NPHC vs. NPC vs. NIC vs. NALFO

Hey everyone. Now we all know that we have differences, but in this thread let's list all the similarities. This can either be on a national or local/ chapter level (and saying "we're all Greek" doesn't count).

Alpha Phi Alpha, Lambda Upsilon Lambda, and Lambda Pi Chi were all started at Cornell University

Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Sigma Sigma both use the sphinx as a symbol

Ginger 07-02-2003 04:22 PM

Delta Omicron and Alpha Chi Omega both share the lyre as a symbol.

GeekyPenguin 07-02-2003 04:27 PM

Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Gamma Rho, Kappa Sigma, Delta Delta Delta, FarmHouse, Alpha Delta Phi, Lambda Chi Alpha, and more I am forgetting all use the crescent moon as a symbol.

The arrangement of the letters on the Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Sigma Kappa, Zeta Phi Beta, and Phi Beta Sigma badges are very similiar - all have the "phi" raised and in the middle.

FAB*SpiceySpice 07-02-2003 04:38 PM

Phi Mu and ADPi both use the lion as their mascot, ours is named Sir Fidel and *I believe* (but could be very wrong) that their's is named Alphie....?? Or something similar to that I think. :) I also think that SAE's mascot is the lion, but if that's wrong someone please correct me! :D

DG, Phi Mu, and AKA all share the color PINK
I know that a lot of G Phi B's use pink as an adopted color, I know the one's on my campus do. ;)

Cool topic btw!

ZTAMiami 07-02-2003 04:40 PM

Good thread!

Zeta Tau Alpha and Zeta Phi Beta are both referred to as Zetas!:D

Don't forget DZ who also have pink. They share pink and green with AKA.

Tri Delta and Kappa Alpha Theta both have the pansy.

Delta Sigma Theta and Tri Delta (at times) are referred to as "Deltas".

Delta Gamma and Alpha Sigma Tau have the anchor as a symbol.

Chi Omega and KKG have the owl.

GREAT thread idea, but don't forget about the MGLO's!!! The letters in my multicultural sorority (Theta Nu Xi) can be found in two fraternity names: Theta Xi and Theta Nu. One of our nicknames is also Theta Nu, but it's all good because they aren't any frat Theta Nu's on my campus so there's no confusion.

There is also a sorority out there that has lavender as one of their colors (like us), the symbol of the butterfly (like us), and is multicultural. . .I don't remember the name though.
:)

DO uses pink as well. We call it "old rose", but... it's pink :)

My bad. If I left anyone else out don't it's because I don't have love for ya. HarlemWorld has love for everyone, lol.

Are there any other groups that are called Alphas?

Oh yeah, I also wanted to point out that people are always confusing Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Phi. It gets more confusing since "Phi" is pronounced differently between us and people just don't know what to do!:p

Way, way back in the day AOII was referred to as Alpha. I have a song book from 1931 and 25% of the songs just say Alpha.

AOII shares the Jacquesminot Rose with Phi Kappa Psi.
The color Cardinal with with Chi Omega.
Founded at Barnard College like Alpha Epsilon Phi.

Some Alpha Sigma Alpha chapters use Alphas as a nickname, but this isn't national like "Kappas" or "Thetas." They're as likely to be Alpha Sig or ASA.

incidentally....I have a 1950 Clarion yearbook and there was a local fraternity there called Alpha Phi Alpha. I am quite sure they didn't know about Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Sistermadly 07-02-2003 10:40 PM

I'm still hoping for an Ivy event between the AKAs and Alpha Phis (we both use the Ivy Leaf as a symbol) :D

See Tom, this is why I can stand GC! Cuz when the GCer's go out of their way to be so helpful and informing it just gets me more addicted!

It's a good thing I don't have a wireless internet laptop, otherwise I'd never leave this site:p

ThetaPhiAngel 07-03-2003 12:52 AM

Theta Phi Alpha and Tri-Delta share the same colors: silver, blue and gold.

Peaches-n-Cream 07-03-2003 01:09 AM

Delta Phi Epsilon shares a name with a fraternity.

kafromTN 07-03-2003 01:15 AM

Kappa Alpha Order & Kappa Alpha Psi's National Magazines are called The Journal

tunatartare 07-03-2003 02:22 AM

Phi Kappa Sigma also shares colors with Kappa Alpha Theta and Alpha Phi Alpha
Sigma Gamma Rho and Tri Sigma both call themselves Sigmas

sugar and spice 07-03-2003 04:10 AM

Aww, what a fun thread! It gives me an excuse to learn more about the NALFO and NIC groups (I'm already pretty familiar with the NPC groups, and to some extent the NPHC ones).

Many of our similarities have already been mentioned, but there are some new ones in here too:

Tri Delta shares the colors blue, silver and gold with Theta Phi Alpha. Many NIC fraternities use either blue and gold or blue and silver, but none use all three.

We share the nickname "Deltas" with Delta Sigma Theta (although they're called by it more often than we are).

We share the crescent moon symbol with many, many groups (see GeekyPenguin's post), and the stars and crescent in particular with Kappa Sigma.

We share the pansy with Kappa Alpha Theta and Sigma Lambda Upsilon.

We were founded at Boston University, just like Lambda Chi Alpha.

We share the triple letter theme with Sigma Sigma Sigma.

abaici 07-03-2003 04:48 AM

Great thread Frat!

In addition to sharing two beautiful colors- Pink and Green, AKA and DZ share the rose. It's a different type of rose, but a rose nonetheless.

AlphaSigOU 07-03-2003 07:01 AM

Alpha Sigma Phi shares the same nickname as Alpha Sigma Alpha -- "Alpha Sig". In a few chapters where there is no Sigma Chi presence, they're usually referred to as "Sigs".

And FIJI.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia shares the Triangle as a major symbol with quite a few other GLOs: Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Mu Delta, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Mu Phi Epsilon just to name a few.

I'll throw in my Service GLO...

We share our penguin mascot with Theta Phi Alpha and Kappa Delta Chi.

One of our colors, Maroon, we share with Sigma Kappa and Kappa Delta Chi (again!)

I'm sure we share our flower, the White Rose, with a few greeks.

And lastly, our principles of Service and Friendship we share with Alpha Phi Omega, our brother fraternity!

Yup, I did a thread on it:
DPhiE and DPhiE - same letters, entirely different organizations

dardenr , it looks like their name is Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Service Fraternity (I believe they have co-ed membership, though), unless there is TWO of them out there (and therefore, THREE DPhiE's)...LOL, so confusing! :D

I knew this sounded familiar, I had replied to that thread.

There are then three entities. DPE is a Fraternity and Sorority for Foreign Service, not a coed fraternity.

Sigma Alpha Iota shares...

Variations on the colors red and white with Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Theta Chi, and Alpha Chi Rho

Establishment at the University of Michigan with Theta Phi Alpha

Our letters with Sigma Iota Alpha

A musical instrument on our badge with Alpha Chi Omega

Red roses with Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Phi Sigma Sigma, Pi Kappa Phi

astroAPhi 07-03-2003 12:43 PM

Do any other orgs use lily of the valley or forget-me-nots for their flower? That's our flowers, and I thought someone else had forget-me-nots, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone else here have a constellation? I don't see anyone mentioning it, but since I am a space geek, I like that we have a constellation! :)

I think this is so cool! I want to learn what else we have in common others.

The Syracuse Triad is of course made up of Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Gamma Delta. Were any other orgs founded there?

Pi Kappa Alpha and Kappa Sigma -- both founded at the University of Virginia within a year or two of each other -- have the lily of the valley as their flower.

Does anyone else use the chrysanthemum as their flower? We're the only GLO I've ever known of that does.

FAB*SpiceySpice 07-03-2003 02:03 PM

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but Phi Mu and I believe Gamma Phi Beta...? share the pink carnation. Someone correct me if I am wrong. :D
