Meeting ADPi's in Random Places

Have you ever met an ADPi in a random place? Where did you meet her (or them)?

For example: Today I met an ADPi at the gym I work out at. I was wearing my formal recruitment shirt and the woman read the back of my shirt and asked if I was a member of one of the sororities listed. I said that I was an ADPi and she said that she was one as well. I never expected to meet a fellow ADPi in the small town I live in!

SLUadpi 06-05-2003 03:37 PM

I remember coming home one time and finding out that my brother's girlfriend was also an ADPi, i was so excited. But it ended up being a sad thing though, I guess the chapter she was in didn't have many friendly sisters and she ended up transferring schools because of them, so now she doesn't want anything to do with greek life. :(

nauadpi 06-05-2003 08:07 PM

I am always amused when i run the adpi booth at freshman orientation...I was running it yesterday for one...and this woman passed the booth with her husband and son...she started to try and stop...and they just kept going...so she just commented that that was her sorority...and they still just kept walking...I always seem to meet adpi parents at them who are there with their sons...never seems to be daughters.

honeychile 06-05-2003 09:54 PM

This didn't happen to me, but I always liked the story:

Two of our alumnae (when I was in school) lived next door to each other for a couple years, when one went outside to rake the leaves in an ADPi sweatshirt. The other, stunned, ran outside to tell her that she was an ADPi, too, and they got all excited!

2 years ago I found out that my high school cheer coach is an Adpi. I never knew it at the time, but I found her on Pride On line...It was fun to chat with her again.

ASUADPi 06-06-2003 02:58 AM

I found out the my old high school principal, well is an adpi. I was working in the mall and they came into my store. My prinicpal and his wife were very supportive of choir (which I was in) so he was aware of who I was and knew me. Well they asking me about college and life in general. I then mentioned that I joined a sorority, his wife asked which one and I was like I'm an Alpha Delta Pi and she got so excited. She like hugged me and started singing some cheesy rush song. It was kind of embarrassing but awesome at the same time because I never expected my principals wife to be a sister.

I actually work with a sister now. I found out she was a sister by wearing a rush shirt to one of our meetings. She then asked if I was one, I was like yeah and she told me she was initiated at Northern Arizona University.

I love meeting new sisters. I just get the feeling that some are too shy to come up and say anything. When I'm totally not like that, I see someone wearing the letters, I'm gonna stop ya.

This didnt happen to me but after I got initiated and we were having ritual review one of the seniors told us about how one day she was driving and she had an adpi bumper sticker on her car. Anyways, this one car kept pulling up in the lane next to her and kept waving her down. Finally our sister pulls into a rest stop and the lady pulls in next to her and tells her that she saw her bumper sticker and wanted to let her know that she was an adpi too.

Another sister in my chapter, in her letters, went to Disneyland with her boyfriend. After getting onto the log ride, she leaned back and told her boyfriend that the girl helping her onto the boat was an ADPi, too! He asked her how she knew, and she just shrugged. Little did he know, the girl had slipped her the handshake without saying a word while helping her onto the boat!

I have met several ADPi's at work. I place people on jobs through a staffing agency in Kansas City so I have the opportunity to interview a lot of people. It is always great to meet Sisters and talk about ADPi in the interview (it helps to get them over any nervousness). I also always try to schedule interviews with any ADPi's that apply. Actually, I usually try to schedule interviews with any Greek Organization member because of the experience and dedication I have found in most members of Greek Organizations :) Besides, I know ADPi always talked up networking and I am sure most of the other organizations did as well. I feel I should do my part!

vandy_violet 06-08-2003 10:20 PM

I met an ADPi at the register at American Eagle a few days ago. She was really nice-we both just happened to be wearing our lavaliers and she noticed first. She talked to me about going to convention and I mentioned a grade school friend in her chapter. One of the best things to come of it though, was my mom saying afterwards, "I knew this[joining ADPi] would be a great thing for you." She's always been supportive, but she wasn't in/didn't know anyone in a sorority before so she doesn't quite understand it all yet.

ASUADPi 07-02-2003 01:24 PM

Okay I just got back from vacay in CA so I actually have a few stories.
I should mention that a fellow sister, Amy, and I were the one's who went to CA to celebrate her birthday. So it was kind of ironic that two ADPi's go and somehow meet other ones. Anyways.

First we met a sister by the name of Carrie. I actually had met her online via the msn ADPi chat site. Carrie and I arranged for Amy and myself to meet her. She is an Alpha Chi (UCLA) alum. Such a sweetheart.

Next, while at Disneyland Amy and I were going on Star Tours via our fast pass and we were actually asking the worker where a particular restuarant was. I happened to be wearing my letters and the girl (worker) stated that she was also an ADPi. We didn't really get a chance to talk to her because we were going on our ride. So not quite sure what chapter she is a member of. We think possibly Zeta Alpha (Cal State Fullerton).

Finally, yesterday (Tuesday 6/30) while in line for the rapids ride at California Adventure there was a group of people behind us. Two frat guys from Delta Chi noticed that I was wearing an ADPi hat and asked if I was one (Duh), I answered that Amy and I were both ADPi's and then a girl from Delta Zeta asked the same question, again answered yes and she nudged a girl standing next to her, pointed to us and said 'their ADPi's". Turned out her friend is an ADPi at Cal State Fullerton. Her name is Lauren. Talk about a smalll world.

Lastly, although we didn't meet this woman a man was walking by me and I was wearing another ADPi hat I own, he noticed the hat, stopped and turned and stated "My wife is an ADPi" and then walked away. It was kind of weird yet cool in the same respect.

Anyways, there's my two cents.

Thank you for starting this thread. I am a fairly new member to ADPi & GC. It has made me so excited and proud to wear anything that says ADPi on it. (After school let out, I was slacking)

Violets to all of you,
Shannon

Okay so I was kind of bored and decided to start at the last page and move forward and I found this thread. LOL.

What's funny is that I have something to add. He he.

In October I was at a Math Cadre for work during our intersession. It was the last day and I was wearing my ADPi hat. I was talking to a man and he was mentioning a sorority function that he was helping with. Turns out it was for AKA. We then started talking "Greek Life". Well this girl, who I had seen but not really spoken too, Carrie, mentioned that she was Greek. Turns out she is an ADPi from Duke.

Then sometime early this year I was at a local chinese fast food place with a coworker. I was wearing my lanyard (spelling issues) with my class keys on it. Anyways, a women got up and walked over to me (I was refilling my drink) and mentioned that she is an ADPi from some school on the east coast. I actually asked her her chapter name and she couldn't remember (which I thought was pretty lame, how could you not remember your chapter).

And finally, my friend Amy got married on my birthday. At her wedding I met two more sisters. They were so nice and welcoming (I kind of wish they lived here in AZ and not in IA).

honeychile 04-16-2005 08:58 PM

Part of my job is interviewing new applicants (to be nurses aides or home health care companions). Most of these women are between 40 and 70, some older, some younger.

One woman a tad older came in, huge smile and wonderful personality. Under activities, she had, "volunteer at Ronald McDonald House". I said, "That's interesting - my sorority's national philanthropy is RMH." She smiled REALLY big and said, "Mine, too!" Yep, she is an ADPi, AND she's from my chapter!!

She's now at the point where she mostly drives people to appointments or such, but she called the other day to say that she moved to an assisted living place, where she could still have her car, etc. She's all excited, because she's dating "The Catch" of the home!

See, ADPis still have it, 50 years after being initiated!! :D

I'm SO excited to find this thread!!

A couple weeks ago, I met a sister in my office cafeteria! I was wearing a lanyard from Convention for that required employee ID display. The woman ahead of me in line asked if that said ADPi and I confirmed it. She told me she was one at Susquhana back in 'XY. I told her I was pres of the alumnae assn and she was excited to hear that there was one! She works for the company that owns our building, not for my company. It really made my day!

Then, the next week I was parallel parking and the car in front of me had ADPi window sticker! As I was rummaging for a piece of paper to leave a note, she & her mom walked up. I asked the girl if it was her car - as she's putting bags into the car - DUH! Anywho, we introduced each other, I plugged the alumnae assn and gave her my card.

Lesson learned: Display your ADPi PRIDE and say something when you see those letters!! :D

polarpi 04-17-2005 01:13 AM

I had totally forgotten about this thread :D

So this happened a few weeks ago (day before Palm Sunday, actually). I was wearing an ADPi "hoodie" sweatshirt to a Saturday morning choir/bells rehearsal at my church, and one of my fellow bell ringers noticed my letters and said that she *thought* that the local she was apart of in college became ADPi right after she graduated. I told her about the possibility of affiliating with ADPi now, and she said she didn't think she'd have the time to do so :( - but it was SO funny to talk about this and meet a "potential" sister from another chapter, if she had decided to affiliate when the local went national (if it was, indeed, ADPi).

scho5148 04-20-2005 08:53 PM

I was in the Denver Airport on Saturday and while sitting at the gate a woman came up and starting talking to me about my dog. (My yorkie was flying with me.) Later on she said she finally "realized" I had on an ADPi shirt. She said that she was an ADPi in California. I didn't get her name or chapter unfortunately. She was visiting her daughter in Denver and was then flying to Pittsburgh to see her father. We were on the same flight to Pittsburgh and were even seated in the same row, however I was at the window across the aisle from her.

That is the exact reason why I wear ADPi shirts whenever I can. You never know when you will run into a sister!

This one beats all...
I was in the hospital after having a baby girl and the lactation specialist was an ADPi. I call it topless recruiting!

Whoa! We have a winner!!

And welcome to GreekChat!! When you have a moment, will you read the Important posts at the top of the Forum, and tell us a little about yourself (and your legacy!)? Also, if you have an ebay screen name, we'll add it to our safe list.

I'm not sure what the "important posts at the top of the forum" are. ??

Where did you deliver? Congratulations on the birth of your daughter.
You weren't one of my patients were you? I'm another ADPi lactation specialist. :)

I was goofing off on the member search on PO and found out that a good friend of my mom's who has known me my whole life is an ADPi as well as my husband's' best friend's wife (follow that?). I can't wait until I see either of them for the next time!! :)

A couple stories:

At one of my best friend's weddings two months ago, we found out that the groom's step-mom is an ADPi, so we all took a pic with her and she joined us when we serenaded the couple at the reception!

Yesterday, my friend Kyle was on a flight from Austin to Las Vegas, and he ended up sitting next to two of my chapter sisters! I thought it was weird since we graduated a couple years ago, and that they just happened to be flying out of a city different from the one we all went to school in. Anyway, he was excited that he met some of my sisters!

suzannek 05-22-2005 01:00 PM

another random meeting

I was in the urgent care place for a cold this last Saturday. My doctor...an ADPi! :) Sadly, she recalled her collegiate experience as not the best, which has made her not want to join an Alumnae Association. Hopefully, we can change her mind!

ARADPi 06-06-2005 12:51 AM

When I flew home to California for Christmas I changed planes in LA. The woman who sat next to me in the timy plabe I took up the coast was actually an ADPi in my chapter (Delta Delta)! I looked her up when I got home and her composite still hangs in our house!

Also, This past year, I lived in the dorms and instead of living in the freshman wing of our dorm, may of us were overflowed onto other floors. I ended up living on the Air Force ROTC floor. One day I was wearing an ADPi T-shirt and I ran across the hall to recruit a guy to do heavy lifting. A woman stopped me because of my shirt. It turned out that she was an ADPi in my chapter in the late seventies! It turns out that her son was one of the ROTC guys living on my floor! She was so excited that her son was living with not only me, but two other ADPis as well!

On a similar note, my friend bought a mug with the ADPi letters and crest on one side and the name DEBBIE emblazoned on the other side for her mother (who is named Debbie). Her mother, it turns out was an AOPi and my friend, a non Greek, was confused. Her mother put the mug on a display shelf in their kitchen with a bunch of nick nacks. It always tickles me to look up and see the ADPi crest...

ADPiZXLes 06-16-2005 06:51 PM

Last year I went snow skiing with an ADPi (ZX) sister during Spring Break in New Mexico. It was warm outside, so I wore my waterproof ADPi pullover on the slopes. We skied into a ski lift line, and there was a girl to the left of us who saw us and said that she was an ADPi at another school in Texas and knew one of our ZX sisters! So we started talking about the sister we all knew, and then all of a sudden a woman who was further up in the line turned around and said that she was an ADPi, too!! At one random ski lift in New Mexico, there were four ADPi's in line together!

Also, one time last semester I went to a Starbucks to read for a philosophy class I was taking, and I happened to be wearing an ADPi sweatshirt. A woman walked up to me and put her hand on my knee and said that she just had to come over and say hi to me because she is an ADPi, too.

I wear letters as often as I can because I LOVE when that happens!

There's a gold Saturn that parks in the same deck as me for work......I see the car every day almost, but never run into the owner. (It's a sister from Vandy, I deduce from the Vanderbilt sticker above the ADPi sticker on the back windshield). One day, hopefully, we'll be able to meet.....

My ADPi roommate and I were walking around a community fair this weekend and we stopped in front of a jewelry stand to admire some bracelets. I noticed a set of sorority bracelets (beaded bracelets with sorority letters in blocks) and the one that was holding the "place of honor" was an ADPi bracelet. I motioned to my roommate.

"Hey roomie, look! It's an ADPi bracelet!"

We smiled, thinking about ADPi, and then almost had a heart attack because the woman running the booth squealed, "WHO's AN ADPI? I'M AN ADPI! DIAMONDS! You girls get 50% off anything you want! We all had to pay dues. 50% off!"

She was too cute! We didn't buy anything, but how fun!

*EtaNu*ADPi* 06-20-2005 11:17 PM

okay, this isn't entirely random, but still kinda weird! The girl who lives across the street from me is the same age as me. We went to different high schools and so we didn't hang out really. We both went to different colleges. One day I get a message from her saying how she couldn't believe that I was an ADPi, because she had joined ADPi at her school! Interesting how that worked out! :) And I am taking summer classes this summer at my local community college. I didn't think I'd know anyone, but I walked in on the first day and found out she was in one of my classes! That's about the only ADPi I've run into so far outside of my chapter and at DLC!

BBelleADPi 06-30-2005 10:49 AM

Last week, at my husband's office in the break room, I was talking to one of his employees about her mother's sorority, because I am getting recs for several of the girls around here. I knew this girl's mother had been in charge of Panhellenic teas here at one time, and needed to get some info from her. Anyway, one of the drug reps who had provided lunch that day, heard us talking about sororities, and heard my answer when the girl asked me what sorority I was in. The drug rep said, "I'm an ADPi!" So, obviously, we spent the rest of the lunch talking! She graduated from Georgia College and State University. I told her that my daughter and I had recently visited the school, and that I had met some of the girls from her chapter. It was neat to meet another ADPi, as it has been quite a while since that has happened to me.

FMUADPiEm 07-08-2005 02:33 PM

We were on our way to District and we all planned to wear our philanthropy jerseys that were red and the letters were in the McDonald M's. We had to use the bathroom on the way there, so on the exit there was only a McDonalds. We go in and wait in this long line. There was an old woman in line that noticed we were ADPi's and told us that she used to be one also. I just thought it was neat that we saw her at McDonalds on the way to district!

VAgirl18 08-16-2005 11:27 AM

I was working at the local country club this summer and on my next to last day one of the hostesses and I were chatting. Turns out she's an alumna from Zeta Sigma!

nauadpi 08-18-2005 09:56 PM

Ok, so today I was doing my orientation for my program for grad school... So through the day I ended up talking to the Programs Administrator for the program a bunch... She just this past May finished her grad school program, so she is fairly similar in age to me... So we just talk and joke a bunch... We started commenting we should hang out sometime and what not... So then we were commenting on something and it came up that I am in a sorority (talking about something from my undergraduate times)... And she goes hey so am I, which one are you are member of... I say Alpha Delta Pi, and her face kind of goes into shock... She is an adpi also... So that was really fun, and gave us more to chat about...

ASUADPi 08-18-2005 10:44 PM
