How many of you have competed in a pageant?

Lately there have been a couple of pageant related threads and it got me wondering...How many of GCers have competed in a pageant? If you have, what pageants where they and how long have you been doing them? Where they southern pageants or more Miss America style pageants!

RedRoseSAI 06-06-2003 03:21 PM

I competed in Miss America locals for two seasons. Due to scheduling conflicts and such, it only worked out to be three pageants total. I never won, but it was a lot of fun!

AchtungBaby80 06-06-2003 07:18 PM

I did our local Junior Miss when I was in high school...does that count? I was a favorite among the coaches, but I didn't win jack squat. Why? Who knows. Everyone was surprised, but I thought I sucked anyway. :p Actually, I think it was because there's some kind of rule that says you have to compete in the pageant your home county holds, and I didn't--I competed in the next county because that's where I went to school. Oh, well...it was fun anyway! :)

jess_pom 06-06-2003 09:22 PM

I was crowned York County Dairy Princess 1998 in the Dairy Princess Pageant! I then went on to compete in the state pageant. Didn't win, but had fun!

cntryZTA5 06-06-2003 10:37 PM

I competed in the Miss Big Bear pageant when I was a senior in high school. I won Miss Congeniality :) . I did it so that I could get over my fear of speaking in front of people.....it worked!

PM_Mama00 06-06-2003 11:05 PM

My best friend's family hosts the Miss Cheerleading of America pageants all over the country. They're a "scholarship" program (I think) for, duh, high school cheerleaders.

KillarneyRose 06-07-2003 12:51 AM

I will admit here and now that I was first runner up in the 1984 Dorseyville Corn Carnival Princess pageant.

And now I will never mention it again! :)

Hootie 06-07-2003 01:29 AM

CORN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p

LOL sorry, gotta cheer for a Corn Carnival Runner Up!:D

chopper816 06-07-2003 02:21 AM

i was in the mr millard west pageant in high school, and last year i was in the zta big man on campus pageant, i lost, but its all good!

When I was 15 months old, I was named Hawaii's Healthiest Baby 1980. Does that count?

I've been approached by friends and their pageant coaches to do the local MAO prelims, but I won't be caught dead in a bathing suit on stage. I refuse to wear a two piece anywhere but the beach. Aside from that, there's just too much money and time involved...and I don't think I could've done that. I'm too old to compete now anyway. Oh well.

DeltAlum 06-07-2003 12:41 PM

I never realized how much time and effort go into the Miss America preliminary pageants until post college. I dated a girl as a Freshman (Alpha Gam) and her (biological and sorority) sister was Miss Southern Ohio at the time, but I barely knew her -- just that she was a bartender and served us liquor underage.

When I was a TV director in Columbus just after O.U. I hired a former Miss Ohio and First runner up Miss America to do some shows for me at the Ohio State Fair one year. She and her husband and Mrs. DeltAlum and I became friends socially for a while. She is the one who told me how much work and how many pageants you had to go through to make it to "the top." As an aside, she showed me a trophy she got when named Miss Ohio. She had it made into a lamp! It was great!

Finally, I knew Miss America (1971 I think), a Fuzzie from OU who later married (and divorced) one of the anchormen at the station I worked for. I gave her rides back to Athens from Columbus on Monday mornings sometimes when I was heading down to see the future Mrs. DeltAlum. Last I heard, she was a designer for pageant swimwear and a talent coach for pageant contestants.

By the way, Mrs. DeltAlum was Prom Queen in high school, nominated for Military Ball Queen in college -- and perhaps most prestegious of all -- Toledo Area Student Council Queen! How do you top that?

edit

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that our son won the Mr. (High school name) both Junior and Senior year. It was a fundraiser where they wore provided tuxedos (it was just before prom) and had a talent competition -- he's a singer. He didn't think it was a big deal, but I think he had fun anyway.

ladybug1116 06-07-2003 12:44 PM

I also did my local Junior Miss pageant and my Miss _____ High School Pageant when I was a senior. Won talent and interview in Junior Miss and was 1st runner up overall in the HS one...lol. It was really fun though and if the opportunity ever presented itself to do that type of thing again I would do it in a heartbeat :)

kstar 06-07-2003 02:51 PM

I did pageants until I was 13... I won a few, placed in a bunch. It all started when I was 2 months old and won a beautiful baby contest.

Fav. pageant memory: Little Miss Southwest. I was 8 and I won, and the trophy was bigger than me.

Peaches-n-Cream 06-08-2003 01:17 PM

I was in one pageant in high school when I was 16. I was a semi-finalist, but the title went to someone else. There was no bathing suit competition. I considered doing the local Junior Miss, but I didn't. I forget why. Maybe they had a bathing suit competition.

PM_Mama00 06-08-2003 01:19 PM

You guys should post your formalwear pics! I love looking at pageant dresses. One of my sisters wore hers to our formal this year and it was gorgeous!

I wound up wearing mine to my prom. It was a Gunne Sax. :)

ladybug1116 06-08-2003 02:34 PM

No bathing suit section in Junior Miss. However there is a fitness portion where you are basically wearing a bathing suit (leotard) and doing a cheesy fitness/dance routine.

JohnsDGsweethrt 06-08-2003 05:02 PM

I was in my high school pageant all 4 years and in Miss Octoberfest once. I got finalist twice in the h.s. pageant. I did a ton of pageants with my baton twirling only you call it modeling. And you just compete in your evening wear with other girls your age. Its not even on a stage but several competitions are going on at once. Just the t-shaped modeling

winnieb 06-08-2003 05:23 PM

i couldn't resist...

My dog, Peaches, is in our town's Dog Show (pageant) every summer. She is a 5 time (consecutive) winner of the highly esteemed
Ugliest Dog award. We are very proud of her!!!:)
The really sad thing is--alot of people in town know my husband and I as "Peaches Mom and Dad"

-wendi and as for me, no pageants.

UDZETA 06-09-2003 11:41 AM

It is amazing to see how many people out here have done a pageant. You would think I would have out grown them but no I love doing the beauty pageants and pro-aming on stage! I love the Miss America system also but sometimes it is fun to get a glitzed up and do a nice beauty pageant. Good luck to all those who may have a pageant coming up! :D

LXAAlum 06-09-2003 12:42 PM

My wife is a former Miss Deaf Colorado and Miss Deaf America contestant.

So, as hard as it is for any of you to believe...LXAAlum is married to a beauty queen! :p

What exactly is pro-am? Is it just basically a modeling competition?

I think pro-am is modeling to music. It's like a cross between modelling and dance, cuz each move/pose sort of flows into the next (I saw a documentary on TV about pageants and that's how I learned that term!)

Optimist Prime 06-09-2003 04:10 PM

I competed in Mr. Hermitage for HS seinor yer

AlphaGamDiva 06-09-2003 06:26 PM

dixiesong3131 06-09-2003 07:33 PM

I live in a small suburb of Cleveland that has the Miss Seven Hills competition each year at Home Days. My best friend's sister was looking for girls to be in the pagent b/c no one had signed up to do it. I felt bad, so i agreed to do it. Well, the day of there were 8 other girls who really wanted to be Miss Seven Hills. I ended up doing it, made a fool of myself, but had a good time. But alas, no crown for me :p

I am getting geared up for the Miss Ohio USA pageant. I am getting excited but I am worried there is a lot of hard competition! I am ready for it.

maybe it was 'cutest baby'? i think 'sexiest baby' sounds kinda creepy

SigKapSmurf 10-29-2003 09:14 PM

Last year I was in my town's local pagent. It was so much fun, no crown, but made a ton of friends and had a blast doing it.

Pageants

Much like JohnsDGsweethrt, I twirled and entered a blue bazillion pageants with twirling. I was Miss Western Frontier 1982. Good grief!

I've never ran in a MAO prelim but I have good friends that run 3 prelim pageants to Miss Hawaii.

Turn for the Judges is a decent pageant resource that lists names for current titleholders for every pageant out there. In addition to that, they also provide links at the bottom of the page so you can contact the local pageant people. Not all prelim pageants have links to websites, but you can use the few out there to point you in that direction. If those don't help, then I'm sure you can find a contact person at http://www.missil.org Good luck!

CutiePie2000 02-10-2004 12:15 AM

Thanks for those links, OTW.
I also wanted to point you all to a pageant column that my dear friend Jimmy does.
http://missworld.pageantgossip.com/2...earpoodles.htm
It's called "Dear Poodles" and he is a darling! :D

DeltaBetaAGD 02-10-2004 12:29 AM

I competed in local pageants in Southern California. My biggest honor was Miss Photogenic. :D

Sister Havana 02-10-2004 01:00 AM

I competed in the 1991 Bolingbrook/DuPage Township Junior Miss program. (It was called Young Woman of the Year at the time, they changed it back to Junior Miss a few years later.) It was an absolute blast! I won a runner-up award for talent. It was funny, I completely was not expecting to win anything so when they called my name as the winner, I just stood there. They called it a couple more times until the girl next to me elbowed me and said "Hey, that's YOU!" :D

ISUKappa 02-10-2004 01:12 AM

I was the 1997 Franklin County Fair Queen. My biggest responsibility was to draw the winning ticket number every night at the grandstand shows and take photos with the winning livestock and their handlers.

Alas, I didn't do so well at the State Fair Queen competition, but I had fun! :p

DGMarie 02-10-2004 02:16 AM

I am the Miss Bojangles Laser Light Show 1986. Not a formal pageant, mind you, but I beat out the other 15 or so girls on the band bus to state marching championship that year, so it was special to ME.
