapters here at OU are great! Each shines out in their own induvidual way. I don't think there's a single chapter here on campus that I dislike because they all bring something unique to the Greek system here. Also, people loooove to talk rumors in the dorms and I've come to learn, after hearing the rumors and then going to the school for a year, that 99% of the stuff you hear isn't true. Follow your heart and you'll find an excellent home! |
That's right Kate and I are Alpha Gams at OU. She's my Little! I <3 my little.
OU rush is hectic. And remember that rush is taking place in 100 degree heat. And the humidity! I encourage you to keep an open mind, and think about what you want in a house, not what people in your rush group want. No matter which house you join, you'll probably end up with friends in every house. OU has a terrific greek system. My fav. houses are Mine, because it's home, the Zeta house, and the Theta house, but I think the rest are gorgeous too. |
Good luck, hun! :D I don't know anything about Oklahoma, but one of our sisters is from there originally. I would assume the recruitment is just as competitive if not more so than here in the SouthEast. Hopefully you'll get a great roommate too. I've always ended up with random roommates that I had nothing in common with (and some odd roomies too).
|
Rush is getting closer! I can't wait, I'm still real nervous! Everything yall have said has helped me. It's good to know that you feel the way you do about your greek system. It makes me a little more at ease.
As far as the heat, I think I can handle it, I've had my share of heat here in Texas! I'll def have to find some really comfortable shoes! Thanks for the advice and insight! I am counting the days til rush! |
Unless the makeup's changed, Greek Row at OU is divided between North Greek and South Greek. The dividing line is Lindsey Street.
NORTH GREEK HOUSES Kappa Kappa Gamma Delta Gamma Chi Omega Kappa Alpha Theta Alpha Gamma Delta SOUTH GREEK HOUSES Gamma Phi Beta Alpha Chi Omega Zeta Tau Alpha Delta Delta Delta Pi Beta Phi Didn't know they rechartered Phi Mu and AOII... they were inactive when I was an undergrad 20 years ago. |
Quote:
Phi Mu is in the old Alpha Phi house, which just so happens to be the largest fraternity/sorority house (struture square footage wise) in the US. Both are on south greek. Lindsay street separates North Greek from South Greek. North Greek is intersperced with single family homes, while South Greek is almost exclusively greek. |
I just wanted to restate what others have said about rush at OU. It is tons of fun but don't let rumors and others going through persuade you. Almost every girl I know found the right house for them. I have at least one friend in all 13 sororities. Some questions you can always ask your self:
Will I feel comfortable walking around looking my worst in front of these girls? Will I benefit and grow from this sorority and vice versa? What can I do for them and what can they do for me? These are questions that I asked and I found the right house for me. Brittany OU Alpha Gam |
Thanks brilia that sounds like great advice! I will def keep it in mind! I am trying to keep a positive outlook on this, but how likely is it for a girl not to get a bid at all? I'm so afraid that will happen! Thanks!
|
Hey girl!
This is why I love the way recruitment works at OU: you're guarenteed a bid from at least one of the two houses you have on pref night! I don't think you're guarenteed 2 houses on pref night, but in my experience since all the houses want to make quota (it's going to be 76 this year...the number is taken by the total number of girls rushing divided by the number of houses here), and girls drop out after the first few days, so just about everyone gets two houses on pref night! The only thing that would really put you in extreme danger of not getting 2 houses on pref night is if your GPA is really low and doesn't meet the minimum requirements for many houses. I think last year there were only about 5-10 girls total who did not get a bid out of 800 something simply because they went "suicide" and instead of ranking the houses 1 and 2, they completely cut one of the houses on the list and didn't get their first choice. I hope i explained it well for you. If I didn't, they'll drill the system into your head when you meet with the Rho Chi's. But to make a long story short, as long as you don't suicide on preference night, you're guarenteed a bid. |
ZetaMelOU, thanks for explaining things to me! You dont know how much I am benefitting from this help! I can't believe rush is less than a month away!!
|
Hey!
No prob! Yeah, rush is both a fun and emotional time. I've known girls who have had a blast and girls who have called their mothers crying every night. One girl who lived on my floor last year got cut from pretty much all the houses that she wanted after the first day. She was completely heartbroken, but she stuck with it and realized how much she loved the houses who didn't cut her. Turns out, on pref night she was down to the same two houses that her mother had been when she went through rush years ago. That was really special for her and her mom cause she prefed the same as her mom and got the house that her mom was in. Seems like rush turns out well for everyone in the end! You're gonna have a great time wherever you wind up, I know it  . |

Recruitment at OU is nearing (yeah!). Just relax and take it as it comes. You will find the house that is right for you. Good Luck. |
Just wanted to get opinions from you all about the Betas at Oklahoma??!! I know within our National fraternity, they have always been one of our best, winning awards every year, one of the tops on campus, huge, HUGE rush always, intramural winners most of the time, always winning grades...etc.
PS, I know the Betas have a huge house too, but when I look at the map, the Delta Tau Delta house is gigantic, at least double the size of anything.....must be a big house! |
They are really great guys and have a good rep on campus. Always involved and good grades.
|
The Betas were a pretty big house when I was at OU. They always had really wild hall parties, and were known for having a good time. In my opinion, their house is definitely one of the coolest fraternity houses... I think it is some sort of historic landmark or something. A very unique house.
The Delts were big when I was in school. The house is really spread out. They probably had one of the largest memberships at the time. |
The Betas are a really good fraternity here at OU. Some of the guys are quite wild haha, but they have a very respectable reputation here on campus for academia and intermurals and all that stuff.

When are the dates for rush at OU? I'm already getting excited for you guys--it sounds like a really great experience!!! And of course I'm also excited to see a rush thread with Phi Mu. ;)
|
rush starts august 15 and bid day is the 19th!
|
hey everyone! just wanted to give a quick update! I will leave for Oklahoma in about 8 days! Move in is the 14th. Its come sooo quickly! I am making many trips to the mall to be sure of all my outfits, I am also preparing mentally. I have gotten so much support from all around me. I am very nervous for the 15th ( the first day of rush) but so excited to start a whole to chapter in my life!
|
Hey there!
Gotta love the pre-rush butterflies. I'm moving into the house tomorrow and we, along with all the other houses, are gonna be spending next week getting prepared for everything. I'm excited, but in a way a little nervous too because I've never been through rush on the other side and I wanna be sure to make a good impression of my house for all the PNM's coming through. We'll have to share stories from each side after rush is over (in the meantime, I have to abstain from doing so cause it would be considered "dirty rushing", and i don't want to do any of that). Move-in day will be really hectic cause you'll have about 10 girls on your floor at least moving in all at once, but once you get settled it, it'll be really nice having those 10 other girls on your floor cause you guys can all get together and express pre and during rush jitters. LOL, that's what we did! And it was really cool the way things worked out because we had 10 of the 12 houses represented on our floor. I've made sure to stay friends with everyone who lived on my floor cause it always gives me an excuse to go hang out with other houses and stuff. That's one thing that makes OU Greek life great! No matter what house you wind up in, you will still have friends in all of the houses! :) |
