Being Southern
i know that in being Southern, we get a lotta crap. made fun of for farmer tans, having red-necks, all driving big pick em up trucks, the way we talk, and our bad racist history. but not all things Southern are bad or worthy of being made fun of.
in the South, we do indeed have Southern Belles (where i am from, just as a sidenote, we have Azalea Trail Maids....srs in hs who are picked throughout Mobile, AL to be kind of ambassadors to visitors to the city.....) http://www.juliehardin.com/images/ha...gallery_2b.jpg i had already moved to KY when my sr year rolled around, so i missed out on it. believe it or not, it's a huge deal and a BIG honor....not everyone gets picked and it's cut-throat. in general, Southern gals do have a special charm about them....esp old Southern ladies.....true class and elegance when they're 80 makes them still seem like young women. Southern hospitality....can't find it everywhere, so don't kid yourselves. ;) Southern Gentlemen....oh yes, and these, too, really do exist! a Southern man always holds the door open for all women...no matter how old, young, cute, busted they are. they always show respect, remove their hat in a building/when meeting parents, and just in general are nice guys. they basically know when they are in the presence of a lady, and act accordingly. the South has beaches, mountains, sun and snow......a billion different types of culture.....a strong and proud history to counter our weak and disappointing one (disappointing in that my ancestors could be like that, not that we lost or whatever....for those of you who may like to blow that up) i love being Southern, i am proud to be Southern........so, yay being from the South! |
Well said! I wouldn't trade being southern for anything!
|
Yay for southern belles! Even though my southern woman's history proffesor would barf over the notion of a true southern belle. lol
|
*sniff* I want to move to the south! Why must my soon-to-be-fiance love this crazy cold weather?
|
Yay from another southern lady!
|
Gotta agree! It's great being southern!!! :)
|
Yes but the North has:
Electricity Running water And really really slutty girls. -Rudey --And what guy doesn't hold doors?? |

Haha sweetheart I think anyone would flip out if a girl showed up in a dress like that anywhere! Hah. |
Woo hoo from another Southern Girl!

oh come ON, y'all...those dresses be stylin....LOL... ;)
but for real, it is a major deal down there to be an ATM......have to go through a whole interview process, must have a good GPA, and they only take 50 girls from all the mobile area. have over a 1000, i think, apply for it. my best friend from middle school was "queen" and she was the only one with the pink dress (i hate pink, so there's NO WAY i would've wanted to be queen)...the other colors you can have are blue, green, yellow, purple, and peach (all pastels). needless to say, i was quite the unhappy gal when we moved and i was unable to do it....i had looked forward to being one since i was 9. :( and don't you worry, rudey.....they only wear the dresses at certain events. they are at the airport when important guests come into town, they are "decoration" around bellingrath gardens (this huge, beautiful piece of property down there....grand old house with lots of gardens....amazing), and they also do macy's and disney world parades. basically, they are a representation of the beautiful South.....they are nothing but gracious at ALL times.....i dunno....it's weird. they have this lil curtsey (sp?...bad spelling today....) they do and everything....it's neat-o. :D chicks also have pictures made for the back of their yrbooks in their ATM undies....they have to have the complete get-up....the dress, the hat, the gloves, the parasol, and the pantalettes (sp?). ppl go nuts.....but the dresses cost over $500, so ya know. i guess i'd have my pic in every aspect of that outfit if i paid that much, too. ;) http://www.juliehardin.com/images/ha...gallery_5b.jpg *edited to add: i freakin LMFAO when i saw that whole comment on rudey's sister.....WHOA......funny funny funny! :D |

These dresses are too much!
Not all Northern girls are really, really slutty. |
That is what I love about Southern Ladys, They Can Call you M F and it is honey comin across their lips!!:)
While The Earp Side of The Family fought for the Union, they beleived in the Keeping of the Union! Now on the other side, The Lee Family, Yep, that Lee, and Andrew Johnson, 17 th Pres, from Tenn. after Lincoln, was trying to Preserve the Union of America! Some of the Original Earps Were large Landowners in Maryland! Southern, but before Cival War. What County is just outside of DC! Cant remeber! That where they owned 6000 acrees! Da I am poor!:( |
About the southern gentleman removing his hat thing...
At my Gramma's burial, I was doing just fine until I saw an older gentleman pass the cemetary on his bicycle. He reached up and took his hat off as he passed. I lost it.
So, so sweet. |
My mama's name is Dixie Lee. I would say that I was raised by both my mama and Amy Vanderbilt, but Amy Vanderbilt was a Yankee, bless her heart!
Southern men are raised with wonderful manners, and Southern women are gracious enough to respond with joy and their own sense of tastefulness. It's a lovely situation for all involved! |
Now now
OK but the real tie breaker here is that in the north, we don't use out houses.
-Rudey --:) |
lol@Rudey :p

I'm a GRITS girl and love it!

If you ever want to feel like a southern belle, take a walk across the Texas A&M campus.
I was down in College Station for a football game and as I walked across campus I was in shock. I have never had so many respectful gestures sent my way in my entire life. Every man down there tipped their hat, or removed it completely. They all acknowledged me and called me ma'am. (And I wasn't old back then, I was only 18). By the time you are done with your journey you felt like a true southern belle. That was a few years ago, I hope that hasn't changed. It was what made A&M unique from the other universities here in Texas. And it is something you won't find up north. |

Hey, you stole my sig!:) (J/J) Born, bred and led to be a sweet southern Belle:D |
I love being from the South, New Orleans, and I love living in a very southern town now Oxford, MS. Everyone is so friendly and so warm. I wouldn't move for anything!
On a side note, the North is fun too, just different. |
If Southern men have such great manners, than why do so many of the girls I know from the south say that its hard to get good dates, and that the guys don't do a lot of the classic date stuff we are all famiiar with?

The impression that I get of the South every time I go down to visit is that you get the two ends of the spectrum -- very classy and very trashy. Fortunately here at GC we have mostly the former, and just enough of the latter to make things interesting. :p

but let's focus on the positive! :D and yeah, that skirt will def hide someone from an angry daddy with a shot gun....my dad is not the shot-gun type, but my pa-paw sure is!! which brings me to my next point....not only to we have grandma's and grandpa's, we also have granny's and pa-paw's....poppy's and meemaw's.....ma-mae's, big daddy's, and aunt lejean's...yes, i have all of those (well, no poppy's...but my friend did, as well as a "pie" and "baw-paw")....love it! :) |

I still think one of my favorite quotes about the South came from a Designing Women episode. "Here in the South we're not ashamed of our crazy people, we're proud of 'em! We don't shut 'em up in the attic, we bring 'em downstairs and show 'em off." |
LOL! That is my fave Designing women moment! LOL!
I love Kentucky, but I wish I lived further south. It is a good thing my mama was born and raised in Memphis!!! My aunt and I are really close, she lived in Mobile (in the 18 zip code area I believe!). And we always talk about southern life! I told my boyfriend/fiancee I was supposed to be born a hundred years ago and in Alabama or Georgia, but he just smiles. He is a nice southern boy! His mama doesn't have any silver or own a China pattern, but you had better believe she raised that boy with manners and a work ethic! I haven't seen a man that works harder than him! And women here realize our charm and how to use it, like a weapon. For instance, if I am having a review at work, or if I have something important, I put on the cutest skirts and tops the week before and after (mind you they are not showing any skin that is not appropriate at work!) and the day of I always wear the nices suit that has a skirt with it.... men can't say no to woman around here, and wearing a skirt reminds them that is just what we are.... why my last review I got the highest raise you can be given in your firsy year! And women in the south don't like to hear NO, it isn't something men around here are supposed to say, unless, of course it is to help their daughters... my daddy told me no, and he hated doing it, but it was for my own protection. And southern girls treat their daddys right.... the best advice I was given was the only man you can ever TRULY trust not to hurt you or make you cry is your daddy! God love him, he can do no wrong. Yes, I love the south, it has loads of eccentricity! I mean where else do you find young girls (5 or 6) wanting to do beauty pageants and pick out a silver pattern? And where else do you find the more mature (60 and older) treated so well? |
tom is it Montgomer, Prince Georges, Montgomery, Charles, Anne Arundel???
|
I think I have the bets of both worlds. My mom is from Decatur, AL and my dadis from Monks Corner, SC but they transplanted to DC. I was raised with a lot of southern values and when I go to school in MASS they always laugh when I say mam or sir. I think being raised in DC was awesome. I have had some oppotunities that I think I couldnt have anywhere else.

derpity der der i'm southern. Not really. Virginia is not considered south by anyone except virginians and a few TEXANS. Even in VA people from NOVA (northern virginia) are considered yankees. Which is weird because Lee's army was the ARmy of Northern Virginia. But people from GA, AL and MISS. Say the only southerners are from GA, AL or MISS. If that is your attitude then fine I'm not southern. Have fun in your dresses not being able to fit through normal doorways. The only reason we left the Union was because we thought maryland was going to and didn't want to be surrounded because then we'd be totally screwed. So in the end Maryland didn't and the "southerners" moved captial to Richmond. Thanks a lot guys. And then when Union advanced on Richmond, and Lee and top guys sent to North Carolina for help, NC was like "there aren't enough North Carolinans in that division of Army, ask some one else." Screw you, I don't want to be southerner anyway. I'm a Mid-Atlantician.

And I love grits! They have started serving iced tea in the north, but they serve it in a tiny little glass and then charge you for refills. And forget about getting it sweet. Nothing is better than my southern grandma's sweet tea. Yum! PS. My southern mom used to order tea in restaurants when we would be up north. More often than not she received a long island iced tea. And she didn't drink back then! |
One thing I notice about the South: you all love your churches!
