"Popular" letters

Ever notice that some Greek letters just never, or rarely get used? Like, what's wrong with Omicron, Psi, Upsilon, etc? Meanwhile there's a billion Alphas, Deltas, Phis, and Kappas. On my campus every organization but two has an Alpha or a Phi in it for goodness sake... and mine has both! Do you have letters on your campus that everyone has?

Anyone know why these letters stand out? If anything, I just think it's kinda funny.

krystle 06-13-2003 11:38 AM

i think...5 out of the 8 that we have..have phi in them.

phi sigma sigma
gamma phi beta
theta phi alpha
phi pi delta
kappa delta phi

CutiePie2000 06-13-2003 11:38 AM

We must have a psychic bond, because I was thinking this yesterday!

Alpha and Delta seem to get used a lot, but Omicron, Xi and even Psi, Eta, Iota not so much.

Omicron: I can only think of AOII.
Xi: I think only AXiD and Theta Xi use it.
Mu: I can only think of Phi Mu and Sigma Alpha Mu, but surely there must be others (I am just too lazy to go and look).
------------------------
At my campus, we seemed to like Alpha, Delta and Gamma and Phi!

Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Delta
Pi
Alpha Phi
Delta Phi Epsilon
Delta Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
------------------------
Also:
How many "Tri-somethings" are there?
There's Tri Delta and Tri Sigma (NPC)
There's Tri Alpha and Tri Zeta (I think they're locals).
There's Tri Kappa (I think it's educational or honor or something) and there's Tri Beta (also something along those lines).

Any others?

AOII_Luv 06-13-2003 11:40 AM

I noticed that too. And, I have noticed that I have seen like only one organization with Iota or Eta in the names. What about chapter letters? Are Upsilon, Omicron, Iota, Eta, and Psi just as uncommon? At IU, there is an Alpha Omicron chapter, either it is DU or Lambda Chi, but that was the first time I have seen Omicron other than in my organizations name.

texas*princess 06-13-2003 11:50 AM

Interesting topic!

I can't think of a lot of GLO's with Nu in them either. The only ones I can think of without hurting my brain is Sigma Nu & Theta Nu Xi.

DeltaSigStan 06-13-2003 11:52 AM

At SDSU, if we're just talking about IFC and Panhellenic, then we don't have any orgs with Eta, Iota, Lambda (LXA comes back next Spring though), Xi, Omicron or Rho. The cultural GLOs have one with Lambda though.

I think Eta is the most misused letter. There are no IFC, PHC or NHPC GLOs that use it. I only know of Eta Sigma Phi, Eta Kappa Nu and Alpha Eta RHo, which are not social GLOs.

WhiteDaisy128 06-13-2003 12:00 PM

Alpha Delta Pi
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Chi Omega
Sigma Kappa
Zeta Tau Alpha

That is my campus. Delta is most popular and Alpha after that...but I think we are pretty mixed.

AGDPrincess70 06-13-2003 12:06 PM

We seem to have a lot of GLO's with sigma or delta in them at my school:

Alpha Gamma DELTA
Alpha Xi DELTA
DELTA Zeta
Alpha SIGMA Tau
SIGMA SIGMA SIGMA
SIGMA Kappa
SIGMA Nu Phi (local)
Phi SIGMA SIGMA
SIGMA DELTA Tau

SIGMA Phi Epsilon
SIGMA Nu
Phi SIGMA Kappa
Phi SIGMA Phi
DELTASIGMA Phi
SIGMA Tau Gamma
DELTA Tau DELTA

then there's the rest of them :p
Lambda Chi Alpha
Kappa Phi Alpha (local)
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Arm of Honor (local)

Wellll, there is Phi Mu Alpha! ;) (Of course, we worked in the ever-popular Phi and Alpha, too.)

There's also Phi Mu Delta.

Hail Sinfonia!

AlphaFrog 06-13-2003 12:13 PM

We have LOTS of Sigmas

Sigma Sigma Sigma
Sigma Kappa
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Phi Sigma Sigma
Sigma Chi
Sigma Pi
Sigma Tau Gamma
Delta Sigma Phi
Alpha Sigma Tau
Sigma Lambda Sigma

Ginger 06-13-2003 12:15 PM

I think Alpha was the most popular on my college campus... followed by Delta.. Phi is up there pretty high for us too.

we had:
Alpha Sigma (local)
Delta Zeta
Sigma Sigma Sigma
Tau Phi Lambda
Delta Omicron ---there's an Omicron for you!
Phi Mu Alpha
Pi Kappa Alpha
Phi Chi Epsilon
Delta Chi
Phi Sigma Kappa
Lambda Chi Alpha
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Alpha Phi Alpha
Delta Sigma Theta
Zeta Phi Beta

My bad. Just call me a blockhead. http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/square/eh.gif

Does it say anything for my defense that it's Friday and I have over expended my weekly allotment of brain cells?

It's ok, you're forgiven, you're just lucky I happen to like Sinfonians!

So they're sort of the equivalent of R S T L N E (yay Wheel of Fortune)? Interesting... I didn't know that.

The new local on our campus is Delta Psi Sigma... I think they purposely picked letters that no one else has. :p

On our campus we have:
Alpha Phi
Gamma Phi Beta (by the way... the only other Beta I can think of is Beta Theta Pi)
Delta Psi Sigma
Lambda Chi Alpha
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Chi Phi
Pi Lambda Phi
Theta Xi
Pi Kappa Alpha

Theta Xi, TKE, and Delta Psi Sigma definitely have the most "original" sounding names on our campus. :p

Peaches-n-Cream 06-13-2003 12:49 PM

When I was in school, there were lots of Alphas, Phis, Sigmas, and Taus.

Sororities:
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Delta Phi Epsilon
Delta Tau (local)
Phi Sigma Sigma
Sigma Delta Tau

Fraternities:
* Alpha Epsilon Pi
* Alpha Sigma Phi
* Beta Theta Pi
* Chi Phi
* Delta Omega Phi (local-closed)
* Pi Lambda Phi
* Sigma Alpha Epsilon
* Sigma Alpha Mu
* Sigma Phi Epsilon
* Sigma Nu
* Tau Alpha Upsilon (local)
* Tau Epsilon Phi
* Tau Kappa Epsilon
* Zeta Beta Tau

It is interesting. Many of these fraternities have closed and new ones have opened. Only one sorority (the local) has closed over the years.

AchtungBaby80 06-13-2003 01:07 PM

Believe it or not, I was just thinking about this same thing recently! Delta and Alpha seem to be very popular where I went to school.

As for rarely-used letters, I'm in an honor society called Phi Upsilon Omicron...try saying that three times fast!:p

Peaches-n-Cream 06-13-2003 01:12 PM

You seem to have a lot of Sigmas at Indiana U. Actually, you have a lot of everything there since greeklife is so huge. :)

Jill1228 06-13-2003 01:20 PM

I guess because Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, it will have the most usage :)

How about Pi Beta Phi?

As for seldom used Iota, the only national orgs I know of are Sigma Alpha Iota and Iota Phi Theta. I can't think of any that use Eta, though.

nyrdrms 06-13-2003 03:24 PM

Phi is the most common letter at CNU

Alpha Phi
Alpha Phi Omega
Gamma Phi Beta
Pi Kappa Phi
Pi Lambda Phi
Sigma Phi Epsilon
Phi Mu

and then we have
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Delta Sigma Theta

we used to have
Zeta Phi Beta
Sigma Pi
Sigma Tau Gamma
Phi Beta Sigma

PrincessHeather 06-13-2003 04:40 PM

We have a lot of Phi usage at my school. (we have 11 GLO @CSU Stanislaus)

Sororities:
Phi Sigma Sigma
Phi Lambda Rho-local
Delta Phi Gamma-local
Phi Gamma Theta-local

Fraternities:
Phi Mu Alpha
Phi Delta Theta

Also what is interesting at my school is the more uncommon letters are more commonly used with our locals.

letters used by our locals:

Upsilon Kappa Delta
Nu Alpha Kappa
Phi Lambda Rho

also we have Alpha Xi Delta which is uncommon too.

Another thing that is common on our campus is all of our GLO have 3 letters except for one. (Theta Chi) I've always thought that was kinda neat.

*Edited because I can't spell Upsilon

Just thought I'd point that out!

It totally is! And no one has answered my other question which was..............

How many "Tri-somethings" are there?
There's Tri Delta and Tri Sigma (NPC)
There's Tri Alpha and Tri Zeta (I think they're locals - I saw their website somewhere).
There's Tri Kappa (I think it's educational or honor or something) and there's Tri Beta (also something along those lines).
Any others?

moe.ron 06-13-2003 05:53 PM

a lot of bored people out there ;)

I recall coming across a Tri-Gamma, probably a local but I think they folded.

sugar and spice 06-13-2003 06:11 PM

I've actually noticed this too . . I think it's mostly because a lot of GLO names stand for something in Greek, and really, can there be that many words that start with Xi or Eta or Upsilon?

I also think that Alpha is used a lot because of its significance of being the first in the alphabet. :)

There are a ton of NPC organizations (over a third of the NPC, I think) that have Alpha as their first letter.

PhiMuJulia 06-13-2003 06:16 PM

PHI mu
alpha PHI
delta PHI epsilon
PHI sigma sigma

PHI kappa sigma
sigma PHI epsilon
pi kappa PHI
PHI beta sigma

Rio_Kohitsuji 06-13-2003 06:17 PM

We have alot of "Alpha's"

Alpha Chi Nu aka. Archon (local fraternity)
Alpha Mu Beta (local sorority)
Alpha Sigma Phi (well duh)
Chi Omega Alpha (local sorority)

When 2 of the local sororities were local we had the Sigma's running rampant. :)

Alpha Sigma Tau
Phi Sigma Sigma
Alpha Sigma Phi

Oh, we have a local using all the letters that you al say aren't used very much :) Lambda Omicron Psi

LeslieAGD 06-13-2003 07:09 PM

Alpha, Sigma, and Delta are the most used letter on my campus.

Regardless of where they are Tri-Kappa may not be the best letters to have...I mean what would the letters look like all together people!:rolleyes:

At my alma mater, Stony Brook, there are organizations with Alphas, Sigmas, Deltas, Phis, Gammas, a few of the following: Epsilons, Thetas, Taus, Betas, Chis, Psis, Zetas, Rhos, Iotas, Upsilons and only one Omega, Mu and Nu.

Valpo's Greek Letters:

Alpha Delta Pi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi

Theta Chi
Lambda Chi Alpha
Sigma Phi Epsilon
Sigma Chi
Phi Kappa Psi
Phi Delta Theta
Phi Mu Alpha
Phi Sigma Kappa
Sigma Pi
Sigma Tau Gamma

Sigma Alpha Iota
Alpha Phi Omega
Delta Sigma Pi

Okay, so most of our have Phi, Sigma, Alpha, and Delta as the top 3...chapter names cover the lesser known Greek letters (Zeta, Eta, Xi, and Upsilon) and the letters left out of our system are Nu, Omicron, and Rho
