Songs covered that you thought WTF?

Definately goes to Pippy Dido butchering Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. What's worst is that Jimmy Page went along with it.

sigmagrrl 06-18-2003 10:57 AM

Tori Amos did a cover album last year, Strange Little Girls. I liked most of the songs, but a couple sucked and I LOVE her. I was really disappointed :(. In particular, her cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence". It was just awful! I adore her AND Depeche Mode and she did a horrific job...BAD TORI!

The1calledTKE 06-18-2003 11:00 AM

Madonna's version of American Pie. Yuck!!

SSS1365 06-18-2003 11:12 AM

Landslide.

Smashing Pumpkins version is slightly bearable, but I really dislike the Dixie Chicks version. And I like BOTH Smashing Pumpkins AND Dixie Chicks. I just kinda feel like it's one of those songs nobody should mess with.

texas*princess 06-18-2003 11:22 AM

Save Ferris - "Come On Eileen"

at least i think that was the name of the band

LuaBlanca 06-18-2003 11:27 AM

that techno-dance version of Bryan Adams' "We're in Heaven" (I think that's the name anyway) I DESPISE techno-dance versions of already good songs.
On a similar note: I hate when slow/pretty songs get "funked up" for the dance scene (Coldplay's "Clocks" or Enya's "Only Time")

CC1GC 06-18-2003 11:44 AM

The crosby, stills & nash ripoff 'he got game'.

MoxieGrrl 06-18-2003 11:56 AM

Celine Dion "I Drove All Night"

sigtau305 06-18-2003 12:01 PM

Marilyn Manson doing "Sweet Dreams". Scary:eek:

you forgot to mention Tom Morello of AudioSlave/Rage Against The Machine as well. He was also in on the P.Diddy song.

I feel the exact same way...and what drives me even crazier is people saying "Have you heard that new Dixie Chicks song 'Landslide'?" It's not new people, it's an old song!

I second that.

To see Jimmy Page playing guitar for him....wow, but not a good wow.

Totally in agreement here! If you are going to cover something, make sure it's as good as, or better than, the original.

AchtungBaby80 06-18-2003 12:33 PM

I don't like those covers that Atomic Kitten does...I think one is "Eternal Flame," a song which I never liked in the first place but like even less now that it's been redone.

IHeartAXO 06-18-2003 12:36 PM

Beyonce doing In Da Club.

a) the original hasn't even been OUT long enough for it to be deemed 'cover worthy', you know?
b) she is TERRIBLE.

The radio station here has started mixing 50 Cent's with Beyonce's and it drives me INSANE because Beyonce's is absolutely horrendous.

xok85xo 06-18-2003 12:39 PM

definately in agreement about puff daddy's cover of kashmir

but the award for worst cover ever:

the brady bunch doing american pie.

PiKA2001 06-18-2003 01:29 PM

The absolute worst is Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails "Hurt". It just doesnt sound right.

I dunno about this one. At first I didn't like it but to know that man that is JOHNNY and if you've EVER seen the video...it's actually very moving. I sometimes think videos give us a good idea as to the message behind the song and in this specific case I think it was through his video that you can understand why he's singing the song. But that's just my opinion. Very sad that his wife passed away three weeks ago :(

Yeah, I agree with Hootie here. I actually think it's a very campy, cool cover!

Hootie 06-18-2003 01:45 PM

I'm not quite sure who covered the song first: Whitney Houston or Dolly Pardon, but I don't believe that Dolly's version of "I will always love you" was very good. Then again, I'm not a huge Dolly fan but should she have done the cover...she didn't do it justice

sigmagrrl 06-18-2003 01:46 PM

It was Dolly's song first! Whitney covered it...

greeklawgirl 06-18-2003 01:49 PM

Dolly Parton was the first person to sing "I Will Always Love You." She wrote it in 1974. :)

Hootie 06-18-2003 01:55 PM

Okay well in THAT case the cover was better HA HA HA! ;)

Sistermadly 06-18-2003 02:14 PM

Faith Hill's cover of "A Little Piece of My Heart". Someone needs to grab her by her hair extensions and smack some sense into her.

moe.ron 06-18-2003 02:17 PM

Counting Crows version of the song about parking lot. Boy does it sucked.

In the same vein, I don't like Counting Crows "Big Yellow Taxi". I really feel it's unnecessary to cover a song for a second time (Amy Grant did it in the 90's).

My most hated cover, however, is Aerosmith's "Come Together". It's sacrelige to cover the Beatles, and it's even worse that another "classic rock" band did it.

I swear "Big Yellow Taxi" has been covered at least 3 times... it won't go away!!!

Anything sampled by some rap singer (total oxymoron) is crap. Never heard a good sample. They're just destroying perfectly good songs!

MattUMASSD 06-18-2003 02:41 PM

yeah big yellow taxi needs to go away.

sigmagrrl 06-18-2003 03:06 PM

Faith Hill's cover of "Cry". SHE FUKKED THAT SONG UP! It's by a great artist named Angie Aparo (a guy) and it is so beautiful when HE sings it. It sounds like whining when SHE sings it...LEAVE GREAT SONGS ALONE!

I completely agree; that was a complete butchering of the song!

tinydancer 06-18-2003 03:54 PM

OK, am I just hallucinating or did I hear a "country" cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer"? I have no idea who it was, but it was ok. Just not the original that I love.

Does anyone know? I admit I know zip about country singers.

sugar and spice 06-18-2003 05:19 PM

Madonna's "American Pie" -- she left out half the verses! That song is a story and if you leave half of it you're completely butchering it.

Counting Crows and Vanessa Carlton's "Big Yellow Taxi" is pretty bad.

When Puff Daddy covered/sampled (? -- I'm not sure which term is more correct in this case) "Every Breath You Take." Creepy!

I'm still bitter/pissed/angered about the cover of "Sweet Child O'Mine" by Sheryl Crow. Dag on it, it's a Guns & Roses song....KEEP IT THAT WAY!!!!! She butchered it!!!!

I don't know about that. The Song was pretty well recieved. If you recall on the Grammys, P. Diddy, Faith Evans, the group 112, A Gospel Choir and Sting put on a Good Show doing that song.

It was somewhat well-received. I remember a lot of people complaining about it when it first came out. I think one of the biggest things that people found wrong with it was that he pretty much corrupted the entire meaning of the song.

I think it became much more accepted after the Grammys where Puff Daddy performed with Sting -- like he was giving it the Sting stamp of approval.

At any rate, I still thought it was pretty bad.

Hootie 06-18-2003 09:18 PM

I just heard a punk version of "Boys of Summer". It was um, interesting. Dunno that I like it. I've heard a techno version and that was okay.

The Ataris. How about any one of the songs that Shaggy stole?

Conversely, i like Uncle Kracker's Time after Time cover.

tinydancer 06-18-2003 10:17 PM

Tim McGraw

Thanks, Hootie, for telling me who covered "Tiny Dancer." I didn't think I dreamed it up. Actually, I thought it was a good cover of a great song.

I hated Puff Daddy's "Every Breath You Take."
