Oprah's On: Town Hall Meeting: Imus Controversy: Now What?
I received the premiere issue of "O" yesterday in the mail and was wondering if anyone else has had a chance to read through it. For those of you who don't know, I love to read magazines and have several subscriptions, and could not resist adding "O" to the list since I'm an Oprah fan. I was pretty impressed with the first issue. I especially liked the interview Oprah did with Dr. Camille Cosby. I think there are more great things to come from Oprah. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I LOVE IT TOO!
$2.95 MAY/JUNE 2000 PREMIERE ISSUE HAS ABOUT 300pgs. SOLD OUT JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE! I WENT TO 5 NEWSTANDS TO BUY IT! |
AkAtude what's so good about her magazine, what is it offering different from others, i imagine its not like Essence its spin or audience would be whom? just wondering before i spend my $2.50 lol. she's bored now she got to do something with all those millions, lol ok i'm done, can you tell i don't particularly care for Oprah anymore. Why? cause she gets on my nerves lol, some things she says make a sista wonder what's going on in her little world. Anyway i know she does some great things, so i ain't mad at her.
Can already hear Oprah fans screaming "don't you say nothing bad about my Oprah" lol. |
I am an oprah fan I visit her web site every, day and I have even started an online journal.I was just wondering what type of things has she said that got on your nerves. I am an oprah fan but I do not idealize he, just intrested in your comments.

Greetings Sorors,
I must admit, I really like the magazine. I found some great articles as well as the motivational cards and bookmarks. The magazine is very classy and a bargain for only $12 for a year subscription. SKEE-WEE! Soror Antwinette |
I like the motivational/inspirational cards as well. The magazine held my attention and that is a big plus in my book. "O" is a magazine that is targeted to women; not just a particular group of women. That is what I like about it. It has something for everyone, regardless of your ethnicity or age. "O" is a magazine that my mom and I can share, unlike some of the others.
I know that not everyone is an Oprah fan. I lot of my relatives say she gets on their nerves, too. However, I find her to be positive and motivational. "O" is Oprah's outlet for when her talk show ends and I think she made a smart move. |
Thanks for the feed back i will check it out, i'm all for helping a sista.

Soror AKAtude is the name of the mag "O"? And I think Soror PositivelyAKA asked what makes it different then other women magazines already out there, anyone care to elaborate?
I saw one post that said it is not just targeted to one audience, to me that meant "BLACK" women, and right now I am into that. I am into being black and getting help with issues surrounding the Black Woman; that is why I love Essence and Ebony (I know these mag's deal with men and women, but right now I need that magazine that is focused on just being BLACK today). I hope yall understand I am not trying to start controversy, you know I got love for this board and for Oprah - I am actually finding the new me with her NEW Monday Special - I just want to know what makes her magazine DIFFERENT? Sisterly |
LadyAKA, I understand what you are saying. I have subscriptions to Essence and Heart and Soul because they are targeted to us. I think "O" is different simply because it gives inspiration and motivation. Oprah has extended her talk show into the written word. So, if you like "change your life" tv, you just might like the magazine as well.
But if you only want a magazine that focuses on Black women, then this may disappoint you. I would suggest a subscription to Heart and Soul. I just got the most recent issue yesterday and it is the best one yet! I bet you'll love it! [This message has been edited by AKAtude (edited June 01, 2000).] |
Thanks for the advice, actually you just reminded me that I did want to subscribe to that magazine, I couldn't think of the name - your the best. Thanks
Maybe I will check out the first edition of Oprah's magazine, and I do like the whole "change your life" thing. thanks again |
I, too read Oprah's new mag...it's funny my caucasian Pharmacist handed it too me at work the other day and was like "Look what I have!" So I leafed through it...I was somewhat disappointed though, b/c it wasn't what I thought, I thought it would be geared more towards black women. Not that it's a bad thing that it isn't, it just wasn't what I was expecting.
But let me tell you something funny, my pharmacist is like really "Valley-girl/As IF" type of woman...so after she showed me the mag...she was like "Oh and I also bought Macy Gray's(sp) new CD" and I am like well...congratulations!!! She was such a sheltered little priss!!!UUUGGGHHH! LIke over the PA system "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" (of course Aretha Franklin) was playing and she was like "Oh I just love Anita Baker...me and a co-worker glanced at her and the other Pharmacist was like.."just grin and let it go!!" But back to the subject at hand...Did anyone hear that Oprah is going to be on the cover of every issue of the magazine?? My sister told me this...TACKY ------------------ 'Cause I'm a woman, Phenomenally Phenomenal Woman That's me Maya Angelou |
Today: Jamie Foxx...he sings! (ETA)
Tomorrow: Kirk Franklin talks about his "addiction". |
missed the Jamie show. :(
But I won't miss Kirk and his addiction! |
Jamie is sooo adorable. I love him.
|
I was up at 1 am and saw the replay of Jamie. I didn't know Tank was one of his boys. That man is still fine. I cant wait to hear Jamie's album. :)

RE: Kirk Franklin on Today
I'm glad someone is finally open enough to talk about this addiction. It's got to be the most common and rampant one in the country yet folks don't want to talk about it. Go figure.

I am watching the Kirk Franklin interview now and have been a fan since his first single but today I love, respect and admire him and Tammy more for showing this to the world.
Oprah, chill back and let Kirk talk. You keep interrupting. GRRRRR |

I'm really surprised the ladies are supporting Kirk. I thought he was a little cocky. I was surprised to learn he was adopted by a 64 year old female when he was 4 years old. I could not help but wonder if he has been molested.
My thing with Oprah, at times she acts like she is so removed from AA culture. She seemed shocked many AA men keep a stash of porn magazines. I'm not sure if folk in my age group still do but I remember before the internet older cousins had what we referred to as "dirty magazines." |

I didn't see Kirk as being cocky or arrogant about it. Maybe I'm biased but I saw him as being real. I applaud him for being able to not only overcome the addiction but to speak out about it. It's one thing to tell your wife, friends and family, but to sing about it and come on Oprah and really speak on it. . . WOW (for me) |
My fathe kept a stash as well. I don't think I've met a person without a male in the family who keeps a stash, even if it's well hidden. I have SO much more respect for Kirk & Tammy (even though I've been a fan forever). Oprah, as usual, irritated me. She wouldn't allow for Kirk to speak half the time without her interrupting him. I was SO proud of Kirk because while he was admitting his flaws, he held steadfast to his faith throughout the entire interview.

And DITTO re: Oprah. |
I'm just blown away. Hear we have a guy who so many Christians look up to and now we find out he is a "ho" as he put it - - - he is just like the rest of us. I'm not trying to be judgmental but he said he felt convicted by his sins and knew he was doing wrong from the time he began sleeping with girls at 9 and watching porn. Yet, he stood and preached the wages of sin until five years ago. I see him in a new light.
Also, "O" did not ask how he was able to overcome his addiction or did I miss the reply. |

he's a freak just like me and all the rest - lol. i'm just don't think i now see him as some religious leader or spiritual advisor like . . . ms. adams or shirley ceasar. i see him as an entertainer and he says jump i won't be thinking jump for jesus but get your hand up and lets set it off.
|
I can't honestly say that I can take away any anointing that Kirk has. It is his trials and testimonies that, to me, make him a greater minister. I don't want someone telling me that God can and will deliver you when they haven't been through anything. I can't hold Kirk's past against him because God doesn't hold mine against me. (And if he did? Whew...)

I am sure a whoooooooooole bunch of people, men and women, watched Oprah last night and gained courage to come to grips with an addiction, be it pornography or otherwise. I hold Kirk in the same light that I do Rev. Vashti McKenzie, Pastor Murphy, and Pastor Troy -- all pastors, 2 whose churches I currently belong to or formerly belonged to. I was not devastated to hear about Kirk's addiction because I believe the Bible to be true when it says, "We ALL fall short of the glory of God." That verse does not say all the people who are not in ministry or sit in a pulpit or sing in the choir, lead praise and worship, etc. etc. My mother last year set me up with a Pastor. Not an associate minister or minister of music or deacon or what not, but a PASTOR. Do you know one night we were talking and this man of God OPENLY TOLD ME that he fornicates. I almost dropped my phone. He told me, "once we touch lips, soon we will touch hips."    I was turned off and offended outright. So as you can see, I continue to hold Kirk Franklin in a good light. He knows what he did was wrong, but he never saw himself as totally above it -- his addiction or his hoeing. He conquered it through a lot of prayer, his wife's support, etc. I can listen to his music now with an even greater respect and appreciation. |

I'm certainly with you on God's unmerited favor. However, Kirk has been going through this for 20 years or more. He is a man I have listened to for inspiration. His songs or praise gave me hope, joy, understanding. Now, I learn he is a sex freak. To me, I may as well consider buying a gospel cd from dirty kim - sorry, little kim.

What if you found out today that Shirley Caesar also suffered with an addiction to pornography? He suffered with it because he went to his pastor who dismissed his addiction! He was never taught how to live as a Christian man. He said the men around IN THE CHURCH did it too as well as cheated on their wives. He was surrounded by hypocrites but he still wanted to live right and seek God's will. I guess I am just seeing this differently than you. |

he went to his pastor at 14 or 15. the man is now in his 30's.

clearly, you know more than i do about these matters. i was not aware donnie was gay at some point. i thought he said he was tempted but never acted. daryl coley - wow - this is news to me - tude you are susposed to keep me in the loop.
anyway, yea, i would see them the same way QUOTE]Originally posted by UrbanizdSkillz Being the daughter of a Minister and Gospel Artist, you'd be amazed the number of pastors you may have sat under and artists you've listened to that lead these double lives and have no conviction whatsoever about what their doing. I understand your feelings, though. Just know that Kirk is REALLY not alone. And to mention it, do you hold these same feelings about Donnie McClurkin who openly admitted to living a homosexual lifestyle prior to becoming a Gospel Superstar? What about Daryl Coley? These are both Gospel artists singing about the love of Jesus who have been delivered from their past sins. [/QUOTE] |
