Drive-In's and Rude People

[rant]

Okay, here's the deal. My boyfriend and I went to the local drive-in last night to watch the movies Daddy Day Care & The Hulk. Well, we were thoughtful enough to when we -had- to move the car an inch or whatnot he put the car in nuetral for no sound to be made, that way no one else would be disturbed. Plus we -only- moved the car during previews or intermission. Also, we laid a blanket (instead of chairs) in front of the car to sit on that way we wouldn't be in front of any small kids that might be behind of us.
Well, apparently the 2 oh so lovely couples beside us decided not to be very courteous. During BOTH movies for about 5 minutes they would turn their car on and KEPT IT RUNNING! Of course they would turn on their cars during anything important in the movie! So guess what, WE (or anyone else parked by them) couldn't hear a sound. And of course one of the cars had a fan belt about to go so the lovely sound of squeeling overtook the night air.

Next time I'm bringing a ball bat to smash in some windows.

[/rant]

I know the drive in here, you can tune into their radio station that has the sounds or use the box u attach to your window. Most people leave there engines running so they can get air or heat depending on the season. I never have problems hearing the movie that way.

SuperSister 06-29-2003 01:37 PM

The drive in around here doesn't even have boxes anymore, you HAVE to use your radio. This means either leave your car running or use the battery.

Yeah, ours, too. Your viewing experience depends also on where you park your car--if you really want to watch the movie, you park up front. However, if you're just there to drink and socialize, then you'd better stay in the back. Still, some people can be rude--especially the ones with the super-loud trucks that try to show off by roaring down the little gravel lanes. Wooo, I'm impressed. :p

They still have drive-in's? Thats such a 70's thing.

I guess in the rural part of the u.s. some things never die.

When was the last time you were in North America?

Drive in's are all over the place even in big cities. People go to them because they like the atmosphere

I've been reading your posts and you don't seem to have anything constructive to say

Lady Pi Phi 06-29-2003 03:57 PM

Canadian is spelled with a C

Thanks.

End of hijack

That is pretty much how our drive in is set-up too. Although I can never leave my car running (mostly for heat during the fall/spring) due my daylights :(.

Yes, but at least they spell them correctly. The majority of people on this board are either American or Canadian. If you don't have anything better to do than insult those nationalities, don't go away mad, just go away.

Rudey 06-29-2003 07:46 PM

I didn't think drive-ins existed anymore either. I wouldn't mind checking one out.

dzandiloo 06-30-2003 12:35 AM

They're building a brand new one in my town w/2 screens & plans for 2 more. I am stoked...I used to LOVE drive-ins. The one we used to go to in Dallas (the Astro) closed about 5 years ago when the concession/projection building was damaged in a fire and the owner realized he was a fool for hanging onto that property when he could sell it & virtually retire. That was a sad day.

On the subject of this thread though--this one is going to have the radio signal....no boxes.

Rio_Kohitsuji 06-30-2003 12:36 PM

Well, this one is extremely old. Good ole boxes are still used.
But hey, it's pretty cheap to go though for 2 movies. $5 per adult and $1 per child.
PS: No hijacking of my threads! ;)

I'm sorry but I would be that pink lady and if you have a problem with the word penis, then maybe you should grow one! :)

We have a drive-ins in Detroit. Well, one that I know of in Dearborn. I've never been to one but I'd love to go. Except the fact that I heard it's totally ghetto and freaky but oh well!

Lady Pi Phi 06-30-2003 01:29 PM

I apoligize for my hijacking...sorry I started it :(

Anyhoo, to stay on topic...

There is a drive in in Toronto at The Docks (an entertainment complex) and it's only open in the summer, but it's a lot of fun and I enjoy it, and they show the new releases too!

But 5 bucks for a movie is great! I went to a regular thatre last night and it was almost 30 bucks for 2 tickets, and then we bought some food. It's far too expensive to go to movie nowadays, so if drive ins are cheaper (and the usually are) then go for it!

But I know what you mean about rude movie patrons. Last night in the theater about 5 different people had their cell phones go off, and 2 guys behind me had a running commentary through the whole movie.

enlightenment06 06-30-2003 01:53 PM

I'd like to go to a drive in myself. I also didn't know they still existed. I've never even seen one. Anyone know if there are any in the northeast?

This web-site might help you find out if there is one near you...

You guys actually go to Drive-Ins to see movies? Damn, what a concept! In the 60's we went there to drink beer and...

Well, that's another thread.

Peaches-n-Cream 07-01-2003 01:14 AM

My friend was conceived in a drive in.

He knows that - the same as certain *other* personas would choose to incorrectly spell words that everyone else in the world can spell (or look at the globe to spell) -- maybe if we all stay real quiet he will GO THE HELL AWAY! Doubt it though - its summer time and ALL the freaking nuts are here to play.

As for drive-ins - we don't have them here anymore, but I miss them - I will have to check and see if my parents still have one near them.

AZpinkkittie 07-01-2003 10:13 AM

We still have one drive-in left in tucson. I haven't been in years but it's nice sometimes. Since you use your car radio now, the sound is better. It's kinda nice being in your car so no one can bug you by talking in the row behind you or having their phone ring. And you can set the temp however you want, so no more freezing in the theater.

I'm sure a lot of us ( or our brothers and sisters) were.:D

DeltAlum 07-01-2003 11:03 AM

Haven't been to a drive-in in years, so the concept of listening to the sound on the car radio is foreign to me.

However, when I was in college there was a drive-in next door to the daytime radio station I worked for. Since we had to sign off at local sunset -- and the movie didn't start until 30-45 minutes later, we used to put the transmitter into what was known as "dummy load" (basically a test antenna that only transmitted a very short distance), and play music for the drive-in until the show started. There was a lot of "back seat music," as we called it to help conceive those little brothers and sisters.

Of course, there are some who would argue that whenever I was on the air we were on "dummy load."

Not in New Jersey anymore, and I never had a chance to check them out. If anyone's been to some in the northeast, which would you recommend. Hate to think I'd drive an extra 100 miles out of the way to try this out and have a bad experience...

That's especially sad, since NJ was the birthplace of the drive-in.

Svierge, it was nice and pleasant without you around. Please go back to wherever you were hiding. Florida, i'm taking a wild guess, because you're sure as hell not from Sweden.

Wow, i'm glad you have so much time on your hands, UFPike. And one would think all those drugs would've fried all your brain cells.

I second that. My best friend from home spent a year in Sweden, and I don't recall her ever telling me about encountering any obnoxious troublemakers over there...

Yea, I think it was like Camden or Newark where the first one was created. In either case, I wouldn't feel too excited about going to one in either cities today :) But still, I'm sure there are some people around here, if you've been to one that was just a really great atomosphere, let me know. Sounds like a really cool original dating idea for today.

As much as I'd love to do that, I don't block anyone so that when an issue is discussed in the mods forum I can know what the hell is going on.

I believe you can still view threads in vbulletin even if you have ignore on. It just shows the username and in the message area it says something like "ignore list, click here to view message." And of course, you can turn it off later if you change your mind.

Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get a PM when something offensive shows up...

ok, back to the original subject....i only know of one drive in in cincinnati, i don't know of any in the southeast portion of ohio where i am most of the time. i went ot it once, but i don't remember much about it except that it was kinda hard to see the screen from where we were parked and we were in line to buy food for a while. i think we only went because the movie we were seeing was rated R and my friends and i were only 16 at the time.
