What's your favorite non-profit org. and why?
I'd have to say two: The American Red Cross and the United Negro College Fund.
The ARC because they provide immediate relief for those in need around the globe. The United Negro College Fund because it awards scholarships to deserving young people who otherwise might not have made it to college. And they support our HBCUs. |
Good question....
Well after Zeta ;)... I had an internship with United Way (Chicago) and I must say that I admire the work that they do. Not only do they fund hundreds of organizations throughout the city they also have a hands-on approach to communities. I think its so easy for major non-profits to just hand out money and not even think twice of actually going to the location and working with the community. |
Does anyone know who does the Christmas in April? Is it United Way?

Christmas in April
I believe it's sponsored by a lot of different organizations/corporations.

My favorite org. is Planned Parenthood. I really think they are changing the dynamics of college campuses by providing free birth control to the students, which in turn decreases the amount of students who drop out due to unplanned pregnancy.

I really like the American Red Cross also. I've always liked donating blood because there's always a need. The ARC has also been helpful in Atlanta and throughout the SE since all of the insane rains that we've had. Whatever was a disaster area was helped tremendously by the ARC.

My favorite would have to be the American Diabetes Association. I feel a special closeness to them because so many of my relatives are affected by the disease. Hopefully there will be a cure!
|
Nationally, the American Cancer Society
|
The American Cancer Society and the National Red Cross!

The ACLU for the work it does in protecting the civil liberties of everyone. :D
|
The Police Athletic League (PAL) does some great work with children.
|
Good question. Nationally, I'd probaby say the Salvation Army.
Locally, The Lord's Diner, which serves free meals to the homeless/low income population of our city 365 days a year. :) |
Make A Wish Foundaton and the American Cancer Society at the national level--
At the collegiate level--Mortar Board Inc. whose permanent service project is Reading is Leading to encourage reading and literacy at all ages Locally--Birmingham Hospitality Network--this is a great organization that helps provide shelter and food for homeless families who could be split up otherwise ( some shelters will now allow sons to stay with their mothers if they are over the age of 10-12)..neat thing about this is that about 20 churches rotate serving the families...the families rotate from one church to the next on a weekly basis. the churches provide meals, company, and security by staying with them at night. |

As far as non-profits go, I really like the agency I work for. I know I am bias but they run some really great programs that are extremely needed in the community. You can check us out at www.tsiny.org. I work for the ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) Program. I've also worked in several of the agency's residential programs and have learned TONS!
I know I gripe a lot about my profession, but overall, my agency is one of the better ones IMHO, extremely supportive, and a pleasure to work for! P.S. We are hiring another Social Worker in my program if anyone is interested or knows someone who may be interested;) |
After my sorority, I'm gonna go with United Negro College Fund and Children's Miracle Network.
|
St. Jude Children's hospital... i love kids
|
The National Urban League... economic empowerment is a movement dear to my heart.
Also the American Diabetes Association and the Multiple Sclerosis Society (the diseases that have heavily affected mine and hubby's families). |
One I used to work for, Womens Initiative for Self Employment (local to the bay area) and a few others, UNCF, UNICEF,
|
The two in my profile (American Heart Association and Susan B. Komen, both for personal reasons), as well as Make a Wish are three of my favorites.
|
United Negro College Fund. It's a great organization.
Also, the National Urban League. |

Greetings to all the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho and everyone-
I'm new to the Sigma Gamma Rho boards:) and decided to jump on in-- My favorite non-profit org is the Warrick Dunn Foundation. This young NFL player gives away a new home every Christmas to a single-mom to allow her the chance to own her first home although she may not have the finances to gather the down payment money. He has partnered with many companies to not only get the house, but he fills it with all new products and furniture and has it professionally decorated. He works with the mom and a financing company to esnure she can keep up with the payments also. When I saw him on tv this month give a young mom with kids a new future-it blew me away. He was raised by a single mom and was one of six kids I believe. She was killed in the line of duty and his success has allowed him to give back to as many single moms as possible in her honor! |
Here's one local non-profit org. that doesn't get enough recognition : The United Black Fund (sp)of Cleveland. they had done some great things.
