Would you travel to Canada?

Seeing that the World Health Organization put another travel adivisory on Toronto, would you still travel to Canada? No one knows for sure how many ways u can get it, is it worth the risk. Those of u that live in Canada, do you have any worries?

Too much socialism... Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

I'd still travel to Canada. I'd just stay away from Toronto.

canadajen 05-24-2003 03:16 AM

HMMM ...

I would!! I would!! ... oh wait ~I already live here (there) ;)

Seriously, with respect to the mad cow thing - it was ONE cow that was found to be a carrier (and that was LAST January according to the news). True me when I say that it is being taken extremely seriously ~ hundreds, if not thousands, of cattle from Alberta (province where that ONE cow was from), as well as BC & possibly other provinces, are being trucked as I type this to slaughterhouses so that they can be tested ... it is a HUGE deal here, and will definitely have negative consequences for our economy :(

That SARS thing ... yes, admittedly it was scary, but look at the facts, out of the 24 + people who succumbed to SARS, only one was younger that 60, and was otherwise fairly healthy. EVERYONE else had pre-existing medical problems and somewhat comprimised immune systems. Out of 30 million plus people, it is not that big of a deal ~ more media hype (& tripe) that anything else.

Just my thoughts after watching much media coverage from BOTH sides of the border ... remember, at least 75% of Canada's population lives within 150 miles of US border.

Sorry if I sound frustrated ... it's just sooo incredibly frustrating to be inundated with this stuff night & day ... it just never seems to end ... :(

YUP! DH is from Canada.
I go there at least once a week. I am less than a mile away from the Canadian border and 30 minutes from Vancouver, BC.

If I go to the end of my street, hop a fence, I am on Zero Ave in Canada.

Yes, I would go to Toronto. I love Toronto

CC1GC 05-24-2003 06:32 AM

I'd say the likeliehood of being struck within an terrorist act is more likely than getting either of the two aforementioned diseases. It's attitudes like this killing the hotel industry - and partly the reason why i'm getting 8 hours this week instead of my usual 40.

PM_Mama00 05-24-2003 10:02 AM

I go to Canada about once a week.

Lady Pi Phi 05-24-2003 10:22 AM

Oh yeah...and don't forget West Nile virus.

But seriously folks, CC1GC is right, you're more likely to drown in your own bathtub than get sick from coming to Canada.

valkyrie 05-24-2003 10:58 AM

I would probably avoid Toronto for now (although I LOVE it) but I'd go anywhere else in Canada. I'm a hypochondriac and always think I'm dying from something or other, so that's why I tend to be rather cautious. I actually went to a clinic last summer because I thought I had West Nile Virus, LOL -- it's common (relatively speaking of course) where I live and I got several mosquito bites, so of course, I must be dying.

Mad cow doesn't worry me at all because I don't eat meat or have any contact with cows.

midwesterngirl 05-24-2003 12:09 PM

Canada is far more than just Toronto.I haven't been in years but I would love to go back.

DZHBrown 05-24-2003 12:17 PM

I would love to go to Canada, but for the time being, I'd probably stay away from Toronto.

GeekyPenguin 05-24-2003 12:45 PM

I am actually thinking about studying abroad in Canada - I have always wanted to go somewhere else, but I'm kind of scared to go too far away, so I figured Canada would be a good compromise! :)

bcdphie 05-24-2003 01:55 PM

There is nothing to worry about coming to Canada - we had a SARS outbreak in Vancouver - nothing like TO - but it was still an bit off an outbreak, and I didn't give a damn. In fact I am seriously thinking about going to TO this summer because it's so dirt cheap right now. There is a reason Canada has one of the highest standards of living in the world and a little West Nile, SARS or Mad Cow Disease isn't going to change that.

It just sucks that this is happening right when we are on the verge of a massive economic boom - I didn't think I would see the day when the Bank of Canada had to step and lower inflation and interest rates because the loonie's growth was getting out of control.

Kevin 05-24-2003 02:19 PM

I wouldn't think twice about it. I think all this stuff has been blown WAY too far out of proportion.

My folks are vacationing at a lake in (I think) Ontario this summer.

LeslieAGD 05-24-2003 04:45 PM

I was interested in going to a Shakespeare conference in Stratford, but my parents flipped out and said it was a bad idea to go to Canada. Then it turns out they lowered the price for the conference, right after the travel ban. I'll wait to go next year.

DeltAlum 05-24-2003 08:51 PM

Mrs. DeltAlum is heading for Toronto in a couple of weeks. I have no concern and would go along if I could. The statistical chances of getting the desease are tiny.

Lady Pi Phi 05-24-2003 09:20 PM

There have been 24 deaths in Toronto due to SARS. I believe this was mentioned in an earlier post. More people die from the flu every year than will die from SARS. If SARS was really as bad an epidemic as people are making it out to be, trust me I would have gotten SARS myself. I ride the subway every day to and from work. That's some pretty close corners. I work in a building where an employees family member contracted SARS. My dad also worked in a building where more than 100 people were quarantined because of possible SARS connection. No one got it. These precautions are necessary if there is a suspected case of SARS, but it's no reason to live your life in fear and paranoia. I can guarantee that I am SARS free, and Toronto is just as safe as it always was. Yes, Toronto is not the only city in Canada. So if you're still afraid of Toronto, why not visit other beautiful places in Canada, because there are so many.

Peaches-n-Cream 05-24-2003 11:36 PM

I have no plans to go to Canada. I have never been there, but I would like to go there one day. :) My sister loved Montreal, Quebec and Niagra Falls.

The1calledTKE 05-24-2003 11:39 PM

I wouldn't go to Toronto, but any other place seems ok. If I got nervous there always is surgical mask.

Using that logic, I should never travel to New York City because you never know when someone might fly a couple of planes into a building. I shouldn't go to Atlanta because you never know when someone might bomb a park I might be in. I shouldn't go to Colorado because you never know when a couple of kids might decide to go on a shooting spree...

In other words, don't let things like this make you stop living your life. :)

Tom Earp 05-25-2003 02:06 PM

AAgammagirl 05-25-2003 03:12 PM

hey leslieAGD,
i'm from stratford, ontario, home of the stratford festival. it's completely safe here. no worries. it's a shame that SARS and Mad Cow are affecting people's decisions whether or not to visit canada.
the media always blows everything out of proportion, i also have been to t.o. since the SARS outbreak and didn't see anyone with a mask on. (and i was right downtown).
:D
hey tomearp, come visit me and RACooper. we both are greeks from u of t. in fact racooper's sister is one of MY sister's!!

I think that's a bit exagerated. There's a different between a contagious disease and acts of violence/terrorism.

Not when you gauge the reactions of some folks in this thread. No matter how many times people say that the chances of getting SARS are very slim, folks are acting like they're taking their own lives into their own hands just by travelling to Toronto. It just seems a bit silly to me. *shrug*

RACooper 05-25-2003 10:08 PM

I personally think that is blown way out of proportion.... come on close to 4 mil in the Toronto area and yet how many people have gotten it or died? More people are killed by bee stings each summer here in Toronto. In fact I love this hysteria.... super cheap specials for hotels, Jays tickets, meals.... there's no major crowds in Chinatown, so great foods always there and the staff is happy for your business :)

Personally I'm more worried about West Nile Virus

LeslieAGD 05-26-2003 06:02 PM

8 More SARS cases for Canada:
