BAD DAY AT WORK!!! (stupid tippers)
Okay so I am a server at a resturant. The resturants food isn't that expensive, but still people suck at tipping. Here is how it goes in case you are confussed. 15% is standard. If the person does a really good job, or if there are a lot of you at a table, then a little more is greatly appreciated.
Here is how to figure out 15%. You take the amount of the bill and move the numbers over one place. This is ten percent. Then take this number and divide it in half, and add that to the first number (10%) and you have 15%. For example: Bill= $23.92 10% 2.39 5% 1.20 (I rounded up, you should too) 15%= 3.59. See, its easy. We remember bad tippers, and the next time you come in, you will end up with a spit sandwich. |
I'm sorry OP. :(
I gave great tips when I was in Virginia. In NYC the tax was 8.25% so you double the tax for a tip. In VA Beach the tax is 10% so we tipped 20%. I didn't even realize it. They loved us. :) |

Most tax ranges from 7% to 10% so figure you're always safe doubling the tax....plus areas of higher tax probably also have a higher standard of living, therfore should be given more anyway...
We had a group of 35 yesterday in the diner where I hostess, and they left a $14 tip for all of them... big groups suck because everyone always assumes someone else will leave the tip...plus they monopolize tables and time... |

OP, sorry you got a bad tip. :( |
I feel your pain, my fellow server! I worked as a server for a long time! I tip very well due to that.
My husband worked his way thru university by bartending IMO anyone who screws over a server and thinks their job is so damn easy should be SENTENCED to work as a server for a week! |
I'm sorry you're having a bad day, OP! :(
Hopefully, it'll get better! :) |

Now NYC tax rate is 8.675% I think. It's very confusing with all these new taxes. For big groups of six or more the restaurant should automatically add in a 15% gratuity. They do that in some places in NYC. |
I WISH they had done it at places i worked...but NO they would much rather have a server screwed over than "offending" customers
Cream, where were you in Va Beach? I grew up there! |

Sort of in the vein that some countries have mandatory military service,I am a firm believer that EVERYONE should have to work 6 months to a year of food service, retail or hospitality.I found that the people who were polite when I worked retail were those that had also worked it at some point.Having been there,I am a very good tipper. However,if the service is lousy I will not leave more than 15 % and if it is really bad,I won't leave anything. If my server is attentive but the kitchen is slow, that isn't their fault but if they are too busy talking to someone else or paying attention to the cute guy/girl in the next booth or simply nowhere to be seen and my tea glass is empty, they will suffer. We have all had an experience where the service was just plain crappy. If the service is exceptional,I leave a really good tip and I will tell the manager how wonderfult the experience is.It goes both ways. I am sorry that you are having a bad day.I do hope it gets better. :) |
You have to give me real f*cked up service to get less than 15%...
Usually if that is the case, I get a manager involved. Thankfully that hasn't happened in about 2 years. And my fiance (now husband) and I left him nothing...and even though he treated me shabbily, I almost felt guilty for stiffing him Trust me if i tell you the story, you would see why he deserved to be stiffed |
I was visited Virginia Beach for a week before Labor Day last year with my two sisters. I stayed at the Clarion Resort on Atlantic Ave. We had a balcony right on the beach which was so beautiful. Unfortunately, it rained everyday that we were there, but we still did a lot of sightseeing. We took a boat tour. I really like your hometown. :) I want to visit again when there is no rain.

Three years ago, I went to Washington, DC for a conference. However, we stayed at a hotel in Crystal City, Virginia. We had most of our breakfasts at the hotel's restaurant. We got stuck with a waitress who screwed up the order and had an attitude problem. My dad refused to tip her and we complained about it when we filled out the survey at the end of our stay. Luckily we had our last two breakfasts at a nearby sports bar which was much better than that awful place.

The only time I go below fifteen percent is if I receive rude service and it’s typically no tip. I’ve waited tables and I know the deal I can tell if a servers section is weeded or if it really is the kitchens fault. The only thing that really irritates me is when the server plays the disappearing act. If I only see you to take my order and someone else runs the food for you and then you finally show up when the bill arrives I’m not to happy.

Our sales tax is a little over 8% here, so I always double the tip, and I actually add more because it just doesn't seem like that much. So I probably tip 20% on a regular basis. I don't think that it's all that hard to give up that extra dollar or two to make sure that you tip enough. Seriously folks, unless the service was bad, these people deserve it. Almost no one likes working in the service bis, that's punishment enough without having to deal with lousy tippers.

In ontario it's easy to figure out the tip. Just ad the 2 taxes together...GST and PST and you get 15 %. Anyhoo, my standard tip is always 15%. Sometimes, if my service is really bad I'll tip a little less, and frankly if it's crap, they don't get anything, and I won't go back so I'm not worried about a spit andwhich.
|
I start at 20% and work my way upward or downward, but never go below 15% unless service has been sh*tty.
You're right OP... ya don't need a tip calculator or a little card to figger out a tip. My rule of thumb is round off the bill to the nearest dollar, take 10% off that, double the 10% to get 20% or add half of that for 15%. And then I'll round up the odd cents to the nearest dollar. |
is Indiana a poor state?
because if it is, i'll let this slide...
last night, i start my afternoon shift by seeing a retired couple from virginia pull up to the hotel. I waited about 20 minutes for these ppl to check-in and use the washroom...as i load all his shit on the dolley, he's transferring things to the trunk of the car, stating, "I don't think this valet key opens the trunk" *because i have a lot of use for old man hats* ...so i go up to his room, unload his stuff and he gives me a loonie; one measle canadian dollar, pathetic. Standard for this act of service, whihc we've coined 'fronts', is $5. For most americans, it would be 5 or 10 american dollars (because they're at the to of the tipping hierarchy. The other bellmen comes over "Nick, hopping on the floor and snagging the american fronts, what'd you get for that, 10 american?" Damn i wish we had more bus tours, the last few days this is the only type of clientele we've had. |

Not to start a war, but those of us who work in the hospitality industry work hard to dispel this rumor and fight this behavior. Spitting into food/snot rockets or ANYTHING like this is grounds for immediate dismissal from a kitchen position. It is both HIGHLY unsanitary and grounds for lawsuits up the ass. If you are ever tempted to behave in this manner and you work around food, DON'T DO IT! Would you want this to happen to you??? I could talk about this for hours because my friends are reluctant to ever send food back or complain because they are afraid of this. PLEASE DO NOT PERPETUATE THIS MYTH BY ACTUALLY DOING IT! |
I carry a little tip card in my wallet, but i always try to tip the most i can, everyone needs to make a living :)

One more comment: tips are earned, not automatic. It's a suck-ass profession that you go into if you need a job, yes, but you should also love people. You can't tell me you've never, EVER been on the receiving end of both stellar and/or crap-ass service before you become a server, so emulate the behavior you loved!
The hospitality field is rough. You have to leave all your emotional baggage at the door when you come to work. You have a fight with your SO, can't pay a bill, etc, you leave it at the door. It's an industry that is all about making others happy; it's customer driven and service-oriented. Also, as a customer, you have a small role to play. Basically, don't be an ass! I am VERY cordial to my server b/c I've been in the trenches...If your meal isn't up to snuff, it's not the server's fault. Managers are there to take complaints, don't abuse your server! And if you don't want to tip, stay home! Tip generously if they deserve it. |
